Okay so I cheaped out and bought a matte screen protector off ebay for 2 bucks for a 2 pack. Not surprisingly the screen protector itself feels very good to the touch, but it results in such a grainy image and just ruins it. I might just get a glossy screen protector instead from the same seller, those work just fine as I've been using one for my phone that works great. But I was just wondering if there are any cheap matte protectors that result in a good clear image that aren't too expensive. Or any glossy ones that aren't fingerprint magnets?

Not cheap, but the Steinheil SGP UF has zero impact on the image, to my eyes. Think Vizio 55" HD Television Screen: It's "Matte" but the image looks great (Or any "Matte" LCD Monitor for a computer, etc...).

Yea my SGP Steinheil UF matte looks great. I love it. No fingerprints or tacky gamer fingers or reflection glare.

is it this one? http://www.amazon.com/SPIGEN-SGP-Protector-Steinheil-Anti-Fingerprint/dp/B008RB15YY
I use the CrazyOnDigital matte and I think it looks really good for a matte protector.
I haven't compared SGP with BodyGuardz so I can't say which one is better, but I've written a review on the BG screen protector:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839108
See whichever one best suits you. They might just be the same in function and quality.
I just ordered the one linked above from amazon. I have never gotten an SGP product that I was dissatisfied with.
Trying to read on my nexus 7 with the backlight turned down is difficult due to glare from the shiny screen, so I hope this helps with that.

Regardless of which product you get, if its from a reputable company the screen protector will definitely improve your screen. Once i put mine on, I stated enjoying me device even more. It can be used comfortably in many situations.
I too can vouch for the SGP UF screen protector. Costed $30 but well worth it. The screen protector surface is a little "grainy" at first but after a few days it feels a lot smoother and no actually prefer the feel over the naked screen. The screen doesn't look grainy but there is a slight difference in how it looks.

matte screen protector looks grainy
when you attach the matte screen protector on your device screen ..it looks grainy but after some time it converted in to smoothly screen ..it will take time to become smoother.

I ordered clear amFilm screen protectors, but received anti-glare instead (by mistake). Very well priced, perfect fit, excellent quality, looks great when used outdoors and feels nice after a couple of days usage. However, the screen looks awful indoors, colors are too diffused and pixels look blurry.
Wouldn't recommend this product, unless you're short on budget.

totally agree with you. I took mine off because I didn't like the way it lessened the clarity indoors.
heh kinda sounds like the ebay one I bought. Oh well. $20 for a screen protector is way too steep for me. I bought a Zagg one for the HP touchpad for $15 last year and it really isn't all that great. It makes the screen feel worse and it's a dust and fingerprint magnet (moreso than the screen itself). Oddly enough the cheapo glossy ebay protector I bought for my phone is doing great for a dollar. I figure I would just get an ebay glossy one for the nexus 7 as well for cheap. Shame though, I really like the matte feel and look but cheapness has it's price.

I have seen lots of threads about the crystal clear screen protectors and what to get. But what about anti glare ones? I want one that hides finger prints well. Which one do people usually go for?
The one we got from our local Verizon store has been the best screen protector I have used. It hides glare along with fingerprints I believe the screen protector was the same one you can get from Verizon. I have used screen protectors for everything from Nintendo DS, Tmobile G1, T-mobile My Touch, Lowrance H20c GPS, Lowarance Endura GPS.
I just bought some cheap matte screen protectors off ebay and I am very unsatisfied. Makes everything appear blurry and seems to be more reflective than my clear ones.
So I am wondering this as well... I've had good experience with matte protectors in the past since they Ward off fingerprints but this one is unsatisfactory.

Fyi I think I figured out why matte screen protectors look so bad on our phones. I'm used to my iPod touch matte screen protector which doesn't blur the screen very much at all, but then I noticed the difference in HEIGHT from the screen to the top of the glass display. If you look you'll notice there's quite a considerable gap. My iPod touch has very little distance between the surface and the screen. Unfortunately, the more distance between the matte material and the subject (in this case our screen) the blurrier the subject will be when viewed through the matte material.
So in short, matte screen protectors dont play nice with our phones period. Its part of the design and nature of the beast. Your best better is to get one of the many crystal clear screen protectors. I heard good things about the seidio one so I ordered a package of two...

SGP Steinheil Anti Fingerprint is the best one I've found. It's not blurry but it does look a little grainy up close. IMO it's a worthwhile tradeoff for having an anti-glare matte finish and no fingerprint smudges.
yeah im with whipstitch on this i have the spg anti-fingerprint one and i like it a lot it makes moving my finger across my screen super easy and they have a nice feel to them and they aren't to blurry only if you hold it really close to your face but other wise its fine.
The Boxwave doesn't sacrifice any quality but is a bit on the pricy side. From what i've seen, its the best.
Blah you guys are making me think twice about these types! Ill have to order some and see what happens. I can always fall back on the seidio ones if I'm not happy I suppose.

