Am on criskelo 11.2 with speedmod kernel 3.13.
All is fine, it appears I have root (titanium etc works) and a check with 'got root' returns an ok response.
The phone is behaving itself nicely and is nice and smooth.
The problem comes when I try and do a nandroid backup using cwm.
It gets a liitle way in and then freezes (forever!)
Things I've tried to cure this...
1) Rolling back to stock GB and then re-rooting, then full 3 wipes, then reinstall criskelo rom.
2) Rolling back to a pre-rooted GB rom, then all 3 wipes, then re-install croskelo
2) Flashing other kernels, notecore etc
3) Installing superuser 3.1.1.zip with cwm and its binary update.zip
4) Installing SuperSU app from play store - it says needs to update binaries, and when I try it just says 'installation failed!'
5) Installing superuser app from play, this time when I try and update binaries it does helpfully say ' remounting /system as rw... fail!'
which leads me to believe this is a root problem, even though no other app is complaining.
6) doing a search on this forum (before you all tell me to do this!)
I have been trying to solve this for over a week now, and it feels like I have read everything on this forum but I may have missed something.
Can anybody steer me in the right direction please?
Maybe you dont need a nandroid backup, it doesnt backup efs anyway.
Could be a kernel issue, or space issue. Not sure.

Cheers, you might be right, but I have always used nandroid before flashing a new rom,
may I ask what you use to backup then, when you change rom?

Have you tried updating cwm? I believe older versions had this problem.

No I haven't Spyder, although I have tried a few different roms whic all have differing versions of cwm right?
which one is the latest then, and how do I install it, would it be an update zip?

I am a heavy flasher and prevent issues caused by restores to get a clean taste of roms. Nandroids I tried, but I havent found a rom I wanted to go back on always, flash so much that it just takes to long.
Efs with a tool in one if my threads, suggestion by Chasmodo. DrKetan has a good toolbox thread in general section.
I manually backup photos and such with a file explorer. Calander/Contacts/email in gmail,
whatsapp and special app stuff also manually transfer folder from sdcard and back.
Messages I dont care for. Neither made calls list.
Occasionally I do restore app if dissapeared from market with Titanium, but only app, not data. I save backups on external. Cause I clean sdcard also.

The latest version for Note N7K is 6.0.1.2.. chek the below link... download option is there
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
jonny, i feel your problem is due to partial root.
could you copy files into system in root explorer ?
did adaway work in applying hosts file ?
for criskelo rom too you should choose CF root kernel during the flashing process, then later you may change to your preference
Thanks baz & nokia, much appreciated.
I am running PA 1.99 now and it has the new cwm (you can tell because it has a grey background now!)
And rraaka, you are correct, I cannot copy anything to system
Not sure how I can get full root back though, I have used Dr Ketans rooting tool many times to try and cure this issue as well as flashing pre-rooted GB roms with Odin.
Not sure what else I can do.
But am starting to agree with baz now, I can do without nandroid (it takes ages anyway) and just use titanium to restore.
Everything is working fine with my partial root (except nandroid) anyway so not sure I care anymore!
Am enjoying Paranoid Android by the way, JB is fun.
I do miss the samsung apps though, I don't suppose those have been jellybeaned yet??
nope not yet, nothing Touchwizz like spen etc.
There is a cwm flashable of samsung apps that works pretty good on cm9, not sure if it works on cm10 or jb.
gaining full root shouldnt be to difficult, update binaries and then you know for sure.
The one that has worked wel for me is the ssu only zip from this post but then again thats on stock stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841288
For custom roms/kernels the ones supplied with it are build in to work out of the box.
Once fully clean install, a nandroid can work but thats fully clean

Thanks baz, am going to go back to the start (stock ICS) and try that link to try and get my full root back, looks interesting.
Ok, I have full root again now!
here's what I think I remember what I did...
Downloaded the first two Su & busybox zips using method1 on the link that Baz kindly shared with me and popped them on my sd card ready.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
Downloaded and flashed the latest UK Carphone Warehouse stock ICS rom with odin.
Rebooted to stock recovery - applied update zip - flashed first the SU and then Busybox zips downloaded earlier.
Rebooted phone to check all was ok.
Located superSU app and ran it to check - and first it said it didn't recognise my phone model, hmmm...
So I downloaded mobile odin from play and flashed abyss 4.2 kernel
Rebooted to recovery, full 3 wipes and rebooted system.
Ran superSU again and magically it updated binaries and for the first time in 2 weeks it said 'sucessful', I was very pleased!
Rebooted to recovery and flashed Criskelo 11.2 again (have gone back to this from PA until things are a bit more stable)
Restored all my apps from TB all good.
Checked Adaway and it was more than happy to replace host file, and root explorer is also happy.
Cool

