[Q]Things to know before installing a Custom ROM

Hi,
I have been looking through various custom roms for optimus 2x and intend to install one very soon. Before installing i have some questions
1. What is baseband? How do i know which one to use?
2. What is the best/recommended steps to install a custom rom? I know what you have to do before installing a custom rom, what i meant is the order in which you should install custom rom, kernel, some performance packs and baseband, etc.
3. What do you look for in a rom before deciding to install one?
And finally, how can i help the development community?

1. baseband is the software for radio in the phone. You dont have to flash new, you can keep on you baseband from original rom, its not flashed automatically when you flash custom roms by clockworkmod. you only need to download lg getril for example from market and install matching rill to your baseband.
2.
step1: root phone
step2: instal clockworkmod
step3: download zip file with rom to your sdcard
step3: power off phone, then hold volume down + pover on(first volume button) until the clockworkmod starts
step4: backup phone in CWM
step5: every thread with custom rom have the manual how to flash in cwm, its easy.
You can read about it on modaco optimus 2x forum. Lets google it.
There are basically two types of rom for O2X, the one is based on the modified stock rom. the second one is cyanogenmod based rom, i like the cyanogenmod.
You should use matching kernel to type of rom(cyanogenomd, based on ofiicial), kernel is closer to handle hardware, i can imagine it like kernel is between hardware and ROM, ROM is between kernel and user.
3. you should try some ROMs and decide what you like.

Your baseband is visible in Settings/About Phone. Try first to flash without changing it. Get the matching Ril with GetRil or LG Ril version in market.
To root you can use latest Superoneclick (see thread in dev section, it seems now to work with GB a well) or nvflash method (see rooting for dummies in dev section).
In the first case you instal cwm with ROM Manager from market, or your can flash it directly using Rusty!'s build (see stickies thread in dev section).
Nothing else to add to the above post. Two families of ROM as said, all coming from stock LG are based on 20L/M/O original ROM. Others are either cyanogen (see in Kang thread, as nightlies build bot is out of order for now) direct, or cyanogen derived (Miui).
Read carefully first posts in each ROM thread, and be sure to have always a back up.

No reason to flash kernel first it will be overwritten by ROM.
ROMs are always coming with a kernel!
First: ROM. A good thing is to boot then, and follow the First Run Configuration Wizard.
Second: Flash Kernel of your choice.
Third Power Pack if you want, mandatory with SPica's kernels to have all features.

No Problem = No change.

just to add.. don't forget to back up your messages/app data/whatnot with titanium backup or whatever
also note that a lot of the LG system apps will obviously be gone when going to CM7 for eg:
the camera for one thing has it's pros and cons. a lot of people seem to prefer the stock camera
the music player doesn't have a cool landscape mode
fm radio is **** with only 6 presets
sound recorder doesn't let you change quality
no built in memo pad (but you can always get one from the market anyway)
and the LG widgets (i like their weather and calendar widget)
"backup and restore" app which was quite useful (i believe it's made by Sprite).. but no worries since there's titanium anyway
although perhaps these system apps are backup-able as an apk in titanium?

Stock LG apps can effectively be backed up as apk, but they can't be run on CyanogenMod, so no interest.

I bought 2x 3 days ago. The lg gingerbread is fine. But not that impressive. I want to root it but the problem is rooting, voids your warranty. Is there is any way so that you can backup the android os given default (by lg), so that you can install it later to claim ur warranty later on. And is there is anything else? to do please correct me.

There are many stock ROMs over in the dev section and there are even guides to show how to restore it. So just use the search button and read
About rooting there is one guide I would recommend you using it because it really explains everything

Baseband can't be changed with cwm. Only smartflash. And a custom ROM always come with a kernel or it can't boot...

Better to go back to ext3, in case the new ROM doesn't format. And to be sure no residual file will be left and not overwritten, that could cause troubles.

Is there a newer basaband than 1035.21_20110725? This version is the same in all latest stock ROMS (V10D, V20L, V20M). Flashing the V20M (with smartflash) will have a different baseband although it will say 1035.21_20110725? I installed the leaked V20o but I have problems with signal loss after some hours in stand-by.

It's one of numerous LG inconsistencies... Different BB with same number.
It seems in fact they are not the same. Try different Rils with GetRil, the 20o one but also the 20l etc...

I did try different RIL when I had the V20o. I changed the RIL V20o Europe to V20L Italia which I had with V20M update which I did through LG official update. Do you think flashing V20M with smartflash and then installing the V20o will fix the problem?

