Finally Rooted! - Nexus 7 General

It took me to 3 am to finally get going (due to my own screw up). I'm currently on a 16GB Nexus 7 rooted, unlocked, and running Cyanogenmod10-20120824-NIGHTLY-grouper. It really runs great, I simply rooted to get CyanogenMod sadly...I don't really know what else to get when rooted. This is my first Android device and obviously first time rooted. If you guys can give me suggestions on fun things to do with it that'd be really cool. Here's a screenshot of what I have now.

If anyone can also help me find this clock widget, that'd be really awesome!
I used this tool to root/unlock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837401
Anyone else running Cyanogenmod10?
Forgot to add I have the 16GB model. I got it with free shipping and no tax at MacMall. What a deal. Would've costed me close to $300 to get it from Google Play directly.

hmm.. took me four minutes to fastboot oem unlock, fastboot a custom recovery(twrp), flash a custom rom/kernel in that recovery, and reboot. no toolkits needed for any nexus. congrats though :silly:

I'm a newbie, didn't really know what else to use. I'm actually pretty decent with adb now. Actually, now that I think about it, I didn't use the toolkit. It failed so I used the video: "Tutorials:Root & Unlock Nexus7 Using Mac" on YouTube.

Can anyone please tell me where the advantage in rooting my N7?
(my Desire HD is rooted for a reason. I'm a seasoned Android flashaholic and know why I needed root)
It's lighting fast, does everything I need it to (don't need Samba server at all), and is running the latest firmware from Google.
Would love to know why.

I had no reason for it either, I mostly did it for more extensive customization and peer-pressure reasons. I also did it for those few apps/emulators that require root that I'd like to use.
To be honest, I see no point in rooting your Nexus 7 if you're already happy with it. I just wanted to be happier.

Im rooted to run Paranoid Android, but if you need to ask then most likely you don't need to be. Btw why on your home screen do you have 2 Facebook and chrome icons?

A few reasons why I rooted mine:
-To use my PS3 controller wirelessly with the Sixaxis controller app
-Backup/Restore apps with Titanium Backup
-Mount USB drives with StickMount
-Mount my NFS share with Cifsmanager
If you have no reason to, leave it unrooted and enjoy the added security

Rooted mine for a boost in speed, the kernels, and customisation of aokp along with theme chooser and stickmount
I also took a few minutes to do a fast boot oem unlock haha, all these toolkits are not good for our knowledge

Besides, in a few years, the N7 wont be supported by google anymore, and you people will all want to root to get android 12 zuccini or some ****

Oh for sure. My first 6 months with my Desire HD I didn't root because it was perfect as is. After that I rooted to get more. I think it might be cool to have a root installation of AVAST on my N7. Maybe even an app like Quick Boot giving me a one touch reboot instead of POWER OFF. then POWER ON. I don't see a point to a custom recovery or nandroid capability unless I'm flashing custom ROMs.
I'll have to deliberate with myself a bit more. Thanks all for your feedback!

[Q] AOKP and CM clarifying questions

Hey, guys. I'm relatively new to the custom ROM scene, I've been using MavROM for a bit, and it was pretty sweet. But recently it's started crashing in some larger applications (plants vs zombies for example. but that's neither here nor there).
I suppose first I should clarify that I have a Verizon Droid 3 XT862 with Hashcode's Safestrap 3.10 installed. (which is really cool!)
I did some googling, and many suggest that I give AOKP a try. I downloaded KEXEC-JB-aokp_solana_unofficial_Nov-04-12.zip, KEXEC-cm-10-20121103-UNOFFICIAL-solana.zip, and KEXEC-cm-9-20121108-UNOFFICIAL-solana.zip. But here's the thing that confuses me, I've tried all three of them, and they all seem to run fine, but they all seem exactly the same. I was under the impression that these custom ROMs contain no added bloat or unnecessary apps, but all three come with an NFL app, and Blockbuster app, and a few others I can't seem to remove. And in the case of KEXEC-JB-aokp_solana_unofficial_Nov-04-12.zip, does the JB in the filename mean that it's meant for JellyBean compatible phones, or will it upgrade my phone to JellyBean? My phone still says it's running android version 2.3.4, and looks exactly the same as the stock GB OS it came with out of the box. So what's so JellyBean about it?
Am I missing something? Also, what's the difference between the versions I've tried? They all seem exactly the same in terms of cosmetics and functionality, but at the same time aren't bringing anything to the table that my old stock ROM didn't do.
Sounds like ur still booting into stock rom. You have to change rom slots in safestrap.

