I have a PhoneGap application designed to work on multiple mobile platforms. I'm loading a dynamic HTML content from an external page on the Internet using jQuery Mobile. The problematic system is Windows Phone 7.
This is what I get from the external page, with the URL of the script tag already replaced to load from the phone instead of from the net to save bandwidth:
HTML:
<script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8" src="x-wmapp1:/app/www/test.js"></script>
This works fine on Android, iPhone and even BlackBerry when I replaced the x-wmapp1: part by a respective counterpart (e.g. file:///android_asset/www/ on Android). However, on Windows Phone 7 it doesn't seem to work at all.
When I try to load the same URL via $.getScript function, it always returns a 404 eror, even if I try and load it with a relative path only.
Any suggestions?
I'm only guessing but the colon would throw xhtml. What standard are you writing to?

Sorry just reread! Ignore me lol. I will look at my sites and see how I wrote the external js links

I'm writing for HTML5 standards, although colon is not a problem on other platforms
Looks like it was a problem with PhoneGap 1.8.1 - after upgading to Cordova 2.0 (PhoneGap got renamed) it all works now... thanks for all the help!

Hello Everyone,
I recently bought an EEE PC as a second computer and seeing as it's about the most easily lost or stolen laptop ever made, I thought it might be an idea to run some software on it that might help me recover it should it ever go missing.
After trying a few existing bits of software and not finding any satisfactory, I resorted to writing my own.
Since it seemed useful to me, I thought I'd make it available to anyone interested. It's a very early version at the moment and very basic, but I don't think there are too many bugs (famous last words!! ).
I thought I would post a message here as I use this forum quite a lot, and I know a lot of people here won't have a problem with editing the config file to set it up, I've tried to make things as simple as possible. However, if you don't know the difference between POP3 and SMTP mail servers, this app is probably not for you!!
If people are interested, I'll continue to develop it further. A few ideas are listed on my website.
Visit www.ajhonline.co.uk for download links and help.

this isn't hard to circumvent.
Nice app, but wouldn't they probably wipe the HDD?
How would it compare to Lojack's (utilizes Computrace) service? Some laptops have the Computrace service embedded in the bios. I currently use a Dell D410 and Panasonic CF-19, and they both have Computrace built into the bios. If someone formats my hard drive, or installs another harddrive, the bios will rebuild the neccessary files, run in the the background and start reporting the IP address back to Lojack.
Yes, of course the hard drive could be wiped, or it could never be connected to the internet. It is also easy to circumvent, although if I do develop it further, it would be fairly straight forward to make it less obvious and better hidden. This is only a very first version, to gauge interest more than anything,
It's not meant to be 100% foolproof, that probably isn't possible anyway. The advantage is it's free. I really developed it because I couldn't get Adeona to work (it just kept failing to connect to its server), not to compete with commercial solutions.
Hmmm, you know how I said I didn't think there were any bugs....
I just found that the Windows version was not saving the detected IP addresses correctly, so it would email you a "new" IP address message every time the computer was rebooted.
However the problem is now fixed, and a new version 0.1a available for download. The cross platform version wouldn't have been affected, but there's a new version of that too, just for completeness.
Sorry
Alex
I've now made some additions and released a new version which includes the changes below:
Added a separate configuration application to simplify initial setup
Added the ability to encrypt the mail server password for better security
Added a link to DNSTools to the IP Detected email for easy lookup of the WHOIS records for the IP Address
As before, visit www.ajhonline.co.uk and download version 0.2 from there.
Alex
PS - If you are using the Windows version and doing an upgrade from a previous version, make sure you keep a copy of your existing fyl.properties file, otherwise it will be overwritten during the install and any existing known IP addresses will be lost.
huff,.
i wish i have seen this before i lost my friend laptop,.
great help sir,. keep up,.
Version 0.22 is now available for download from www.ajhonline.co.uk.
It's only a small update; you are now able to specify a range of IP addresses as already known so that you don't get an email when one of those is detected.

