Well what do we have here?
This is the eagerly awaited nandroid of the latest update for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note (SGH-T879)
This update is available OTA or manually through Kies, however, most people have not been able to install the update.
Here are the details of the update:
Improvements
Error: ‘Enter MAC address’ after entering MAC address
Weather widget does not show current location
MobileLife contacts addresses combined into a single field
This nandroid was taken from my Tmo Note on 8/14/2012 after successfully installing the OTA.
Please Note: This is only the nandroid backup for the latest TMo Note update. It does not include the new modem. I still need to pull the files and for the UVLG3 modem and will post that when I can. I'll work on two versions, one full and one with the RILs stripped.
I'll try to get that done today as well, but work comes first, so please, no ETA questions.
Disclaimer: I, or any other member of XDA, am not responsible if you brick your device. Attempt at your own risk.
I uploaded to my dropbox, mediafire may be added later.
You will need to unzip and then place the nandroid zip in your backup folder

Yes, should be able to use same rooting process as before. I used OTA Rootkeeper (available in Play store) to temp unroot before flashing stock recovery and downloading the OTA. Once installed, I restored root.

For the Nandroid backup, just copy the unzipped folder to clockworkmod/backup. Then go into cwr and restore through the backup and restore menu.
You might be able to temp unroot with OTA Rootkeeper before doing this, I don't know for sure. I did this to get the OTA, not using a nand backup. But I would think it should work the same.
If you go that route I would play with Rootkeeper a bit to make sure it works for you, before trying it with the nand.
Otherwise, just flash the nand and reroot the normal way. Might be more time consuming, but go the safe route if you're not sure.
Remember, it's your device and money, so choose the path best for your investment and peace of mind.

I agree. I was scratching my head on that one as well. I did a factory reset and wiped my phone before doing the nandroid, so I don't think any of my personal files should be in it. I even had to set up my phone again and download all my apps again after, so not really sure why it's so large.

UPDATE
Everyone,
The nand that I updated somehow corrupted, probably between the partial upload at home and then at work. If you have already downloaded, go ahead and delete it. I am uploading a new one right now before I leave work. Should be done within the hour, as long as my upload speeds keep up.
Again, the file is corrupted (which explains the size not being correct), delete if you have downloaded.
I have updated the OP and removed the link, will repost once ready.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

For some reason the nandroid backup I made of the stock ROM before I flashed cognition has been corrupted. After installations and reboot it stays on att world phone screen. I would like to have a backup of the stock ROM so where can I download it? I don't have access to a computer therefore I can't use Odin. Am I screwed?

Actually the cognition download website has a JH7 OTA stock download link, I would give you the link but I can't post links yet because the system won't let me (in case of spamming). So I think you should be good! Although I dunno how you're going to get it onto your SD card, but I suck at understanding these things, someone else can probably tell you.

How'd you do that if you couldn't get past the at&t bootup screen? Not doubting you, just curious.
Also, just so I know for my own personal knowledge, how DOES this work? Having a clean backup available on my phone may come in handy, and I definitely have the space for it on my SD card. If I download it on the browser, and it's on my SD card somewhere (wherever is the default download location), how do I add it to clockwork? If I go into ROM Manager I can see that I can click on install rom from sd card --> click the downloads file --> and then I suppose ROM manager would detect the JH7 rom (right?) but if I just downloaded it from the link and had it sitting on my sd card, it WOULDN'T be on clockwork's list if I went into recovery mode, would it? If not is there a way to easily do this right on my phone?
Sorry I know this is pretty basic stuff for most of the people on this forum but like I said before I'm not tech savvy. I just love gadgets This would give me piece of mind too, because I'm getting close to flashing cognition, which will be my first time (and perhaps only time, unless it gets crazy better after the source code for froyo on captivate comes out) flashing a new ROM.
This is a really old post, but i think it has a lot of what you need to know.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744042&highlight=clockworkmod
Well see I was sill able to get in recovery mode, but if I didn't go into recovery mode it would stay on the at t boot screen. So no mater how many times I tried to restore it, it would always remain on the boot screen unless I went into recovery. So I flashed cognition from clockwork and downloaded it that way. For some reason none of my nandroid backups ever work. They always install but won't boot. Because of this I just created a folder with all the roms that I have in their .zip form. So if I ever want to flash a different rom I just go to clockwork recovery and instal from the sd. No backups.

