SD card putting all music into LOST.DIR - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

AOKP w/ Devil kernel
I have same problem as these others and can't find can't find solution for this:
"So I've tried everything to get music to stay on my "external" SD card (32gb Micro SDHC class 6, by Kingston). I say
STAY because its syncs fine. But as soon as I try to unconnected it ( I've just yanked it, ejected the drive from
windows then pulled it, ejected it then shut off the phone and pulled it then turned it back on, etc...) it moves 90%
of the files from the music folder to lost.dir. I've done just about everything i can think, heres a list (sorry if some of them seem silly)
unmount SD card, remove from phone, plug into computer, load songs, re-mount = all files in LOST.dir
Sync "USB Mass Storage" Using
Windows Media
VCast media Maneger = all files in LOST.dir
Motorola "motocast USB"
WinAmp
Drag and Drop to folder
sync with the "windows Media Sync" mode not "USB Mass Storage"
Windows Media
VCast media Maneger
Motorola "motocast USB" = all files in LOST.dir
WinAmp
Sync to internal memory and move files to external. = All file in LOST.dir
Now here's where it gets strange, I've done this with 2 different SD cards, (both 32gb one a class 6, one a class 10)
and the same thing happens. I've use both of these cards on 2 different phones (talked to Verizon and they just sent
me a new phone) and the same thing happens. What the heck is going on?"
and this guy:
I'm having issues with music on an external sd card, can anyone advise?
I mounted a 32Gb sd card in Samsung Galaxy 1. I then copied music into music folder on card.
This has been done using Kies and several other times using a usb card holder and Win Explorer - all with same
results...
When I turn on phone, the external media scanner runs ok. I go to music and it only shows approx 16 cds of music. The
remainder seem to be "dumped" into media folder without structure,or alternatively get dumped into the Lost.dir.
Its almost like there's a limit on the size of the memory space allocated to the music folder.
I have used other apps to rescan media. I have also reformatted the cards to ensure no hidden files or attributes.
Also tried this with another new 4Gb card with same issue.
I just got a new Ainol 7 Advanced 7 inch Android tablet (which is pretty cool for cost v's performance).
Unfortunately, this has the same issues as the Samsung.
Obviously, this is due to the same "features" of the Android O/S and its memory mgt of external cards."
I'm using a 16gig card myself and the same thing is happening. Even if I transfer files over wifi and rescan media.
Someone said "I could be mistaken, but I think you may be right about the memory limit in file allocation on that device. I know it's true of some versions of the Android Operating System. The OS wants more storage area for system activity than
or media. Some users solve that issue by rooting their device and manipulating those parameters"
also said "In Unix the lost & found directory is for orphaned files and/or directories. They become orphaned due the OS no longer having the correct pointers to those files.
and "Some tweaks such as sdcard speed tweak and other sdcard related tweaks in init.d folder is causing this problem... Try to boot your phone without them and see if it works"
So I removed what I think was a speed tweak from the init.d folder and rebooted...same thing.
There seems to be from what I've seen, a 1.8 or 2gig limit on media files on the external SD. Everything works great until you add past 2gig, then the rest goes to LOST.DIR. So I tried something, format the SD and copied over 5gig of PDF files, I got the same thing only it seemed the limit was now 3.8gig. So does anyone know how to get around these limits?

adding new music

When I add new music to my sdcard via PC or downloading through the browser it doesn't show up in the stock music app.
I can open the file directly through a file explorer or browser download screen and it will play but it will have no options eg: no repeat or add to playlist
Has anyone come across this? Once I restart the phone it will show up correctly.
I noticed there is a media scanner in spare parts or dev tools but it doesn't help.
mine shows up pretty quick, where do you put the music onthe sd card and how do you dismount the sd card?
Had that problem too, a long time ago. Probably even before I got my Nexus and used a Galaxy Spica. What I did was download songs to my SD card over the network using ES File Explorer. I think Android doesn't really monitor the SD card, all it does is scan when the SD card is mounted. This way, if you use USB to transfer media from your PC, and then disconnect it, it gets mounted again, and the media scanner will run and find the new files. Any other way is probably broken... maybe you can trigger a scan by unmounting and remounting the SD card (from the settings menu)...
I remember there being an application on the market, sdcard rescan or something that did that.
yup, thats normal, if you copy music to the sd through an application. android does not monitor the filesystem for new music files and only scans on mount (which happens on bootup).
but yeah ther was an app for that. does anybody have the name?
free