I just managed to brick my TG01 trying to get WP7 on it (can't believe it, have flashed endless WM ROM's and had Android running on as well without issue :-( )... so I have done a bit of a knee jerk and quickly bought an LG Optimus 2X to play with until I can figure out how/if I can fix the TG01.
Obviously I've read reviews and seen feedback, and hoping I don't get a dodgy one.. but I've bought my brand new sim free for £199 from Amazon so should give me some protection if it's broken.
Any tips other than doing the 2.3 update ASAP? (until ICS official comes out)

Root it and flash a custom rom!
Stock rom sucks really, really! It's slow, buggy etc. Also, don't download the OTA update, because froyo is easier to root with Superoneclick.

I think temasek's CyanogenMod KANG is the best rom available, especially combined with Vadonkas KANG kernel.

If you root it and flash CM on it, you'll obviously won't be able to get the official ICS update. But the truth is, LG is so 'great' that you likely have to wait until next year to get the next OTA. So the best thing is to root. Also, in a few weeks hopefully, CM9 will come out which is based on ICS.

Aside from that: Can I just flash the newest temasek KANG (what does KANG stand for anyway?) and the newest KANG kernel you mentioned? Or do they have dependencies that could brick the P990? And what about the other business (rils and whatnot?).
And is it as simple as rooting it (I managed with Superoneclick with the latest OTA), installing rom manager, let rom manager install cwm (will that work? I also see temasek has a KANG CWM folder in this repository), boot into cwm, wipe everything and flash the temasek rom, and after than, repeat the same with a kernel zip?
The dependencies and sequences confuse me most. On the DHD I put ICS on, the ROM came with a working kernel. But in that Temsake KANG thread it says:
"Flashable zip for Stock CM Kernel with Voodoo Sound - for p990 only (Optional)"
For a CM kernel? So do I need this installed first somehow? All very confusing for newbies to flashing like me...

The latest temasek KANG with Vadonkas KANG kernel won't brick your phone. Many people use this combination and no one has bricked their phone so far.
A great CM KANG is nothing else but a CM rom but then developed by developers outside Cyanogen Team. They use Cyanogens source code and improve or change it anyway they want. KANGs are also more stable than normal nightlies.
So Vadonkas KANG kernel is just a kernel he improved/changed using source codes from others.
Note that temasek's kang standard comes with 218 RIL. You can change this manually with the GetRIL app. Basically you don't have to change the bb. Also, Vadonkas KANG kernel comes with voodoo sound so don't worry about that.
Then flashing:
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Backup rom
3. Wipe everything.
4. Flash rom.
5. Flash kernel
6. Flash Google Apps
7. Done, reboot.
If you come from cm, then you don't need to wipe everything, just cache and dalvik. Also, if you want to update your kang rom (temasek), you can just flash it over your previous rom.

Haha no problem.
Yes you need to install CWM with rom manager first, preferably the most recent one.
Just the latest Gapps, you'll find them in the CyanogenMod wiki.
RIL has to match with your baseband so you'll have the best possible signal and minimal battery loss. The reason for al those versions is because of the fact that most countries have its own RIL. The app wil notify you if your bb and ril match. If not, flash another, if so, keep it that way .
Note: when you're coming from stock rom you need to wipe everything so also make titanium backup, just in case...

Hm ... okay ... CWM is on it, done from Rom Manager, selected the LGE Optimus "x.... booted into it ... but it says it can not mount my SDCARD (large 32 GB thing, which works inside Android .. but oiccasionally seems to behave a bit difficult.).
EDIT: Trying another SDCARD now ... an old Samsung 8 GB. Hm nope ... it can't mount that 8 GB card, either They're just ordinary FAT32 formatted cards. Guess I'm stuck for now. Could there be something wrong with the CWM Version? Rom Manager did ask about the model, but I selected the correct one I assume.
EDIT2: It seems ROM Manager is not really flashing cwm? And that booting into it from Rom Manager causes the SDCARD moutn isssue due to soemthing called "redirector"? I tried getting into CWM by all kinds of fingerpress combinations I read about ... but nothing seems to work so far.
EDIT3: Seems working now ... Power + Volume Down ... like HBoot. It also sees the sdcard now, if you directly boot into it ... let's continue this journey....
EDIT4: Arrived. Tamasek ROM + Lower Power Kernel + Gapps. Now to find out what's better than stock ROM

For those not comfortable with flashing custom rom, flashing a custom kernel may be good enough. I am using Horsepower SR2 with stock rom, took away many useless apps with root uninstaller, it is so much more damn smooth then the original, more responsive too. Played Need For Speed those kind of games, totally no lag.

