cannot mount read write - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i have been trying to mount the phone to read/write in order to access the /system folder for copying files
however, i am unable to do this
i have tried the mount r/w applications online but not working as well
i have tried all the commends on adb as well, what i get is "remount fail: read-only file system
i have used the abd to run super user, but it shows im already a super user
i have tried to set adb to set as root and it also shows already running as root.
any ideas guys??
i have tried reflashing several kernels and also roms, same thing.

oh additional note, i have tried adb in recovery mode and also in normal mode, doesnt work.
and my usb debugging is already checked

Very interesting development. Download Link please... :silly:
Despite that this surely the wrong thread you could tell us whether you have this problem on a toaster or a tumble dryer...
And what are you trying?
adb push iOS5.apk /system/s**t or what?

hi there, thank you for the really useless reply there. unfortunately you are right, i had put this in the wrong place. anyway, thanks to the admin for helping me move it to the right place.
in case you have been in a cave or dont have google, many people have issues trying to mount read/write capabilities in their /system folders be it to be able to move some things in there or to push applications.
as most people who ask questions here dont get much answers because of people like you, i had to do my own searching and try everything on the web and sadly it didnt work.
so, for people who have come to this thread looking for answers, please try the following (only if you have tried everything)
SOLUTION
it would seem that after flashing many roms, the /system folder has issues.
please go to recovery (CWM) > mounts and storage> format /system
once you have done this, please reinstall your rom. this will fix your issues.
as for trahzef*ck: i'll give u a thanks since you being a d*ck helped me figure out my solution and you look like you need a hand in being nice

Congrats! Obviously you have learned something. Learning by own research will help more than to be spooned.
To be honest: Maybe my answer was harsh. But be aware for the following:
- Post in the right section
- Give people, who want to help the needed information. Rom, Version, Kernel etc. So that they can help.
- and don't try to be so smart ass cause you found a format command. There are already enough on XDA.
As your thank meter is Zero I give u one back. for your most intelligent word/spelling creations. It's your first one. maybe the last.
Halleluja! An new &%/()&%%$ on XDA. Thank god.

Maybe you have partial root. Try Busybox from playstore and update the binaries.

haha well i dont care about hard answers, just answers, you on the other hand gave nothing. no wonder although your status shows "senior member" all you have is a measly 200 odd thanks. half of them must have been like mine, pity thanks for nothing.
i will however take your advice on the first two, but i dont have to be one because you apparently are one big enough to cover most of the members here.

erm nope, i checked with afew other guys, who root alot as well, apparently sometimes the /system file will get mucked up like that once in awhile. so this doesnt really apply to specific phones or tabs but to all who may have this issue.
but the issue has been resolved. thanks for the suggestion tho...

What app do I use to make my phone act as a router and/or tether? I can't find Tether Wifi in the market... is there another app you recommend? I do not live in a 3g area... this would be only used at a beach house with no internet... I realize edge is slower but its better than nothing. Is this possible?

Any advice on pimping out the G1? I saw a video on youtube where the guys dialer was large rectangular buttons, maybe purple too... how do you get this? (better keyboard?) I've been looking at Teds Hero Theme, waiting on a version for Cyan 3.6.8.1. Do I need to delete open home after/before a theme, does not seem like it will be of any use after I do this hero theme from Ted, right?

-1-
What is the recovery.img file that is used in that manual, and do I need another one if I am using Cyanogens (v3.6.8.1) stable rom?
-2-
I saw at one point a thread that had the names of common items and what they meant but can't find it (ie, why I dont know why what a img file is or does). Can anyone shed some light on this, or know where that thread is?
-3-
The manual also made it seem like I needed to load a JF build. After my root I went straight to cyanogen. Does this matter? Did I lose something by not doing JF first? Is there a backup anywhere (other than the files I moved from my SD card to my computer before formatting it)?
-4-
Do I need to load any other cyanogen things on my phone? On his thread it lists things like Audio resources, pimped out recovery image, etc.
-5-
Finally, I need to partition my card to take advantage of apps2sd on his rom.... what is the best way to do this? I really need help on this one.
-6- (okay, so 5 was not final)
What are all the cool apps that come with this rom.... anywhere I can go to learn more about how to use them?

Its fine that you went straight to cyanogens rom. Its good to load cyanogens new recovery (1.4), its in the pimped out recovery and all instructions are in there. There are different ways to partition a sd card, the way I do mine is thru Ubuntu (tuturial is in my sig). Wifi tether for root users is what allows your phone to act as a router. Theres alot of cool apps, you just got to play with them to figure them out or narrow down what your trying to find out. And theres a search feature, use that or be flamed if you ask repeated questions.