You're right! Thanks! That didn't occur to me, I had initially tried installing it using safestrap 2.10, but I guess I needed 3.05.
Another question, I now have AOKP installed in my second slot, and it boots fine. But I'm not able to access the play store, and I only see options to setup my Mail and Exchange accounts, but neither of them will let me hit Next to progress to the next step after inputting my password. I'd like to add my Google, Facebook, and Exchange accounts to get all my contacts back, but those don't appear to be options. I chose the Nova Launcher if that makes any difference. Was there a separate app package I was supposed to install with AOKP? I read that the CM series requires a separate package. Is AOKP like that?

Introducing Batakang ROM for the Verizon DROID RAZR HD and the Atrix HD. Both devices run fine on the Verizon DROID RAZR HD firmware, and only require 1 ROM for both of them. Batakang ROM (test 12) is build from Hashcode's stock ROM and updated to the official DROID RAZR HD Jellybean by myself. Credits go to Hashcode for his stock ROM and his Safestrap 3. Without him no ROMs would be possible on this device!
Changelog:
12/2/2012 - Test 12. Updated base to official DROID RAZR HD Jellybean.
12/3/2012 - Test 13. Added busybox. Added OTA Update Center support for SS3 auto-updating by dhacker29.
12/12/2012 - Test 14. Added init.d support..
Swtiched from Superuser to SuperSU to fix root issues. Wipe if coming from Test 13 and before!
12/12/2012 - Test 15. No more included Gapps. Flash the 4.1.2 Gapps after flashing Test 15. Do NOT update Google Now (Voice Search) unless you like blank screens on it.
12/13/2012 - Test 16. An 'official' BatakangROM Gapps package is now used. Fixed hopefully all issues with force closes on previous test. Play Store working right away, Google Now works... as always let me no what problems.' Also, TabletUI will no longer be supported officially. You have to change the build.prop line for it yourself starting from now on. Uploading the same build twice just wasn't working out.
12/13/2012 - Release 1.00. CPU Sleep removed (wasn't working). Tethering fixed by default(maybe). Changed version name out of Beta
Known Bugs for DROID RAZR HD (as of Release 1.00):
[If Tether does NOT work out of the box: Download SQLite Editor and change line 67 (entitlement_check) of [Settings Storage > settings.db > settings] from a 1 to a 0. Reboot. WiFi tether and USB then should work.
You tell me.
Be on Jellybean on the DROID RAZR HD (Non-Dev Edition). This can be the leaked or official.
Make a ROM Slot in any ROM slot.
Please go to SS3 main menu.
Choose 'Wipe' and then 'Factory Reset'.
Install the .zip (flash it!)
Then flash the latest official Gapps for the BatakangROM.
Reboot into the ROM.

Evidently you need to restore a backup to the ROM Slot of your stock ROM before flashing. Adding this to the instructions.

Did you check to make sure you had root on your stock rom slot? I should probably re-read your steps up to this point, but as long as
you had root before flashing this to say rom slot 1, you should not have lost root. Are you using OTA rootkeeper? Have you tried opening
it and toggling temp un root? Are all the boxes checked, specifically the one that says "root access gained"??
Typically, when I use OTA, i restore root, then go into SU update the app, then update binaries... after that I'm good to go.
Noob here..
I having some problems if i should flash these roms and i need to confirm the next steps that i think i should do (my device is already rooted)
I got a ICS Stock from Telcel and i want to get batakang but i was reading that you need to flash from a Jelly Bean ROM, so the question is what i need to do to get batakang...
Should i start unlocking bootloader??

