Hello,
I'm currently living in Chile and apparently Chile released the version 4.0.4. I tried updating my android version through kies and the phone updater and no luck :/ My phone is rooted and the kernel is [email protected]#2. I'm not sure if the inability to update is due to the fact I used a kernel from another country other than Chile (I think I used an Indian Kernel). Is there a way I can go back to the my original kernel and unroot to update normally? I also have the urge to unroot my phone since my music player has been crashing too often and feel that the problem originates from the rooting.
Note: I am a very new user and I don't know most, if not all, terms such as flashing.
Help is very much appreciated,
-Kathy
Why don't you directly update it from here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Download the rom and flash it via mobile odin pro or pc odin As simple as that
Thank You! But...
Is there a way I can unroot my phone? Like going back to how I got my phone? Why isn't my phone able to update normally?

When you flash a rom using pc odin,u will be unrooted
Download the rom from above given thread and flash it using pc odin, you will be automatically unrooted
U cant possibly update due to a different version of kernel

When I flash my phone do I need a Pit file? Will this wipe all my music, apps, contacts, etc...? If I use a original chilean rom then my phone will be unrooted right?
Sorry for asking so many questions >.<

You don't need PIT files. Just Select rom file under PDA tab. No need to change any option. Just Start Flash.
And it will not erase your data on sdcard (internal or external)
Cheers
You need to backup your contacts, msgs and apps
Hope I am not to late, would be best to make efs backup before proceding, so you can always return to chili working rom. Its a backup of e.g. imei which is not easy to recover if accidentally lost.
How see toolbox thread dr ketan in general section. You need root for that. Save in multiple locations

Hi guys,
For the first time I wanna root my Note and would like to do it cleanly. I would like to root my Note, use custom ROMs and be able in the future to come back to a stock ROM which is upgradable via KIES.
My first question is to know if the process of downgrading to an older firmware could corrupt the EFS folder. (using PC odin)
2. Will it wipe my phone? In sammobile they don't specify if the older ROMs are wipe or non-wipe.
Thx
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
1- it shouldnt do, i have downgraded using pc odin without an issue
2 - get a non wipe rom fromthe list in the sticky in the dev section
Thx for your reply, I would also like to know:
1. If after rooting the older rom my phone will be upgradable via (recognised by) KIES.
2. If the answer of the question is YES, then what kind of back up should I do in order to be able get my phone at that "state" later on, after having tried other custom ROMs.
I'm trying to be more cautious because with my older i9000, I couldn't get it recognised by KIES after flashing different custom ROMs. My EFS folder was corrupted (empty indeed) and there was unfortunately no way back in my knowledge...
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
it might be but if you update via kies you will lose root
Could somebody else give me a more convincing answer?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Yes you can root your Device. Here
Just make sure you are in rootable ROM, in case if you are not in rootable ROM then u have to downgrade ROM via PC Odin.
Download rootable Stock ROM from Here
In the above Dr. Ketan's Thread he mentioned the rootable and non rootable ROMs
after Downgrading and installing CWM+Root flash any Custom ROM
You can get back to Stock ROM again without worries. Just Flash Stock ROM which is available for your country via PC Odin. (You get warranty too)
If you do everything correctly, then nothing goes wrong.
They are many ROMs available in above thread and Dr.Ketan marked some ROMs as Wipe or Non Wipe.
I've downgraded using this KL3 firmware (india)
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/137391605/31899b9/N7000XXKL3_N7000ODDKL1_INU.zip.html
I don't know why but my phone is no longer upgradable by KIES. It shows "Your device does not support software upgrading via KIES"
Anyway, next step is rooting
Better news, after the downgrade, I rooted the phone using this method:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJjh6gi0Spw
It rooted my phone without any problem.
After, I did a complete backup using Titanium Backup then backed up my EFS Folder using the "root explorer" app (copy and paste the folder) and via the desktop app "ESF Pro" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546
After that I upgraded to my original firmware LB1 using Mobile Odin Pro
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997&highlight=root
ROM: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/147259547/5483373/N7000XXLB1_N7000OXALB1_DBT.zip.html which is a non-wipe ROM.
I'm so glad that now the phone is upgradable via KIES, it shows that I've got the latest firmware.
If you upgrade via kies, you'll lose root. so in essence, once you're rooted, whatever kies says doesn't really matter, as you'll most likely always be using mobile odin or cwm from that point onward, assuming you want to keep root of course.

I cannot agree more with this...Don't bother with Kies now that you're rooted. Why wait for OTA/Kies updates when you can get any new Rom here at XDA a day or two after it is released?
Removing Kies scheisse from zips is the first thing I do before flashing new Roms. Needless to say, it's been removed from my PC ages ago, and replaced by Sammy USB drivers for transferring files etc.
In a word, forget Kies, you're in better hands here at XDA.

But if you update it with kies/OTA, you will lose Root. So update using CWM/Mobile odin only.

Exactly.
Even it appears on XDA before OTA, as usually OTA appears few days later to Kies release.
I understand all you're talking abt. I would probably not need to update my phone via KIES anhmore. But it could prove to be important when I want to sell the phone. I would like the new owner to be able to get updates via KIES or OTA.
By the way, after the root I have frozen many Apps which keep my ram free now and I assume that battery life will be better. Everything seems to work fine just HD widget doesn't work, it's my favourite. It says that there is not Internet connection or something like that. Could anyone know what it's about and how to fix it?

