I went to stock GB from an ICS ROM, and then to Helly Bean. Everything seems to work fine except any kind of networking. I cannot connect to 3G or AT&T's stuff (text messages, calls, etc.). I can connect to my wifi network and use it. In the Settings on my phone, Baseband Version and IMEI are unknown. The only thing in my efs folder in Lost and Found. I have no backups, as I wasn't aware that this problem existed.
Not sure what to do. Right now I'm leaving the SIM card and battery out for a few minutes, and then putting them back in to see if that helps. I'll probably flash a modem as well. Any suggestions? Any known fixes?
edit: Tried the battery removal and modem flashing, neither worked. Now going back to stock.
Edit2: going back to stock did nothing. I tried another SIM card, and that one also does not work.
I went back to stock GB again (third time now) and it's now recognizing my IMEI, but I still can't text or call.
Check your APN. And don't forget to backup that efs folder...just in case.

It's not letting me look at the APN settings because it still doesn't detect a SIM card, only my IMEI.
Anything under Baseband ?? If not try flashin a modem through Odin.

Okay, I was definitely having a legitimate problem earlier, before I flashed to stock. At some point in this repair process, my SIM card ended up in my phone upside-down.... woops.
Thanks for trying to help me 4-2ndtwin.
Ooops...sh** happens lol.
Glad u got it fixed !

This thread most likely has to answer.
Check your APNs to make sure they match your carrier's.
Check your IMEI to make sure it matches the one with your phone. If it's not the case, you'll need to go back to stock KK4, backup your efs folder with a app that has root rights (like ES File Explorer) and restart the falshing process.
A good backup would be suggested before going to stock!
same problem baseband is unknown and imei is null. help

So basically I have a phone (not mine) that says Baseband version: unknown, no IMEI when dialing *#06# and doesn't recognize SIM card at all.
Apparently the phone is running stock KK9 2.3.6. AFAIK it has not been rooted or had custom ROM's installed.
The owner said it recently started dropping from network, and usually didn't reconnect at all. This would indicate a broken baseband chip, since now it doesn't even recognize the card?
Any suggestions what to try?

Try Flashing Stock ROM, Follow link for instructions.

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately flashing did not help.
EFS corrupted? Any backup done?
No backup done.
you might wanna try this see if it helps... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021
Apparently there is a backup of the original EFS file - is it possible to just restore it?
do u meant the original files under /efs/? If that's what you meant, try to follow the steps in the previous SGS2 link. Else if it's an external EFS backup image, then there should be no problem restoring it ie. with EFSProBackup. good luck...
Now it's getting even stranger;
the phone works fine when the battery is removed for about half an hour and SIM card installed after that. I left the phone on my desk without the battery for the night, and now it works just fine. But I know that when I reboot it, it loses the baseband once again.
You mentioned you've flashed a stock rom before, which method did you use, pc odin or cwm/mobile odin? did u do a full wipe?
After restoring ur EFS, do a nand backup if you need to then wipe data/dalvik/cache from recovery mode and reflash via pc odin with a stock rom in ur region...
It look like to me you are having hardware problem. Send it back for replace or repairing..

Like the Title says, today I've flashed Team Nix [rc5] and the phone boot without signal, and never come back, I've tried flashing AOKP build 35 (previous one), and the problem persists.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S i9000T.
Please HELP!..
Thanks
Could your problem be similar as for the i9000m?
To use any i9000 ics rom, I have to use a cm7-kg3 modem and not the one that comes with a particular custom rom.
Perhaps for the i9000t, it's the same situation?
Check the modem. Post what version you have.

Do u ve ur imei or is it changed ??? Dial *#06# in dialer and do check... if its the developer imei then u need to flash back gingerbread to get ur imei bavk...
If u ve a backup of ur efs folder even that does the job...
Hi All, thanks for the replies.
I've found the problem, but not the solution. I have a generic IMEI on my phone that doesn't match with the one in the phone sticker.
I don't have a backup of the efs folder. I've tried several Guides, including
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021&page=2
and the IMEI is not changing.
Is there any other way to solve this problem?

