I' ve seen few threads about this, but never the solution...
I'm using HANDCEND SMS. When you open handcent, go to settings, then application settings, and finally by clicking default messaging application, new menu pops up in which you need to select ALL(SMS & MMS).
This worked for me. I don't have counter any more on lockscreen. I don't know if other messaging apps have this option .
You can also always change the lockscreen to pattern or something else, but for me that's just annoying.
So with regard to the count of sms on the lockscreen, most likely you can not do anything, I will only cancel messages by opening the application, after which no more I view them.
As regards the exchange of lockscreen must try GO locker, very nice.
...
I want to unlock my phone as easy as I can, so don't need go locker. And going into default app to reset the counter it's annoying, so the solution that I mentioned above works best for me, and I just wanted to share with others...

Hi there,
Can someone tell me how I change the default app that is used to open text messages?
When I downloaded ChompSMS, I chose that as the default app, but I'd like to change that to Handcent SMS.
Thanks very much,
Menu>settings>applications>manage applications>chompsms then select the clear defaults button
Thanks very much - so how do I go about setting a new default?
the next time you open a message or anything related to messaging, your sammy will ask which app you want to use.. just check the "use by default for this action"

You see, that's what I hoped too.
But I've tried clicking on the Messaging icon and not getting a pop up box. It's just opening up in the standard app.
nope.. not the messaging icon.. because that messaging icon is a shortcut for the built in messaging app..
it must be a messaging "action" like clicking on a "send sms" button on the phonebook...
and also.. if you are referring on the messaging icon on 4 icons at the bottom, you must replace the default messaging icon (shortcut) with the handcent icon..
^instructions: click the applications icon -> menu -> edit -> drag the handcent icon/shortcut to replace the default messaging icon/shortcut
Ah ok, that makes sense. Think I've got it now ... cheers
One last question - is there a way of reverting the icon used for 'Messaging' to its default state?
you mean returning the default messaging shortcut at the bottom? yes you can, you'll notice that when you've replaced it with the handcent shortcut, the default messaging shortcut went to the applications menu. just do the same instructions to replace the handcent shortcut with the default shortcut..
since you'll be using handcent, disable the notifications of the default messaging app & use handcent's notification..
How can I disable notifications on the original notifications? I dont have any...please see my attached pictures...after settings, there is no notification settings for me to uncheck...ive transferred Handcent to the 4 main home button on the menu. but on the original messenger on the applications where i transfered it, it still has a number that its still receiving messages
curious tho. i've tried to drag the handcent app over the messaging app, once in the "applications" page. and it does nothing but let me throw it away..i desperately want to change the "messaging app" also one of the 4 apps at bottom, and make it the handcent. please help! thanks

If you don't see the Edit icon when you click the menu button, make sure you select Customizable List, then Menu, and you'll see the Edit button. Now drag the new icon the the menu bar.

Hi,
Hopefully a very answer to what should be a simple setting.
I've migrated to the HTC Incredible S from HTC Magic. The trouble is when I receive a text message the icon is shown but the message itself is also shown on screen. I can't find an option to get rid of that.
All I need is the icon showing me I have a message.
Thanks
Go to Mail -> Settings (by pushing the button with the 3 strips) -> More -> Settings -> Notification settings -> Activate Email notifications.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. However, it's not the mail notification I concerned about but text/SMS notification. I just want to disable the message showing on my screen when a new message is received.
I can't seem to find an option to remove this.
I think your barking up the wrong tree there jkolner, sounds like he is taking about the preview of a text message on the lockscreen....
I have looked for a way to remove this myself, and as far as I can tell the only way to stop it is to use a replacement lockscreen like widget locker. seems a bit of a security oversight in my eyes, should be a setting.
Arh... i use GoSMS so i don't have that problem.
The only thing i can find is Message -> Settings (by pushing the button with the 3 strips) -> Settings -> Notifications.
But that don't solve the problem :-(

You don't have Handcent SMS installed by any chance, do you? That will show any new SMS as a pop-up on your screen by default, but you can switch it off in the settings.

If you use the default lockscreen and the default messaging app, when you get a new text it displays the content on the lockscreen. I think this is the problem he is talking about.

