[TESTED] Garmin EcoRouteHD and Garmin Mechanic - Nexus 7 Accessories

I know there are a couple of posts regarding Garmin EcoRouteHD and Garmin Mechanic (install from Play Store), but just thought I'd post that I've tested them as working with the Nexus 7, (running stock JRO03D 4.1.1).
I've included some screenshots of the types of dials that it can show (depending on the information your car's onboard computer sends via it's OBD port). I cannot vouch for how accurate the information is (some of it is shown as 'estimated'). Some of the dials do seem to 'lag' a little (I accelerate and it takes up to about .5 seconds for the dial to reflect this change in state), but they generally work pretty well.
I'm not going to go into detail on what the EcoRouteHD hardware and Garmin Mechanic software do (check Garmin's website for that info), but in short -
Access real-time performance data for your vehicle
View live gauges for RPM, speed, intake manifold pressure, coolant temperature, timing advance, throttle position and more
Measure your vehicle's 0–30, 0–60, 1/8-mile and 1/4-mile times
Calculate your vehicle's horsepower and torque
Measure lateral acceleration with the Skidpad
Calculate your instant and average fuel economy over multiple trips
Record live OBD data, and export it for analysis
Track and collect data on multiple vehicles
Diagnose and reset your check engine light
Check your vehicle's self-test status for emissions certification

- EDIT -
I made a video of this device in my car, but there's too much of a reflection of my ugly mug on the Nexus 7 screen, so I scrapped the idea of uploading it. If people want, i can try reshoot a video of EcoRouteHD and Garmin Mechanic in action.

Nice! I use Torque myself with a bt obdII dongle. Works well. I've been using that on my Sensation until the N7. Forget gauge pods! LOL Does this app have themeing options? I know torque does. No biggie just a lil thing I like to do on mine
Nice alternative! :good:

No theming options unfortunately. Looking at pricing, I will agree the EcoRouterHD is pricey as it's restricted to working with only Garmin Satnavs and Garmin Mechanic. I originally bought the EcoRouteHD on a special with my Gatmin Satnav, and it's great to know I can still use it now that I no longer have my Garmin SatNav. Will look into get a cheap generic OBD BT Adaptor and Torque. Thansk for the info.

is the garmin dongle universal? as in it will work on all newer cars?

Hi there, great informations uberNoobZA
I hope you can ask me if you or anyone else tried Garmin Mechanic on Android 4.2 or above and experienced any issue
I have some glitch on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250 with Android 4.2.1 that makes my Ecoroute HD useless beacuse i can't see information after the connection, they seem "cutted", i can only see some numbers and letters here and there...
Thanks in advance

Same issue here. The gauges work but the levels of the gauges are not showing so you can't tell what is being measured.

Ok thanks, i was thinking about it and i found a little solution for now, i added more gauges reaching the maximum numer of informations ( 9 on my smartphone) so they all switch from "graphic mode" to only text, just because there isn't enought space to take them all in graphic mode, so the glichs are there only when they are shown as gauges.
I hope this may be usefull for someone
Anyway, i wrote to Garmin support, i hope they will fix it as soon as possible :fingers-crossed:

I use Torque Pro and a cheap Bluetooth ELM327 OBDII adapter. Works the same and is much cheaper then the Garmin stuff and you can use more then just Garmin apps. You can even turn your POS into a Lamborghini with SoundRacer.

Kind of the inverse of a question asked above.. Will the Gamin Mechanic app work with a non-Garmin BT adapter? Would you mind trying it out with your ELM327?
Not oppose to buying Torque, but curious about the Garmin app.
Thanks!

Bluetooth handset ?

I read on a forum today that the Nokia N810 (and n800 with firmware up-date) internet tablets support Bluetooth SAP (Sim Access Profile) meaning that they can basically be used like a bluetooth car kit to make and receive calls and display caller I.D. from any host phone that supports SAP (The Athena and TyTn being two that I know of). The N800 and N810 also support Dial Up Networking over bluetooth and many other profiles.
N800s are available for 200 quid from www.cex.co.uk (and probably less on Ebay). I cannot confirm that they support SAP for sure but videos and documentation I've seen sure do indicate this. Integrated with a windows mobile device and Chainfire's WMWifirouter application the two devices could work very well together - particularly since the N800/n810s have a webcam and native Flash 9 support. The N800 probably isn't a GREAT DEAL smaller than the Athena, though the N800 sure is: It looks a bit like a slinky, brushed aluminium TyTn.
As far as I know there is no standalone Bluetooth SAP kit however. Just headsets and earpieces with support for number display.
I hope this is of some help.
Well, whoever make a neat bluetooth headset with a dialpad for things thing will get my bucks thats for sure... bluetooth earpeace just doesn't do it.
BTW how do I make the phone the default application when I turn the screen on? I know this must be a simple thing but after countless hours of searching, still no answer. and I tried all the utils from SPB already
Thanks

