Anyone use iDrive instead of DropBox? - Off-topic

Hi,
I see that DropBox is used often to distribute ROMs here, but I wonder if iDrive may be a better alternative (or an add-on)? DropBox caps at 16GB, but iDrive gives you up to 50GB of free cloud space.
On a side note, if you use Torrent, you can turn iDrive into a seedbox too. Here's how:
[Basic Idea] Upload a file you want to seed to iDrive, then use that file's URL as the webseed for a new torrent.
[Steps]
1. Sign up for a free account on iDrive. (Comes with 5GB)
2. Get 10GB more space instantly by allowing iDrive to send referrals to everyone in your email contact list (if you don't want to spam your friends, just use a spare email account with at least 5 contacts that you don't care about). Now you have 15GB! You can get up to 50GB through referrals.
3. Create a folder (I named it "Public"). Check the checkbox next to the folder and click on "Share" on top. This will take you to a page where you can configure some settings. DO NOT SET PASSWORD, or this will not work. Set the number of days to share to 30 (max). Set the number of downloads to 30 (max). Leave the rest untouched.
4. Upload a file you want to seed to that folder you just created.
5. Once the upload finishes, you can see a link icon (looks like a chain?) left side of the "file size." Click on it, and it'll give you the file's share URL (this will be our webseed URL).
6.Open up uTorrent and create a new torrent. Select your file. Add any public tracker (For instance: http://tracker.openbittorrent.com/announce). Paste the webseed URL from step 5 into the Web Seed box. Do not check Private torrent. Click Create and save as... and wait as uTorrent makes your .torrent file.
7.Done! Just post your .torrent file to start seeding. iDrive will seed your file for you. Use the bandwidth throttle feature (I'm still experimenting with this) as you see fit.
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
GT

Uploads And Downloads

Hi Everyone!
I believe that no one should wait for downloads which are legal and waste 30 - 90 seconds of their time just waiting for a JavaScript to finish off. I think we need to share ways to bypass all this stuff.
Please post any of the following if you have them and wish to submit:
1. Rapidshare Hacks
2. Megaupload Hacks
3. Rapidshare Accounts You Have Bought
4. Megaupload Accounts You Have Bought
5. Any Other Upload Site Stuff
6. Access to your OWN FTP Site
@Mod: I have no intention of violating the rules

Gotcha. http://aximilation.com/hosting/ - I'll register a domain name and prettify it up if I get enough use/interest. I plan to add a user account section at some point as well.

Any domain bought??
Not at the moment, if you notice my signature, I took down the hosting a bit ago, it turns out the script I was using had a security hole in it and someone used it to hack my site, nice huh? I haven't had time to put anything new up.
Buuut....from what I was seeing, it didn't look like anyone was using it anyways, there was an issue with larger files that my web host didn't like. :-/
If there's enough interest I'll look into putting something up again, I just don't have it on my top priority list at the moment, if you or anyone wants a file hosted, I can still give ftp access, or upload it for you, no problem. Drop me a line: hostingat aximilation dotcom

Android friendly online file storage?

Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone knows of file storage sites that have mobile friendly pages. Something like DropBox would be ideal.
Today I am on a library computer and have a folder of word files I really want to read on my Magic on the train on my way home but can't use USB to mount my SD. I tried zipping and emailing it to myself but gmail didn't let me download the zip file. I had a preview option but that just tried and failed to open it in Astro. I love Zoho writer's mobile version for viewing files but that doesn't let me batch import. Most free backup services have hugely bloated web clients and wouldn't play nicely with a mobile browser.
Anyone heard of such services/apps?
Setup an FTP server at home and use AndFTP on your phone to connect to it. It's probably the easiest and then you also have full control over your own files. FileZilla server is free and fairly easy to setup.

For that you'd have to let your PC run when you're away... pretty useless.
You turn your computer off when you're away? :O
Pretty useless reply if I may say so.
@rahux: Did you try uploading files without zipping them? It may be a hassle if there are many files... Maybe you could just rename the zip file to .txt or something like that and you may be able to download it.