Get cyan pimped out recovery. The instructions are fool proof how to dow it.
-2-

Look in the informative thread sticky in the dev subforum

No, it's cool that you went straight to cyan. See when that guide was written those were the most popular roms that's why they are there.
-4-
Do I need to load any other cyanogen things on my phone? On his thread it lists things like Audio resources, pimped out recovery image, etc.
I would load the Audio resources since those are your ringtones and notification tones. Though if you plan on making your own it isn't really necessary. As for the recovery image you should definitely download. The instructions are easy and simple so just read.

Always search first, and if you can't find it search again. Don't just search 1 subforum. Believe me the answers are out there.
Yeah, I promise I do search, but again I just kinda seem to go from one thing to another and then I realize there are several ways to do the same thing.
Regarding the partition, no offense taken... but I'm not comfortable enough with the process so thought I would try and get more guidance than what I can find in the several threads with different methods.

I see where you are coming from since I too am a noob. So I'm guessing you're rooted and have a custom rom installed already. Soo here is the guide I used to partition my SD card. It is a very, self-explanatory guide. I have no computer programming background and this guide made it seem easy to me. You're going to need cyan's pimped out recovery. Like I said just find that thread and it has the directions to install it. As for apps, I found what I thought was cool browsing the app forum here and on androidcommunity.com

Exactly that... its a backup of basically your entire phone from the point that you created the backup, if you happen to flash another ROM and you don't like it, or it breaks, you can hit the restore option and return to this moment in time for you phone.

bare with me ONE MORE Q RE: NANDROID
I have created a nandroid backup, copied the folder from my SD card to my computer for emergencies.
If I add a new ROM and wipe.... how would I restore my phone? The backup I created would be erased from the phone right? And the backup on my computer would be from another rom, does that matter (assuming no, but I dont know the first thing about how to restore my phone from doing a wipe).
Thank you all... incredible forum.

when you wipe everything on your sd remains only data from the phones internal is wiped, so as long as you didnt delete it from sd after backing up to computer your good. Also worse come to worse you can use a card reader to get it on there..
As far as your settings and stuff reseting, thats why some people get to lazy to wipe you can try my backuppro (i use this) or backup for root (dont know to much about) to back up your settings, bookmarks, sms, and contacts if youd like. Note though that your contacts and all that will come back after signing back into google, and your apps will also remain on the sd..
^ ahh... completely forgot that the SD card was left intact after a wipe. That makes perfect sense and thank you thank you. I have backup for root now but will go to the market and try your app. THank you!

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+delete+htclockscreen
I would mind a guide as well. Or at least a confirmation that what I find on google works in 2.1 roms...
edit: i mean the nexus style lockscreen
I would say dont mess with it. Sounds like you are not sure what ADB is and haven't really done your reading.
There are ways to backup files and restore files to change the lockscreen. Hell, there is a thread on page 1 or 2 that talks specifically about lockscreens.
Please do some reading, the info is right in front of you.
i looked on the wiki guide but it really isnt detailed. i have no problem learning how to do this and really would like to but the guide isnt specific

I agree, I am fairly new to the Android and I was able to get through the initial steps of rooting it and flashing it however, I want to know the details.
Do I need to reinstall my programs every time or is there provxml like Windows Mobile had?
I partitioned my SD Card because the option is there but what is it for? Why is there a need to adb push some items vs just copying data directory on the card from the usb connection.
Why can't I get Live Wallpapers to work even when I disable Sense UI via home switcher?
The Wiki is great for some of the how's but I am missing some of the why's. And where I can go. Then if you go to a thread, the people on the thread are usually pass the point I wanna know and refer to it in passing.
Sorry OP, I don't have an answer to your question, but just many questions of my own. Now, I admit I could have missed the information somewhere on here but usually that kind of thing is sticked but this forum chooses not to use Stickies.
Thanks for any help you've got.
Not sure what to tell you. The information is here for you to read. There are a ton of devs on this board that are doing a ton of stuff most of us dont know. This is a development forum, meaning they are de-compiling tweaking and recompiling. What you are looking for is a 101 class but these discussions are mostly 501 material.
Android is based on Linux. If you know that you have a leg up.
If you find a guide that teaches how to understand this stuff, please share it with all of us. Most of what these guys are doing is from lots and lots of experience and lots and lots of trail and error.
Hell, there are people that have gone to the lengths to write countless guides on rooting, pushing and pulling files, hell there is even a guide on how to compile your own ROM.
The information is there. Lots of it I don't understand either, so I sit back and try to answer what I can answer, most of which is just posting an answer someone else posted and I read because I have read a LOT!!!.

