N7 vs Ipad 3 - which to get ?! - Nexus 7 General

Hey XDA community, I've been coming and going alot lately but I got tons of headaches off this so i thought let's see what you guys think,
I was offered a free ipad 3 from my brother, against getting a N7 from my out pocket, I has an ipod 4g and HTC explorer, so am not a fan or a
hater for any of those platforms actually I love them both equally plus, they are almost identical when it comes to apps availabilty, I know the ipad
might have a slight edge in frames in that area, now onto the most important part, I'll use it mainly for ebooks reading as am studying Comp.
Science and am a gamer web browsing .. ofc ! ( again no hate for the 7-in screen ) and please don't point to the "issues massacre" that's going on
about the N7 althought RMA is not an option for me if anything wrong goes on ...
long post, sry

What's with the crazy font and centering? Makes your post difficult to read.

Get the nexus 7. Compared to the iPad, n7 is just more convenient to hold and type in terms of weight and size and more portable. The size is good enough for reading also at least for me.

Can you get both?
If in your position I would probably try and decide which size device would suit me better.... The bigger iPad is less portable and harder to use as a regular e-reader, but might be better for browsing and textbooks with diagrams and pictures.. The Nexus is more portable and a great all rounder (I am doing an IT degree and have no problems reading my textbooks.
I personally detest Apple's business practices and would never buy one of their devices, but their products are solid and you probably can't go wrong either way.

lol thought about it but I thought of an X360 right away :silly:
you've got a good point, reading text about source code might get ugly on the N7 while going back and forth ...
about the "solid" thing, I've done a jailbreak on one of these babies, and the thing got re-springing every once and a while, while the N7 actually begs you to customize it lol
I've got a tickle though .. are you experiencing any lifting or anything ? since u've got an N7

I agree as far as the size goes. I have both sizes, and I'm loving the 7" form factor. So much easier to handle when lounging around, and still big enough for my uses.

That's not a biased response at all.
@OP- I own both, and both are great devices in their own regard. The screen on the iPad is unparalleled, it has a ton of awesome games, and a bunch of great productivity apps. The Nexus 7 has the customizability, and a great form factor, plus all of Google's great cloud services. I take my N7 with me, and use the iPad at home. I think the 7" is a much better size for portability, and it's the perfect size for gaming, but unfortunately the iPad just trumps Android with the shear number of high quality games available. The N7 is also a better size for reading too. If it comes down to getting an iPad 3 for free or actually buying the N7, then I would take the iPad no question. If you were going to have to spring for either, then it would be a toss up and I would lean towards the N7. If I was in your shoes though, I would take the free iPad and buy an N7

Screw it.. am getting this freebie, then I'll re-think about this whole thing WHY THE HELL SHOULD I SAY NO TO A FREE IPAD !!
Thanks all for you're hot replies

Take the free ipad, sell it, buy a brand new nexus7, and use the remaining on accessories, apps, and a nice dinner.

If you need GPS then the iPad3 is useless if it's the WIFI only version since it doesn't have GPS. Take the free iPad3, sell it and buy two Nexus 7's.

I know for me personally, the ipad is too big. I like the 7 inch form factor, and the nexus 7 is designed to for portability and convenience. Just depends what your looking for I suppose. Honestly I'm not sure why anyone needs a bigger tablet but that's just me.

Ironically I sold my iPad 3 earlier today.
Initially I bought the Nexus 7 in addition to the iPad but since owning it I just haven't put it down. Yes the iPad has more polished apps but the sheer power, flexibility and portability of the N7 can't be beaten. I found I simply couldn't justify keeping the iPad!

Are you still happy with your Nexus 7?

Hi everybody!
I'm about to get a tablet. Not sure yet which one, but the Nexus 7 is definitely one of my targets.
So I was wondering, if you, Nexus 7 owners, are still happy and would still recommend it.
If not, let me know why and what you'd recommend instead.
Looking forward to your answers.
Kind regards and greetings from Germany.
Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.
Love it. It's a fantastic device and the form factor rocks as far as i'm concerned.
still like it? its been less than a month lol
ive had 2 defective ones and a 3rd is being sent to me, and i still like it.
Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

Soooo who gonna sell their Nexus 7 for a Ipad Mini?
Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.
I personally won't be selling mine as im not a fan of Apple never have been, but i reckon some on here will even if they don't admit to it right now.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

Uses of a tablet?

