rom suggest cognition w camera - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Cognition 5 rom seems like the best but there are people with camera and other issues,
I just rooted and unlocked my captivate, here are specifics as is: firmware 2.1-update1 baseband I897UCJH7 kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2 build GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6 build ECLAIR.UCJH7
I don't want to sacrifice functionality for a phone that looks good or is too modern for the captivate to handle, I want a rom where I will have no issues whatsoever with things like mms, camera, ics, wifi / 3g sip w & w/o bluetooth (w sipdroid), tethering, installing to sd, that has a promise of performing well for a good while and ideally for the rest of the life of the phone without having to possibly upgrade ever again.
I didn't find a barebones rom for this as the vibrant does, so what other roms you think will be most performant and stable?

Try the latest official release, Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 first. To get Root on the KK4 use this... [Utility]KK4 Easy Root. And then if u want to venture out to Dev Roms from there use TRusselo's Guide.

thanks for the advise. btw why should I go with or without bootloaders on that firmware as I don't know what the difference would be.

U have to have the gb bootloaders in order to run any gb rom. Eclair/ Froyo bootloaders are different from Gingerbread Bootloaders.

[Q] Don't wanna brick my phone.......Please, advise...

I have done reading a lot of post recently.
I brick'ed my cappy once, I reflash the stock kernel, and it came back alive.
After that, I managed flashing my I897 into Foyo 2.2 and with Cog 2.4.1 Rom.
So far so good.
I am still very afraid of brick my cappy again.
So, I decided post question here, just to clear my mind.
If I wanna flash it into an I9000 Rom from Cog 2.4.1 Rom
What are the right steps ??
My current system config is listed here
Firmware 2.2
Baseband Version - I897 UCJJ4
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9
Build Number - Cognition. v2.4.1
The best thing you can do is decide which i9000 Rom you want to flash to and read the OP of that thread for exactly how to flash. It is gonna require both odin and clockwork though. Which Rom are you wanting to go to?

From your opinion, which I9000 Rom is most popular ?? (This might be the best one i think)
Is it ganna be better than Cog's I897 rom ??
Really I prefer to stick with cognition but there is no denying that setirons kernel is the best one going right now but it doesn't play well with cognition. If I was going to go i9000 I would use mikeymikes conversion of docs Rom...it looks really nice and everyone in that thread loves it.

Questions about Bootloaders, Kernels and Modems

I am new to Galaxy S but have had experience with roms, kernels and radios from a G1.
I started with Samsung 2.2 firmware and rooted it using Cyanogenmod wiki page and flashed the latest MIUI. I know kernels change speed and include Voodoo colours and sound for Galaxy S. I also now radios can change signal and gps accuracy.
1)Are modems the same as radios and if so where do I find a list of them?
2)What is the best bootloader and why does the Gingerbread one not have sd cards work? Also what else doesn't work?
3)How can I check which radio I have and if I flash any bootloaders how do I check that?
Radio, Modem and Baseband are all the same thing. You can check which one you have by going to Settings >About Phone and checking the Baseband Version.
A new modem is easy to flash as a zip file from Recovery and you can find lots of them by searching in the Dev forum, however make sure you flash a modem that is for CM7 since you have Miui installed. For guidence you can search for Modem in the Miui or CM7 thread in the Dev forum.
As for bootloader, there is no way to check which you have, but as you installed Miui directly over 2.2 you should have the froyo bootloaders. CM7 and Miui were designed for froyo bootloaders. Some people say that GB bootloaders have better battery life but if you have GB bootloaders with CM7 you can't access you external SD card and other things may not work properly. I would suggest staying with froyo loaders for now and seeing how it goes.

I have read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9579987&postcount=11945
but I don't know if it still JPP is the best radio as this was back in December. For people in the UK what would be the best overall radio?
can anyone answer me which is the best CM7 modem for ORANGE ROMANIA? tks
Try jvp or jpy, I'm on orange uk, insanity cm and they both work fine for me don't forget you need cm7 modem, there are 2 threads in dev for this

About bootloaders
I have a SGS GT-I9000, and following
directions from ROM kitchen, I installed a Froyo 2.2.1 version.
It's I9000XXJPY with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22 kernel
and it says Rom kitchen v11.1-ZSJPK.
I wanted to install a Gingerbread version from ROM kitchen as well, but it says I have to make sure I have at least JVH bootloaders. Ummm, do I ? And what to do so i could install a gingerbread to my SGS ?
I installed a 2.2.1 froyo also from ROM kitchen I9000XXJVO with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22, build number XWJSD, hoping i'll install newer bootloaders with it.
But, i had problems with messaging so i'm gonna have to revert to previous one.
Do i have proper bootloaders or not and what could happen if i tried to install Gingerbread and don't have proper bootloaders.
Thanks in advance