You will have a very hard time getting answers to any "why" type question when dealing with programming. Most of the time I get from my devs is "why not" or "cause that's what I felt like that day"

There is a guides stickie, a rom stickie. Not sure what else you are looking for.
My advice, if you do not know what you are doing, dont do it. Dont flash a radio unless you know what that will do. Keep reading until you understand what you are about to do.
i tryed using root explorer app and hold then delete but it says it is a read only file and can not be deleted?
I agree with a lot of the posts I have seen so far regarding the information existing and having to spend the time to find it. It was a bear for me to figure out how to sign zip files so that i could customize ROMs, but after spending nearly 6 hours going from one site to another and one thread to another, I finally pieced it together and can sign zips. In the meantime, i also learned a lot of other things too because as someone else mentioned here, a lot of times a thread is full of stuff, but only references something that they might be interested in at that particular moment.
Unfortunately, this is an advanced forum and lots of the people on here have taken the time to learn things by just "putting in the time"... You need to do the same thing and use search 5 ways from sunday to find what you want... if 10 pages into a 50 page thread you haven't found what you want, you still need to finish the last 40 pages, click all the links in the threads and make sure you've searched things in that thread that you can't find after finishing it... then you do it all over again on another thread.
Guides are nice, but if everyone spent time making guides, development of ROMs etc. would suffer as this is not easy stuff until you figure it out and make it work and there is no truly easy way to make a guide that is multi-faceted.
Maybe if you learn things on your own, you can piece together all the different places you found the pieces you needed to do what you wanted and create the guide...
R
Thank you

Now if its title implicates its meaning, I think it might be answer to the question up above, but I haven't been able to find an explanation of what it is. Maybe that's my impatience. I did look in the guides on the WIKI and although there is an explanation about how to switch an Apps2SD card, there is no explanation of what it is or how to use it.

Joker,
I'm willing to try to walk you through it step-by-step if you want me to. Are you running Windows? If so, have you downloaded Android SDK Windows? Once you've downloaded that, put it in the C:\ directory of your hard drive and let me know. I'll try to make this in plain English. I'm rather new to Android myself, but this is a rather simple task if you have someone willing to explain it to you. I'll give it a shot.
Please connect your phone and select the HTC Sync option. I forgot to mention in the previous post that you should have the most recent HTC driver installed on your computer. If you have HTC Sync installed, you should have the driver too. When you connect your phone and select HTC Sync, it will search for Sync but not find it. This is ok, just acknowledge the prompt on your phone.
Next, open the Command Prompt. One way to do this is to go to the Start Menu ---> Run and type: cmd
This should open the Command Prompt in a new window. Next type each of the following lines into the Command Prompt and press Enter at the end of each line.
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app/
rm HtcLockScreen*
exit
adb reboot
Once you press enter after the reboot, your phone should reboot with the Android 2.1 lockscreen. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to ask. I'll try to check back and answer whatever I can. Good luck.

not to highjack the thread, but whats it mean when recovery starts prompting you to exctecute command via adb/sdk? i noticedbmy bluecarebear is TRUELY angry with me, so much hes not wiping my ext or dalvk!
nandroid works, backup and restore
factory data reset works
but wiping doesnt.
help?
Well using the xda search "ADB" the first result is a thread that leads you to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
How is that difficult? Everything you need to know about the ADB et al is there
As far as the sdk is concerned, your hero is rooted so it is on your pc already if you followed the traditional process. Otherwise it is there in the link as well.
Seriously I am not trying to be a smart ass but too many people give up before even trying.

if you dont use app2sd then ext means nothing, trying to wipe dalvik normally yells at you but it should be alright

I would try reflashing your recovery image.
I had trouble with the green one a while back, I changed images a couple times for other reasons. Back on green cb now with no problems since flashing over the problematic image.

im not up on most of the geek terminology or whatever it is, in other words the guide here wasnt helpful, but since im rooted, i guess i dont need it(sdk) or whatevr. i still cant figure out why i cant make any nandroid backups or restore currently stored ones
... I'm speechless, or I guess in this case typeless
*edit- +1 On what subliminalurge says in the next post. This stuff is not hard to learn. Either commit yourself to a couple weekends of focused enlightenment or make your peace with the stock setup. Almost any of us would be happy to help... after you take the first couple steps and learn some of the FUNDAMENTALS.
Go to the "GUIDE WIKI" and read read read, when you start becoming familiar with some of the "geek terminology" come back and we'll help connect some of the dots.

Also not trying to be a smartass, but come on dude. If you're not willing to hit google and learn a little bit, then you are probably already in over your head just with what you've done to your phone so far.
I STRONGLY recommend you find a way to be happy with stock phones. Otherwise, I see a large collection of very expensive paperweights in your future.