I'm using SGP Crystal Clear, and I love it. It's extremely anti-fingerprint compared to the stock screen, in my opinion (although it may not be as anti-fingerprint as the "Anti-Fingerprint" model). I just didn't want to sacrifice any visual quality, and I'm happy with the protector I got.
SGP, hands down.
I'm using the screen protectors from verizon. For $15 you get a set of 3.
They are not matte, but I don't struggle with glare.
I've been using the same first protector for 5months.
The highest reason I recommend this screen protector is that it's smooth.
I use the swype keyboard and other screen protectors produce dragwhen I swype my finger.
I picked up a 3 pack of these:
http://www.handhelditems.com/samsun...atte-finishing-screen-protector-p-151910.html
So far it's really nice - easy to apply without bubbles, cut out for webcam/light sensor, and a nice anti-glare finish with a good texture to it.

Thanks for the link Dan. These look nice and good price too.
Do you notice if they add any delay or stutter to the touch sensitive actions (scrolling, typing, etc)?
It's been awhile since I've used a screen protector, but fingerprints just seem so much more visible on the Tab.

Great find man. Just ordered one myself.
most important info for me would be how "tacky" it feels. I just love the smooth gliding that occurs with the naked glass and have yet to find a screen protector even half as smooth. Who knows, maybe I just have spiderman hands.
Ordered one too. I hope they go on with static vs. wet....

Awesome find! A quick check on retailmenot.com found a coupon code galaxytab20 for 20% off these. Site says this code was supposed to have expired on 11/30, but I am still seeing the discount right now. They have a good deal on both the clear and matte, so picking up a 3 pack of each.
The coupon knocks off the shipping costs pretty much, bringing the total to just under $18. Not bad for six sheets, if you ask me. T-mo sells ONE for $15, haha.
My only problem is fingerprints.
Tell me, does any of these screen protectors really, really work?
I'm very skeptic.
Nice find on the coupon code stefvan2k1!
The feel on these is nice.. I feel that there's less drag with the slight texture on these than on the glass alone (maybe it's just my most hands )
There's definitely a reduction in finger prints with one of these on, I was wiping my screen constantly before and hardly do now.

Thank for the coupon code!
Holy ****, they want $20 to ship a 3-pack from California to Vancouver Canada via USPS. To put that in context, Phantomskinz charged me $2.75 to ship a similar sized full body appliqué from Phoenix. Or to further put it in perspective, Zenus charged me less to ship my Color Edge case, from freaking Korea.
They ain't getting my business, they're running the old "shipping charge for profit" scam.
i got 3 anti-glare and 3 clear from ebay for $7 shipped for each set

the anti-glare is ok but i've had a anti glare on my ipad since the beginning and the tab looks amazing with it being clear. Good thing to buy extra since it is annoying when dust or any thing get on the tab while installing and tape and patience isn't enough lol
alignment on the top and bottoms aren't perfect but if u eye it right you can give enough spacing on each side at least the corners are round and not jagged and with a gel case on the back that wraps to the front, it covers up the extra 2mm or less that the protector doesn't fully cover.
all in all for the price well worth it.
I would like to try these.... but I am picky about my protectors and cases... I assume they are decent? The low price scares me, hahaha.... so that being said, if I am going to order that case and screen protectors....
I might get something for my samsung focus off that site also? Any suggestions for the same combo but smaller?
The Galaxy Tab screen is Gorilla Glass, do you really need a screen protector? I imagine any force that would scratch or chip GG is going to tear a plastic screen protector.