hello
im on 2.3.6 now and fancy a change because when i click phone or messages it keeps closing and its starting to do my head in.
which rom should i go for?
could you guys point me in the direction of a good guide were i can flash with odin.
iv flashed both my phones a few times but im still a noob
thanks guys/girls
CyanogenMod (7) was fairly simple to flash and it was my first rom on the phone. I'm currently on Team ICSSGS' rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
The latest release was pulled pending wifi fixes, but I'm using it and it's working great for me.
Just need to be rooted and running CWM to flash it.
was looking at that before
ill wait till they fix it and put it back up
how do i flash it.
i dont have a clue i only know how to use odin. and to be honest i think my 3 year old son could work it lol
does anyone know a good rom that i can flash with odin no messingvaround that looks something like this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460786&highlight=2+3+6
just looking for something a little different but stalble as well
I think for the majority of the roms now you need to be rooted and have CWM installed. CM7 is a very nice rom, and not hard to install. It runs 2.3.7 iirc, and worked great for me.
Wiki for installing:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
i flashed my phone with another rom but didnt like it so i flashed it back to the value pack 2.3.6 jvu and then rooted it with this http://www.androidauthority.com/root-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-android-2-3-6-xxjvu-48441/
but i cant uninstall all the stock apps with super manager app. last time i flashed it i could do it. but didnt use that guild and cant find it now.
so as its not rooted i cant flash with the one you have mentioned
is jvz better?
I never ran 2.3.6, I went right from a stock update at 2.3.1 (iirc) to the 2.3.7 in CM7. You should just install CWM using Odin, do a full backup using Titanium Backup and a Nandroid backup in CWM. Then flash anything you want to try.
Also, for backing up contacts, I've read not to use Titanium, use an SMS/Contacts Backup... Titanium has worked for me though.
Not bothered about backing my stuff up. only need my contacts there on kies
might try a flash with clocks recovery when i get home.
i like the rom im on but i doont have full root access as i cant delete atock apps like i could before. i need to delete them to change file format to exr4. says i dont have room if i don't delete them
I all ready have cwm so do.i.just download the cm7 zip file and extract it on my internal memory card then reboot into cwm and flash
Oops double post
Flashed it but it runs really really skow looks good tho.
search continues ha ha
Kies still connects to your phone with custom roms and such? I was lucky if it worked with the stock firmwares.
Did you do a full data wipe? CM7 ran pretty quick on my phone. Maybe try SetCPU to speed things up a little.
Titanium with root access can remove stock apps too.
ye i did a full wipe.
i tried clocking it to 1200 and still ran slow.
ICS ran a little slow as well.
flashed a few now with cwm getting quite addictive.
would like to try a few more but mega uploads comes up with some security thing saying its been removed blah blah blah
MegaUpload was shut down a little while ago now. Should be lots of Roms listed in the forums here, with active downloads I would hope.
Finally got things up and running on CassieXL GB ROM. I did not feel secure on the ICS ROMS with the weird Kernel. I find it odd that all the active threads in development are for ICS or CM9 ROMS.
1. What GB ROM are stable and highly regarded? Cassie XL thread was closed after I flashed it!
So I wanted a good Nandroid. Powered off and started 5.0.27 CWM. Backup yields:
-messages about mounts?
-error while backing up boot image! SD Card space free xxxxx (there's plenty of space. I tried external as well as internal.
-/tmp/recovery.log copied to /sd or something
2. Cassie installed CWM Manager. Does that use the same recovery as vol up/home/power? Is CWM Manager app only compatible with certain kernels? Cassie installed Franco Kernel-9. CWM Manager v3.0 lists current kernel as CF-Root 5.0.
History:
New phone with GB
PC Odin LPY (felt unsafe... but really liked it), Su installer, CWM Installer
PC Odin CF Root Kernel
CWM flash Parnoid Android (Missed some Note things and my eyes hurt)
Triangle away
Flash Casie LC1 based ROM
That included superuser, but I ran an app that said I needed busybox so I used busy box free from the market (stericson) and the app works fine (Google Voice Full Integration). The busy box free app says symlinks applets will not be replaced in the free version? Busy box installer also states multiple versions available... fairly sure I used the default 1.20.0.
To be honest, I don't really understand what busybox actually does. But I know I need it and it's usually included in the kernel/ROM/
3. Did I create some kind of incompatibility between my busybox and rooted kernel? Titanium says: OK (BusyBox 1.18.4-Tatanium from app). Bottom Line: How do I make a nandroid?
4. Should I stick w/ Casie's inclued Franco Kernel-9? I've heard of a -10 version, but the development thread is way deep with a bunch of LPY ROMS!
5. While I'm at it, I'm not yet up to speed on modem options yet. Casie put me on LB2 when I flashed it. Seems to be working ok, but I have to toggle data sometimes.
Thanks for the help. I would like to make this a learning experience.
Howdi.
So you had gb stock. Did you make a backup of this before lpy.
I would flash a directly rootable gb rom see dr k thread.
Do that then install cassie xlr rom. Then flash franco ten yhats all you need.
Lb2 is fine but you can try any gb modem which suits your region.
If you want hassle free base then xlr v x is proven. If you want summin fancier then rocket rom or lightning rom are good choices