Does anyone have a backup of 6.893?
Typically I am very diligent, but somehow I forgot to make a backup of stock.
I have not switched to any other update. I have read through everything thoroughly and I apologize for failing to follow instructions. With 5 android devices and multiple flashes I have never missed this before. And I realized it as soon as I flashed TH3ORYS rom
From what I gather the easiest and most effective way to get back on track is to flash a stock 6.893 rom make a backup and move on from there.
I appreciate anyone's help!
I am also open to using this thread or creating one in delopment to post the stock roms of every version.

Not entirely true. His system will be back to 5.5.886, but his kernel/radio will be his previously upgraded 5.6.893. He is off the upgrade path until he gets the matching system file of 5.6.893. Only then can he continue updating. I just went through this exact thing, used the one step recovery, but went back to .886 and had to beg to find someone to send me a CWR back up of their 5.6.893, which got me back on track.
Oh yeah...nevermind. I completely thought you were wanting stock not the ota. That's what I get for speed reading.

Giving someone a backup made on your device or restoring a backup made on someone else's device is an extremely foolhardy proposition. You are cloning the Android_id from one device to the other, which means that apps that use it as an identifier will push and pull data from both devices without any intervention from the unknowingly affected user.

correct me if im wrong but, all we need is the system img right because im stuck with a hybrid
Does anyone know if restoring my 5.893 back up will work, or create a hybrid? I ask because I think it is the same radios?

Check your pms and please don't share in case there is some of my data still left in the backup. just download all the files and put them in a folder and put in your clockwork backup folder on your sd/ext, probably the best way is to restore with advanced restore and just restore system only.

I have really been through the ringer today. I started off this morning by noticing that I had no data at all. I was on 6.893 and TH3ORYROM 2.1 and have been for a few days with no trouble until today when I lost data. I tried everything to get it back, but nothing. I called VZW to make sure there wasn't a network problem in my area and they suggested that I try everything that I had already done (bat. pull, sim card re-register, turn off LTE radio, etc). When they couldn't fix anything, they wanted to transfer me to tier 2 tech support, but they apparently need to talk to me on a different phone so they can diagnose this one, but I didn't have access to another phone. So I decided I would try to flash one of the updates hoping it would reflash the radio file and wake it up. When I got home, I used the R3L3AS3DRoot to restore to stock and tried to install 7.893, but the update failed. I searched around and tried every method I could to get any of the updates to install, but nothing worked, still no 3g either. Eventually, in my desperate attempt to fix this myself I decided to wipe everything and start over. I wiped the webtop partition. I think that's what really screwed me up, because nothing else I did was any different that what I've done in the past. After wiping everything, I went back to the R3L3AS3DRoot and tried to run it. No matter which option I selected, it seemed to run fine, but I couldn't boot past the fastboot screen. I tried to fxz using RSD Lite, but every flash I tried failed. Then, in a panic, I came across P3's moto-fastboot method used to "get you back on the update path". I ran that and it freaking worked!! Then I figured I'd try to get up to 7.893, but I've tried absolutely everything I can find mention of and nothing works. Every install fails. I am getting some intermittent 3G now though. And to top it all off, I discovered that none of the nandroid backups I've made will restore and most of them don't even exist. I just discovered that I needed to check "use external storage" for the backups to take. I thought I had been covering my ass by making backups, but they weren't valid. Currently I have stock, rooted phone with an intermittent 3G signal. System Version 5.5.886, baseband CDMA_N_03.1C.57RLTEDC_U_05.15.02, kernel [email protected] #1, and build number 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. As I sit now, my plan is to see how it acts tomorrow and if I still have a lot of trouble with data, I will return it to stock unrooted and take it into a Verizon store and see if they will let me try a new SIM card. I don't really know what else to do at this point.
keep in mind before anyone updates to the official jb. i suspect the official release will be patched to not allow us to return to ics. if you keep root after the update good but if you some how break root there might no be a way to get it back as of now! so be cautious before you accept update. we should at least wait for an official jb fxz if you plan on keepng root this way if you mess something up at least you will have a working phone back without root of course. again i dont know they will patch the official release to prevent downgrade but lets find out for sure to be on the safe side. i dont think were gonna get dan to make us a jb root method right away soon.....
It could be considering its small size. Those who have updated to JB OTA should install safestrap and make a backup.

