I have a really strange problem when using my laptop as an access point. My Samsung Galaxy Ace had no problem connecting to either my or my wife's laptop access points initially till about a week ago. I use an HP while my wife uses a DELL. We both run Windows 7. But, here's when things started to get freaky.
1. The Ace even though connected through my laptop's AP Wi-fi cannot send or receive data after the first few seconds.
2. My wife's Dell XCD35 (ZTE Blade) has no problems when connected to my laptop's AP.
3. The Ace has no problem connecting to my wife's laptop AP or an Android AP.
I reflash and unrooted my phone and basically brought it back to factory settings - no luck.
Tried using other services for using my laptop as an accesspoint - mhotspot, virtual router and connectify - no luck.
tried static ip with manually configured DNS and gateway - no luck.
reinstalled the MS Virtual Wi-fi Miniport Adaptor driver - no luck.
Somehow, I think there is a security setting on the laptop that's preventing my phone from connecting to the network and the internet.
I tried using Connectify's drag and drop feature to send a file, but it cannot find the phone. I cannot ping the phone after the first few seconds which is basically when I get internet connectivity.
There are no other features like MAC address binding or anything like for laptop APs.
It's getting really frustrating now because it starts off working and then stops.
Any help/guidance would be appreciated.

No luck though.

Thanks, Just might have to.
Sad though - works on other machines but my own. Worse is that is out of warranty. Had it for over a year.
i have this same problem once in a while also
but i think its the wifi wich connects but doesnt transmit any data
thanks to this problem i couldnt use wifi for over a week =_=
hey if it works on your wife's phone, then it is definitely the phones fault. i had the same problem on my gio 2 weeks ago, and to see it if was the phones problem, i turned on wifi, then it said connected, although no data could be sent/received. i rebooted with the wifi still connected then the internet worked, but if i turned it off, i had to repeat procedure. i fixed it by flashing a new rom through cwm, by wiping data/cache/dalvikcache, then flashed the rom twice and wiped the same 3 before booting. hopefully one of those things i did helped you

Not only does it work with my wife's phone, but it also works on my wife's computer.
I've already done more than just wiped the cache/dalvik cache, and yes, even reflashed 3 times but with ODIN. CWM flash won't make that much of a difference but I'll give it a shot.

yes I did. Even tried with a battery pull. Nothing!
I also noticed a few more things:
1. It's definitely the device because I get the Wi-fi error problem more frequently. This despite waiting atleast 5 minutes between each on/off cycle.
2. Connectify (or any other virtual router service) shows the client dropping after the first few seconds but the device still shows connected.
3. Device Wi-fi switches off on it's own and then refuses to start (the wi-fi error all over again). This never happened before, so long the wi-fi was connected, it would remain on until switched off or until the phone died on low battery.
Time for a new device?

Yes, WPA/WPA2 encryption, but it doesn't help if I remove it.
I just spent more than an hour on my wife's laptop AP just to make sure the problem is still the same.
Perhaps if I used a different version of Connectify?

I've searched, but none that address this problem specifically. Besides, it's hard to pin point what the problem really is.
I've downgraded the version of Connectify to one that my wife's laptop uses, but no luck. There was even a hotfix available from Microsoft but that didn't change a thing at all.

I have a wiress router at home that i used with PDA2k. Surfing net over TKIP-PSK encrypted connection worked fine for many months.
One day, there was some problem connecting or it hung up (dont remember exactly), so i popped out battery and put it back in ... and since that day, i cannot make a TKIP-PSK connection with the phone to anything. If i set up router as OPEN point (no passwd), the f**king phone connects!
I did:
1. reset router
2. reflashed router.
3. Hard reset phone
4. Reflashed phone with WM2003 and older radio rom.
5. Reflashed WM05
6. Reflashed Wm2003 and latest radio rom
7. Tried different router.
No results!
I live in apartment building and cant leave my router in the open. Other encryption modes supported by PDA2k dont work either.
I DONT GET IT!!! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT SH*T STOPPED WORKING? If some hardware chip died, WIFI wouldnt work at all! But it works for non-encrypted connections!!
Unbelievable sad story. Everything points for some hv failure, but I just don't believe it. Try some more routers.
Try reflashing to older radio ROM. It may help.......

