Michael Fish (TV Weatherman) does a base jump! - Off-topic

Everyone remember him?
For those of you who don't know his name, Michael Fish became one of the most famous weathermen of all time in 1987, when a great storm battered the British Isles and killed 18 people, following Fish's prediction that the weather would be fine and clement all night. This storm, that was so freak and unpredictable, has gone down in history as one of the worst in recorded history. Fish, 68, often speaks out to support action to prevent climate change, as he understands that our current behaviour will cause devastating effects on our climate, leading to more frequent and more powerful storms, like the one which made him famous.
In order to raise awareness for climate change, he recently teamed up with Rapanui Clothing, a British eco-wear brand (recently noted by Sir Richard Branson for their eco-efforts!) and did a BASE jump from a block of flats in London. Scary? Yes. Want to see the video?

Earth Hour, who's supporting?

With a forum like xda where members are from all around the globe, I'd like to see who will help by participating in this.
For more info: http://www.earthhour.org/home/
The idea is that this Saturday, for one hour, you turn all your lights out to help against global warming. At least that's my take on it.
Saturday, March 28th 20:30-21:30 local time
This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.
For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.
This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.
In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.
We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.
VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.
Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

Great idea! let´s support!
Count me in TheChampJT!!
Hope can this be a sticky!
Already sent to all my contacts
Cheers,
I do not support. Global warming is a farce. Twenty years from now polar bears will be asking us to turn the heat up.
Not a chance from me. Because I'm sceptical and prefer to make up my own mind than simply believe something anyone can say without proof, and then make you out to be bad if you don't believe it. I'll be behaving as I normally do - one energy efficient light bulb on in whichever room I'm in only, unless I'm not home.
This is the best article I have found to explain why I dislike anything to do with supposed global warming.
' In the first Earth Day in 1970, UC Davis’s Kenneth Watt said, “If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.” '
I would love to quote from it more but I hope that some 'believers' will actually read it and not simply think the standard '...you're evil because you don't care...etc' which is not the point or correct.
Ehh.. My lights stay out most of the time anyway.. Course, my computers stay running 24/7/365.25...so I think that's the offset.. As for turning them off for earth hour, I would, but I'm probably gonna be at work, and I'm afraid that half of them wont boot back up when I get home.. LMFAO!!
lets see..... Its my opinion... ok?...
if we shut off all our light one hour we can help our earth?
jejeje what about the electrical generator plants!!!! that monsters must BE!!!! the ones that needs to be shutdown just a few days... cause in 1 hour the heat will not cease all the power on itselfs... please dont be so close mind thing on global you all say OH yeah help the earth global help and bla bla bla... wel thionk in big causes!... and please... it better that has other mind on recycling or something more take care of trees... water or something more not on an hour of shutting down.
BTW... I will do it.. maybe my account comes a little cheap because of that hour without lights up...
lol! I think the idea behind is that if enough people do participate in this, then certain organizations will see that people do want help the cause. They say the outcome of this will determine the future actions taken.
Global warming? global colding?
We really don´t know for sure what will happens in the future...
What I can see on this thread request is a POSITIVE asking to get toghether and achieve something that may or may not help, but the simply idea of doing something in group with a cause (Even if the cause is only getting a lower energy monthly acoount) makes me want to get in, and I don´t think this will harm the Earth or anybody...
I respect all opinions, we should do the same regarding this thread that is simply asking to support, if not also is ok.
But what is true is that we have to do something to help Earth!!!
Lights off, recycling, permaculture, etc... do whatever you believe in to help but do it!!

Really? Us puny humans can help Earth? She has survived countless asteroid strikes, volcanic eruptions, solar flares, and she never got any help from us in the past. We are not hurting Earth, we are only trashing it up.
We need to be saving our own asses...... from ourselves.
Yes my whole family is participating in it, I think it's the least people can do to save the environment.
Our local city government even made a huge poster banner for this.

Belief, like religion, no proof/evidence or even reasoning is required. Then, the 'non believers' get critisized.
Am I the only one who feels that the weather shouldn't hit two different etxremes in one week? About two weeks ago, it snowed on a Saturday, then was almost 70 the following Thursday. You honestly can't tell we aren't to blame for such odd weather patterns.

