I bought an 8 GB and u know what? Its perfect! I have tons of apps installed and some videos and still have 3.5 gigs left. All of my music is either in the cloud or on my sd card. With USB otg I can watch all of my HD movies and listen to my 7 gigs of music. I dont regret not getting a 16 gig at all. I used the 50 I saved to buy a bunch of accessories. U really don't need 16 gigs. Save 50 bucks.

Did you have to root to enable USB-otg or can that be enabled with the standard offering?
I don't think 8GB is enougth even for a phone... I have the 16GB version just because it's the top of todays models, but I don't think 16GB is a good storage space for a tablet. OTG isn't the same thing of having larger internal memory.

Its personal preference, I don't always have a wifi connection, I like loading up tons of roms and trying them out, I enjoy backing up my device, I enjoy having the extra space and dont really want an ugly cord and usb stick hanging from my tablet.
I'm glad you enjoy 8gb version, but its not for everyone.

For me, OTG worked out of the box for pen drives and even for the Xbox joypad. I tested without even rooting the device and it works. It's a good alternative to have...
You don't just get more space with the 16GB, I think I heard the drive access speeds are even faster due to a different chip in use, but I could be wrong.
Install a few gameloft games then come back and tell me 8 GB is enough.

My 10.1" tablet has 80gb total storage, and it's full. I'm constantly rotating things in and out of the memory card. I leave the 16gb internal for apps and downloads and it's always within a gig or so of being full.
My Nexus 7 is not my main tablet. With 16gb and the fact wifi is not everywhere, it can't be.
The 8gb is more then sufficient for usage for normal use. But once you start throwing PlayStation roms and Nandroids, it might be limiting.
No big deal and there is always OTG and cloud storage. I stopped keeping music with me with Pandora and other streaming music apps. As long as you don't do anything crazy, the 8gb will work just fine.
Me personally, I'd rather just spend the cash just so I don't have to worry about it.

Put the dark knight rises and spiderman on an 8 g model and then your done. That's 4 gig out of 6 that's left after system files.
16 gig is well worth the $50. I have one nandroid backup, the first FF9 disk and tons of PDF 's and epubs and I'm at around 8 gig used.

All depends on your needs. I've loaded 10 Gig of training videos local on my device to watch while I'm a passenger in a car, or if I take a trip.
Glad it worked for you though!
I bought an 8 GB for my 6 year old son to upgrade from a crappy Chinese android tablet. How ever it works out we will just deal with the 8gb internal memory.
I do also realize some of the games will really eat up some space. Question is can these games be run of a OTG flash drive? Can they be moved over to it and it work ok.
Cool thing is I have the tablet connected to a share on my nas which has lots of his movies and that work well. That old tablet could never do this. There were so many apps that were not compatible.

My six year old has an A200. She uses it a lot and has started asking me about using the OS in more detail. More than just an expensive game machine. And I let my four year old use my KF since I got the N7, but he still prefers my old gen 1 iPod Touch that he has been using since he turned 3. He plugs it in and keeps it charged up and everything. You'd be surprised how responsible they can be when they know it is a privilege.
It's 50 bucks more for storage and a lot less headaches, it's worth it to me.
For some of us that prefer to buy these at retail stores so as to not deal with the headache of going to Google to return defective Nexus 7's, it's not really a choice. I'd gladly pay the extra $50 for the opportunity to exchange in person as needed, and I did already have to do so.
Actually its only like 20 bucks more because apparently the 16GB has no tax or shipping charges. I wish i bought the 16GB model, 1 HD game and a nandroid backup, and the device feels full
Really wish I had the 16GB model. No wifi in the car so i can only hold a little music at a time on the tablet :/

I'm poised to order my Nexus 7, but I'm torn on which to get. Anyone out there running out of space on the 8GB? with all the cloud stuff, is there a need for the extra 8GB? How much space is left for files on the 8GB version? is the extra 8GB worth $50?
5.91GB total space on my 8gb.
I'll personally just be using OTG.
I would suggest getting it if you can afford it.
90% of the time, I use it at home; but if I'm going on a plane, or the subway, or any kind of trip where I can't count on a strong WiFi or tetherable cellular signal, I don't also want to be forced to deal with size limitations that I could have very well avoided.
The way I looked at it was play store is $213 shipped for 8gb. Other retailers have the 16gb for $249 and free shipping so in essence its $36 more vs $50. That $14 saved can go towards accessories.

wtf 3 gigs... Nova 3 takes up 1.7gigs.
I could survive with 8GB as I don't store anything locally like music or movies.
Depends if you are a big gamer, I got the 16 gig it was about 270 out the door at Sam's club so 213 from the play store sounds like a good deal. I live in California though so I would have had to pay sales tax so an 8 gb would have been like 230 for me from the play store.