Can't believe AT&T dares selling theirs at $29..........
Gorilla Glass can be scratched. Some people have attested to that. BEcause it isnt indestructable, I prefer to use a protector. I got an Amzer protector from Anazon that is truly anti glare and def leaves no prints... but I will admit I prefer the feel and clarity of glass
I got my Galaxy Tab with SGP Ultra Oleophobic Clear type screen protector.
I didn't go for those anti-glare/finger print MATTE type protector, because to me they actually degrading
the screen sharpness, brightness and also color quality, which also mean degrading your overall
viewing pleasure that not only on Galalxy Tab but also on any devices.
Tested matte protector before on my old cellphones in the past years, they only making me frustrate,
low on mood or feeling regrets whenever I used my cellphones to watch video, pictures and even on phone idling screen.
You know, just like the LED/LCD or Plasma TV nowaday they're all on glossy surface which reproduces great sharpness, color and brightness.
All in all glossy surface = Great screen/picture/video quality.
Fingerprint, oily screen? Not a problem to me. Just wipe it more often.
It is still much better than keep felling frustrate with low screen quality everytime.
Thanks for the link. Just got my galaxy tab today and already have lots of fingerprints and see glare as an issue. I also think the slightly textured, antiglare films are better to the touch but sometimes degrade the screens sharpness a bit. I think it's worth the tradeoff though.
Oh and the coupon code galaxytab20 also worked for me. I paid 13.94 for a 3 pack with 3-5 day shipping.
Hi,
So I purchased a set of dry application clear screen protectors for my Nexus 7 and have it installed pretty much perfectly. However, it's not totally transparent as there are like spots that show similar to the rainbow effect on many screen protectors (shown below). NVM, can't post pictures or links with under 10 posts.
I know SPG makes good screen protectors but I don't really want to shell out $20 for 2 screen protectors.
Can you guys recommend a cheap screen protector or seller, preferably under $3 (most likely from eBay) that doesn't have this problem? It just annoys me every time I see it...

Hi all,
I'm looking for a matte screen protector for the Nexus 7, but all the ones I find seem to be anti-glare, and people complain of weird rainbow colours and polarisation effects, like at a cashpoint screen. I don't need anti-glare, I just want it for the matte texture.
I'm just looking for a clear screen protector, with a matte surface, which doesn't produce any weird colours or ruin the screen.
Does such a thing exist?
This is what you looking for I guess: click

Out of curiosity, what does the screen protector do nowdays?
I've never used one, but from what I can see from using my usage of a borrowed ipad, it seriously degrades display quality, much more than a small scratch would do. And it obviously does not help with falls and such. So, why should I use it?
Simple... Protection. Also texture. Fingerprint resistance.
A quality screen protector won't degrade visual quality and should go unnoticed. I recommend Spigen brand Matte SP. They go for about $24.
A Matte WILL still always have a slight visual effect simply because of the way it is designed. I prefer my Matte SP to my naked N7. A higher quality SP won't be as noticeable as the cheaper ones. Also the Spigen SGP brand is also THICKER so it goes on better, reduces trapped air bubbles, and provides more protection.

24$ is 10-12% of the price of a nexus. That's just insane.
To each it's own, but I guess it's just not for me. It's not like fingerprints or small scratches can be seen when the screen is on.
I have the Spigen ultra fine matte screen protector. I had it on my epic and loved it. I have the newer version for my GS3 but they don't make it for nexus 7. For me, there are two main reasons why I like this one and have no reason to try any others. 1. The anti fingerprint is amazing, I have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the hands) so I leave a lot of grime/fingerprints and this screen does a great job of preventing buildup and making it easy to wipe away. Secondly, I do a lot of reading on my tablet and the matte/anti glare really makes it easier on the eyes (as an eye doctor, this is important to me). The continued increases in resolution, etc are great for movies and such, but not so great for eye strain. The matte kind of dulls it a little bit. Hope that helps. Also, it's pretty clear for a matter screen.

You have GOT to be kidding me....
[via HTC Inspire]
Unfortunately no
I don't mind paying than amount of money for a case, that adds security, but I'm not paying it to recuce fingerprints/degrade screen quality.
The OP wants something that is Matte and Quality. Just because the tablet was cheap doesn't mean this isn't a good buy. Accessories aren't supposed to scale in price based on the product listing (unlike Apple logic). The SGP protectors are the best and are about $20.
Too cheap to pay that? Then buy the crappy cheap ones and suffer the wrath of a crap protector.
Personally, I'd gladly pay for a product that is quality and won't peel up on the edges, scratch easily, and will ultimately have a life as long as the device. I'd rather spend $20 and be done with it then $10 a few times. The SP is VERY important piece to the puzzle as it is what you stare through. If it isn't cut right or cheap, it takes away from the whole sexiness.
The SGP, because of the Matte and anti-fingerprint qualities, doesn't get tacky when playing games for extended periods of time either. It stays dry and smooth all the time. So that percentage crap is stupid IMO. It wouldn't matter if you're buying this for an iPad Mini vs N7, the quality is the same.
^^ Thank you. excellent post.
that percentage crap is ridiculous. well said.

Have fun with that. There is a big difference in quality between a $2 SP and a $20 one.. especially when dealing with a MATTE. Be prepared for disappointment and a waste of time, energy, and money.