ICSSGS roms used to copy EFS folder to the internal SD card might be worth having a look there
If EFS folder is not in the SD card Flashing back to Gingerbread ROM may recover your IMEI if you have not already killed it by trying the fix in the link that you posted.
SOmetimes, EFS is backed up automatically (sometimes!).. Anyhow, one method that worked for many people is by reverting back to GB using Odin.. Hope that helps you. And as mentioned in a previous post, try to look for an EFS folder in your SD Card. Perhaps, that could help you restore your IMEI. Good luck! ^.~
Thanks, That was the case, I had a backup in the sd at Trash1000/files..
Thanks!!!.. The phone is back!
I have an unlocked Captivate SGH-i897 running Jelly Bean (Slim Bean). I am trying to use it with a T-Mobile Sim card. I cannot connect to data in any form (wifi is fine), texts come in and go out but take a very long time (about an hour), and calls do not work (with the exception of one time one went through), saying "Mobile Network Not Available." I never appear to have any bars even though I am in a major city (Boston).
Data and data roaming are enabled. Airplane mode is not on. I have removed the battery and reseated the Sim card. I have tried every APN under the sun and soft reseted.
I have read about other people experiencing the same problem on these forums and elsewhere, but I have yet to find a solution that meets my needs. Thank you for your time.

you probably have the same error as me, you might have forgotten to backup your eff folder, return to stock, bacuk those folders, flash again slim bean and then push the folder files, that way you will repair the network

As stated above your efs folder could have been deleted in the flash which is common. Easiest way to figure out if its gone is to check your imei in settings to the one under your battery. If they match you're good. If they dont you'll have to restore your efs folder. If you didn't back it up manually you'll probably have to flash back to stock. But before you go through that check your internal SD card for a folder simply labeled backup. If you have that folder look and see if you don't have a copy of your efs in it. Some ROMs actually create a backup during the flash.
If your efs is intact and you're imei matches then the only other thing I can think of is to check to make sure you have a modem installed. Or look into flashing a different modem.

I'm having the same problem. I checked my "about phone", and I don't see the imei value. But it is on the root in efs. The value matches the one on the back of the phone, and so does the one in sdcard/backup/efs.
So, how would I getting a new radio/modem?

dial *#06# - it will show you your active IMEI.
- DC
Anyone get this working? I made two backups: 1 copying the files and the other with nitrality. Neither worked and I have not been able to access the mobile network with my I897.
I had the same issue (or similar).
In my case I was not able to hold signal for more than a few seconds on 850 MHz, which is the frequency of my main carrier, however, my secondary carrier which uses 1900 MHz band, worked flawlessly.
I fixed it by installing a different modem.
KC1 seems to work great.

Hello,
I've got a Galaxy Note, which a mate gave to me, because he has the new Note 2 now.
He said that he has some network problems (he has two times vodafone.cz), but didn't say anything in detail. So I thought the problem would be solved with flashing another rom, like CM 9.1. He already had the stock 4.0.4 and I read that I have to flash back to GB before flashing to CM 9.1.
At first I made a backup of the efs folder with kTool. After that I flashed the LC1 version of GB (3 parts, open Europe) but with this flashing process, I lost my IMEI ! So I wanted to restore the efs folder with kTool again, but it didn't work for me, I still had no IMEI.
I thought that the structure of the efs folder could have changed from 3.6 to 4.0.4 and that this would be the reason why I can't restore the efs folder. Therefore I flashed back to a Samsung stock rom of Android 4.0.4 (N7000XXLRG_N7000DBTLRG_DBT).
And then the surprise: I had my IMEI back, without restoring the efs folder!
This just was the background. Now to my problem: I still can't connect to the mobile network. In the notification bar is written "emergency calls only" (I don't know if it is translated on the right way, because I'm from germany). If I go to the network settings and search for mobile networks, I find all the networks I reach in my area, o2-de as well, which is my favourite network. But if I want to register to the network, it takes a while and then it says: Registration failed. And after that, I also can't make emergency calls, there is written "No service"
All in all my question is: Why am I able to find networks, but can't register to my one? I also tested it with other SIM-cards from other providers, but it still does not work..
I hope anyone of you has a solution for my issue.
greetings
Senfy
Edit: My IMEI begins with 359, so it should not be a developer IMEI
May be it has network lock. Have you tried apps like galaxy s unlock from the play store.
I tested it now, but everytime I want to unlock my phone, I loose my IMEI and I have to restore the efs folder..
But if I open Galaxsim Unlock, it says my device isn't locked.. so this seems to be not the solution..
Now I flashed to CM 9.1 with the hope to solve this problem.. CM 9.1 works, but I still can not register to my network... has anyone another idea how to solve this problem ??
Are you check an eyes in code or test menu ?
Go in dialer and tape
*#0011#
Then use menu and back in menu to come on general and check in different menu(debug)
I'm sorry I don't understand you. If I dial this code nothing happens. I also searched for this code (google) but without any result.
maybe you could post a link with an exact description how to do what you mean..
But thanks for your effort.
Now I wanted to flash another modem.. but everytime I want to flash it, I lose my IMEI !
The only way to get my IMEI back is to flash back to N7000XXLRG_N7000DBTLRG_DBT ...
I don't know what to do next.. I would be glad if someone could help me..
Edit: What I forgot to tell you: The reception of emergency calls goes up and down over the time.. maybe someone of you can conclude anything out of this information..
Doesn't anyone have an idea how to solve this problem?
how are you flashing the modem? tried mobile odin?
I flashed the whole GB (3 parts) with PC Odin and the actuall modem with mobile Odin but with no success..
Where is da solution 2 no network after update