Well I was planning to buy my first tablet with the spare 500$ laying around. While doing some research, I thought " What will I do with a tablet?" . Here are some answers that I got
Play games
Watch Vidoes anywhere
Have Android on a big screen
????
Profit?
None of these answers where convincing and so I wanted to ask the community over here as many of you would have tablets.
Thanks

Tablets are first and foremost media consumption devices. They are terrible for productivity unless you get something of the transformer line and cannot play many high end games. Internet browsing, light games, and movies/videos are what tablets do best. They are the portability step in between ultrabooks and smartphones.

Is the Nexus 7 screen big enough? I think the iPad's 9.6 inch is too big, and I haven't played with Nexus 7 till now. Does anyone know a shop where I can play with it? I tried Staples, Fry's and Best Buy and none of them have it on display.
So everyone just bought a tablet to do the same stuff their phones do?
So all in all, tablets are just giant cellphones with no 3g/4g(mostly)

Bigger screen. The difference between a 4 inch screen and a 7 inch screen is huge.

Almost took the plunge tonight...

Was in my cart from play store. Complete impulse buy. I don't need it. I don't even know what I would use it for. I just rooted my touchpad, which will keep me happy for a few days. Have a galaxy s3, which I love. Does everything I need. I was wavering tonight between this, the g-note, and the Asus transformer i700. The last two get such mixed reviews...so I'm really leaning towards this. I think the smaller screen and cheaper price tag make it a much better choice. I just want a new toy. I'm hoping I can see one in person tomorrow.

If you don't have a family member who can take your old tablets off your hands, I'd recommend selling them or trading them in and get the Nexus 7. Assuming you get a flawless unit, you'll love the little guy.
I barely use my macbook pro anymore...even though I love it. I find the gs3 really satisfies everything I need. The bigger pads are just too big to be comfortable. If I were to get a bigger one it would probably be the iPad3, seems like the best overall package. Just hate that I can't customize it as much. I think the 7 will really be the perfect fit for me. Just hope that I get more use out of it than my HP.

WOW slim do not be such a dizzy..
As far as this Device I love the size . It seems to be the size vs the other bigger tablets . A phone or galaxy note is to small for a tablet. but to big for a phone.. I am the owner of a ACER A500 AND Love the Device. My spouse uses it on the couch now since i have my Nexus with me all the time. She is becoming and Android APP.CHIC.. I love that i can fit this in my smaller purse or a bigger clutch type bag and pack it anywhere and still look Good ..Not like im packing a Diaper bag to hold my tablet in...
I say its a personal thing rather this fits your needs or not.. If you have a bigger device you could very well think this is too small..
Look at the specs and what you want it for and make a Educated decision do NOT base buying anything on some one else saying they have and Love it.. GET WANTS Practical for you as long as there is NO APPLE ON IT.. APPLES ARE FOR WORMS ...

I own both an iPad 3 and a Nexus 7
I tend to find the Nexus is better for organisation, also for reading news. However the iPad is better for "Creating" content, or for doing actual work. Purely because it has more apps (and very good ones too)
Hopefully Android catches up and offers high quality content creation apps soon
I would recommend a Nexus tho

Is this overkill?

So I own an iPhone and an iPad and I just bought a Nexus 7 today. I'm wondering if anyone thinks this os overkill? I heard a lot of good things about the nexus and I feel like a 7 inch tablet would be easier to use and more portable, plus its a great price. I didn't get it planning on getting rid of my ipad. So is having 2 tablets overkill or are there other people out there that have 2?

