hi all,
The new iPhone has real cool folders that show which apps are in that folder (max of 9). Does anyone know if that is possible on android? would be cool to be able to enable that...
Seriously? They're right there when you hold your finger on the screen. This article is six months old, but I think everything is still the same.
Jezzz guys. I realy love me nexus and android. The fact that I like a certain feature on a different platform shouldn't discredit me...... I just like the fact that on my home screen I am able to see what is in the different folders I have withou having to open the folder or use morw than one icon place.....
Please open your mind.
On topic, the link doens't help me as that just explains how to get a folder and fill it. That part I understand. Now how to have it filled with smaller icons that show what is in that folder?

For modifying the "regular" folders to do that, you need the code in the system framework.
There might be such option made in programs like Folder Organizer (which aren't "real" folders), but I'm not aware of any.

Yes, but the iPhone 4 OS folder you touch it, and it slides down and you can see the apps on the main screeen without having to go back/forth. I think that is what he is really looking for and is a useful feature.
If you look through the market you'll find some "widgets" that basically scale down the icons and allow you to put four shortcuts in the place of one regular sized shortcut.
I don't recall the name of it at the moment.
I guess some people can't read nor can they name their folders.
They have to look at pretty little colorful pictures to show them what's in the folder. I gotta admit though, the iPhone folders are VERY cool.

apps organizer is fantastic.
make a 'group', drop it to your screen 1 2 or 3, make another group, do the same, then use them like 'intarweb' and 'communicate', or 'games' and it really makes selecting frequented applications a breeze.
i have 'phone' grouped with: gvoice, phone, sms
interweb: browser, gmail, email (3 accounts), facebook etc
money: craigslist, bank checks, check scanner, paypal, ebay, etc
it really makes the phone a breeze to use, even with tons of applications installed.
Lol it's funny how many people here hate the iPhone. Anyway, check out RomoApps "App Bar Widgets" at romoapps.com
Now that is what i was looking for! very slick and very good. Glad someone is willing to look beyond the flamewars!
Downloaded it and it is definitely a keeper! Thanks!

just found the solution, and apparently it was on my nexus the whole time. Add a new folder in folder organiser, and change the icon to: show items in icon.
voila, Iphone like folders. only thing missing is drag and drop into the folders, but personally think the way you have an overview in folder organiser is way better anyway. central place to manage the labels, and exportable to the sd card, so a perfect way to back up the settings, and labels!

This included in android? Where are you finding the option to change the icon to "show items in icon"? Or is this a third party app?
Unnecessary / hateful posts removed.
There's no need for this here. We're all intelligent people who have the right to prefer certain aspects of other operating systems, even though we may not all agree on the same things.

Open Folder Organizer, select "labels", hit the arrow on the right of the icon you want to change, hit "icon", select option "show items in icon".
When you press the stylus button and double-tap the screen, s memo lite pops up and you can record a note. Does anyone know where the note is stored once saved? It never appears in my gallery, and I cannot find any of them!
/sdcard/Application/SMemo/switcher
Thanks for that!
They are in PNG format, and so do not show up in the Gallery. I can't see any way to open them form anywhere but a file manager, either. Seems like a but of a stuff up generally.
I'll put it under Sugarsync control so I don't lose them, but it would be nice to have proper access.

Gallery handles PNGs fine. What's stopping them from showing by default is an empty marker file called /mnt/sdcard/Application/SMemo/switcher/.nomedia - delete that and they'll show up.

cheers the best tip i've had in ages if not ever.
I did look for that, but on reading your post I looked harder and realised I had not displayed hidden files.
Thanks!
Now working as desired? I still think it's a stuff-up as they should want these accessible in some way after saving.
Evening all..
So I've had a quick look through the forums, and not really seeing much about this...
I'm finding that the stock album/gallery app, although brilliant, is really annoying me! When you load the app, it shows the "Pictures" tab.. which appears to be ALL images it finds on the device (regardless of '.nomedia' files exising) The thing I'm finding the most annoying about this, is if I send someone a photo on whatsapp, or they send me one, it shows in this pictures tab. So If I take a picture, then send it to someone, it shows up as a duplicate image. A bit frustrating because I like the app!
Has anyone found a way of making it respect .nomedia files? Coming from CM10.1 on my old phone, so used to seeing it all in different folders.. can't remember if they were hidden before or not..
Thanks!

Yeah, I was thinking about where I would store white/blacklists for media if I would be ignoring the tools that have been given to me by Android OS (given the fact that they are ignoring the .nomedia files). As my phone is not rooted I am not able to explore the sqlite databases, but maybe someone with a rooted phone could have a look? It's a long shot, but it's worth trying . I'll be rooting my phone as soon as it's possible without unlocking the BL (and I know I might be waiting for a loooooong while, but it happened with the Motorola RAZR, so I figured as this device is officially unlockable developers might be able to find an exploit sooner?).