If you intend to play movies/TV shows/videos on the thing without wifi our tethering (personally I'd never tether for video playback but whatever) then in my opinion 16 is a must. HD movies rented from Google play look amazing on this thing and will suck up about 1.8 gigs for a 2 hour movie. I can totally see myself loading a few high definition movies and watching them on a long flight without the need to transfer files via otg cable or wireless transfer.

I preordered the 8 gig and have second guessed myself the last few weeks. I decided today to refuse my 8 gig shipment and bought a 16 gig in store. I figure I may swell save $20 on shipping and use it towards the upgrade. I don't regret it at all. Especially since Google screwed up the shipping.

I weighed the pros and cons but in the end decided that having more space than I needed was better than not having enough.
If you can afford the extra 50 bucks, the 16g is a no-brainer. If you can't then should you really be spending $225(shipped) on a toy to begin with? Probably not

Down 4GB of space and I haven't even finished downloading all my games yet... For me the 16 GB was a no brainer - nothing worse then having to pick and choose what you can take with you. On the other hand, if I buy one for my parents I'll probably go with the 8GB model.
i would just...
1. Root
2. Download stickmount (free)
3. Buy an OTG adapter
Then download 30-50 movies onto a thumb drive, my whole music collection on another thumb drive.
Then plugin whatever one i wanted to use. No need to transfer files.. its like an external drive i can view or listen from.. even if no wifi is around..
I don't think alot of people understand what an OTG cable is here or something..

I know what OTG is and does the point is that is external

Nope, I do not argue for an SDSlot. I do want 32gb though. Cloud is slow. Plus it uses more battery and requires a decent monthly data cap which many people do not have access to.
I love local storage, just as many other consumers do.. They should've offered 16GB & 32GB initially and offer a pre-order for a 64GB version if enough people signed up.. All priced accordingly. I'll pay for it if they make it, just as many others would. I mean I could always keep my S3 WITH LTE, Micro SD (80gigs total now), and a removable battery... Nexus customers know what they want. They choose a Nexus device for a reason.. Otherwise they could be one of the mindless sheep throwing $$$ at Apple.

Here is what i came up with, for music use google music they are allowing to upload 20,000 songs. For picture and doc etc use dropbox or drive. And for movies transfer the movie to phone and once you done watching it delete it and transfer another one lol. I know its cheap why to live a life
I just bought a 64GB memory card a week ago
I have 20 gb of music on google music. 5 gb of google drive space for docs and books. 5 gb dropbox, 5 gb sugarsync and 5 gb ubuntu one for other files. and a 64 gb usb-otg for video. With that i think i am pretty good. I think i'll be buying the 8gb version and saving some money since tmo looks like they will be selling the 16 gb version for a msrp of $599.99. I wont be gouged $60 in tax. Thats bull****!
I also have a nexus 7 which the usb-otg is/was for and that goes with me everywhere.
They can give us whatever amount of Drive storage they want, it would be as useful as giving somebody replacement pistons for their new car.
The Drive mobile app is so uncapable of even doing the most basic tasks, that it is comepletely useless. You can't even move files to the location you want, cant add pictures to your gallery, can only download one file at a time, and only access them from the drive app.. Imagine looking at an album and having to go back each time after you viewed a picture, to download and view the next... The same with music, have fun opening each song on its own, and not being able to copy them to your music player.
Drive is just a pity.

Not when it's Tons of Music, and Nandroid backups. People with data caps can't really afford to stream when they're away from wifi. More storage in the form of ondoard flash or a micro sd slot is a must for MANY people, and will remain to be a deal breaker for alot of people. If Google wants to compete, they need to at least add 32GB and a 64GB while pricing them accordingly. Tons of people bought the Int. GNex 16GB for $500+... Do you really think they would pass on a 64GB Nexus 4 @ say $549 or $499???..

I'm getting the 8gb. I use Google they way they want me to: Google Music, Google Drive, stream movies and tv shows, and I'm not much of a phone gamer, so I only have about 300mb in apps. If I want to have music offline, I just choose my playlists for on device music in Google Play. Plus, I remove a bunch of useless system apps that frees up my device even more and the rom usually only totals out to be 150-200mb. If I want to save a couple movies on my phone, standard movies usually are about 300-700mb.
16 gig. 8 gig is too low for me. You will rely too much on mobile net and clouds if you will be getting 8 gig.
Why not 32 at the same price?
I don't understand why to do the 8GB..
Is useless..

I ordered an OTG multi card reader to dump off useless games and pictures , that way i can manage 16gb better
All my Samsungs have a MicroSD card that goes unused, and 16GB that sits a quarter full. 16GB is overkill. It's a phone FFS. I'm getting the 8GB because it's way more than enough.
8gb folks should rethink this. The Nexus 7 8gb was slower because it used cheaper slow memory. Apparently the Asus Vivo Windows RT tablet is slower than the surface too despite using the exact same internals and software.
That is Asus though. I don't think LG is as sketchy as Asus and Acer but just something to keep in mind.
16gb also ups your resale value quite a bit. So that in a year or two you decide that you really need LTE, you have a wider range of potential customers, customers that need 16gb.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6130/the-16gb-nexus-7-storage-performance
Realistically need 8gb, but will buy 16gb because I plan to use it for 2 years instead of 1 and take a lot more pictures and videos this time, since the phone is fast enough to do that.
I deleted quite a bit... and don't have many apps downloaded. It's possible to have the 8 GB if you're like me lol. Videos and pics of my 2.5 year old daughter plus ROM downloads/ nandroids make up the bulk of it.