I doubt that you're the only person who thinks that way but, I suspect that if you, or anyone else had the inclination to check the history records, that it would not be unusual.
Also I find it odd that people think that the weather should or shouldn't behave in a certain way. As mentioned in the article I linked to on the first page, we (human beings) have not yet managed to make a climate model accurately simulate changes in the past. We certainly haven't managed to make anything which can predict anything accurately more than a few hours into the future, after which, things degenerate into vague generalities. When did you last see a forcast which predicted the weather to be a certain stae at an exact time eg 'starts to rain at 12:30 stops at 13:50'? It just doesn't happen, and I find it ridiculous & arrogant for people to expect it to behave in a certain way.
Also weather and climate are not the same thing, climate deals with averages over long periods of time, so to different types of weather in a short space of time are irrelevant to the longer term climate.

I understand your point a bit, but calling the exact time rain will start/stop is nowhere near the fact that the weather isn't close to the usuals. I never recall a time in my life where the temp has jumped almost 50 degrees within a week, not even, 5 days. Either way, like I said before, there is a lot we do everyday that we don't think twice about that constantly has an affect on the world. I'm certainly not trying to start some sort of revolution here, but it amazes me that so many are more concerned with how much they own or what they own. Someday none of it may ever matter.
Great point!

I agree too. Here in California, we've been having a drought for the last 3 years and we'll probably have to start water rationing eventually, however in Fargo, North Dakota at this very moment, people are racing to fill about 2 Million sand bags to protect themselves from the expected 40 foot (12 Meter) crest in the river. It hasn't reached 40 foot crest since 1897! At least to me, something certainly isn't right here... So count me in for "election".

3 of you say how odd the weather is because it's so variable, obviously it's common because you all xperience it.

I used google and found the site above, I did it on my phone so detail is hard to see but there are clearly large temerature variables between days.
@TheChampJT, I think you don't understand my point at all. No one can predict weather accurately for more than a few hours, yet you claim that it should or shouldn't behave in a certain way. I have provided evidence that your experience is normal, you just don't remember it. As to people caring about possessions etc, why shouldn't they? Do you live in a commune? Are you a communist? It's natural.
@Dave, all I can say is wow! 112 years since the last similar event! on a world aged in the billions! 112 years is a massively impressive number isn't it?
If anything (& I don't claim to know the local geography) it's more affected by urbanisation (man made efficient drainage vs old seeping slowly through the earth) than by climate change.
Also how far apart are cali & n.Dakota? I don't get surprised if it's sunny in England & raining in Italy, why would I?
My last point in this message - Even if the climate is changing, so what? Why should I worry or care? It's been very different before, and it will again. It's simply human arrogance and self importance which makes us think we are responsible and or need to do something about it

Very well said my friend. Humans can be so ignorant when making assessments based on the few short decades we each live on this Earth. But you can't argue with those kinds of people. They are going t believe what they want to believe.
I will say this; there is no doubt in my mind human activity affects the world's climate, but ALL life's activity affects the climate. The so called "erratic" weather is NORMAL. It has been that way for eons of time and there is nothing you can do about it.
Now I'm all for alternative and renewable energy, but only because fossil fuels are becoming harder to find, and or may be monopolized by some countries because of their geographic resources. Please don't give me this "We need to save the Earth" crap. She can recover from anything we can throw at her.

I believe this is often referred to as "commitment" ... which IMHO ranks right up there with "honour", "respect", and "ethics". Although I have no issues with living life the fullest, some actions such as adultery do have consequences which sponsors must keep in mind.
At the time I read this thread, I felt that it simply served to instigate a "flamewar" session amongst fellow XDA members or to encourage comments that could be construed as a personal attack on Tiger Woods behaviour as depicted by the media - and as such closed it. Additionally, I felt the thread communicated a negative message to younger - more impressionable - readers.
As a result of closing the thread however, a fellow XDA member felt that I was being too harsh and that to some degree, my actions communicated an undesireable form of censoring.
As such, I have taken the matter up with Flar. In the interest of not communicating a form of censoring, I have chosen to re-open this thread for others to comment with the caveat that it not deteriorate into a personal attack on Tiger Woods or fellow XDA members.