Hi!
Resume:
My note has some weird problem with the modems. I'm getting "Unknown" baseband, modem verison, phone number, IMEI etc. with all the modems I tried except one, which shows the correct IMEI and modem version but still not working(I can even see the mobile networks with that one, but I it doesn't connect and gives me "Refresing SIM data" messages).

I always have been using custom roms(only TW) and updating my note to the latest version and I never had a problem.
One day, some months after the last rom update, started to lose the phone network conection and I was getting pop-ups with "Refreshing SIM data"(was very annoying because that was turning on the phone screen every few minutes). Sometimes I had phone network and sometimes I hadn't. The disconnections became more frequently. The phone also started to eat up the free space for apps, so I had to remove several apps to install or update even a small one.
So I decided to change to a different ROM to see if that fixes both problems, but I got the actual problem.
I was in AllianceRom v3 JB when that happened.
I flashed this AryaMod 5.5 JB following their instructions and I got this weird problem. In the "About phone" says that the Baseband version, IMEI, IMEI SV, Network and My phone number are "Unknown". I can't even search for mobile networks because it says "Insert SIM card" when I try to open the Mobile networks menu. Tehre are no signal bars, only a "denied" icon on the status bar.
I tested all JB modems and some from ICS from the "all modems" thread, but I was getting the same "Unknown" things in each one, except the XXLSO, where the Baseband version, IMEI and IMEI SV were okey. I could also find mobile networks with this modem, and the "Refreshing SIM data" thing returned, but it was not possible to connect to a network. With this one, there aresignal bars, but they are empty.
I flashed the AllianceRom and even the old ICS rom I had before, but the problem persisted, even with the modems they came with.
Now I'm on the latest Samsung rom(LT4), unmodified and flashed with odin and the problem persist.
I found this old thread. His initial problem is very similar to mine, but they don't know what caused it nor how to fix it.
I have also found something about corruped IMEIs that you can fix doing something with the ADB and restoring EFS folder, but I think that is not my case because I can see my original IMEI with the XXLSO modem (and I my EFS folder looks OK, anyway I have no backup of that).
I don't expect to get a step-by-step tutorial about how to fix this, but I hope somebody can put me in the right direction. I will post the solution if I find one!
What are the first 4 digits of your imei
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Thanks for reading, the four first digits are 3595.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but have you tried re-seating your Sim card, or even a different Sim?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I tried both. Also I have been using the SIM with another phone for weeks and works fine. Tried to take out the battery and wait few minutes and other "stupid" things like re-flash a ROM, re-wipe all, etc..
Maybe it's the programed obsolescence, you can use the Note as PDA but if you want a phone, go and buy another...

If it was a corrupted IMEI issue then it should not come back when the xxlso modem is flashed.. And also not sure why it goes to unknown when any other modem is used.. Could there be any physical damage to the sim tray? Dropped the phone?
I have no backup of efs... I had one "nandroid" but deleted it after everything was okey...
I could delete the efs folder, so this unknown problem will turn a known one :victory:
I dropped the phone a very few times, maybe in one of those something broke a little and has increased more with the usage? (the disconnections from the network became spontaneus and progressively).
I found this other thread, I could try the same but I can't find the original GB firmware, every link I find is in hotfile.
Check in Samsung-updates.com firmware section. There are 2 GB roms there..
I found a efs backup from may 2012, probably auto-created when first installed ICS.
I flashed the stock GB rom and restored it following this tutorial for my .tar.gz file, but didn't work, so the device may be lost. I only have 3 more backups: boot.img, data.ext4.tar and system.ext4.tar. I guess they are useless to fix this...
Thay you for you support!