Haven't the faintest idea why that happened, frankly. I think I would try to flash one of the pre-rooted Roms to go all the way back, like this:

If you get into bootloop after the flash:

When all this goes well, flash whatever you like from CWMR.

CWM Manager is just a graphic interface for your CWM Recovery. Manager uses all the CWMR functions to carry out whatever you tell it to.
And it lists your kernel as CF-Root, because Franco is 100% compatible with CF-Root.

Can't complain. It's an ICS equivalent of Cassie's; you get a barebone Rom you
can customize to your liking.
I used that rogue app Busybox Free to uninstall busybox. Took a long time.... removing a buncch of symlinks?
Nandroid is running now... so at least I'll have some good GB DATA.
Link above for Franco kernel is dead. Current thread is all about new LPY based project. I paid him $2 for the Franco app.
Will flashing that kernel also give me busybox back, and symlinks?

Got my Salsa yesterday, and used the great guides here HTC DEV- CWM route..all working great, custom roms are a little full for me awaiting new & faster SD card to try those again.
So reverted back to BigBearEvo nice post of Stock with root, weirdly SU doesn't seem to be allowing root access to anything, and often FC. Hrmmm am I missing something here??
any help, v.much appreciated
Try flashing root.zip via CWM, and see if that helps.
Option 1- Did you root the phone before installing the ROM ?
Option 2- Did you wipe and flash the ROM hoping for root access ?

hrmm, strange, I already tried flash root.zip late last night
and ...err yes to option one
and well option 2!
no matter the FC are more of an issue tbh, I'll just rip apart a custom one and make it a little lighter
thanks for your help
When you say well to question 2 i would assume no. Then that's the reason why its not working. It's conflicting with the previous rom. All my stock with root is .......stock with root.zip applied. That's all.

In continuation to what BB has said, if its conflicting. Try 3 wipes mandatory and then install ROM, set-up and then examine if any FC issues still persist and then report.
When I tried I was rooted before and then I did the wipes and it was up and running. As BB has said root.zip has been included with that ROM.
I started out by trying to update my dads phone from 2.3.5 android on his i9000 I used odin to root and install the cwm I tried a kitkat rom first and it didnt work right so I had a bit of trouble anyway I have eventually managed to get hellybean 4.3 flashed and running fine..
Before flashing, I backed up his call logs his sms and his contacts with titanium pro. I thought I was safe to go and backed up.
Now I cant restore the contacts, I dont get any kind of fail, it says to reboot but still they are not there.
I also cant restore the sms messages, they are all there in the messaging app and I can see the messages and message count but when I click to see the full threads there is nothing there like I have never received a message from that number. Also when I send a text I cant see that one either only in the previous list that shows all messages.

Try this fix...
Hey, I assume that you tried restoring the old contact app and messaging app from stock 2.3.5 to your newer AOSP Rom. If so, it's most likely not gonna work this way with Titanium Backup. The apps from the stock rom are rely on TouchWiz that is used by Samsung on all stock roms. I'd try to flash back the old stock rom with root access, restore with Titanium Backup and back up again with another app, e.g. SMS Backup & Restore from the Play Store. In addition, you can save your restored contacts to a google account or make a vcf that you can import on any AOSP based Rom. After doing this, you can flash back your Jelly Bean Rom. Just make sure to save your all backups to external SD everytime before flashing, so that you won't lose them by flashing over another Rom.

Ok that sounds plausible, where would I get the stock rom from? I was on 2.3.5 and it was bloated with orangeware I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I'm thankful for your input, hopefully I'll be able to get this sorted as the phone was so wasted on that old OS.
Many thanks.

You can find most Stock Roms on SAMMOBILE.com http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9000&pcode=-1#firmware.
Just enter your carrier/country in the list to find the right one. However, you have to register at this website to download them and the roms are not pre-rooted. You have to flash them with Odin. So maybe, for making this easier try to find a already rooted Stock Rom that matches your old version and is flashable zip for installing it via CWM Recovery.
Thanks again for your reply, I thought it was the phone that got rooted and all the roms were the same, I tried a stock one via ODIN last night and got stuck in a bootloop thats when I put my current rom on the device. So confused right now. I hope to learn quick though as this is my dads phone so I'd be happy with anything on it, I have the HTC One though that I'm hoping will be fantastic for customisations

Your welcome.
(PS.: Sometimes, your phone gets stuck in bootloop when flashing different android versions because the partition layout or the bootloader change between newer and older android versions. Then, its necessary to flash the same Rom twice.)