James Cameron, Avatar and his inspiration

In all the interviews of James Cameron regarding his movie Avatar, never does he mention, nor has any interviewer asked him the question - What is his real inspiration of using the name "Avatar", Blue Skin Aliens, who also fly on Large birds???
The answer is very obvious to anybody who knows world history, but I wonder why James Cameron is shying away from it????
Yeah, there was some news about it for giving the credit and all and then it faded away just in a few days.
Well I have no idea what the origin is, that you are implying he stole the plot from. Or is it just the name? Either way please do tell.
In his interview [linked below] he kinda' touches on what inspired him to do Avatar... the under-water world. Watch & listen for more information:
http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/dpp/buzz/avatar-james-cameron
It's not a full interview, only a few minutes long, but he does kinda' hint to the question being asked in the first post.

Since you asked, I will tell you.
Avatar is a sanskrit word "Avatar or Avatāra (Devanagari अवतार, Sanskrit for "descent" [viz., from heaven to earth]) refers to a deliberate descent of a deity from heaven to earth, and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation" (ref: wikipedia).
He also fails to mention that the concept of Avatar, which according to Hindus, is a Human being form that the God uses to descend to Earth, mingles with the Humans and helps the Humans by freeing them of the evil that is rampant. Isn't that what the main character essentially ends up doing in his film?
What about the Blue skin color? That is also a rip-off from the Hindu Avatar of Lord Krishna, who is a blue skinned Avatar of Lord Vishnu, came to earth to help fight for the truth and liberate us from the evil. (see my avatar - That is Lord Krishna).
Now I do not want this topic to turn in to a religious topic, but I sincerely believe that where credit is due, one should not shy away from it. I love James Cameron and I love all his movies, but just not able to understand why he does not give the credit where it is due.
It is also right that people I hang out with and who are unaware of this injustice should be educated to understand what is reality.
Thanks!
Could it not just be simple?
"Avatar: a graphical image that represents a person, as on the Internet. " - Dictionary.com
So basically, his avatar (which is whats its refered to in the film) is just a representation of him in a different form other than a person.
Heck, avatars are used all over the internet, so why not in a film in a real world sense?
Well, i maybe completely wrong, but then we don't know the facts yet!
Just my 2 cents, as its never been offically explained

OK, thanks.
I understand what you are saying, but I think that you're thinking about it too much.
There are no doubt plenty of science fiction books which are many years old which have a similar theme of a person control a remote entity (be it mechanical or biological) so I don't think that he needs to give credit to any other stories.
When I initially heard of Avatar, I immediately thought of Joe Haldeman's Forever War and Forever Peace books.
Off the top of my head, maybe he should give Charlie Kauffman a credit also, for the idea of possessing another body in Being John Malcovich.
Then another credit to the first scientists / sci-fi writers who first conceptualised genetic engineering and cloning.
JRR Tolkien for people riding giant eagles.
The smirfs for blue people.
Any number of pre industrial peoples for the use of bows and arrows...

Agreed. But see this formula
Avatar + Blue Skin + Savior = Hindu Mythology of Lord krishna
Avatar is a Sanskrit word (Sanskrit is the original @3500 years old language of the Hindus), Some insights about Sanskrit here
You speak of cloning. That was also part of the Hindu Mahabharata Epic. Actually that book contains Artificial insemination, Cloning (the queen has 100 sons by breaking up the 1 egg she has), Flying machines (Vimana), Missiles, and last but not the least the Atomic Bomb (called Brahmastra..more here). This book is the mother-lode of all Sci-fi authors.

Maybe he doesn't give the credit you expect for a very simple reason: That he was unaware if the etymology of the word avatar.
We don't say 'gay' when we mean 'happy', there are many more words which have changed use over time. If all writers had to give credits for words 3500 years old...
He had also made more than one film where the simple title refers to a character(s), [the] terminator; aliens; abyss; titanic.
He has simply chosen a punchy title easily remembered by the public.
As someone one said, ' there are no original stories left, it's how you tell them '
Being blue is irrelevant to the story, there are several avatars in the film, he hardly saves all his friends, and most (all?) religions have a savoir who does god's will.