No.. Get the 32gb.. If you're heavy into gaming the extra leg room will pay for itself. Some of these modern games have equal install bases to their PC counter parts.
Bards Tale = *3.5GB install
NSW MW = *640MB install
GTA III = *440MB install
*-Working from my memory. May not be 100% exact
So.. Roughly Just in 3 games you'll be below 10GB of available space just like that.
I think 32GB will be better, in Singapore 16 GB and 32 GB is only a $50 difference. More space wont hurt right ?

Depends.. if you're only going to have a few games and a few movies, and have no problems swapping the movies out with new ones once you're done watching them, you'll be fine.
I have the 16Gb version, and currently have half of that free.
There are many cloud storage options available. Google drive, Dropbox and Skydrive gives you quite a bit of storage, 17gb between the three of them. I have the 32gb version and yes, it's nice having everything there for easy access, but I also have an 8gb Kindle Fire and can access what I need via cloud storage.

Likewise, but I don't use games. I read a lot of "big" PDF files.
Six months in and still >3GB of free space.
The original questioner has more space hungry needs. But to deal with things like videos I would probably report to attaching a USB stick.
You can always use a ext USB drive via a OTG adapter I'd needed

More memory = better prestations
If they'd have simply included a micro-SD slot, 16gb would be fine. 16gb (or, even 32gb) is not enough to make the N7 a full-fledged tablet. Mine's just a small secondary tablet to use when I don't feel like hauling my 10.1" 80gb rig around.
I have a 32GB model and it has more memory than I need (I don't play a lot of games or have humongous files).
You could make an argument for getting a used 16 GB Nexus 7, OTG cable, and USB stick, and then using the money you save to move up to an upgraded model later (when and if they come out).
Hi there,
I bought a 32 gigs one. Though im not an hardcore gamer or a media freak i wouldnt need this kind of space, but in my country only the 32 version is available. But yeah like several users said, you could always use cloud like apps but takes load of time to download, imagine you are not near a wifi hotspot? 3g wont handle a 1gb download as easy as the wifi does. So that extra space can come in handy. It really comes down to the kind of user you are.

While many in earlier posts think the automatic default response is NO, I will agree with those that have said: depends.
I do some gaming, I watch a TON of movies and TV series and I wish I could say that I have a life, but I can spend waaaaayyyy too much time surfing one topic to the next - a total info junky. Add to that lots of writing and document prep.
That said, my 16gb N7 is empty - almost nothing in it, My games take a little space, all movies/TV are via HBO Go and NetFlix, and browsing has no special storage requirements. All document work I do is done via multiple Cloud solutions.
I would not automatically assume that the OP will use his N7 just like me, but if he intends to, a 16gb will be far beyond his needs. On the flip side, some of the earlier posters in this thread *did* automatically assume that the OP will duplicate their usage patterns - this may not be a good assumption.
I'll stick with this position: "depends".
16GB is not enough believe me.

32 also, cuz Drop Box is my fav app lol and I also stream music. Plust if I download a movie or an episde of a tv show I delete after watching it.
I got 64 cuz backups are like 6 to 8 gigs each. I alway keep a backup of stock and then 1 or 2 custom roms. Those back ups add up.
128 because I wanted to watch everyone else get their phones first
I got the 32 because it was expensive enough and I use a plug usb to do everything else which is a 64GB so that makes up for less internal.
32 cuz I'm poor. Working on setting up wifi backup.
64. A crap ton of photos of the kids. Plus I take a ton anyway. So I need the space.

64GB, It's only been 4 days and I already used up half of it lol. ~10GB was for the system, the rest was me.
32 because I use Internet stuffs and am around wifi. Also have the USB OTG
64GB because the System itself already takes up 10GB. So getting a 32GB would only leave me around 20GB. I already came from a 32GB device that didn't have a SD card slot, and I was always low. So I had to step up. The 64GB version has 50GB free Out the box. That's sounds much better than 20GB.
64GB. I stream music and all of my pictures are on auto backup to the cloud, so I could've gotten by with 32GB. I just went with the 64GB so I don't need to worry about storage at all.

Just picked up my 32gb white s6 loving it so far
32
Yeah I got the 32gb I use google music and have all my photos
On google plus that has about 115gb on my drive so I think I'm safe
I love this phone BTW
I have 1tb on one drive xD
I love gaming and lossless music, so the 128GB option would restrict me the least. Totally would have spent another $100 for a 256GB model.
64gb. One drive and Google Drive.