As you are coming from jelly bean so don't forget to use pit file with re-partition option clicked when flash via Odin
Hi, what is a pit file, I actually formatted the phone completely successfully installed the stock Rom with a stock Rom for Odin, and then rooted it again with Odin and a cf root file. Then I installed titanium pro again and got my data restored and backed everything up with super backup, installed MacKay 3.9.9, I had to reboot the phone and then go back in and install 4.3 gapps and then installed super backup again and my backups restored beautifully, nice clean Rom and running very smoothly fathers happy, I'm happy. Time to check out kitkat on my HTC One I think!!
Many thanks for your help @zegovernator your solution fixed my problem. Thank you I learnt a lot in this process.

pit stands for partition information table. It partitions your phone in accordance with stock gingerbread.
Where do you get pit files from do you use them together with the pda packs I use with Odin too?

Usually they come along with Odin. You might search it in folder where you unzipped the Odin software. For the Galaxy S I9000, there are only three pit files available...
512.pit, 513.pit and 803.pit ... This relates to their release date:
(2010-05-12 (12th of May 2010)
2010-05-13 (13th of May 2010)
2010-08-03 (3rd of August 2010))
Actually, it doesn't matter which one of these you flash with Odin. The difference is that there are a few small changes in the size of the two system partitions. But in all versions, both partitions add up to the same amount of storage on your device. Most commonly the 512.pit is used here in Forums.
Hi everyone, this is my first post here on xda but i have been observing and following XDA forum for quite a while now,
Now recently I tried to install Origional CM10.2,
Steps i followed were
I had 2.3.4 ( i did installed CM9 almost an year back but then odin back to stock for reasons i dont remember now)
First i Flashed Speedmod kernel via odin 1.7, and then flashed glitch kernel zip using the recovery that came the speedmod kernel,
Wiped devlik cache and went on to install CM10.2,
Everything went fine till i noticed that i was not getting any reception and after googling a bit, identified the problem as efs folder corruption!
I immedietly flashed back to 2.3.4 using oddin and that solved the problem, and my fone was getting the signals on stock 2.3.4,
Following instructions from google, I used EFS recovery softwere to backup my EFS folder,
and then followed the same sequence to flash again to 10.2CM, but here come the tricky part, EFS pro didnt seem to work on CM10.2, i have everything installed perfectly, debugging mode is on, still cant get to restore the efs folder!
I even tried manually copying the backed up EFS folder and putting it in system folder using root explorer etc,but that didnt seem to work, I changed the permission to Read/write aswell, still it says operation failed!
EFS pro was my best hope but it just doesnt work, tried a newer verison of it(newer than the one that i used to backup the efc on GB),that opened but didnt have my device in supported list, and neither was showing any backup!!
This is what i have been doing for past two days
Now I am back to 2.3.4,and IMEI is working fine now.
and additionally just to check whether this happens only on cm10.2 or other versions as well, I flashed Cm10.1 aswell as cm9, same problem there aswell
(As far as i remember ,last year when i flashed CM9,it worked fine but was laggy so i flashed back, only thing i did differently was that i didnt install any kernel)
So any ideas how i should proceed now?
I would thankful if someone can help me ,
and sorry for the long story,i wanted to give as much precise info abt problem as possible!

Were you rooted when you tried to manually restore your efs folder? It should let you change it if you have the right permissions.
I would try to make a manual backup of your efs folder while you're on stock GB and try it again on the ROM you wanna use if you lose your IMEI again. Perhaps try another ROM as well, see if you get the same issue.
I have had problems with losing my imei after flashing to cm10 variants as well. In the steps that I took in this video I didn't lose it and I haven't had anybody else report that they have in the comments.

Arent Cyanogen Mods are already rooted?
I used the File explorer that was included in CM10'.2 and in settings i changed its permissions to ROOT ACCES.
Still i cant copy anything to EFS folder.
To be on the safe side,i tried Rooting Cm10..2 with Vroot, one click softwere and it showed that my phone had root Permissions!
Still I CANT WRITE ANYTHING WITHIN SYSTEM FOLDER,root explorer says that I dont have Root permissions, even after i rooted with Vroot!
I am confused

I would suggest trying with another file explorer. There are many on the Play Store (I personally like Root Explorer but there are free options).