[Q] Upgrading from Eclair to Gingerbread

My girlfriend's Galaxy S has the original firmware on it - icky icky painfully slow and laggy Eclair 2.1 and I would like to make her a tad happier by upgrading to the latest version of Gingerbread. For starters I am going to flash a stock XXJVQ and maybe a kernel with voodoo, as she doesn't need more optimization than that.
My question is can I simply flash the stock XXJVQ firmware over her Eclair with Odin, or do I require GB bootloaders for it to work? What about repartitioning?
Full stock will have bootloader, I'd flash ezbase gb first, just to be on the safe side as it definitely has bootloaders included.

I agree that installing EZ-Base GB before a full GB rom would be wise.
However as you are doing this for your girlfriend and if you screw it up you will look like a prat, I would suggest taking even more precautions and going by the numbers, installing first a Froyo stock ROM with bootloaders, then a GB Stock ROM with bootloaders, then the GB Kernel of your choice.
Cherchez la femme, after all.
Thank you for the answers so far. Also, is repartitioning with Odin required when upgrading from Eclair to GB?

Problem with upgrading from Eclair to Gingerbread.
When I start to upgrade via Kies, it says that I have isuficient memory ( minimum 3000 Mb), but in fact I have much mor free memory, at least 5 gb internal and 7,9 external.
What is the trick or what I missing, becouse I can not upgrade my phone.
Pleace help me.

Question about Rogers KK4

Hey guys, I know it may seem a little tedious or pointless, but I want to put the stock kk4 ROM on my Rogers captivate, however I don't want to see AT&T when I boot up. People say that the KK4 ROMs are the most stable, better than Froyo, which I was so tempted to go back to due to lame battery life and so many force closes, email problems, etc. So 1) Is it possible to see this Rogers, or is there a stock KK4 (GB) 2.3.5 I assume, ROM? Is it a good idea to keep my KK4 or should I go back to some 2.2 stuff? Thanks for your time guys really appreciate the input!

To do that you need to change your Param.lfs and get a kernel with a different bootscreen. I haven't used corn lately to know if THAT kernel has a different screen, but I know its the only kernel build from source to date. You can look up mobiletechvideos.com for how to change param.lfs. GL

Or he could flash Rogers GB Bootloaders and flash the Corn Kernel.

Edit: If you're looking for the Rogers GB Bootloaders, here it is http://www.mediafire.com/?h1iejva6x4ikdnu.
It comes with Heimdall, use it to flash the GB Bootloaders.
Or that. Just offering ideas. More than 1 way tackle a problem.

Try i9000 GB bootloader if u want to avoid the at&t bootscreen. You should try Apex 12.3 it's very great rom
Sorry for reviving an older thread, I was in the process of moving. Part of the question was whether or not I should stick to a kk4 "i897" romn my rogers captivate or go to ICS or to 2.2. Again thanks I really appreciate it.
Nothing to do with this thread but Usually OP for ICS roms have their own instructions. If you are on KK4 with Korn Corn just flash from there (might need to flash twice depending on rom). Like I said follow OP instructions but you should be good from kk4.
KoRn is a band, I think you meant Corn

Upgrading from Froyo to ICS

So my old phone is no used by my sister and is still running Fusion ROM on Android 2.2. For some reason the wifi is no longer working and I figure I would upgrade to ICS since I am redoing things anyway. I read another thread where a guy flashed straight from Froyo to ICS and is running ok, but I remember going from Android 2.1 to 2.2 was a pain and I had to wipe, flash back to stock, flash new bootloaders, and then the Froyo ROM. I would assume going all the way to ICS which has major changes would also require something complex but just want to be sure about the process. So am I supposed to use Odin to flash stock Gingerbread and bootloaders before I upgrade to ICS? Or is it really fine and all will work if I just flash an ICS based ROM from where I am right now?
I am thinking of flashing the SlimICS ROM unless someone can tell me a reason why that ROM is not very good?
Currently the phone has the 2.2 firmware, i897UCKB1 baseband, 2.6.32.9 kernel, and is running Fusion 1.9.8 ROM. I am not sure on the bootloader version, but I have a file on my PC from a long time ago called "galaxys-bootloader-JVB.tar.md5" that I think I probably used to update the bootloader all that time ago when I moved to Froyo.
See TRusselo's "[Guide] How to flash ANY Captivate Rom from Stock (including ICS)" that is a stickied thread in the Q&A Forum...

So, your saying I should flash to stock and then flash to gingerbread before moving to ICS then?
Nope. Just Read the OP of that Guide and all will be clear... Just Read the 1st sentence of that OP...Lol