Ah, fair enough. I usually customise the hell out of any phone I get as soon as I switch it on for the first time (and I cannot stand the default Messaging app), so I am oblivious to this particular issue.
I have ChompSMS installed. Again this does not provide a setting to disable this kind of notification. I'll have to look into installing a different lock screen.
I'm just surprised that this is not a setting that can be switched off.
Hi there.
I have one problem with my LG Black, i've got installed NOVA V7 ROM and from market I install Handcent SMS and set is as a default SMS app. I uncheck in oryginal android sms application option "notifications" and now i got only one notification on my statusbar when I get a sms and thats all right, but when someone send me message i get on lockscreen notification that i've got 1 message and when i tap on this notofication and slide down it goes to the oryginal android sms app. This is very annoying becauce after i get sms I got 2 notifications, one from Handcent SMS on my statusbar and the other one from oryginal SMS app on my lockscreen, and if i go to the Handcend and i read the message this one dissapear but the second one (from SMS/MMS app) is still on my lockscreen.
In a nutshell: When i get sms i have to go to the 2 sms app because i get 2 notifications, one from handcent and one from stock sms application.
My question is: how to change this slide down opption to handcent sms or if I can't do this, how to delete this option ?
Thanks a lot for help.
If you're not madly in love with the default lockscreen you can find out there some pretty alternatives and that should solve your 2 notifications problem. I used to have that problem too but I simply changed to widgetlocker which, btw, it's more powerful and customisable and you can have whatever lockscreen you want, without those 2 notifications. If you are rooted you could also delete the sms app but i'm not sure about that. Linking it to handcent or go sms or anything i don't think it's going to work.
For double notification message on status bar, you can disable notification from stock messaging settings.
And for notification message on lock screen, it's build with stock messaging, and there's no clue yet how to disable it.

Hey, I have solved this problem. But don't know which app killed it. I have "autostarts" and "no lock". I think it's autostarts. But mind you, it is an anvanced application.
On option "When SMS Received" you'd see both, Messaging and Handcent. So tap Messaging and disable it. "After Startup" option, disable Messaging as well. You could disable Messaging as well or other unnecessary apps that autostart on other options. Like Gallery, Music etc. HTH

Autostarts app. Not on the phone itself. You have to download the app.
Autostarts by Michael Elsdorfer. Find it on the market.

Any idea how to disable integrated SMS messaging app? Its somehow bugged and when using Hangouts as default SMS app, it still shows icon badges with new messages count. So even when I read SMS in Hangouts, it still shows count on app icon. And even when you open msg in internal app, it doesnt mark it as read, so count doesnt disappear.
Edit seems like quite problem, because sms app is integrated to dialer/phone app. So its not shown anywhere in system separately, so I cant controll what it does. And it doesnt allow to disable notification numbers on icon...

this problem is solved in actuall hangouts settings..
Check it or replace default messaging app in settings..
Got latest hangouts, its default SMS app. Done this one first.
But still messages goes also to internal SMS app and as they arrive, they are marked unread regardless what I do in Hangouts. So MSG app shows icon badge. Only way is to delete SMS in Hangouts, then they disappear from internal app.
Pinch the home screen and pick More Settings, then find Badge app icons. You should be able to turn them off from there.

Switched to nova launcher because of this, works fine too [emoji1]
Nova is my favorite and beats the EMUI IOS launcher, I must have an app drawer.
I cannot change the default message app at all
Like the title says I don't even have the menu item in Settings to do so.
I have downloaded 8sms and Textra but neither of these or Hangouts will successfully change from the default app. All can read my texts and the text history but I cannot send. I am tired of the default app which I think is poor and also the Android emojis which I cannot figure out.
Regarding emojis I've tried downloading different font and keyboards with iPhone/twitter/Samsung/Whatsapp style emojis but they are all changed into android ones in the actual messages
I have an L09 running Nova launcher with build B145.
Please tell me someone has a trick...
THANK YOU

I disabled the badge icons some time ago when I found the possibility of doing so by chance... now wanted to enable again and I couldn't find WHERE I had done that!
Thank you
With Oreo if I saw a TeslaUnread Gmail notification of e.g. "5" and opened the app to read a single email then closed the app, the badge stayed on the Gmail icon but the number decreased by one to "4". That's perfect. But TeslaUnread has stopped working properly on Android Pie. Nova also has default notification dots but these don't have a message count and are based on status bar notifications so they disappear when you open the apps, even if you don't read any messages.
The standard Huawei badges don't work very well, and not at all for Gmail.
Are there any other notifiers (launchers?) which work well with Pie?
many thanks
I suggest you go into TeslaUnread's settings and disable and then reenable the apps you want monitored. I have to do this after each Nova Launcher update, as it stops reporting unread messages correctly.

This only works once. Then you have to go into TeslaUnread's settings and disable/enable all over again.
There is no problem with the default launcher and notifications...and you also have the option to change badged to unread messages, exactly like you want to...it works very well for me on android Pie(I can see in every app icon the number of unread messages,if I read only one or two,the number decreases, not really sure for gmail,I don't use it). Just go to launcher settings, and change the badge type to unread messages.