Excellent... picking up some ideas already (like being able to just flash a new kernel for example ) Might do that as don't want to lose functionality.
Whatever I do I will use it at stock for a week or so, to check the phone is stable (I will probably update to latest software from LG first though to be honest).
I have also ordered a 3500mah extended battery and case cover. £4.99. Something tells me it's going to be cack, but thought i'd give it a go (I've read about the whole battery calibration thing and needing to be rooted etc, so I'll ask about that at a later time). I just was not going to pay something like £75 for a mugen 4500mah battery that was even bigger. I believe mugen could easily fit three battery in parallel (including circuitry) in a 'T' shape to give the phone a thinner profile with a bigger battery. If I was able to get a battery cover that was a little bigger and fit, I would give it a go (I've wired a fair few batteries up recently). But I digress..

That's probably the worst you can do to check if your phone is stable LG ROMs were known to boot themselves etc, although I'm not sure if this still is the case. I didn't lose any functionality with flashing and it runs smooth as a baby tush. There's even a kernel using less power etc ...

What I meant is.. see if the phone has any problems, and see how it runs in general. I doubt LG would replace a phone with an alternative ROM if it goes wrong.
Also, without a baseline I can't determine how good an alternative ROM is. Also, with alternative ROM's on the TG01, I lost things such as being able to send/receive MMS's for some bizarre reason, and I see people saying things like "this app doesn't run, but does on stock", "no 3G vid calling on non-stock ROM"... so it's not as clean cut as you make out. I'm no stranger to hacking things about to get them to work, I'm a Dev in my job

Yeah... I read it a few months ago that froyo was easier to root than gb, but I guess that they're both easy to root now

Well... it has arrived :-D Trying to decide whether to turn it on before attempting to fix my TG01, as the battery charger arrived today as well lol.
EDIT: By the way.. I have just plugged it in to do a long first charge. Is it ok to turn it on whilst it's charging and play with it? lol Also.. it's a "Made in Korea" version, not sure if that matters?
Update: Well, I've updated my phone with 2.3.4 from the official site. And so far, I'm really liking the phone Everything is super smooth, the screen is nice, and the battery life seems good so far. I only lost 5% battery last night over about 7 hours, and that's on the stock rom with the battery not calibrated on anything fancy being done, and 3g/data still on etc.
'So far' it seems like a solid phone Really don't like the way the back cover comes on an off though, that is a really poor design.

It really depends what you want from the phone but... the best full custom ROM to go use for daily use I truly believe is CyanogenMod, there are two main CyanogenMod releases for the i9000.
First of all you have CyanogenMod 9 which is based upon Ice Cream Sandwich. If you download this make sure you get version 9.1.0 stable.
Secondly you have CyanogenMod 7 which is based upon Gingerbread. If you download this make sure you get version 7.2.0 stable.
You don't have to change the kernel for either of these ROM's (or any ROM as far as I know) but you can if you want more from the phone like having the ability to overclock it for example.
If you have to ask... yes CyanogenMod 10 is available but it has not yet been given the green light for a stable release so you may want to stay away from it until it reaches stable status.

Hi,
I suggest you to use for some time the "stock" samsung rom, in order that you can experience what features and apps you are missing (if any). In my case, when I was on the stock samsung rom I used to change the launcher because the defautl one didn't support display rotation. But this is me: I have several friend that decided to stay with the stock rom.
I personally use cyanogen, with stock kernels. You might very well change the kernel too (if you need special features, which is not my case).
Otherwise, if you just wanna have fun, go and install cyanogen. but be careful!! remember to make a backup of the efs folder (look around here how to do), beacuse if it is dameged during flashing you night end up with an unusable phone...

When this happens we flash back to stock with a stock ROM from SamMobile or a stock based ROM, fixes lost EFS info But good shout, backups do save a lot of headaches!

I prefer the stock rom are most stable, but i will root and try to delete or freeze the unlike/seldom use stock app. personnel opinion.

Thanx to everyone for the sound advice,i quite like the stock rom.
I tried cyanogen 7.2 briefly,but when i went to the file manager,it showed nothing on my sd card when really it has plenty of music files and apps on it.
Dunno why that was, anyway back on stock for now, might try again soon. Thanx again.

[Q] First-Time Custom ROM&/Kernel, need Answers

I've spent the last 24 hours browsing the O2x section of XDA, and decided that I might change the ROM and/or kernel. I'm considering either Paranoid Android or DjangoManouche ROMs with the KingOfBirds Kernel (If i go with DM) or Kowalski Kernel. However, I have some questions that I just can't find the yes/no answer for. Would anyone be able to answer these for me?..
1. I am running Stock Rooted ICS V30A with CWM v6.0.1.5, busybox and adb installed, which I assume I achieved through steps 3 and 8 on the AIO toolkit because I didn't do anything else.
Does this translate to "I am on the new partition layout with EXT4, have cwm recovery and can proceed to install kernels and ROMS for the new partition layout"?
2. I generally use my p990 for gaming, movies and internet yet still using it as a phone at school. None of the kernels (Kowalski's or KingOfBirds) I am looking at using state whether or not they have Tegra H/W acceleration support, which I do not want to loose. Do the above/all kernels for the p990 support H/W acceleration? :fingers-crossed:
3. Do the kernels and ROMs above still allow me to edit vold.fstab and have a 32gb internal memory from my sd card?
4. I see a lot of people saying CM10 is the best, but a lot of posts with questions and fixes for bugs with it. Any users of this one able to tell me if it is stable and would be suitable for me (see question 2)?