Assuming that you're NOT on a dev unit... there will be no bootloader unlocking. If you're rooted, you need to install OTA rootkeeper, protect root, then unroot... install the JB leak from this forum in the stock android recovery. Reboot into the JB leak restore root, install safestrap... backup stock rom... create rom slot, restore backup to rom slot... flash batakang. Got all that??

Well this rom is compatible with both the RAZR HD and the Atrix HD, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

But HD and ATRIX are both Verizon phones? I just know that CM10 needs a specific ROM for both XT926 and XT925 so there has to be a difference.

[Q] How do I proceed now that I've rooted?

I've followed a root guide (not able to link due to account restrictions), however I am not sure whether I have rooted correctly (Superuser has been installed via the root). I'm a beginner in rooting and thought it would be straight forward (due to the number of tutorials around), but I don't know how to proceed now.
My basic objective is to install jelly bean with no issues in usage as the owner isn't very tech literate. The tutorials I have tried to follow thus far have had some steps which aren't possible in my circumstance or certain steps which aren't possible due to a change in the app.
If possible I will appreciate it if someone helps me, whether here, or on skype/teamspeak; preferably on the latters as it will speed up the process and I am quite time restricted. If possible I don't mind completely resetting the kindle to its original software and such and starting again just to be sure If I have rooted, but I don't know how to do that.
Thanks in advance

Thats to Root; I've already rooted (assuming from the video when it says you can see the superuser app)
Well if you have rooted right go to your browser and search for an app called Root Checker. It does not require root. It checks to see if your rooted right. If you are not rooted right the app will say so but if you are rooted right you get a message saying "You have successfully rooted your device." Hope I helped you.

Ok, I've now installed the play store and disabled ads using this VERY useful tutorial (thanks prok!). Is there a similar tutorial on how to install jelly bean on it now?
Well the best rom out there right now is Unofficial CM10.1 from Hashcode. Yes, you could install a different one but Unofficial CM10.1 is currently the best in my opinion.

You have a locked bootloader. There is no way around this, no ifs ands or buts. You simply cannot flash custom ROMs or recoveries. That's it, end of story as far as CM, CWM, AOSP and such things are concerned. That being said there is a sort of recovery called SafeStrap which you can use to make nandroid backups, flash mods and STOCK-BASED roms, but it's not a true custom recovery in the sense that we had been used to, because of this locked bootloader nightmare.
So how do I do this and how safe is it

It's perfectly safe as long as you follow the directions. First install BusyBox from the Play Store and run it following the prompts, it's straightforward. Also make sure you don't have Xposed framework installed (if you don't know what that is or aren't sure then you don't have to worry about this detail). Make sure in your settings you allow installation from unknown sources. Download the .apk file from the thread I linked to in my last post (v3.75) and save it somewhere on your phone. Run the apk file on your phone, following the prompts. It's probably a good idea to reboot once the installation is completely done. Note: assuming you install it successfully, at boot your phone is going to show a little unlocked padlock icon saying "custom" with the Samsung logo, this is normal and not to be worried about. Additionally, whenever you boot up, you are going to be brought into the SafeStrap splash screen where you are given the option to boot as normal or enter "recovery". If you leave it be it boots up like normal in about five seconds. I only mention that to make clear, every time you boot up you are given the option to enter "recovery" which is kind of different from CWM, however, you can just let your phone sit for the extra 5 seconds or so and it boots up like normal.
There's a more concise list of directions here however I would recommend against using that specific version because it is outdated.

