Hi there, first post on this forum, sorry for any mistakes.
I have 2 problems with my SGS: (Running an ICS root, not sure which one, came with it on when I bought it on eBay a couple of weeks ago.)
1: I have a charging problem where it will sometimes charged fully, which I am happy with, but other times it will actually discharge whilst 'charging' according to the lock screen. It will charge sometimes, slow down, then go backwards after a while, ending up with a flat phone when I wake up in the morning... The problem started when I used a wall charger from a SG Spica, but then worked fine again when I used the charger I got with the phone. It has now started to screw up again which is annoying. I have purchased a new 3500Mah battery for it so I don't know whether this will sort the problem out.
2: The mini USB port is slightly broken so I have to pull up on the cable otherwise it isn't picked up and won't charge. This is also annoying as if it moves slightly during a charge it won't charge at all. I tried fixing it with a toothpick but it didn't really help. I think the problem is that the connector/contact is slightly bent.
Thanks for your help!

well, If there is a problem with your micro USB, than you need to fix this first, it may be the root cause of your problem
you can find a guide on How to fix it on My android collections link below

Where will I be able to purchase a new micro USB from? I think I would be able to do this otherwise.

yep, and if the USB pins are shorting in the micro USB slot or your battery contacts needs some cleaning, these can happen, as well it looks as though you have too many notifications or widgets running, also a reason for heavy battery consumption.

Got an NC for Christmas and after reading all the awesome help on here got it rooted and set up the way I wanted it. So I plug it in night before last and it wont charge. Had to hold it at a certain angle then when I let go it would quit. I call B&N and they were gonna send me a cable. I said no the port is bad and I tried another usb cable and got the same result. So they are sending me another NC should be here tomorrow. I had barely 20% battery when I restored it to stock (which they told me to do before sending it back) or I would have been screwed. Anyone else had his problem? Also she told at first that another USB cable wouldn't work on it?? Anyone else use another cable or phone charger?
Thanks again for all the great info on here!!
All I know is that the mini-usb port on my NC -- where the charging cable plugs in -- is a mess. I have to insert the plug at a sharp angle and wiggle/force it, before it will go all the way into the port. (lame!)
On another note, the black plastic around the larger USB plug at the other end of the cable fell apart completely on the second day I had the NC. That end of the cable is now being held together by electrical tape. (even more lame!)
I'm considering an RMA for the entire unit to try my luck with a new one...
PS: performance wise, once rooted, this thing kicks total ass for $250!
Yeah, once mine is plugged in if I push the cable around it will stop charging.
I wonder if that Tear down gave us a reason for this?
After reading lots of posts over the past months it seems the port/plug is the most often reported problem .. I have two units and one (the first) is just fine, the other had difficulty with plug insertion but once inserted was fine. I tried the plug from #2 on #1 and yup, it was a problem to insert, so perhaps the B&N supplied cable is the problematic part, not the NC itself?
Saw that the EU has/will 'standardize' on the uUSB for charging .. personally don't understand ... it can't make that much difference in design/mfg and the miniUSB is very much more preferable to me .. sturdier it seems ... but it is what it is and I still love my NC!!!!

NC #1 that I got last Thursday had a fault USB port, as in I had a b!tch of a time getting the USB cable inserted, but managed it twice on Thursday for initial charge and a second time to try something sideloaded from Calibre. (Actually was about to return it as soon as I got it home and had trouble with the cable insertion until just as I was about to give up and pack it up, the cable went in...)
The next morning no amount of fiddling would allow me to insert the cable, so I factory reset and went back to the B&N for a horrid cs experience before they finally deigned to replace it. NC #2 the cable inserts MUCH more readily into...
Crossing fingers that nothing else goes wrong with #2. Ended up giving up on a pushed 1.01 update and sideloaded it last night, but first try was a phail, 2nd try went as expected. They need a user fw check and initiate fw update app as their OTA doesn't seem to be very robust or even work AFAICT.

Sounds like the charging port is a piece of crap. Still love the NC but I dread everytime I have to plug it in to charge it. Also when I plug it in to the computer or the wall the screen goes crazy and is virtually unusable. Read a few cases on here but no real explanation as to why.
As far as the update. Had to sideload it on both of the NC's i have had. Never would push it to it. Strange.
My first NC had a bad charging port. I returned it immediately. The second is fine.