perfect.
thanks for the mount tips too. makes sense.
or if your rom comes with "Dev Tools" just open media scanner.
Good one, forgot about that.

[Q] Camera recording not playing in Windows7

I'm running a custom rom (Ultimate) and the video recordings I make seem to be corrupt. I can't play them on any of my windows machines (I can play virtually every other file out there). I can't upload them to youtube , it bombs out. Any ideas what I'm can do to fix this?
Is there another camera app that I can get that would fix this?
Will
Will they play in vlc? If so get super and convert em
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Tried it, but Super C couldn't even play/convert them.
Found my workaround/solution: Copying the file to the external sd card and then putting that in my cardreader on the computers DOES NOT WORK. Actually copying the file from the internal to external SD card corrupts it on the phone BUT NOT RIGHT AWAY?!?! Meaning I can move the file to external sd and play it in video player. I put the phone on the charger, went to sleep and this morning it said file corrupt from the same player - I'm using root explorer to do all my copy/paste and it is the latest and greatest. My external SDcard has very few writes/rewrites and has not given me any other issues.
So, to copy to my desktop computer, I have to use the USB file transfer method, which works fine - just seems slower.
Will
Also another workaround is to save the video straight to the external sd card... It seems to work (for now)

external SD

I've recently picked up the xperia z and a 64gb mem card. I'm trying to load my music on my external SD but everytime I do it by album it only copies a small amount of data and makes the music unplayable due to the fact it'll play the first 2 seconds then skip... Any way around this?
Also is it possible to copy the data from games (Nova 3, GTA 3 etc to my external as I wanna keep the internal for apps only?
EDIT: Btw if it matters I'm on .423
Thanks!

No u cannot move apps-data to external (cause android 4.x.x not support app to sd-card)
about ur problem with music u can do this for troubleshooting;
test another sd-card
force stop app (from setting > apps > all)
clear cache
clear data
Format Sd-card (i recommend to do it with unix like ubuntu) (what is ur sd-card?)
:good:
Don't use album to transfer music. Go to settings...Xperia....USB connection mode.... Change it from MTP (media transfer protocol) to MSC (mass storage card). Accept all disclaimers that internal memory cannot be connected and so on. Connect to PC using USB cable. Open ext storage card in My Computer (in case auto open doesn't occur) and transfer any amount of music/video to card by copy/paste or drag & drop. Transfer speeds are faster in this mode, than in MTP...
Dead Cookies leave mo trails...
Or fastest method:
- pull out memory card, put it in card reader and Copy/Paste data from PC
gave up decided to format it into fat32 and works flawlessly with no drop in storage
@x102x96x
I meant the data the game downloads not the app itself I wanna use my external as the storage but last time I used the mod but it screwed up my systemui so I ditched it.

I hope you formatted it within Xperia with it's own format tool from Settings It is highly recommended to do that.

Again i should say NO
the game app will search for its data and if u move them to external it won't find them and try to download again and all ur personal data in the game will lose
> u cannot force game app to read from external memory for data unless have root access or use custom ROM

Can't transfer music onto SD card

I have tried both Media Transfer Mode and Mass Storage Mode, Media Transfer Mode results in errors while Mass Storage Mode first appears to work, I can find all the files I've transferred and play them on the computer from the phone but as soon as I disconnect from the computer they disappear from the card. WTF?
Try with a card reader?
Or you could transfer to the built-in storage and then move to SD using Fail Commander.
Does the microSD card work ok in other devices? I've just tried transferring from PC to phone in MTP mode and the files turn up straight away on my Z3C. This is with a 64GB Scandisk card.
I will check with a card reader, I hope it's the sd card being faulty and not the phone.

