Hey
I know it may be dumb to ask but is their a need to sync Facebook or social media apps with your phone? I'm Abit confused of the benefits? I have Google contacts synced to phone which i think will sync my new contacts so I'm fine with that but everything else is it really useful or is it better to have them auto sync turned off for battery life...
Cheers

I dont turn on my sync still i get the update in facebook, google mail, apps, and yahoo mail. I dont know what is the purpose of sync?
Its better to turn it off for added battery life.
That's what I'm thinking but I'm scarred to turn off Google as I want my phone contacts always backed up. That's the only one I have synced at the moment.

set those that can to push and you safe battery, rather then synch
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
What's push and is their a option for that??
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
yep when checking settings in email and accounts I think there are options there. At least for Exchange mail. Gmail its already push, dont think you can change it.
Always just check every setting within app as wel, Facebook has push for direct messages I think.
synch is old school, poll server, updates found download, repeat proces every few minutes
push, not entirely like blackberry but close, servers sees email and sends it to phone to download. Hence push.

Basically I sync all my contacts and photos with my google account so it will never be deleted unless I do
Syncing is to exchange the things between two accounts EG. Contacts & Google and if you lose the things on one account you can recover from the other account you synced by enabling the sync option again or you can delete on other also by syncing again
Its up to you
Hey
Thanx everyone for the advice. I think having Google contacts is a must just incase I add new contacts etc and I've synced my dropbox But apps like Facebook and whatsapp and twitter are so not needed so I've taken them all off. I can't understand why anyone would want to sync twitter or whatsapp lol just ludacris.

No. It's push or off - that's the only choice you have.
Use the stock Email/Mail application if you want more control, rather than Gmail.
Another Gmail question without having to open a new thread, does anyone know why when i delete emails on my phone they are still there when i check my gmail on my laptop?

Turn off auto-sync and background data under accounts and settins. In Froyo and other mods, turn of data which will still allow you to receive calls and text messages but no ip stuff.
Gmail deletion on you phone and laptop will be delayed based on your connections. Usually within 5 minutes your phone and laptop should reflect each other.

No mate i think your geting a little mixed up here, what is happening is that when i delete emails on my phone they still show up when i check my laptop (they show up as being read) what im wondering is why when i delete emails on my phone they don't just delete and i have to delete them when i go on my laptop, i wouldn't imagine it has anything to do with sync or the likes, is no one else having the same trouble?
Hi All,
I am trying to set up the Exchange sync but I only want to sync contacts and calendar without email.
Is this possible?
Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
Kinda. Only solution i believe is to set ur sync to never push emails jsut always manually pull. Only suggestion i can think of.

I have created Facebook account and it's working in socialhub but I couldn't get the contacts to sync with device. In GB there will be an option to check whether do or do not sync contacts. But I couldn't find it in ICS. How to solve this?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
go to your contacts and hit settings. then accounts. Then check off the "sync" icon next to facebook
^^ Copy That.
Else you can do one more thing. Reinstall the FB app. Once I got stuck in somewhat similar thing like that.
I found that my facebook application which was restored by titanium backup didn't actually sync well with contacts. so had to reinstall.
I checked it and its in green color. When I go further it shows only messages and calendar. It didn't show up contacts. Any idea?

I'm talking about inbuilt social hub which lets the contacts to sync with Facebook account.. Can I re install that?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Why don't you use the fb app which is AVAILABLE in market. It also syncs in the same way.
Sure it will work.. But I don't wanna pile up with apps. Social hub has to do this job and I wanted to do it. Actually when I was GB I'll remove all social hub related apps (twitter account, linked account, even default mail app) except Facebook account, still it was syncing contacts flawlessly. Now I wanted the same. Does ICS doesn't have that capability??
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Should I remove all Facebook items from ICS and install third party apps from market?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Well I think you should wait for some more time till a solution comes out. I had the same problem with SocialHub. I chose over FB Market App since I didnt have time & wanted to get my contacts asap back. :/ Still will send you any info which might be helpful on this topic
Thanks.. Just now Google it... It seems there is a bug in ICS that stops sync contacts particularly in contactsprovider.apk. We need to add some .xml file it seems. Which is too tech for me so m gonna search some other option for this.

back up to google is on... could that be the cause of this problem? A quick check in xda shows that I am not the only one.
could be, but not sure, you can turn it off and test it just in case.

Same exact problem for me. Can you please share your ROM configuration. I am on Crash ROM v7
think you need to check your google contacts and remove duplicates there.
Thats a good idea, you can merge contacts via comp browser. Or remove them there if they are there. Then possibly switch of after duplicates on phone are removed contacts sync.
Could be the culprit. Best to check where the duplicates are stored before trying by opening duplicate and checking which account it is saved under.