Does your screen act up when plugged in? Mine does either plugged in the wall or the computer. Just curious how many people have this issue??
I haven't returned mine. The cable that comes with it is difficult to insert, but if I fiddle with it, it goes in. I have a generic cable that I use to connect it to my PC and it charges it, too. It may be slower and doesn't indicate that it is charging, but if I leave it plugged in all night, it is fully charged in the morning.

You do realize the NC (and most phones) uses MicroUSB, right? And actually MicroUSB is rated for more insertions and is sturdier.
The reason the NC's cable is a PITA is because it's not a standard MicroUSB, it has extra pins on each side to deliver the 1.9A of current that the NC charges at.

Great info. What I was wondering about. One question....will it hurt the NC port to use a standard micro usb cable to charge or connect to the computer?? I did on my first one and thought that may have been the reason it went bad.

I would not think so, in fact if that were the case I'd hope B&N would have had the jack not fit normal MicroUSB cables, but who knows.
Also B&N knows users aren't going to unplug the cable from their charger and plug it into their computer.. At least a reasonable number of users won't do this, although I might be the exception having a MiniUSB and MicroUSB dangling out from under my monitor for plugging in stuff
I've plugged mine into my computer numerous times, no problems so far. It does charge from any USB source, albeit slow.
On the new one. No.

Yep. #2 has that problem while #1 did not. I notice it on #2 as soon as I had gotten home and had it charging and was trying to do the setup/registration... It was an exercise in frustration...
I'm going to be letting #2 discharge today, then do a full charge and carefully track how much time I get off the charge since I've read a battery runtime thread on the B&N forums. (Very low backlight & WiFi off.) Might need to return #2 for battery problems as it seems very short to me although I have not been keeping careful track of how long I've been running between charges...

It is very frustrating! Guess will just have to quit using while charging. About the battery, are these like the new phones where you can just charge them each night? I do this on my Droid X just wondering if it would hurt these batteries?

I have this problem. I believe this is caused by the AC adapter. I went to my local B&N and hooked up my nook to their charger and had no problems. I called B&N support and explained the problem to them. They said they would send me a new AC adapter which should have arrived yesterday. It hasn't arrived yet but I think that should fix the problem.
I also have a problem with having to insert the micro usb in at a funny angle, but once in it charges.

Yeah I have insert my USB at an angle as well. Once there though it is fine.
Would like to know about the battery though as I stated in a post above.
My sister bought one on Monday with a bad port. She took it back and got a new one.
BTW - My sister so liked my rooted Nook she went and bought one. She came straight to my house to have me root and install apps.

have you tried with different charger?
I wonder why try another charger?
I've had the same problem a year ago. I was able to fix the problem by pushing in the pins inside the charging port. However this only buys time. I was able to fix the problem completely by purchasing charging port from eBay with the same revision 1.0 ( in my case ). I was able to install the part in less than 10 minutes and the problem is solved
Had the same problem few days back I just inserted a small pin inside the charging port and bent the pin inside the charging port very little don't know will it help but worked for me just be careful don't apply too much pressure as it may damage the pin

Jesus i want to cry when Note users have this problem!. Its an USB port problem, not chargers, not software. You need to replace the whole USB Board (which is attached at the bottom of the motherboard). If you want a temporal solution turn off your phone, remove your battery and then clean your usb port with a thin brush and alcohol and leave it for 30 min. Then put your battery and charge your phone. Turn on and then unplug your cable, it should work fine for some time. Its a problem with the 75% of the Galaxy Notes in the world. Ive changed my port 2 times in only one year! I dont know why samsung did not put a slinding usb protector like some galaxy devices... sorry my bad english and good luck!
when I changed my usb port, I bought 2 in case. 2 usb ports cost me 18 dollars and change, shipped from China. took 2 weeks to arrive. must match the revision number which is written on the original board. mine was revision 1.0. took less than 10 minutes to install. problem solved.
maybe temporary but free