If it is just word files you want to view. Upload the files to google docs. Then get 'gdocs' from the market and away you go.

Free & Add Free FileHoster

When i want to try an App or Rom, and download it, i hate some FileHostSites.
As i'm a webdesigner and got my own server i made my own filehost website.
I only want to host files from/for XDA-Developers.com.
So if u want to use it as developer, use the same username as on this website, all other usernames will be deleted.
I also made the upload limit 253,5 MB as most roms don't exceed this.
It allows: CAB, ZIP, TAR, 7ZIP & RAR files.
The website is new and in beta, feel free to use it and give me some comments on it when there's a bug.
http://www.bazurk.net
Only uploaders need an account, downloaders are free to follow download links like this: http://bazurk.net/?d=16F791EA1
This seems like a great idea More so because I am at a school where most of the popular file hosting sites are blocked, which is a total pain in the ass when I want to get a ROM.
Does the site support multi-connection downloads and pausing/resuming? (DownTheMall or similar) Because that is my main beef with file hosting sites, my school's network is complete **** and if you try to download something usually it will download a meg or 2 and then slow down and eventually completely stop, at which point I have to pause and resume to keep it going.

Which online storage should I use for my ROM?

What online storage site is the best to put new ROM's on??
- waiting before downloading?
- pop-up's?
- a lot of spam on the page?
- slow downloadconnection?
- max. number of downloads at a time?
- max. data transfer a day?
That are some negative features of online storage site's, I'm searching for a solution without all of that!
I would go for either mega-upload, or 4-shared(has online archive system, with folders and stuff).
I would host it on the xda ftp server. or find someone with server that wants to host it. i maybe could host your rom if you would like. pm me for more info.
You cant host ROMs on XDA's ftp server. They don't want legal trouble.

i guess i have not been keeping up with the news. didnt they used to host roms there?
yeah so much time they hosted everyhting in there.. it was really cool... but its over jiji
Thanks for the reactions!
There is indeed the issue of legal troubles
Let's say it's not an option to store ROMs at a private server, or the XDA FTP.
So it has to be external storage, for free ofcourse
An ROM takes about 200/300 MB, let's say you have a few versions (e.g. Manila) and you will keep the last 2 editions you maked before your new ROM..
So 2GB storage is necesary? or not?
User interface from a online storage site is also important! Creating folders is a must!
Someone guggestions?
Use 4shared then. Its perfect for what you want. Go and check it out.

looks nice, but when you download a file you get a wait a minute page whit lots of spam!
wetransfer,com has a great downloadpage!
It also must look decent!
wetransfer deletes files after 2 weeks, so its no option.
I think I have the right solution!
I'm testing now, and let it try by a chef!

Making a shortcut to a web page.

I use for very long time SPB Shell and I am very happy with it, but what I was missing it was a direct link to a web site. For long time I used links on first page of Opera but they are only 9 and I need it more. Sow I start digging for a solution.
I find this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=490447 on my favorite site (xda-developers.com) but it doesn't say nothing about web links. So I just try a solution by myself and I find it. Please remember maybe somebody else find this solution to, but personally, I didn`t find noting about this subject in my searches.
How you to:
1. You create a new .lnk file or you just duplicate one already existent (you can do this in other programs to but i will explain only for resco)
2. Rename .lnk file with any name you desire.
3. At properties on second tab named "Shortcut" on "Target" field write "http://www.website.com" were www.website.com is you desired website. Please do not forget to write the "http://" part because without the link is not working.
4. Deselect if is need it "Hidden" option on "General" tab other ways backup program will ignore the link and you may lost it on next restore.
4. Whit a specialized program change icon of link with a icon of your choice. I created a icon (png file) with a snap shot for every page I use.
5. Enjoy.
Here is my page in SPB Shell dedicated to Web (for icon used here please visit my blog www.everydaymobiles.blogspot.com)