Gents, i really do think this is a bug. I too have the issue only with my work exchange account. The issue wasnt there before the latest German rom LRK. I have tried removing the account and recreating it but it happens again......
Can you others with this issue please post the rom version.
Also please dont suggest merging contacts as that isnt a fix to this issue
Ok, was just eliminating possibilities

Hey guys!
Don't know if that is possible on any ROM but for me (when I still was on a "normal" ICS ROM.. currently I'm on MIUI searching for a good ICS ROM) it worked out kinda like that... (On MIUI thats not possible...)
I don't remember very well how the option was named but if you go to your contacts and press menu one of the options on the bottom brings you to a list where you can choose from which source you want your contacts be taken from... Like SDCard, SIMCard, Google Account, Facebook, etc... just choose one source where you know every contact you need is saved and there you go.. You don't have any duplicated contacts anymore...
But maybe I'm remembering wrong and it was on the stock GB ROM from Samsung... Sorry guys it passed some time since my MIUI flash so I can't remember very well... But hope it helped somehow...
Guys the problem is only with exchange office 365 account, a corporate one in my case. I don't even have google contacts syncing. Everything in Outlook is great just one item on calendar, and just one contact.
The duplicates are only on the Note. I am on Crash ROM v7 4.0.4.
Maybe 4.0.4 ics is the problem...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
Not necessarily. I have an on premise Exchange 2010 at work, not O365 and I have the issue.

Are you on 4.0.4?
maybe previously retained items are maintained, In that case switch off sync, make backup of outlook items, so incase anything goes wrong you can reimport if 365 has that opportunity.
Then set sync one way to phone on phone, and delete all contacts and calender items on phone. This could be done automaticslly not sure, when delting sync acount in accounts. Maybe from there you can delete data to, Then setup synch again, check if its push and if thats not supported there are any options regarding full synch on every synch. Also switch off option to allow duplicates to be created if its there.
This could work, try it and report back

I am using the simple email app included, Gmail is disabled. Using arhd 10.1 but this problem was here long before with original stock.
I guess I have already tried all possible combinations to have the mail sync, maybe someone else has an idea on how this works if at all.
In settings I tried the smart sync, then each number of minutes, whatever I put in there, the only way to have the mail query the server is to manually open the application. For instance, I send myself an email from desktop, my ipad picks it up in a matter of seconds, I mean the fu$#er is in sleep mode, cover on, then I almost instantly hear that notification sound. The One however, I could wait all day, no sign it knows about it.
I have 2 email accounts configured, yahoo and Gmail, I also tried to add one at a time, nothing seems to help.
Thanks for any idea on how to make it work or any suggestions on a third party app?

Smartsync takes time to build a database of data about your usage and when to check for email. For Gmail the best bet is the Gmail app, which will get almost instant push notifications.

I'd rather be using only one app for my email accounts - - the stock mail for instance.
It's just that no sync mode seems to work, be it smart or not

like the guy said above. smart sync needs to build a repour before it will know when to check. its not having information pushed to it like the gmail app is. your best bet is to use the 2 separate apps since each individual app has the ability to push emails immediately while HTC's smart sync or manual sync is just basically timed sync-ing. its just that smart sync is timed to how the phone learns your usage?

As I said the manual mode doesn't work either.
I am going to try k9 for now..

Okay, I think the problem might be elsewhere: the k9,same as mail doesn't seem to sync either. I have tried this over wifi and data, in power settings the sleep mode is disabled, I even disabled power saver.
Does email synchronization works for anyone excepting gmail users?
I am going to enable gmail, see how that behaves with sync..
Sent from a pizza
Manual mode as in your in the mail app and request it to refresh? And the email still doesn't come through? Not sure then.. I used smart sync for a while then I found it to not update fast enough for my needs. But it did always work.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
The mail app syncs over wifi, I found out. Yes, it took a while (set it up to check at 5 minutes.). However, it still doesn't work when screen is off.
While on data only, the whole sync is very conservative. Unless I open up myself the mail thing it doesn't bother to refresh. In fact, the only thing synchronizing over data is weather from BW widget, but even then I am afraid it only refreshes itself when opening the screen. Ah, and Google play, I get notifications over mobile data as well.
I mean I used to want this conservative data behavior when on 100mb data plan, however now I have 3gb to spend and having trouble with email notifications?
I suspect there might be a misbehaving app will try reinstalling everything and one app at a time..
