I'm having an issue with my Nexus One, it doesn't seem to record audio when recording video through the Camera app, all I can hear is a little mechanical noise. The weird thing is, the camera records audio fine when I install another camera app such as UCam Ultra Camera... meaning it must be a software problem right? However, this problem started last week on my N1 with stock ROM (never rooted), and since I started having the problem I thought I would root and flash with CM7.2 but that didn't solve anything.
I hear the phone has 2 mics, one by the charging port and one on the back by the camera. The one on the back by the camera works fine when I use speaker phone or play music, and the one by the charging port works fine because I can make and hear calls. So the microphones seem to be fine to me, but the camera won't record audio!
Anyone have any ideas? Could UCam be using a different mic than the camera app leaving it still a hardware problem? I'm open to DIY, I would like to replace the mic on the back actually because I feel thats the problem, but I can't find one and don't know how to replace it, if anyone has any resources it would be appreciated.
I've searched around, there are many people with this problem, but no answers. Here are three threads that attempted to find solutions, I hope this will be more successful.

I have this problem too, but I have a Samsung Galaxy S3. I flashed a few roms, and somewhere along the line, my camera app has no audio and all I hear is some constant white noise in the background. Exactly as you describe. Other apps' audio and mics work fine. I can't find a solution.
Same issue here with the edition of the mic not working when in speaker phone mode.
I was rooted 4.1.2 tried unrooting relocking and flashing stock but no joy. I think this is a hardware issue

This is my first time asking a question on xda-developers so if this question has been answered in another forum, i'm sorry i didn't realize it.
This has been an issue for me since last year but i didn't mind at the time but now that this is 2013, I've had it.
Every time I record video using the Nexus One, there's this hissing noise like "BZZ,BZZ,BZZ..." in rapid succession and instead of sound coming from my surroundings, the hissing noise is there and I can't do anything about it. I did tests such as blowing my breath to the mic or tapping the phone and yet there's this noise that isn't what i recorded. Surprisingly, the mic works in almost EVERY application EXCEPT the camera app.
The Nexus One is rooted with Cyanogen7 running 7.2.0 and I think the problem is with the camera app.
I even tried going back to stock to see if that would work but it hasn't!
I was wondering if this has been confirmed with other phones or if there's a solution for this kind of problem.
Well a few weeks ago i sent my moto x to have its display changed as it had broken, and as soon as i got to try it after the repair the mic didnt seem to work at all, i by any case i were to scream close to the mic it would bearly catch some noise but it wouldnt for example be recognized by google search, but as i wasnt having any spare time i couldnt get it checked.
but today i recorded a video and surprisingly the mic got to record sound properly.
To sum up the mic only works when im recording, any other app wont recognize sound at all.
I hope somebody can help me...
Any help is apreciated!!!!!
Its because the camera app uses the rear microfone, the front mic its probably defective.
I'm running the latest version of SlimLP on 5.1.1. The issue also happens on stock firmware too. Here are the problems:
1. The speaker doesn't work, except extremely rare circumstances when I hear a notification, usually from FB Messenger.
2. The microphone doesn't pick my voice up during calls, forcing me to use an integrated mic on headphones or loudspeaker.
3. The earspeaker doesn't seem to work.
4. When I record video or something, the sound is picked up, so obviously the microphone is still functional.
I've used the Xperia diagnostics app, and the microphone isn't deemed functional on that, the ear speaker doesn't work at all, but the loudspeaker works perfectly fine. I really don't know what to do. I don't think this is a hardware issue with any of them except the earspeaker. Anyone know fixes? I've tried pressing down on the areas but that doesn't seem to have an effect.

I also had a similar issue on another Xperia and I simply changed my firmware. Most likely I must have downgraded it. However, there is an app called SOUND ABOUT
That should fix the sound problems. Quote back in case you expect a reply!

I've tried the app before, it didn't work, now it does! Thank God, I'm pretty damn happy about this. Bought the pro licence.
When I plug my headphones in however, sound keeps coming out the normal speaker, rather then the headphones. Hmm.

Trust me this is a pure software issue. I had such problems with my device once. Sometimes plugging in and plugging out head phones a few times fixes it as well.
Have you tried going back to stock ?

I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5 (G900A) where my video recordings are noisy.
Even in the quietest of conditions I hear this hissing sound in the background in my videos that I record using my phone camera.
I've searched the web and found out that I'm not the only one, but I can't seem to find any solution to it.
I've cleared the cache partition, the phone isn't wet...
Any suggestions? Such an expensive phone with such a big problem...
I want to try this hack to enable stereo sound on the phone but I am not sure if it's for the ATT version and if it'll work with the current ROM (stock, rooted Android 5.0.0 rom)... is there a similar thing available for my phone here? Or am I safe to try this hack?
Well, that hack works... I now have stereo sound (or something resembling it... now plays music through both speakers) but that didn't help with the camera thing...
I was kind of thinking that the hack had to do with microphones and not speakers... had to read more into it.... but the hack is still nice lol
I've read online of people fixing the issue by using a pin to clear the holes in the case where the microphone is... well I tried that (using the dull edge of a needle) and now the recording is much louder but the noise still exists (this hissing).
Hi Guys, so apparently in every aosp rom i use i have mic issues. When I´m on videocalls my mic is bad for other people and they can’t hear me well. Firstly why are Roms causing these issues and is there any way to fix. I tried all the modules for mic fix but nothing helped
Open camera, select video, stay with phone in orizzontal state (no vertical), rec a video for 10 or 12 secs, stop video and try
So I think mic in camera works im not sure because i switched to miui. But the only big problem is WhatsApp. In video calls friends etc. can’t hear me good