Sorry for being unclear. Use this set of instructions (where it says HOW DO I INSTALL SAFESTRAP? in the first post) but download and use the v3.75 apk file linked to in this post. The sets of instructions are essentially the same, I just thought the older ones were more thorough.
Thanks a lot for your help. U have been very helpful.. what is the best and most stable slot rom I can use.. my issue is this " my s4 active when ever I make or receive calls I don't hear anything through the the phone.. even when I put it on loud speaker it's completely with no sound.. my loud speaker work because my phone rings and plays music.. even when using Skype and Facebook calls I can hear clearly.. only when making normal calls it's soundless.. so I wanted to try a different rom and see if that would solve my issue.."

I'm glad I can help you, xda is all about learning and I like to pay it forward. I completely understand your concern with the sound issue, that actually scared me away from installing any roms on my active, I'm still on my stock rom. Unfortunately I can't really tell you much about the few available roms for this device.
I really miss the look and feel of cyanogenmod (loosely referred to as AOSP or stock android), not to mention the performance improvements. That's why I read up and learned how to de-odex the stock ROM, which gives you the ability to then decompile and modify system apps. Somewhat intimidating stuff at first, but I am (maybe was) a total n00b and I'm starting to get the hang of it. If you really want to learn how to hack and mod your phone while stuck on stock rom, this thread will get you started, a majority of the code is the same.
For a couple of easier modifications, replacing the stock touchwiz launcher with another default launcher like NOVA launcher gives you much more control of the look and feel of the homescreens, icons, etc. and I like to use it to disable/tone down screen transition animations, freeing up some system resources. You can use titanium backup to uninstall preloaded system apps that you neither use nor want, again freeing up space on your phone. This is called de-bloating, here's a list of apps safe to remove:

Sorry if the debloat list has Verizon stuff in it, I obviously got it at Verizon S4 thread. You should be perfectly fine removing any AT&T apps, I certainly did haha.
Now that you've got SafeStrap, do yourself a favor and flash this mod. Just download the Galaxy_Mod_Ultimate.zip and install it in SafeStrap recovery. You should see marked battery life improvement within a day.
Works better but I need a rom to install.. and am lost

I know your post is old. But you can flash custom Roms that are touchwiz based, using flash fire.

You're right, I should've been more specific in my wording, although at the time of my post there were no ROMs to flash on this device (even TW-based) that were stable enough for daily driver use

There is though. It's called SickAsHell, it works just fine for me, and has been my daily driver for a while.

I'm aware, I meant when I posted the post you're referencing (11 December 2014) there were no good ROM options available. I'm also using SickAsHell, it just hasn't been out that long, certainly wasn't back in December of 2015, let alone 2014. If you want I can edit that post, I just didn't think anyone used this thread any more

If you would like to try the new version of WizCyan ROM for I537 has been uploaded and you can get it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66216132&postcount=82
Once I get a confirmation that this is working well, I will create a fresh tread for I537.

To all having signal problems

I too used to have signal problems with this ROM. The network signal used to drop off within 2 minutes of rebooting the phone. I erased everything, flashed 4.4.4 NC2 stock tar using odin, installed safestrap again and then installed this rom. After installing this rom (and any mods you need), flash N900A_OC1_ALL_Other_Stock_Partitions.tar.md5 using odin from the custom rom section "Note 4 port 5.0.1 - DarkLord rom v2.2 N910F BOB4 by Samsungviet for N900A" (not allowed to post links since my no. of posts<10) and then boot into this rom, avoiding now the possibility of a modem conflict with NC2. It turns out that when you upgrade to this rom from NC2, for some reason, the baseband remains NC2 whereas everything else is upgraded to OC1 and so I think this was the reason for the network drops.
[Q] ~~~ Would anyone mind breaking it down in simple terms what I must do coming from rooted nc2 to get this rom installed... I have oc1 kernel... I have nc2 flasher... I just don't understand the concept I guess. Thanks in advance
New report everything still works great, but the LED light just keeps randomly blinking, anyone else having this problem?