Agreed, the $199-249 price of the N7 is sort of an illusion, and does not mean that it's only worth $199 and we should skimp on accessories.
If not for Amazon, B&N and Google's price wars, N7 would be 300+ like the iPad mini... then $20 for screen protector wouldn't seem so crazy.
I've had my N7 for just 4 weeks and already some super-thin scratches, a decent SP is on the list now... Scratches are only visible at an angle, but I want to keep my trade-in value for the N7 gen2, so $20 is worth it.
I think the majority of matte protectors have this rainbow effect but I have one on my HTC vivid and you get used to it after a while. It's worth it to have the matte finish and after a while you don't even notice the rainbow effect.
Hey everyone. So I just got my brand new droid turbo and was wondering what brand and type of screen protector you are using and if you recommend it.
I understand the general pros and cons of matte vs glossy, but with the droid turbo having a quadHD display and having the pixels not so close to the top of the screen as other phones (from what I heard) should that affect choosing one over the other?
Thanks for any and all input!

Non-existent. Comparable to a Zagg HD screen, no orange peel feel on the Skinomi. I think I'm noticing a little more finger oil left behind on the Skinomi vs. the Zagg but not enough to be noticeable and not 100% sure. The screen fit is much better than the Zagg's I put on my wife and son's MotoX's.

Edit: I echo a later comment about 'dents' in the Skinomi. I imagine it's the same property that allows for self healing, but it's making me crazy. I've ordered
Motorola Droid Turbo (Verizon) XT1254 Tempered Glass Screen Protect... http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P8V5J4I/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_RvFGub1RNXY44 and will follow up.
1/7/15 the tempered glass is great. Fits great.
Skinomi has been great so far. I also will note, that once the application fully dried there was no clarity issues (rainbowing) that I've have had in the past with some screen protectors.
I'm not having a good experience with the skinomi. Ordered two a week ago for mine and my wife's turbo, they both went on ok, yet mine had some bubbles in the lower left corner, figured it would clear up in a day or two when all the solution dried up. Wrong, instead it peeled up and would not stick back down. Contacted skinomi for a replacement, recieved Monday, today the upper right corner on the new one peeled up... Bummed.
The upper right corner on the new one had the same type of little bubbles the lower left corner had on the previous. I think it's something to do with the adhesive underside..
I installed skinomi 3 days ago and so far so good. Clarity is solid and the feel of the screen, which is important to me, is smooth . My only problem is that the screen protector gets indents easily, even when I softly press my fingernail against it. I'm not sure if they will work themselves out after a while, but I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker since the product is still doing its job well.

So it started off well enough but what I noticed is that over time it continued to pick up more and more marks in the protector which never healed and now it's starting to peel up on the edges. Time to find another brand or just go naked since they give us one free screen replacement.

If anybody is looking for Zagg quality (plastic glossy) screen protectors I will recommend the XtremeGuard wet install. Very easy to install and after 8 hours you will not have any bubbles. I will eventually get a tempered glass version but not right now as it seems the jury is mostly out still. This is a cheap ($1.99) fix. I am super picky on screen protectors and will stand by this guy. It fits exactly edge to edge. Total screen coverage with no overhang.
For reference, I worked at Best Buy (back in the day) and always used Zagg protectors and would say this rivals it for 10% of the price. Definitely worth a try for those feeling adventurous with the wet install. I hate the crappy dry installs..

Now I am just waiting for people on here to recommend a Tempered glass that isn't garbage..

Still waiting for that tempered glass as well. I bought an hd screen protector from ebay, which left a bubbly mess... so now that Im waiting for the next brand to come in the mail, I've been going with no screen protector, and it's sooooo much better. I'm just going to have to be super careful not to drop. Not sure that I'll ever be able to use a device with a screen protector again after this.

The 'HD' dry installs are always bubbly messes. I guess that's why they sell them in packs of 6. I will never go back to them regardless if they are a name brand like Xtremeguard.
I really don't like screen protectors in general but use my phone at the gym and don't trust myself. The wet install is a solid protector until a good tempered glass comes out.

Hm, I've had some fair luck with the dry install ones. As long as you do it properly, most brands are pretty good. my favorites are tech armor and amfilm, personally, although amfilm doesnt have a screen protector for the turbo, seemingly.

Glossy VS Matt screen protector Ipad?
I noticed there are two types. For the ipad which is better ( i generally use it at home, sometimes take it outside). Whats the difference and which ones better?

If you take it outside, the anti-glare screen protectors will help with sun rays and glare on your screen, but you DO lose some quality of the image. HD will just be a clear piece of plastic that protects the screen, but fingerprints and glare are a bit more of an issue.