Oh I wish he did not know the meaning.
Know James Cameron and his work, he very certainly knows the meaning.
He researches his work very well. There is no denying that.
Avatar is hardly an English word. The word is 3500 years old and still in use today. It is not as as if it is a forgotten word of a forgotten language.
James' Avatar hardly saves all his friends...well that is exactly how the Avatar in Hindu mythology works. He does not save everybody, at least not as a mission.....but certainly makes sure that the evil is taken care (viz crushed, finished, killed...), and in turn saves the rest of the humankind.
See, one more similarity. Thanks for bringing it up.

Thanks!

And here I thought it was a modern "pochahantas". I probably didn't spell that right.

Right!
That is where he wants the people to believe his storyline is coming from.....the old red indians, the vietnam war, la la.....

I don't see it. how can he research science fiction?!!
this is coincidence, nothing more. and an example of religious believers retrofitting their theology to what they want or think fits it (groundhog day is another example, where on the dvd the director tells how many believers claimed it as an example of their faiths). no matter what I, or anyone says, you will use it as further proof.
Also, why would he intentionally lie about it? it surves no purpose.

#1. If he really did not know the meaning of Avatar, then he has lost me as his audience. But that is not the case. He does know the meaning. In his story Jake embodies the Blue Avatar body and gains entry to the world of Na' vi. The same exact way the Hindu God Vishnu gains entry to the Human world in a Human Body of Krishna. I would not have had such an issue if James Cameron would have called it say "Spirit Within" or some such name. No. He had to use the word Avatar. That confirms that he knows the word and he understand it's etymology.

I looked across at you, you looked across at me.... there we stood, cross eyed.

Back in the mid 2000s I was abducted and forced to administer forums and work with Moderators at XDA.

For context... @MikeChannon is 109 years old and he still has a 56k modem, so please, don't post any high resolution picture here or you'll use up his bandwidth for the year.
JK....Mike has been around longer than anyone (he clearly has no friends) and he's been the glue that has held the community together for a decade. As much as we joke, I appereciate Mike's involvement and work over so many years. He is a _true_ OG!

Really!! 56k is a thing now and what... you don't have to dial up.
Wowsie. Not to worry I actually get by very nicely with 28.8 kilobits per second which I find goes about the same speed @svetius speaks.... and sounds very similar actually

Hello from darkest Yorkshire !

Just a line to thank you for accepting me into the group. I'm a retired VoIP engineer, prior to that a Marine Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy although I started off as a Morse Code basher in the Royal Navy at 15...so quite a long time in what they now call IT. I like to keep my mind active so pulling out lots of computer stuff I've collected over the years and getting them up to speed with new SSD and RAM plus the latest W11 OS (with a few hacks) As I get them fettled up they will be going on eBay or Facebook market place so I will finally put a smile on the wife's face, she hates all my 'clutter' Sad to see some of these Sony Vaio's go as I've collected what I thought were the best laptops money could buy but then Sony pulled the plug on support ho hum. I will no doubt be asking lots of stupid questions, bear in mind I'm just a morse basher with a bit of age dabbling in something that interests me!
All the best
Steven Barrett

They sure do, and so do we...that adjustment can be a rough one! From an environment where frequent use of certain four letter expletives is part of the everyday vocabulary, to the "civilized" part of society where such things result in a trip to your not so friendly Human Resources representative.

Odd. I wonder if that was a Cold War thing. Anyway, welcome to XDA, a lot of us (especially the moderator staff like @Oswald Boelcke and @Badger50 ) are 60+ so you aren't so out of place! Never too old to learn!

Also from me a very warm welcome! I commenced to serve my country, NATO i.e. the free world in the Western hemisphere at that time, too. Actually much easier than the times afterwards, which I experienced until my retirement or monitor nowadays. But I think we better don't turn into any political discussions on XDA.