Search here on Hero CDMA development
and when ever a a post is a recovery, at the begining of the title it will say [RECOVERY]
or you can use the search button anytime. "Clockworkmod Recovery" or what have you. Youre recovery really shouldn go bad unless you did something stupid.
and 1 way to get a new Recovery is through Rom Manger but id highly suggest to use ABD/SDK. its not TOO hard to set up heres a link showing step by step instructions.
This site will probably half your answers that you might have already

edit: PM me if you need anything elso
What do you mean if something goes bad??? Care to give a little more details???
#Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
key word is "noob", lol,,,in case i screw something up, and yes i have been known to do that from time to time. sorry for the lack of detail. thanks
Well you still didn't state if your problem was still an issue. Or if the information that coffeehandle has been kind enough to provide you with resolved you issue.
#Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
stepped away for a moment
got called away for work, thats why i didnt respond with a speedy reply...yes his information was helpful, it did resolve my issue, and i did hit the thanks button.....a little more information and i probably would have given a generous donation as well...(gave 10 bucks to someone once for writing "wipe cashe, wipe data, wipe dalvik, flash away").....so i think all have completed their missions on this thread, dont you ?
Btw laie , if your not responding with helpful info,,,why are you responding??? just curious
Glad you got it worked out. Have a good one.

Because its respectful to let the board know in general that you've figured it out. By telling us that, it lets others know maybe how to fix the same type of problem instead of leaving the thread in limbo. Simply edit your original post and put [solved] in the header also works and is very easy. Some xda users only use the app like myself and don't see the thanks. Plus it doesn't say that it worked for you. Just that you thanked him for a reply to your problem or whatever we could assume. And we all know what assume means. Makes an ASS out of U and ME.

Its all good man. Just things like this will help noobs and the easier it is for them to find info the less we senior members have to post that's all.

[Q] Force USB Debugging

Hello all,
First of all I appreciate there are loads of threads of possible not genuine reasons i.e. stolen phones and so forth. However I do have a good reason and would be happy to discuss the reasons via PM only.
I need to bypass a "pattern too many times" issue - I was looking to talk to the handset via ADB but USB Debugging is not active. Can this be forced?
I am yet to try the bug with "username email" with password "null".
Equally if you know the answer but want to keep it off the boards - again PM me.

I do not fully understand your explanation, anyhow what I get is that you want to have USB Debugging enabled by default after a reboot.
If my assumption is correct, you just need to edit your build.prop in the /system directory by changing the the specific parameter "persist.service.usb.setting=1" instead of "0".
Anyhow such thing need to be rather posted into the Questions and answer part of the forum.
The handset is locked out due to a pattern being used too many times incorrectly.
I need to remove the pattern and google access without losing data. I understand the best way is to talk to the handset over ADB but USB Debugging is not active so I wanted to know if there was a way of forcing the handset.
The reason I said to PM is that I know some people wont help as they thing that the poster does not have the correct intensions. I however have.
Re-reading your post - to edit the build.prop I assume can only be done if the handset is rooted?

yes, you're right. This only possible at rooted devices since the /system is r/o by default and it needs to be mount r/w for this change. Anyhow you need the access to /system either by terminal or by root explorer.

With a custom Kernel you can enter in CWM (clockwork mod). CWM has ADB access. Simple.

As I said, I have not catched completely the aim of his question.
Anyhow, there is no more feedback and either it is enough or otherwise will start again questioning ...
I have a SGS which has been blocked with "Pattern been entered too many times" and therefore its asking for GMail details which are not known. So I was going down the route of trying to activate ADB so I can extract the data stored on the device first - I can not wipe the user data. I am trying to do this in a forensic manner guys. Sorry I kept that detail to myself - I must stress this phone is not stolen.
I am a forensic analyst and this is a wee bit beyond our usual remit.
If you are what you claim to be then, what you seek to do should be child's play to you, you should also have a high enough IQ to realise this sort of thing goes in Q&A not Dev.
The needed solution has already been given to you.
To be quite honest anyone can claim its for legit reasons, dont mean a thing really does it.
If it is for legit reasons then get hold of the OWNER and get them to unlock it!

That my friend was the reason I didnt want to say what I am trying to do. There is no need for your rudeness on the matter. This was a question for developers as ADB is usually used in developing is it not?
Having an high IQ means nothing - I was asking the developing community for help not to do my job for me.
The OWNER is the one in question therefore is not going to give me the bloody answer.
So thank you for your objection.

As you see, this has moved to Q&A as it has nothing to do with development and is a question needing an answer.
To show no offence was meant.
Flash a custom kernel, one with clockwork mod included, you can then get full access to all files on the device, either via adb or doing a nandroid backup and then pulling the files to a PC for you to do as you wish with.