The crypto stuff is done on-board the wifi IIRC, so that's possible.
I once heard of people having problems on the phone when using the keyboard for the encyption key. The recommendation was to use the on-screen keyboard to ensure the key is entered correctly. Might be worth a try, but try it with the most basic encryption settings i.e. wep to keep things simple. Make sure you disable EAP in the phone settings.
The problem could be within the storage space within the Wifi hardware. It has it's own registers for the actual settings. If some were in nvram that maintained it's state, then corruption to these would be bad.
A last resort might be to take of the battery for a few days to completely drain the backup battery. If there are any volatile storage areas maintained by this that are not cleared during a hard reset, then a complete power down will reset them. One of the problems with this phone is that you cannot fully switch it off.
Take the last two paragraphs with a pinch of salt; I've never looked into the hardware on these phones in any great detail, so it's all guesswork.
ok , i'll try a full powerdown.
i have windows 2005.
just to confirm : i will only lose the RAMdisk with temp files? the rest of the stuff is in the flash?
Yes, that's correct.
well, i finally got around to draining the backup battery.
any kind of encryption/password authentication over WIFI no longer works.
time to buy a new pda phone.

Had the same problem with my set(wm5). Did not know why, could not log into my wep network. After hardreset , and leaving the phone alone for 10 mins, it was functional again . Thought i just voice out .
Friends,
I've been proud of my TYTN II for the last thre months that I've owned it... until recently though.
Last week, my WiFi connection stopped getting activated/swichted on. Howsoever, I may try, it would not get activated, leave alone discover the network.
I tried re-flashing it, soft-resetting, hard-resetting, I mean practically everything I could, but to no avail.
Has anyone faced this problem before, and found a solution to the same. Would appreciate if you could share the same with me. I really do not want to take it for servicing, as I fear it would take me easily a week to get it back if I take it to the Workshop.
Thanks in advance,
Atul
Let me ask a couple of questions.
Can you turn wifi on or do you get an error?
If wifi turns on does it see any access points?
have you flashed your rom on your phone?
have you tried another access point for wifi?
do you have any wifi applications installed like wififofum?
Hi Chumley,
thanks for the prompt response...
I do not get any error, not even any message hen I try to activate the WiFi. Just that the rainbow circle keeps rotating (hour-glass equivalent of indows), and then shows the WiFi is still inactive (small x near the WiFi icon).
I tried re-flashig with the latest ROM available on the HTC website, but to no avail.
Trying another access point does not help either, neither would it, I guess, since its not a problem of signal strength, as much as it seems to be of the Wireless on the Kaiser not getting activated.
No 3rd party applications installed either, after the last re-flashing, still no luck.
Anything from the above, that rings a bell?
If it does it after a flash I would think you have a defective wireless adapater. Sorry.
Guess it should not be a problem as mine is still under warranty... just abt. 3 months old. But my only worry is, as I mentioned in the original post, the time it would tk. to get it fixed by the Service Centre, or if at all it is a correctible problem... I think time to ask for a favour from a friend... a standby mobile while I await mine back
If you let it go free and it comes back, then it's yours forever.
Hello, same problem here:
two days ago my wifi connection stopped suddenly and cannot activate it from the comm manager. When I click in the WIFI Icon, rainbow circle keeps rotating and PDA perfomance goes down.
any ideas :?
Hueznar,
I've already given mine for repair at Service Centre two days back, and am still awaiting it back.
Shall let you know how it goes once I get it back
WiFi would not activate: Motherboard concked off

I don't know why...really.

My router works good with my bros and sis MAC books.
So I have no idea why.

Wifi access point problem
I had a problem where suddenly after months of use with my home wifi router, it suddenly would not connect with the router anymore. Would show that it was trying to connect, and then would suddenly not connect and try another router on the list.
I tried reseting and everything. Tried re-entering the password for my router as I thought that was the problem. finally the only fix i found to work was to actually delete the access point from the phone... then reset and then let it find it all over again from scratch. And miraculously that time it worked.
I know this is not exactly your problem, but hope it helps.

By changing it to channel 1 in my router, it kinda worked..
It says Available now. Nothing else... The connect option it still there button left.
That's my update.
just in case letting you know that I disabled all MEdia net and ISP GPRS so I won't get charged because I'm not paying for my onlince services or any mobile plan with internet.
My brother told me that all WIFI connects directly to internet and it won't matter if I don't have a plan for mobile.
Correct me here, if im wrong.
Thanks.