That's not the official one... A leak update for a leak update is not the official OTA. The official package (if for some reason it is 98.4.20) will be the size of at least the 2 leak update.zips together. It is not a 10 MB change from ICS to JB. It's a 10 MB change from JB leak to JB leak.

Just to clarify for Pete.
We don't want your information stored on your phone.
1) Restore back to ICS using the "restore function" in SS3/TWRP
2) Do a Factory Data Reset in settings.... privacy..... Factory Data Reset (this will wipe all personal info from the phone).
3) After you've done a Factory Data Reset, do a backup in SS3/TWRP.
4) Zip up the folder that has the backup you just performed, and upload it to a file server somewhere.
5) Post the link in this thread.

Doing a Nandroid backup should take away root as long as you don't install it through TWRP or CWM (they have an option when you go to reboot and it gets in the way)

Ok cool. Appreciate that. So how do I go about not installing through Cwm or twrp. Is that as described in the earlier posts? Also it mentions the lost apps package can you shed light on this for me too? All help appreciated greatly.
1.4 gigs downloading now. will post bloat list after update
Heard all of the plaudits of this update but what is the downside (S4)?

Downloading now, huge 1.4GB update. Will try to grab the OTA .zip once it's done downloading.
Edit: here's the untouched OTA .cfg, you need to have a mostly stock /system and you'll lose root if you flash it

Some complaints about battery life on other carriers
Wow, that's all. Think you're downloading for S5 so may be difference for S4. Just remember a couple of months ago hearing that S4 users could lose some functionality.

Sorry, not sure about the S4 (this is the s5 forum). There are other complaints about lollipop in general, specifically: notification changes, sound changes and priority mode confusion, memory leaks, etc. I would check the s4 forums for s4 problems. It was released yesterday so there is probably some data from other users.

Gotcha. Yeah, being in the right forum would help. However, the issues you listed are some that I'd heard before. Not sure I want to update since I may be upgrading phone to S6.

Why are you asking about the S4 in the S5 section?
Read the whole thread & you'll see that it was a mistake.

You'll 100% definitely lose root if you try and as of right now I'm not sure if there's a way of getting it back, I'm looking into that right now. Also your /system partition has to be mostly stock. So the update process will likely fail.
thanks for sharing the .cfg. I just tried to install in recovery mode (currently 4.4.2/NCE) and it gave me an error and "no command".
i renamed the file to update.zip and placed it on my external sd card

Thanks man, i don't mind losing the root, and i haven't change anything to be honest, i had to root due to a downgrade/upgrade i did, so i had to install safetrap and restore from the a safetrap backup, i'll make a backup of my system, and try see what happends, (when is done downloading)
I downloaded the update this morning, but after taking 2 hours to download (super slow WiFi), it said I needed another gig on my internal memory to install the update. Is there a way that I can move the OTA file to the external SD card and apply the update via recovery?
I am stock and unrooted.
Thanks!

Ditto here....I now have around 3GB free but just a little frustrating since it took what felt like years to download.
I decided to download the .cfg file from above, renamed it to .zip and used recovery to update my phone. I think it worked, but it wiped everything. I've updated this way before, but it never wiped my phone. Is there a reason that it did it this time?
Thanks!

Stock recovery just does that it's no big deal or anything