I use my Nexus 7 as a interim replacement of sorts for my Nexus S. Nexus S is a great phone, Google has supported it well and have got my moneys worth out of it.. The problem is.. It's old and just slow.. Its been regulated to being used as just a phone. So the Nexus 7 fills in the roles that have just become unbearable to do via the phone. ie: Maps, Navigation, Music, Email writing etc etc.. It's the perfect high end day planner to grab and go with.
My Nexus 10 fits in everywhere else.. It's usually sitting with me at the PC.. When I'm doing something fullscreen like gaming, or doing an install etc I continue doing my reading, watching a movie, internet etc on the Nexus 10. Since my 40 inch LED for my PC also is used by my Wii-U my Nexus 10 is used in the same light. I can game etc on my Wii-U and keep the N10 around to keep dibs on my internet world. It's also excellent to read with in bed as the large screen and high resolution makes reading at night very easy on the eyes. My Nexus 10 is also my gaming device. There isn't a single game (except solitare) on my Nexus 7.. My Nexus 10 is packed with them.. I never have to worry about bad performance and even simple games like Angry Birds etc look phenomenal.
The difference between us being my iPhone works great so I can use it for things I could use the Nexus for. Lol it's funny that I bought it without a specific use in mind. I guess ill figure it out or return/sell it.

Personally I think it would be a bit much, but it's just down to personal preference. I have a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. Thanks to the Nexus 7, I don't have anything at all really on my Gnex. Just music and a few daily apps. The Nexus 7 takes care of everything else, and it's also what I tinker around with for ROM's and Kernels.
So personally I would have no use for a Nexus 10, but that's just me. It would be fun to play around with for a few weeks, but I doubt I'd use it much after that. And due to it's size it would be home mostly - the N7 fits in my coat pocket which I really like about it.
I have the Nexus 4 and the 7. Plenty for me, I have considered buying a chinease iPhone clone (just to trick friends into thinking I got an iPhone) but there like 200$

Honestly I hate the size and weight of the regular iPad. If I had to get rid of any it would be the iPad 1 and 3. The 7 inch size is way more portable

You know, there's something still to be said of owning a device just for the sake of owning it.
Nothing wrong with keeping it around as a "toy" if you fail to find a particular use for it. That's assuming, of course, money isn't an issue. Far too many of us don't have that luxury these days...
yeah i think that's kinda why i wanted it. a toy to play with. i love gadgets. i love playing around with roms and such on android devices. i have to decide whether it was smart to spend the money or not though lol.

The 7 is a great developer device... If you like fooling around with things and customizing them until your heart is content, then you will love the nexus 7. I personally find no need for a tablet as big as the nexus 10 / Ipad, my laptop is faster than hell with 8 gigs of ram and a solid state drive so if i need something more than my 7 I use that. After buying the 7 I don't think I will buy any android device that doesn't say nexus on it though, it makes my galaxy s3 look outdated.
LOL, I have an iPad 3, Nexus 7, Galaxy S3, Touchpad, LG Revolution and a Droid X.
That is probably overkill, but whatever's clever!

Do you actually use all of those? Do you have specific uses for them? I dunno I'm thinking I should return it because I could use the money for something I actually need.

Lol, I really just use my Nexus 7, S3 and iPad. The other ones from time to time. If you don't have a need for it, and could use the money elsewhere, I say return it.
All of these things really are toys/wants, not really necessities.
True. The fact that I feel super guilty about buying it means I probably should return it.

What do you use your nexus for vs your iPad?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Honestly? I really use both devices for the same thing. Some games, web browsing, email, Facebook, twitter, Flipboard, Google+, etc, etc. I really have found myself using the Nexus a lot more because of the form factor. It is so tiny and easy to carry around, and is very powerful.
So really you could get rid of the iPad and be fine

Did I make a good decision getting the N7?

I recently purchased an N7 but at the MWC I saw ASUS announce the Fonepad.
I would love if I could use my N7 as my every day phone.
The snag is I'm in Canada so it might be hard to obtain one, and I'm not sure how the atom benchmarks against the processor in the current N7.
I've also been considering returning it because I've heard a new version of the n7 is coming out with 1080p and 2GB of ram.
If you always think about what products that will be released in the future, you'll never buy and enjoy anything. The N7 is great. You bought it, now enjoy it.
Well, obviously newer tabs....except cheapo ones, are gonna be better.
If you wanna spend 300....you made a great decision. If you can spend much more, then no you didn't.
I think this is obvious, and why no one is replying.