First thing I tried, thought maybe I was making the .nomedia file incorrectly. No dice i'm afraid!
.nomedia should work, but it might take a while before the media library does a full rescan. Reboot the phone, connect it to PC and move a file to it, ... Those things could trigger it.

the same thing is annoying me!! i came from s3 and i was using a custom rom with i don't know which album type... i've been looking all over the place for a solution or a way of porting the album from another rom or the phone!! is there any?
I also like the Album application and wish it gets "fixed"
Sony disregarding the ".nomedia" files is weird, since its android's standard way of dealing with media, although the ".nomedia" files are a really bad solution in itself since they provide no configuration options: Either you have media scanned or not (I hate having album covers appearing mixed up with my photos in the gallery, but cannot add a ".nomedia" file since that would make the system not find my music). Adding files with a specific key name in a folder manually is not a user friendly way of managing what folders to scan.
I always wondered why Android does not provide a system level interface to define what media to scan and where.
PS: The N900 provided a file where the scan paths and supported file types could be configured. I feel like android gave a step back in this regard comparing to maemo/meego.

If you have a folder with pics which you don't wanna see in album app:
create a text file on PC with name .nomedia without content (nothing before the point!). Then move the text file in to this folder.
Hmm or is this only for songs??!^^ you have to try
You can also use apps to hide pics or videos like keepsafe or something.

Aha, ok.
And then you have to delete .nomedia and take it again in? Or doesn't will hide again?
And when you restart?
We have to clear cache of album and media storage everytime to hide images in album app
Ok.. Thx for trying. Then the only thing which we can use is an app..

This super annoys me to. In fact a couple of things annoy me with the app.
Here is my wish list for the Sony Album app.
1. That upon opening, it should start with the "My Albums" tab
2. That there be an option to sort photos other than date.
3. That when I want to select a wallpaper form my album app right from the home screen, I am not bombarded with the whole long list of 5000 photos. It should present me with folders to choose from.
4. If it wants to stick to displaying the "Pictures" tab as default upon opening, it should at least start with displaying only the camera album. Then a small shortcuts to enter all folders at once.
5. If it wants to stick to sorting only by date, it should at least follow the exif data of pictures. Sometimes after flashing a new ROM, I find my taken pictures in wrong orders. Most recent at the bottom and old ones at the top.

Hi, I've been having problems with Samsung Notes sharing, I was wondering if anyone knew where the actual notes are located so that when I can't share one to my compuer (which I never can) I can at least grab a copy from there. I tried looking but I couldn't find anything
Did you know that you can hold the s-pen button, double tap on the screen(unlocked), and it will open a new blank note? I have disabled the auto open air menu because of that, its so handy
To answer your question.. no clue.

The only thing you can do is share notes in PDF format to, say, your Dropbox account and view them from there. The notes directory cannot be accessed without root, and even then I'm not sure there is any PC app that can read the format.
I know it's not ideal, but you do a screen capture and then transfer the picture/screen capture

The problem happens exactly when I press on PDF, even sharking the Image would be fine for me but I can do neither. If I try to share the pdf it gets stuck in an infinite loading screen. Same with image. If I try text only then nothing happens. Only thing I can do is sdoc which well isn't really very useful and I've noticed that if I try to open some of them I get a "corrupted" message
Hi All! Does anyone know where on the storage that the new pixel recorder app saves it's files?
They appear to be .m4a if you try save to Google Drive or share the file. I'm looking to find the actual directory as I've got audio recordings that I'd like to put in the same folder to see if it will transcribe it.
My other option is to play the files back on another device beside it and let it transcribe it but some of the files are 2hrs+ and I'd rather not have to do it that way

Did you find any help ?
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.recorder/files/recordings

that is the first place I looked and don't see any directories of that name. I also did a system-wide search of any directory (user, not root) w "recorder" in the name with no hits.
Admittedly I am on a Pixel 3a (notice this is a 4XL thread & @Atomregen has a 3XL)
Other suggestions?

On my Pixel 3 XL it can be found in the same place. But you can also save the file via the 3 dot menu in Google Drive or send it as an email.
Edit: in my last post, I hadn't changed the signature of XDA labs.

my understanding after reading other posts on the net, this data directory you refer to is in the data directory of the app itself which cannot be seen by unrooted phones.
The location on a pixel 4a is:
If I click the three dots in the upper right hand corner I can share the recording to file manager and then I can select a different folder on the pixel and paste a copy of it.