question about file transfering between a pc and hd7.
when i connect hd7 to my pc it doesn't appear as a storage device, as it does all modern devices with android.
i read about the way around, but it didn't work for me.
zune helps to transfer only a number of file types - like media files or pictures.
just one sample - i've installed freda reader, but can't put any epub-file to read! i can't even attach it to an email - well, i can attach, but can't save it on the phone - it says, that .epub is just not supported by the phone!
so, the question is: is there any chance to transfer any file from my pc to hd7, and, for example, to save any attached file on the phone?
you can email it, but it has to have the proper program to open it.
For freda, the best work around right now is to use caibre ebook library on your desktop, set it up as a server, then you can add them to freda.
If you search for freda to wp7, you should find step by step instructions.
Check this out:
http://www.turnipsoft.co.uk/freda/calibre-how-to.htm
Now I just realized HTC HD7 with the GREAT Windows Phone OS is SUCKS ! I'm facing the same problem too, NO FILE TRANSFERRING accept songs, photos & videos ! Is that all ?
I'm wondering why HTC came out with a phone like this with no mass storage support ? More worst than apple with itunes, at least I'm able to add/remove apps through itunes. With ANDROID, I can do almost EVERYTHING I want ! What about the mighty Zunes ? SUCKS !
Do you know why people want to migrate their HD2 Windows to Android ?...
---------- Post added at 11:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 AM ----------
Do you mean using email to attach files/data to do as file transfer ? What about I'm going transfer a gig or 4 gig ? Transferring a 4 gigabyte files over the internet ? Woo... I know you're kidding, right ?
Some more, do I have to know freda to force using my HD7 for file transferring ?
If I have to do some complicated steps to make my smartphone working, then how can I called my phone is a SMARTPHONE ? Because it is not smart at all !
Friend, I'm not criticizing or scolding what. I'm feeling that I'm being like an idiot holding a stupid phone that I can't do anything to it.
It's just a different way of thinking about storage, that's all. To improve security, and reduce the risk of a bad app trashing your phone, Microsoft adopted a model where pretty much everything operates in a 'sandboxed' mode. You are not meant to share data between apps on the phone (except using copy-paste ).
If you're coming to WP7 from Android, (or from WM6) that model is going to seem strange, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. You just need to get used to the idea that each app will have its own preferred cloud location(s) for keeping its data. So for media, it's Zune; for MS Office it's SkyDrive or SharePoint, etc.
And third-party apps can provide their own choice of locations (so for example, among the book-reader apps, Freda offers you SkyDrive or DropBox, Bookviser lets you chose between SkyDrive or a dedicated Bookviser cloud store ... ).
Now of course if you prefer to think of your phone as a mass-storage device, WP7 won't suit you, and you should use a different OS (or unlock your WP7 phone if you must).

All,
Has anyone found an app that will work on the ViewSonic G-Tablet that will allow me to fill in PDF forms?
I have a number of forms I've created for work that allow me to document changes to our network (HIPAA requirement). and I was hoping to use my G-tablet to carry with me to fill in the forms instead of my laptop.
The forms have required fields, Check Boxes, as well as Drop Down lists.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Adobe's Acrobat Reader should work. It's available free at adobe.com (I'm running the new version X on my gTab, Vegan ß3 - Haven't tried PDF fields yet, but everything else works great).
You will need to "rights enable" your PDF in Acrobat Professional if you want to save your filled form or post your data online to a backend server. Acrobat Pro is also needed to create the fields in the first place. There may be other software available that can do that as well, but none for Android AFAIK.
If you can use a regular PC to create the forms, you could also look at OpenOffice.
Check out this blog entry on PDF form creating with OpenOffice :
(can't post links, so you will have to paste it)
danilop.wordpress.com/2008/07/02/how-to-create-pdf-forms-with-openoffice/
I haven't used OpenOffice before, but it sounds like a good suggestion.
Only issue I'm having right now is accessing their webpage from my G-Tablet. Everytime I try to connect, I get an FC and then it hangs the Tablet. (Running (TnT Lite 2.2.1) I'll keep playing with it and post my results.
Any other suggestions are welcome! ;-)

This thread is to record comments/questions on a guide I have posted up on my site regarding the steps to get a fully working Windows 8 Developer Preview install onto the HTC Shift.
http://blogs.distant-earth.com/wp/?p=313
The process to get Windows 8 working (with graphics correctly setup etc.) is a little bit of a pain but nothing all that difficult. Especially if you follow the steps (usual rules, I made mistakes to save others the hassle )
The resulting install of Windows 8 running at 1024*600 is VERY usable , much to my surprise. Metro is actually quite nice on the tablet form factor.
The touchscreen is a little unresponsive round the edges but I suspect that is my device as it has never been very good.
good work man thanks so much i will try and post my trial

SmartScreen by any chance?
If your getting the green messages the chances are you Ethernet connection is not working (is it USB, does Windows 8 ship with the driver for whatever chip it uses?).
Below is a copy/paste from a comment I made on the guide concerning SmartScreen issues.
djwillis said:
Hi,
The reason you get the green SmartScreen error messages is the lack of an Internet connection. Windows 8 includes a feature that used to only be part of IE that calls off to an MS web service to verify digital signatures are valid on newer type signed executables.
As both the Intel graphics driver and Windows Mobile Device Center are signed you can’t install without an internet connection or crippling SmartScreen.
Have another read as the order in which I installed the drivers was very deliberate and also intentionally ordered the way it was to work around the SmartScreen issues.
The guide does not even try to install the signed executables until you have got the Wireless LAN up and running so the signatures can be verified, I even mention SmartScreen as one of the reasons for the order of drivers in the guide .