I bought the N7 last week and ended up returning it. I'm trying to transition from an iPad to an Android tablet and found the screen quality on the N7 to be lacking. It's an excellent low-end tablet, but the screen quality is nowhere near the iPad.
Right now I'm going to either
a) Get a Nexus 10, OR
b) Wait until Mid-May to see how the refreshed Nexus 7 will turn out.
I love the size of the N7, and I already have a tablet for the moment, so I'm thinking I may choose option b. I also fear that if I end up purchasing a N10, it'll have some amazing hardware refresh in the next 4-5 months and I'll end up getting ticked off.
Since I already have a tablet of some sort, it's easier for me to wait a bit. If someone needs a tablet NOW, I'd suggest the N10 to them.

Low end? Its specs still stand up or beat most newer 7" tablets.
For 7"....not much that's better...the low price is a bonus.
If you're gonna talk 10"....its apples and oranges. They can pack more tech into their bigger size...obviously. Also...some people don't consider 10" cause its too big.
If someone is afraid that something better will come out....that WILL always happen. So better not buy anything....or maybe just rent...so you can upgrade at will!

Probably a poor choice of phrasing on my part (I'm battling a head cold and can't think straight).
The internals are excellent, but the screen isn't great. The screen is on-par or better-than tablets in that size range, but it's not as good as a larger sized tablet. Since the size isn't a major issue with me, I have the luxury of being able to compare the larger screens to the smaller ones. I don't expect them to cram the resolution of an N10 into an N7 though.
My particular N7 also had very washed-out colors and very bad backlight bleeding at two corners. Hopefully any refresh that is done will fix quality issues like this.
I think the screen is fantastic - no issues here.
I love my N7

You could always use Google Voice and GrooveIP together. I use mine as a house phone with that combination while I'm at home. A Google Voice account is free and GrooveIP Lite is free on the play store. There is also a paid version but the free Lite version has everything you need. Use the Google Voice app for texting. All free on a Wi-Fi connection.

The N7 forum is probably the last place you'd ask if you made a good decision. I'd venture a guess that most people would confirm that you made a wonderful decision in purchasing one, regardless of what for.
@op,
A bit of good old fashioned research would have answered all questions you have asked here. .
You have bought a quad core, tegra 3 running device which is still quite powerful. It will do whatever you ask it too generally, and it will do it well. I bought mine for £169.99 if i remember correctly, for the 32gig version. If you take all this into account, then go ahead and use it, you`ll find yourself amazed at how good it is, versus value for money, there is nothing better.

Sales figures also confirm why it is such a good device...if your expecting snapdragon 4/ 2 gig ram type hardware then obviously stay of the crack. Respectively, nobody can deny that it is fantastic value for money.

I can't decide on the Nexus 7 or the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Tomorrow I will test drive both.

You made a good decision with the information that was available at the time. Don't beat yourself up about it.
I like the direction things are going and I think we will see more 7" tabs with small bezels and voice integration. People get pi$$ed at teh idea of using it as a phone, but like I keep saying you don't have to use it as a phone, its just nice to have additional options.

I find the Nexus 7 to be a blast. It's so much fun getting to experiment with other developer's ROMs on the latest form of Android. Of course there are always updates to be released, nothing's perfect. The Nexus 7 is definitely a good choice considering what other Android tablets are floating around in the market.
Nexus 7 vs Samsung
try to check this.
try to contact any webpage from Nexus 7 and the competitor, and you will see the difference.
Nexus 7 always.
This was the test that I did.

I don't see why people would be angry about using a 7" tablet as a phone. We already have a 6"1 phone out now. Heck, we'll see 7“ phones pretty soon.

What I'm worried about is that there will be a refresh with 2gb of ram and a better screen.
Then you've answered thread already! Just wait. Or you will be disappointed ....right?
And a 7 inch phone? LOL. No thanks! I have an s2, and since I got my tab ....I kinda wish I had a smaller phone.