cured my phone of the same problem with a paint brush and proper contact cleaner ( NOT WD40 OR LIKE) in the usb charger hole.
stuff known technically as pocket fegg gets in and causes leakage across contacts. however, worst case is connector is damaged and needs replacing as above.
Get the port replaced.
I had a similar issue.
<drunkbabble>
My microusb car charger is constantly used by the many female microusb ports from my friends and hitchhikers.
So it had a loose contact with my phone now because the Galaxy Y 's were too tight.
And the it charges / not charges / charges ... at about 150 times a minute.
</drunkbabble>
In your case your port might have suffered or you have dirt at the contacts. Try blowing it out with canned air and look for any visual clues of damage.
Got this problem right now and its really annoying.
I nearly wanted to throw my phone at the wall because of the dumb low battery noise playing like 20000 times a second .
My Desire HD and crapberry also decided to break today too ffs .
Gonna send them off to get repaired in the morning, back to my good old reliable nokia 3310 in the mean time
i am having this issue for over a month now. i changed the battery too lately. was on CM 10.1 and thought it was a ROM issue but then i found it to be the same as i switched to stock ROM.
And it would be real helpful if anyone of you guys could let me know how much changing the usb port cost me.
Clean It With A Little Whisky :]
cotton, dip it in a little whisky and then clean the usb port with a help of a needle/pin... worked for me :]
*make sure your phone is turned off and the battery is out while you do this application*
try and clean your charger as well.. Cheers!
Charging port issue!
I had exactly the same issue on my Galaxy Note-1. and stumbled across this thread. It confirmed the suspicions I already had. So I got my charging port changed. The phone is back to normal!
My GT-N7000 yesterday developed this issue:
When I boot it (no USB cable to power it), the battery shows empty (grep battery icon, with a charging circle).
A second or so later, it switches to show a half-full battery, with charging dots below. and it vibrates for about a second.
Again, another second ro so later it goes back to showing an empty battery and the cycle continues.
If I attach a UCB charging cable, it boots fine, shows the battery as 100%
If I remove the charging cable, it loses power. When switched on again, this all starts over.
I saw this on ICS (4.0.4, stock, German) and there i also had the battery icon in normal more switching between
charging and blinking to not charging. I found a recommendation that upgrading might help, so I
did apply the JB update I had downloaded a few days ago, but this does happen
under JB too (OTA German 4.0.4, then flashed with Phil's-stock plus cwn6)
Is there anything can can be done? Is this a hardware issue or something that some form of total reset might cure?
As it is, I cannot use the phone w/o having it externally powered through my powerbank or car charger.
This happens with two batteries, so it's not the battery that is broken
I really think this one is battery problem as I have experienced the same thing..
are the batteries you tested New?

No, I've had both a fow a while.
I may buy a third just to test but I fear I may have to get a replacement phone soon , sniff
Though I would suggest that you get a new set of batteries...they solved the problem for me.
While you are at it, please search the forum for another solution that worked for me- "cleaning the micro-usb slot"...its an easy process but needs to be done a little carefully.
either of the two would definitely work for you...speaking from experience!

Hello,
I have problem with charging. The phone is charging very slowly or not at all. Sometimes I can pull out and plug in and then it starts to load (but slowly). I checked other chargers and cables. I wiped all and installed new roms and nothing changed. Yesterday I saw that phone is charging in TWRP (but not always). What could be the reason? Battery, usb port?
Thanks.
Turn it off and try to clean the USB port. Most of the times it's not damaged, just dirty as hell.
Use tootpicks or q-tips, blow it, whatever. Just try to get it clean.
I managed to buy a new bottom pcb with usb port on ebay for less than £10 when mine burnt out. Does the port smell of burning?
Very easy to change if this is your problem

How long are you using your phone?
If it's more than a year and a half~, i would recommend you to buy a new battery.
A lot of people having battery related issues in the last few months including myself and for me replacing the battery did the trick.

Before I changed the battery the phone stopped responding to the charger, also it wasn't visible in the computer, only in fastboot, I changed the battery but unfortunately i dont solve the problem
Hi! This just happened to me as well after changing the battery to a new one (Nohon). It only charges in Fastboot or Recovery mode. Even after factory reset and rom reinstalled. Anyone found a solution for this?
Edit: it does charge in normal mode but on slow chargers, no qc3...
I had the same problem, I'm suspecting something in Lineage 15 or some new firmware was causing it.
Unfortunately after i roll back it did not solve the issue.
I have replaced battery but it does not solve the problem, QC adapters just do not work.
The odd thing is that a low quality cable on QC adapters or non QC adapters will have no problem.
And somehow trying to block off the data pin does not work as well.
I've rolled back to Lineage 14 but it sort of "fake" charge, percentage goes up really fast but in reality it barely charged.
EDIT: seems like some of the oreo firmware was causing it, i have downgraded back to 8.4.19 with lineage 14.1
Hi guys
I have this problem a few days , plug charger and very slow charging , sometimes stop charging ! Reset factory not changing (org miui my rom and 9.6.2 version)
I can downgrade to witch rom of android 7 without break of antirollback ?
1) Can't charge while it is in normal mode.
2) Can't charge with USB C to C
3) Can only charge using USB A to C, while the phone is turned off. It still splashes the logo and vibrates repeatedly.
The port is not visible to any laptop, so adb and fastboot seem out of the question.
The stock recovery on this device has "apply update from SD card", so I need to figure out how an update.zip should look like.
Razer have a bunch of older stock ROMs on their site.
Can I just take the latest, rename it update.zip, put it on a micro SD and use the stock recovery to fix things?
Just saw the tear down. It's worse than my N10+ port PCB to replace.
However if the battery is getting near its lifespan maybe now is the time as the battery needs to come out anyway to replace the port PCB.
The port PCB price is probably low.