John

Hi,
All the needed drivers are linked off the guide but as the HTC site seems to be up and down today I have now added mirrors to all the files (uploaded them to my server).
Checked and all the mirror links seem to be working fine .
The best way to try Windows 8 on the Shift is actually a fresh install. I would not suggest an upgrade at all .
fantastic i will give it a shot now

Are you going for a totally clean install as per the guide?
Is your USB stick all setup and bootable?
Assuming you are getting into the Windows setup booting off of the USB stick is it the part where you select the install disk that seems to show no HDD? If it it what was installed on your Shift before?
This sounds like an issue I had when I have Meego running off the HDD before I installed Windows 8 (BtrFS and a different partition layout seem to cause it).
Need Help,
I used the MS software to create the USB boot disk for window 8. try to install on the Shift. got to the part where it said loading files...then it show some blue squares on the upper left screen...it goes for 1/3 of the way and hang up....I let it run for 2 hours and had to do pull the battery.
try to re-install again..same result...
Do I need to format and partition the disk?

That sounds like a bad stick to be honest . The blue squares are replaced with the install menu after just a few minutes. This is all well before anything is messing with the Shift's HDD or hardware .
Try reformatting it and having another go. It can't hurt.

Right i managed to find the problem, only used your quide for the drivers as i installed windows 7 in a similar way, i used CMD and DISKPART to get a pen drive ready and then used XCOPY to move the installation media onto the drive but for some reason even though it said it was finished it was missing out a couple of files inside the sources folder, once i used XCOPY again over the existing media it managed to find the missing files and copy them. So you where right it was a problem with drivers missing from the install media and once they where found it was all clean sailing thanks to your fantastic guide
Thanks again xD

Hmmm, the Tilt is an ARM based HTC Kaiser, the Shift is a much bigger x86 based UMPC (with a cut down HTC Kaiser effectively shoved in to look after the ARM Windows Mobile side of the device ).
As this is running normal x86 Windows 8 I would not expect to see your old Tilt getting much love from the guide .

I cannot install Win 8 on my HTC Shift.
I follow the guide but using with 4GB Flash Drive.
any thing help or comments please!
thanks
Well... I have installed Win8 on the Shift without any trouble.
Overall I find it too slow for being usable. Neither Vista, 7 or 8 seem to be enough responsive.
I am very disappointed by the Metro UI, it is really slow and even in 1152*864 it does not work quite well.
What do you think about Metro UI responsiveness?
I have a lot of trouble getting accurate touch... it shows a circle but it seems that only a FEW (3-4 ?) pixels trigger... so you still have to find the precise point that will get the touch event.. OUCH !
It is especially painful to hit a corner (windows button, the task bar, and the application bar). I have to do almost everything with the mouse.... *SICK*
Intel driver supports several resolution... AMAZING ! but we need two things:
- change the resolution switch from 800*480 - 1024*600 to 800*480 - 1024*600 - 1024*768 - 1152*864 ... or at least get the ability to change the 1024*600.
- change the rotation : as a tablet... the screen rotation is kinda important...but well it is just a detail ;-)

what is the problem?
4GB Flash Drive seem a little bit too small. I have used a HDD of 20GB with the whole partition set as active.
It is for me the fastest and easiest solution to install Windows on the shift.
Have you been able to go to start the installation of Windows 8 ?
You need to press F12 during the boot to choose which drive to boot on.
The hello world from https://github.com/pjjanak/chromecast-hello-world was good, I was wondering if anyone know of any similar thing for video. I am trying to understand Fling (the receiver HTML part, I sort of get). However his Java and the Ramp protocol is a bit beyond me in the Sender portion. Anyone know of any simple HTML sender/reciever app that I could take a look at?
I realized that it is a lot to ask, but if anyone could help me I would appreciate it. I just want to learn on how to send a simple URL of video to the chromecast, no server hosting, no transcoding. Simple so my little brain could understand and learn.
I am getting my WhiteList, so I am looking for the official way.
Once your device is whitelisted, you can make use of your AppID in the receiver and sender (also make sure to note the namespace you give your project/app).
For the receiver, have a look at this example provided by google: https://github.com/googlecast/cast-android-sample/blob/master/receiver/receiver.html
This is a basic media player handler. This will suffice for what you've requested.
You will need to replace the sections 'YOUR_APP_ID_HERE', and [cast.receiver.RemoteMedia.NAMESPACE] with your AppID and Namespace. Otherwise, it is ready to use "as-is".
The sender is a completely different story.
You mention you want to have an HTML sender (as apposed to an android app or ios app as the sender). This will require a hosted scenario (which, with a little configuration, you can make your local PC be the HTML host - AKA local web server software to HOST the html/js/css. Or if you already have a host for your receiver, you may place these sender items on it as well).
I'll continue this post in a little while. Have to continue working my "real job" then come back to this lol. Sorry.
Thank you, Unholyfire, looking forward to your next post. And thank you for your help on the other post as well. I now have somewhere to host my file online. Just waiting on Google. And yep Sender is harder. I played around with the original sender from google (which doesn't work now), I used mongoose and whitelisted Localhost already so I am familiar with the hosting concept.