Flash the nc2 flasher then without restarting it go straight to safestrap. Boot to recovery, clean 3 times everything but your exdrive, flash rom than kernal, reboot. Set your apn to att settings.
That's what I did, the only thing crazy is the LED flashing randomly.
Awsome rom! But is there any fixes for the camera (crashes while holding the focus) and NFC (not switched by togle) except the flash on / off in Safestrap?
First let say Thank you. I finally have a room that I can use the GPS with.
Now my problem is that I can not connect to my gear s the blue tooth connects and the a get the gear manager connecting to gear but it never connects..
Please help

The blinking led is in and out of data. I think wifi.
My new problem(s) my wifi keeps going on and off.
5 random reboots throughout the day.
Is download booster not working? I've been downloading and streaming and I don't see it being utilized.

I have the same rebooting issues after this flashing great rom.
My fix is to use Odin 3.10 to install N900A_OC1_ALL_Other_Stock_Partitions.tar.md5 at AP slot. Not sure if this is the case applying to others.
Here are my steps to refresh this wonderful rom.
I hope this can help.
1. Odin back to 4.4.2 . Then root with towelroot apk and install supersu and busy box.
2. install safestrap to wipe all data except sd card.
3. In safestrap, install DomPop_URv2.2.3_ATT_TEKHD.zip and SM-N900A_N900AUCUEOC1_KERNEL_Recovery-Flashable.zip
4. Odin N900A_OC1_ALL_Other_Stock_Partitions.tar.md5 at AP slot
booting issue
DomPop URv2.2.3 Note 3 n900a
i noticed after a couple failed boots that if i reboot in airplane mode and wait till it is loaded it is fine after returning out of airplane mode. then everything works great. The phone reboots about 5 seconds after launcher starts if i don't. Anyone having a similar issue? I originally noticed that the crash would happen after the location icon appeared in the status bar,

U. powersaving mode
When I'm in ultra power saving mode my alarm clock don't work. Is there a fix for that? Other than that problem I greatly like the rom. Thank you so much
I'm absolutely loving this Rom so far. Great work. I've not seen Lollipop look this good!
So, many people mentioned the constant resetting. I too experienced that. Only after flash. It would load up, be fine a minute, then freeze and reset.
After a while, I dunno, half an hour? It stopped resetting and I've not had a problem since.
Had a problem with not connecting to the network for a while too... but once I got the APN sorted out and turned off the reporting thing in About, it worked fine.
So, question.
Anyone have a fairly comprehensive list of what is safe to freeze/remove out of this Rom as far as stock apps and such?

I agree, this ROM is very very nice. I had to manually enter APN, even though I had the box unchecked, but once I did that, everything else has been good, and battery has been nothing short of phenomenal. I usually get home from work with about 35% battery running Alliance, with this, I'm usually at 50 or more.
I have the same question about what to freeze/remove. I've blown away the flipboard stuff, Health, the gear stuff, everything seems to be OK. There's a whole slew of "samsync sync" stuff that seems like it oughta be able to go, every so often I freeze something, and see if I notice any problems. But I do the same 15 things with my phone every day, so I may not notice anything really bizarre, or some odd interaction.
Anyway, my compliments to the developer, this has extended the life of my phone significantly.

Fix for Netflix comes from TEKHD's thread in Tmo Note 4! One could try the build prop edit or go to System/Vendor/Lib. The file is called liboemcrypto.so, can be renamed to liboemcryto.so.bak or delete the file either way. One could do both options, so here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...tekxodus-n4-urv1-4-14-15-note4-t3082085/page5.
If you don't feel comfortable about doing system edits look here on XDA for Netflix v3.3.3. This was newest but older version I could get to work before I found the the correct fix in the above thread.
renamed liboemcryto.so and now Netflix is working fine !

Appreciate your help ! Renaming liboemcryto.so does fix Netflix !
Unfortunately , " Google Play Movies & TV " still can't play movies....
But I can live with that as long as Netflix is working fine.