The other thing I just found is that when I use "apply update from ADB" it used to complain about init.usb.rc, init.usb.configfs.rc. I looked at both files. 0B length with 1969 date on them. What?
There must be some way to flash a recovery from the sd card instead of using the USB port.
The thing is the battery held the whole day after a night charge yesterday, so probably not the battery. I have a feeling some apps I used to "improve" the battery and "fix" the system deleted some bits.

If you have a bad usb port PCB I would replace it now.
They can cause a lot of mischief and in other services that you never expect it to.
The battery is cheap so it's easiest to replace it at the same time as you need to pull it anyway.
200 or more full charge cycles, replace.
One more thing. I bought a wireless charger to see if it is 100% the port, and the wireless charger has not made anything easier. It seems not capable of getting any charge in. So at the moment I have only one to charge it, turn it off and use USB A to USB C cable.

Probably a defective charge port PCB... you can try a factory reset or reflashing the stock firmware if really want to test it.
Check for any signs of battery (rear panel or display bulging) swelling; replace battery asap if present! Batteries can fail at any time.

I have now done the factory reset, didn't help. Nothing is bulging. I would like to flash a fresh factory ROM, but I have no access to the port. So, no fastboot and no adb. I can't even install proper drivers in Win10 PRO since the laptop does not recognize the phone, at all.
I am searching now for any solutions with the sd card. People used to do that, updates with *.zip on an sd.
Since it is out of warranty anyway now, I have finally unlocked the bootloader.
I am trying to find out if the ROMs Razer provide on their site are signed or not.

The port PCB needs replaced... if you're lucky that's it.
Don't make it harder than it needs too be...

I don't know if you have had a chance to see the USB port assembly on Ebay? Some prices are close to $120. Add to that labor costs (unless you think I should do the deed myself) or costs for tools and fresh adhesive for the plastic that covers speakers, etc... and it is going cost me more than I paid for it new.

Ok, thank you for finding this, but it looks like the ribon connector wire only. The PCB besides the port also has the microphone, I think. It appears to be sold as a unit. If the problem is the wire, then sure this would be the part.
In any case, I have managed to get the wireless charger to charge. Depending on how fast the charge will be lost today will tell say something about the battery.

I'm just saying keep looking. I was surprised at the apparent lack of availability though.
Meh I feel your pain...
Maybe one of the mainstream parts venders or buy a cheap Ebay one with busted display.
My Note 10+'s port PCB goes for $20, that surprised me.

If you have a bad usb port PCB I would replace it now.
They can cause a lot of mischief and in other services that you never expect it to.
The battery is cheap so it's easiest to replace it at the same time as you need to pull it anyway.
200 or more full charge cycles, replace.

Unfortunately replacing the USB charge board and port in the phone doesn't always fix it. I have a box of nearly a dozen RP2 main boards I need to dig through to figure out what the actual cause of the charging boot loop

Have you played with any OS shortcut apps on it?
The Android Setup apk will get screwed up if you access it after the original setup.
Specifically it will alter the port behavior when you connect with it. Very irritating, took me days to finally track it down on my 10+
If you clear it's data in settings it may leave the null mark that's screwing it up. Some 3rd party apps can completely clear that null mark.
Otherwise factory reset.

This is a hardware issue, nothing any kind of reset can fix or app clearing. Even if you have the device entirely powered off, plug it in on anything 2Amp or higher, it'll loop

That's not how the issue I saw behaved; only happened with the device powered on and it didn't boot loop. Just an annoying pop up message.
If it has a port PCB, try replacing that. If it's just a charge port with no components on it... it's likely either corrupted firmware (reflash) or a mobo failure.
A loose connection or bad contact is also possible.
That's my guess...