hi there! i'll try to answer some of your questions:
1) you are on the new bootloader and should flash rom's for this particular setting(this doesn't necessarily mean you can't go back to the old bootloader-search for unbrick tutorial in development section)
2) from what i know they do(someone correct me if i'm wrong)
3)i don't know
4)i can assure you that official cm10 is an excellent rom and you should try it ) (i for one never had any major problems(bug call,bsod) and will return to it after some testing )
5) i think it will do just fine
6)every custom rom has some guiding points in the first post(and second and maybe third ) ) please do follow them and you will have no trouble.

Thanks a million vader I'm going to give CM10 a shot on that note, but like you said if someone can confirm for sure if the H/W acceleration works that would be great too.

I don't think that h/w acceleration is something that lacks in the post-cm9 roms. After lg released both official ics, sources and our cm device maintainer aremcee(ricardo) got hold of them all stock roms and cm variants have hwa. I can confirm that tonyp, in his ParanoidAndroid has the option to assign which app to use hwa

Cool ok, Thanks again Just one last question - should I install kernels before/after zip if not specified by creator?I think I'm going to try pengus77's kernel and CM10 build for the new bootloader.

That was the last question hopefully Backing up my phone atm (done cwm, titanium and AIO backups, i should be covered ) and then I'm going to shoot this rom and kernel at it. I'll post back how it goes.

Few questions, CWM Backup, Custom Stock, Gingerbread...

Hi All,
Slowly getting use to my Note, and totally loving it... Yes, I have joined this party very late... But trust me, this device is PREMIUM compared to my last phone... So enjoying all what it has to offer...
However....
1) Is there a way to check your backups in CWM?? Just did a backup of what has taken me 2x days to finely tune the ROM.. only to find it failed an MD5 check and so wont restore.... - POINTLESS backup
2) Is there any official Samsung Stock Roms (UK pref / International) that are converted/flashable via CWM?? (Dont mind if they are GB, ICS or JB) I will of course be using Philz Kernel if its ICS based....
3) Are there any CLEAN Gingerbread roms available, either based off official Samsung GB or if there was a clean CM7 build...??
Other than that, I think most things are cool with the N7000

1. Yes go to clockwork mod folder on SD card
2. Yes search for stock DEODEXED ROM
3. Yes search. No cm7 ever though. There is a thread that lists all roms.

I was in CWM and started the backup, watched a bit of TV and came back to find the phone had rebooted, didnt tell me if it was successful or not, just ready to use phone again. Would of been nice if CWM had failed for it stay on that screen and show an error. I have since wiped the phone and now the backup is useless... All the files are there, and all 1.2Gb of data is present in seperate files. Not sure if I can flash them one at a time, although not a great way to restore...

I wondered if there was a STOCK (DEODEXED) Gingerbread Rom that can be flashed in CWM, or if there was ever a build of CM7 for the N7000 note... As far I can see there is no CM7, which surprises me as the phone shipped with Gingerbread and the phone itself was considered premium at the time, so would of thought the CM team would of done one...??

sorry i misunderstood what you were asking. CWM should NOT automatically reboot, so to me that means you had an unsuccessful backup. It should at the end say something like backup complete... also, regarding a million files in blob folders for CWM, that is not the best format. in backup settings, change the format to "tar" not "dup"

if you want the info, search for the difference b/t deodexed and odexed on google, its interesting..
But yeah LSZ is a little old (almost a year now).
I would go with something XXLT4, LT5, LT6, LT9, or LTA (in order of newest, but there have been no major changes since LT4, so LT4 is fine), if you can find one. be sure to always include /preload in your full wipe procedure when flashing stock roms.
Another option is to just flash a FULL stock ROM, then Flash PhilZ (PC Odin or Mobile Odin) - but beware using odin and not have all the knowledge puts you in the DANGER ZONE of killing your phone with the brick bug

to Install GB via flashable zip, you can flash via Mobile Odin or CWM - or if the thread has special install instructions, follow those

As for CM7, they just never did it... CM9 was first.
Also, I know you're looking for stock stuff right now, but CM10.2 is a MAJOR upgrade from CM7. The official CM10.2 nightlies are pretty amazing.
But thats all opinion, the stock has a lot of cool features and benefits... just not for me (i used to love it, but its too bloated and slow)