The easy way for me to access the SD card without making things difficult is to change the USB connection mode on your Sony Xperia Z3 compact over to Mass Storage mode (MSC). Here is how to get to this setting:
Settings > Xperia Connectivity > USB Connectivity > USB connection mode > select Mass storage mode (MSC)
No special drivers needed on the computer for it to recognize and read/write the micro SD card inside of your phone when plugged in via micro USB.
You will no be able to access your internal storage with this setting, but you can transfer files over via File Commander if needed.

I have the same issue. With the full size Z3.
Really annoying.
I've had SD cards that read fine on a computer but not in my mobile devices. Even between devices (super annoying) so I would try a different card if you have one around.

Hi, I've been using the Wifi-File Explorer app ever since. Still works fine on the Z3C.
Hello, simply use the third-party program to move music to SD card such as iTools, Apowersoft Phone Manager, etc., i guess it will work for you.
Similiar with me
Hi,
I have a Z3C with latest available Android (6.0.1 no root).
Yesterday, I have copied lots of music files to my sd card (sandisk 64GB, class 10). Haven't used the media mode, just attached the phone directly to the pc with usb cable, and selected to mount the sd card only to my pc.
After I have copied the files, and pulled the phone off of the computer, the files aren't showing up on my phone, not even with root explorer.
Can anyone help me what could happen with my phone? Should I just try this again in media transfer mode?
Thanks
Kind of similar problem!
I 've been transfering music to my SD through wifi connection ( using different apps through the years - "portal" at the moment ) without any problem.
Havent really noticed when maybe after upgrading to official marshmallow ( OTA ), what happens is that most of the newly transfered music is just displayed on ES File Explorer, but not on the music library ( same happens with 4 different music apps ) and can't be reproduced. The music that was there before is displayed and allowed to be played normally, but the newly added in order to be added and played through the music library, i have to :
1) eject the sd card
2) mount the sd card
3) clear es file explorer and music app from the recent apps
4) open es file explorer
5) play the specific newly added track though es file explorer player
6) open the track with the music app by clicking it through the es explorer
any thoughts / advice ?

Do you have an app that stops the media scanner from working?
I had the same problem that files on my SD card weren't being picked up by the Sony Music app.
Try settings/apps/show system apps, find Media Storage, Force Stop, Clear cache, Clear data, restart phone, wait five minutes.
This Media rescan app is very helpful and even gives you a shortcut to the Media Scanner properties so you can perform the above task.

aaah! I' m so stupid I was searching for such an option but I missed it. It's been a long time since my first android phones ( pre-Lollipop years ) that i had to dig into settings try find and fix things when root and custom roms were a necessity and every tiny little detail might have alter your android experience a lot.
thanx for the feedback! I already installed "media re.scan" and i am going to look deeper into it a bit later as at the moment i have my music library up to speed.

Move App to SD Card, leaved OBB Files behind

I think i have never noticed before, as this is the first device i have not rooted or installed a CR.
But i have noticed on large games with large OBB files, when moved to the SD, the OBB file stays on the internal storage, and only the apk file itself moves to the SD Card, things like game settings etc.
So it kinda makes it abit pointless having a SD Card apart form Photos, Movies and Music.
My 64GB Card has become redundant until i root / xposed it.
Anyone else noticed this, or found a work around, They removed adoptable storage didnt they?
working as intended.
it's one of Google's strangest choices, to not include what's typically the largest file in the "move to SD" option.
something you could do is manually move all your obb files to the sdcard, and then move them back temporarily when you need them.
or keep less large games on your phone.

Its BS that they still can't manage to do this in 2019..
My tablet has 32GB and I bought a 256GB MicroSD for this to store games. But it's pretty much useless..
I should of went with an iPad........