How do i get back to GB? I really hate battery drain on ICS (have tired airplane mode and screen on before unplug etc.) and just want a stadyer battery life via GB and a safe ROM to remove files and download stuff without constant feeling of brick...
Im running XXLPY and I rooted using touch CWM and BusyBox
I put the CWM.zip and BusyBoxInstaller.zip on to my SD and went on my GB recovery and flashed CWM touch version and used it to root = does it mean i have partial root or full and can i just install Rooted GB via PC Odin and be good with it or do i have to first unroot XXLPY and then revert to GB and then root it coz i like CF3D and couple other root required apps..
Thanks!

Hi all.
Finally got a Note and love it, but while I wait for official ICS here in the UK, I'd like to keep stock 2.3.6 GB but safely root it.
There's so much info here, it makes me a bit nervous in-case I pick the wrong method.
I have this:

and would like to know what method I should use to root.
Thanks

Use Dr. Ketan's method!
Go here and follow the instruction for your Rom.
Edit: Just saw your picture, you have LA4 not LA6 on your device, that means that you can flash a Direct Rootable Rom!
Thanks for the reply but I'm a bit confused, my Note shows Build: GINGERBREAD XXLA6 as does the Kernel, so are you saying that it's the Baseband version : N7000XXLA4 that I should be paying attention to?
Also according to Kies it's PDA:LA6 / PHONE LA4 / CSC LA1 (XEU)
yes la4 is the rom version you are using, you will need to downgrade to be able to root
which rom do you suggest I downgrade to and still allow update via Kies?
Will the downgrade via Odin up my flash counter and give me the triangle?

go look at the root thread, there is a link for kj1, which is non wipe rom so all your settings will stay in tact
no it wont give you the triangle because it is a stock rom

I bought the Galaxy Note N7000 yesterday and I have exactly the same android-, baseband-, kernel version and build number. The only difference is I'm from the Netherlands and using Vodafone.
Now I've been looking for a way to root it, but I also wondered which XXLA# I should use for it.. I saw the reply of the downgrade (ofcourse) but I am wondering: those r for Poland and Germany... Or doesn't that matter and I can root it anyway w/o bricking the phone?
Post november roms are difficult to root, best optuon is to go to pre december 2011 rom
Or go to ICS and use cwm. Zip and superuser. Zip method

Well yeah, I get that point, but the thing is: I'm kinda noob with this. To be honest: my roommates rooted my galaxy s for me, but they did it so fast that I didn't get half of what they did..
My eventual goal is to learn how to root a smartphone and upgrade mine to android ics. My current android version is an unrooted stock 2.3.6 and I wanna go for a rooted ICS, but I already start to wonder now if I can upgrade my phone to rooted ICS immediately from the 2.3.6... Could u guide me a little in this?
By the way: sorry if I ask some pretty obvious questions that might have already been answered elsewhere on the forum, but I have been looking all over the forum and just don't know which info I should use from which posts anymore..
If you want ics then it is very easy.
First flash ics and then root it., ics is directly rootable.
I recommend first hard reset on gb rom for clean installation.
All informatikn regarding ics update n root, u can find on first link on my signature.

Well, I thought the safest way to get me ICS on the phone was through updating with Samsung Kies. After this I was planning to put CWM in the folder sdcard/external_sd and Busybox on the internal sd, but...
I got it updated now, but I lost the folder external_sd.. I can't create a new folder with this name either.. I don't actually have an external SD card, but if I remember it well, I didn't need it either. I have seen the folder external_sd for sure in there..
Edit: Bought an external sd card and did the root like u said, but without flashing back to GB. It worked! Thanks alot for the clear walkthrough! Hail dr. Ketan!
i have a unit with UBKK1 baseband version, which i learned was a brazilian rom. Now i currently live in the Philippines and i cant get an ICS update thru kies here because of the rom. i went to the samfirmware site and found a Philippine rom, my question is can i flash this rom over the old GB brazilian rom using odin without any problems? my phone is currently unrooted thru the one click method, it was previously rooted thru the same method.
Ive also read you can change the country code, if i change it to the Philippine code and update thru kies will it work??
if you change the csc then yes you should be able to upgrade with kies tho i always download the rom i want then use pc odin its just a personal preference
Why don't you download Stock ICS ROM directly.... And flash it using pc odin??
can i download any stock ICS rom and just flash it with odin without any problems?
Yes you can.
Ive just now rooted my note on brazilian rom (stock GB rom), if i upgrade to the taiwanese rom using pc odin will i still retain root? and do i need to uncheck the usb debugging before proceeding with pc odin?

I would buy Mobile Odin Pro from the market, and flash this rom from here http://www.hotfile.com/dl/156659405/b6c3080/N7000DXLP9_N7000OLBLP6_XTC.zip.html . This will flash the correct rom and keep root.
thanks for all the helpful replies, i was able to successfully flash taiwanese ics firmware update using pc odin. and you guys are right, i did lose root. now the only problem is how to go back on root as i've frozen a lot of apps on titanium backup before and those apps aren't showing after the update. it seems like flashing over to a newer firmware didnt reset the phone. all my previously installed apps are still there.
Guys, after updating to ics, i couldn't install apks using astro file manager or even the stock file manager.Pressing the install button won't work. Previously on gb stock rom everything works. Is this an ics bug?

1 no problem at all, use the app (might give you a warning message, just ignore)
2 network locked phones stay network locked, network unlock phones stay network unlocked, regardless of firmware flashing. You cannot network lock/unlock a phone by flashing different firmware. You'll get the lock activated when changing sim to another mobile company, otherwise you're good.

You don't need cf-root to use it.
