Format the internal and external(if you used one) too.
You can format them via the phone or by connecting them to a pc in mass storage mode

if on safe kernel you can do above if not, go to safe first or you will wind up bricking it.

[Q] Safe to format internal SD?

Hey guys, after having my phone for coming up on 2 years, my Internal SD has been filled with tons of garbage apps that I've tried, uninstalled, and a bunch of other stuff. I was wondering - what is the best procedure for formatting this to clean it up a little? If I copy my Titanium Backup folder to my PC (some savegames i want on there ) am I pretty much safe to just format it? Is there anything I should know?
Can anybody offer me any information on this

I also need to knw, if its safe to format Internal SD.
Since im on ICS, i have noticed many of my Games (Gameloft) are not working properly and continuously crashing, previously i was on GB, I think its because of the data stored(game data) or any thing else in there. Agn, is it safe to format Internal SD, that is approx 6gb. ?
If Yes, then what items are to be made backup?
You can format your internal sd card no problem. Personally I like to copy everything off the internal sd card onto my pc first. Once this data is safe I delete it off the phone. Restart in recovery, format the internal sd card & do a factory reset, clear cache and dalvick cache.
Now phone is like new...

Stop spouting nonsense. The internal SD is separate from system.
Knowledge is Power. Guard it well.

Although I'm not certain, I would think that I might lose some app data, but all the important system files are in /system

Even formatting on a computer should not affect System partition. Not unless if you are using ADB commands to specifically format the internal SD. That's a LOT of extra effort.

I haven't tried this, but I'm assuming Snapper's correct on this subject. The PC will only mount the /sdcard partition, which you should be able to wipe without losing any of your /system data.

This happens when external SD is there.Try removing the SD card and check whether pictures r still there.
Also the gmail account sync with Picassa n pull in pictures from there.check that too.
Thank u Dr.Ketan ,it did work indeed! but the external_SD folder still carries my previous downloads?? This external_SD folder points to files of my external sd card right? how can i format files in this? Thank u.
Yes i said, you have to flash ext card with setting-storage
N select flash sd card
Or
u can format with pc like this( i recommend this)
keep usb debbuging on
Connect device, select connect to pc from notification
You will find separate drive letter for ext mory card
Rt click on drive letter n format

[Q] How to format internal storage in ICS

Hello,
After flashing ICS rom, I want to have completely fresh phone. I wanted to format internal storage (as some stuff from previous 2.3.6 is there) but can't find this option in ICS.
Any hints?
Should be in mounts in cwm

is this option not available to you?
menu>settings> storage>internal SD> format SD
Maybe this could do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709398 (Make sure you got the right storage though)

In GB there is such option, in ICS not. Anyway, I simply connected the phone in storage mode, removed all dirs and files from it. Then factory reset, rom flash ... and now I have a clean system
Thanks for your support.
Or you can connect USB , go to My Computers and Right click on your SD card and Format.
Simple.

i dont understand. all my pics/videos are there after i flash a new rom
flashing a ROM, assuming you do a wipe leaves the SD card portion intact.

So there is an Sdcard partition then.
No, Android storage is structured so there is a 'virtual sd card' which is just part of the total phone storage.

Are you saying that when you are in recovery and go to wipe and format and choose "wipe everything but sd card", your sdcard partition will still get wiped?
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Custom recoveries are smart enough not to wipe out the internal SD location, regardless of whether it's a separate partition or not. The only way it'll get wiped is if you specifically tell it to (and as far as I can remember, by default, no recovery wipes the SD location).

Right, this has always been my understanding as well.. but it sounds like some think that the /sdcard directory will be formatted when wiping data through recovery.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Recoveries usually only wipe the system information, not the ALL of the user data, this is normal. If you'd like it all all gone there is an option in either TWRP or CWM respectively

Try doing a test with another card before flash again new ROM. Maybe your card is defective.
I do not know, I hdont have other ideas, perhaps colleagues to come with other solutions.

I think backing up data from sd, formating it and transfering dta back will help more than reflashing phones software. You got problem when you was using sd with other device, your phone didn't have any problem.
P.S. Didn't read all your posts, I used tapatolk. Try to repartition you sd card. There was problems with custom recoveries with some sd cards if theh was not repartitioned. Look in xda how to repartition sd card.