I'm also looking for a bluetooth handset that could pair up with my HTC x7501 just like a car kit would. It would be nice to have the x7501 sit on my desk and use a separate handset to make calls with.
LG Style-I. Keypad, caller ID display. No SAP or vibrate alert. I thought about it, but since I want a hands-free headset for the car Im just sticking with my Jabra BT8010, which does have a vibrate feature.

I have found the ultimate bluetooth handset, it's £40 though but defo woth considering

big difference in price though, it`s $80 over here.
No, but I was looking for something really light weight, small form, bluetooth only that also has a small dial pad on it.. you know,
Did you see my post above about the LG Style-I? Its what you are looking for.
Yes, well not quite like the LG Style-I... it has horrible reviews, everything from awkward buttons, poor design to hard to read screen, and so on. It does look cool, but it is not as functional. We live in such a technological revolution that the mere fact that this item does not exists is a step backwards ... The retro phone is much better then the Style-I

Nook Color Mounted In Car

So I saw on reddit a nice clean looking install of an Asus tab in a BMW 335i and thought "I'll do the cheaper version all around". I went for the nook color installed in my 325i. Same method, so really the credit belongs to X-ception for his original concept. Nice work buddy.
I took it one step further and this cheap little tablet can be mounted either horizontally OR vertically and still be fine while riding. The downside of this is it most likely wiggles more than the transformer due to how I mounted it to allow either orientation. Also the transformer has some more weight to it.
Right now the audio is only connected via AUX cable, but I will be going the bluetooth route as well once I can manage to save $50 or so. For now it is a fun proof of concept and it can handle whatever kind of driving I've thrown at it. Again minimal wiggling and this is my first test with the nook in the car. For the minimal work required I'm certainly very happy with it.

Could you shrink your images a little? They're kind of massive even at 1680x1050 and I have to scroll 50% of each sideways
Thanks for fixing the images. What are you using to mount the nook?
I wanna see some pictures.
I was thinking about installing a Galaxy Tab in my 525i for a while now.

Damn you guys are fast. In the time it took to fix the pics I already had 2 complaints about them haha.
You get the mount here: http://www.proclipusa.com/ Just buy the mount NOT the device holder (they don't have one for the nook color).
Then you buy the "pad tab" mounting system here. http://www.thepadtab.com/
The cool part is I now have one extra pad tab mount (comes with 2) so I can mount my nook somewhere else as well like my wall or something. I'm trying to think of something more creative though.
I know you can't tell from the pic, but its a 6 speed standard transmission and the nook being in the car in NO way interferes with my driving or it would have been pulled out immediately.
Very nice install and use of the PadTab. We love this stuff. We saw the other install on this site and are impressed with the creativity here!

Nice work!!
I'm trying to figure out how to position/mount the nook in my Jeep without getting in the way of anything else, and without blocking the windshield. It would also need it to be within easy reach of the driver for those days when I go 4-wheeling solo.
I think it would be very neat to use with off-road trail apps and an external GPS.
Any ideas?
Here's what my cockpit looks like:
Honestly? Give windshield mounting a try. I do it in my Tacoma, and unless i move to look at it, the nook does not block my view at all, nor has it caused legal issues (i know it has been seen by officers). Having it mounted right above the center console makes it really easy to use as well, all by my self.

Maybe Try and mount it to the left of the wheel , other then that i would cover your radio with the exception of the volume since you can use the nook as a music device

I use these... I work outside and wear glasses. These lg's have served me well... Decent stereo sound, and pairs well with my sprint tab and evo. All controls work and they are comfortable for all day use and don't have a behind the ear form factor that makes a lot of bluetooth headsets very uncomfortable for glasses wearers.

I have a blueray player that has an ethernet port. My question is besides using a hardwire. What is the simplest way to connect it to my wireless router?
I thought of several, like a ehternet bridge to my laptop, a wireless ehernet bridge, and the adapter that runs internet threw the powerwires.
Which way is the easiest, lasting and permenent solution (besides hardwire).?