I have successfully flashed my phone with the CyanogenMod-4.2.4 rom, enabled WIFI and can browse the internet.
BUT, when I try to activate my Gmail through the activation wizard with WIFI enabled I get the following error message: “Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.”
I am using a T-Mobile pre-paid account, which means I don't have a data plan, so activation over WIFI is my only option.
Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Frustrating is more like it. I have spent days search this forum and the web for an answer.
I started out with CyanogenMod-4.2.3 installed and I thought that might have been the problem so last night I flashed 4.2.4 and still have the same problem.
I can browse the internet so I have a hard time believing it is a connection problem. I did come across a post earlier this week where someone was having issues with his WPA2 connection. Later today I will change the connection type and see if that fixes the problem.
If you can think of anything else I might try that would be great.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I finally got it to work and for those who may run across this thread with the same issue here what I did:
I ran across a thread on a different forum that stated the reason I was having the problem was because I skipped the initial activation process when the phone was first turned on. Well with CM4.2.4 and other rooted roms there is an option to skip the initial activation process, which I did.
So I went back and reread the other threads about how to activate your phone over wifi and they all state the same thing, you will need root access, which allows you access to execute debug commands from your PC to control your phone.
So I did a hard reset and re-flashed CM4.2.4. Then after I rebooted my phone I followed the instruction on this thread http://modmygphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9471 to turn on the wifi. Once the wifi was on I disconnected my phone from my computer and proceeded to activate it, which worked like a charm.
Hi guys, I've had a look around the net and asked on other forums, but can't seem to find the answer to my problems, so someone recommended here.
Apologies, if this has already been covered, but I did have a search and couldn't find what I was looking for.
I think I have two problems, don't know if they are related, but don't think so.
Problem 1:
Got the Galaxy S for my daughter for Christmas. She has never been able to log in to the android marketplace. She was using the her google log in which wasn't a gmail account. Today I signed her up a gmail account, and tried again and got the following error message:
You don't have a network connection.
This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. Please try again when connected to a mobile network, or connect to a wi-fi network. If the problem continues, call customer care.

The phone is definitely connected the net by wi-fi, which I have proved to be working correctly.
Problem 2:
To try and solve problem 1, I thought I would see if the firmware was up-to-date, however, I can't get the phone to connect to Kies. I have tried on two different laptops, one running Vista and one Windows 7. It seems to be saying it's some kind of driver problem. I have clicked on install drivers on Kies, but it makes no difference.
I have made sure the phone is selected Kies. I have also tried selecting mass storage and connecting through My Computer, but still it doesn't recognise the phone.
I believe the phone's firmware is out of date, as it is 2.1 update 1 and I believe 2.2 is available.
Apologies for the long post, can anybody help me to get Kies and marketplace working?
I am not interested in jailbreaking the phone, as it's for my daughter.
The phone is a contract phone, in the UK with orange. I have made sure orange safe guard is not active.
Thanks in advance, if you need anymore infor, i will try and supply it.
Any idea's?
Bump.
Can anybody help or is the best option to try a factory restore / take it back to the shop?
Well there is alot of tread that explain how you connect to kies.
If you can use internet then it should work.
Have you try to power of the phone and wait 5 minutes and then power it on?

I have got the market place working by doing a factory restore, but for the life of me, I can't get the phoned connected to Kies to do a firmware update.
I have tried on 4 different laptops.
1. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
2. Windows 7 Home Basic.
3. Windows Vista.
4. Windows XP.
and I can't get it to connect on any of them.
I have tried un-installing and re-installing Kies. I have tried using different usb wires and ports. Phone charges by usb when plugged in.
I have tried connecting the phone in both Kies mode and Mass Storage mode.
The error I keep getting seems to be a driver error:
Device Driver software was not successfully installed.
Please consult your device manufacturer for assistance in getting this device installed.

tell me if that trick works
Are you using a USB hub? If so don't . Plug it straight into the rear USB of your computer.
Do you have Bluetooth active? Turn it off.
Are you using any other Home than the one it came with (the screen you see when you first turn it on)? Go back to the stock TW Launcher
In the Kies Tools menu click on Install Driver and then try again after it's finished.
Finally if it is still not connecting leave it plugged in and go into device manager. If the drivers show up there they should be listed as Samsung i9000 if I remember then right click and un-install drivers then unplug phone and plug it back in after a few moments.
Also use the cabel that did come with.the phone.

Wi-Fi stopped working on my Captivate today. The device says it is connected but I am not actually connected to my home network. The network is fine because every other wireless device in the house connects and communicates. Specs:
Slim-I897-4.2.2.build.1-OFFICIAL (note: I was using RC1 when the problem started this morning. I decided to flash the new build just now to see if that would change anything but it didn't)
straosk semaphore 3.0.66
So far I've shut it down, removed the battery, told it to forget Wi-Fi connections and re-entered them, and restarted my router (although everything else attached to it continues to work just fine). The phone wasn't shaken, stirred, dropped, wet, or abused in any way. It just stopped connecting to Wi-Fi!
Any troubleshooting advice will be greatly appreciated.

Late last night one of my kids told me her phone (Pantech) didn't have wi-fi, either. Right now I'm checking the network for interference since the laptop and printer are working fine wirelessly but the phones and Wii are not. I'll post what I find out after I figure out the issue. Thanks!
Check that they're all assigned IP addresses etc. DNS error most likely, probably due to DHCP not being released fast enough and network clogging up. Happened at our work not too long ago, hope this helps.

That was it, or something like it. I changed the router over to OpenDNS, ditto for my phone, and assigned a static IP to the phone. Worked fine after that. I have no idea what changed, but you got me going in the right direction. Thanks!