They're all usable and good solutions, but I'd personally go for going through power lines. I don't have it myself but plan to get it very soon. A friend has it and he strongly recommends it. He gets speeds round his whole house that wifi simply could not compete with.

Its like an extension box
You plug it into a socket, and it converts the socket to a socket + Ethernet port
So for e.g.
You plug in one where you place your router, and connect it by a cable
Next, near your TV/DVD player, you connect another, and then connect the cable
And then just you need to do so more setup, cant remember now, a bit sleepy, will post tomorrow
From my fingers to your eyez
It sounds like lies, but it's true!
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm
My mate picked up 2 for a fiver in a charity shop, so he has one in a socket near his router and then can move the other one round the house as required.
I've been advised that there are 2 different types - 85Mbps and 200Mbps. As long as you get the same type then you can mix and match makes, but he got a real bargain. The cheapest I can find on ebay is £32 for 2 200Mbps ones. If you're not too fussed about the bandwidth then you can get them cheaper.

The range is supposed to degrade anything over 300m, so that's quite a lot. Yes, obviously security would be an issue if the communication wasn't encrypted, but it is. You can set the encryption keys yourself, so it's down to you if it's not secure.

That's right, the technology to intelligently modulate a signal over existing power lines has been around since the 1960's (if not longer).

This is the features of the Carmobileproject:
1) FM Radio (web radio with Tune In app)
2) MP3 music player
3) GPS navigator (Sygic, Tom Tom, maps, ecc)
4) Phone (gsm and voip calls)
5) Player films
6) Internet and mail
7) Autodiagnosis real time with bluetooth EOBD interface
8) Satellite antitheft with realtime GPS Tracker
I planned and build an electronic circuit interface, which detects the theft and send to the tab a signal. So automatically start a call, a sms at my number and start the GPS tracking. In this way i can follow the thieves and recover the car.
9) Possibility of send a command to the car (by sms) so as activate some gadget in the car (for example turn off the engine so as interrupt the thieves sprint).
Actually in the tab run an AOKP rom (Milestone 6 android 4.0.4), but soon i will install AOKP 4.2.2. Thank you to addem1234, a guy of XDA which have build the last version of AOKP for our tab! A fantastic and super customizable ROM.

well, i use the 16GB internal for apps, mp3, and navigator maps. For the other (films, ecc.) i use OTG feature with pen drive 32GB.
I must modify the 30 pin dock connection for working the OTG and the charge from USB at the same time. In fact, if you connected a OTG cable in our tablet you can not powered it. I need to have also the power in the tab so as i can detect when the car is on or off.

well, it's no simple..... In any way, you have to build a custom cable with pin out of standard.
I have bought an original samsumg cable, open the 30 pin connector, extract the micro-contact and repositioned in the right pin. Than sold the wires. Look at this pictures:

The car is BMW X1. It has useful "glove box" in place of stock car infotainment I don't have. I've only made power and aux cording to the box. For now the dock is holding by itself with the plugs pushing the box top ant the rear and the front edge pushing rubbered flour. The tab and the rubber hold it intact. So all I need is to push the docked tab into box, it stands quite firm by itself. Without the tab the box can be easily closed with the dock in.
After a while the tab started to disconnect on some major bumps (which we have plenty here). I'm reconsidering an attachment to resolve this. However there be no major modifications, maybe some extra struts on the tab to push down, cause for now only dock is pushed down, not the tab.
The soft part based on Tasker works like a charm. Only video registration running on background causes minor issues, which may be related to the 7300’s low internal memory performance.
Thanks for showcasing your builds - one simple and one incredibly ambitious!
It seems like there's an entire computer (VIC-20 style ) at the back of the tab, is that to control the actuator? And is the actuator for controling on/off? Also, was it "simple" or "impossible" to relocate the buttons and AC panels? And what about controlling the radio stuff; amplifier is still stock, I presume?
Lots of questions but this is just too cool! I've seen a few car builds but nothing in this scale.

Hi! The hardware at the back of the tab drive the actuator and much more!! (power the tab, manage the USB OTG, manage antithieft interface, adapt the level of the output, ecc. ecc.)
It's impossible to relocate the power button!!!
The amplifier is an Audison 4x80W
For control the final volume i used a double logaritmic potentiometer with push button.
The push button drive the actuator
