Avast mobile security firewall activation problem - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running Crash ROM v8.2 and hydracore 1.7 kernel. My phone is thus definitely rooted, superuser access for Avast is granted. but I cannot activate the firewall.
The error message I get is:
"error applying firewall rules (exit code 1):
dmessg:klogctl! Function not implemented".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled avast mobile security but to no avail.
Not sure how long this has been the case for as it worked when I orginally installed Avast several months ago but have updated the ROM and kernel a number of times since I last checked the firewall was working.
Any ideas how can I rectify this and activate the firewall please?!
Many thanks in advance...

Thanks, but avast is free, a recognised anti-virus software provider, and has 10 million downloads from the play store so I don't think it's a scam!

Make sure Avast is granted in Device Administrators under Settings>Security>Device Administrators.

Avast works with logging, kernel you have has it disabled, which is why you get the error message I think. Someone has posted this already in the kernel thread. Forgot if it worked or not.
You should be able to enable logging by putting line androidlogger in a file somewhere in system, same way as you enable logging in speedmod. Might need to creaye the file first thought, root explorer is pretty straight forward in using that.
That will eat batterylife thought, so think about other solutions for firewall, like patch rom with pdroid or use something like droidwal that doesnt rely on logging.
Sent with a grin (^.^)

Hi OP, I had the issue with Speed mod and your kernel too.
Basically after conversing with Avast support and Speedmod 's Dev, I found that the issue is due to Kernal logging being disabled. This is not the Android logcat. As for solutions, Avast said they cannot do a thing while the Kernal Dev said it is not possible without recompiling the Kernal.
What you can do: go back to a supported Kernal.
Use another firewall software.

Thanks for clear, helpful analysis/options, and to others for their responses to.
Guess I'll look for different firewall software as I like the hydra kernel...

Sorry about the 4 year bump, but since avast v5.9.2, running on Nougat, how come whenever I access the app permissions menu, app locking gets disabled in avast?

VVM/My Verizon/Flash 10.2 all for GB (Updated 7/20)

OK, so I'm putting these up all in one place. This way you can stop asking for them in various threads. I'll add others as I discover need to add them.
My Verizon only works on VZW based ROMs.
6/27 Only works with PlainJane v3 AFAIK 6/27. GB ROMs will need to wait for a new base leak most likely.
6/30 Update - Older version works again. Download MyVerizon.apk for the older version that works on most newer ROMs. the com.vzw.hss.myverizon-1.apk will only work on the MR2 based ROMs.
VVM (visual voicemail) - Works on all versions of everything as far as I know. It also fixes the notification issues that people are having with voicemails on bamf roms. (your account must have it enabled for it to work, $3 a month.) - Apparently doesn't work with the Thunderstick ROM or CM7 1.2. Not sure what got changed in this most current build, but it definitely broke VVM. Thunderstick has some conflicting files baked in that break it.
Flash 10.2 edited for use with hulu.com as well. If you don't use it for hulu you won't see any difference. CM7 users rejoice? Just make sure you don't accidentally update it via market or you'll lose in browser flash video again and need to re-install this.
If you're having issues with a particular file, please post what ROM you're running. I'm trying to narrow down possible culprit ROMs.
If these files help you, don't forget about the "Thanks" button
Enjoy.
6/25 - Re-uploaded VVM.apk since a couple people seem to be having issues with it. I even deleted it off my phone and re-downloaded it via this attachment to check to make sure it went through properly. Since there are only the 2 people commenting that it didn't work out of 100+ downloads of the file, I'm going to assume that something happened on your end not mine (make sure you have unknown sources checked in your application settings and/or re-download?), but re-uploaded and tested nonetheless.
6/26 - Had to pull My Verizon due to an update today that breaks it for us. No current working version known for Thunderbolt.
6/27 - Ok, so the structure is there in the MR2 froyo update (plainjane v3) so I'm putting the current apk up. I need to figure out what i need to strip out of MR2 to make it work for other ROMs.
6/29 - Added Skype
6/30 - Changed Skype File location to Fyels.com for more bandwidth.
6/30 - Re-Posted the older My Verizon APK. No idea what VZW is up to on their end, but it no longer prompts for update locking us out. We'll see how long that lasts.
7/5 - Fixed Broken link for skype. Added bold text to netflix description to make it more obvious that it doesn't work on unrooted/froyo phones...
7/8 - Added Flash 10.2 (is also edited for use with hulu.com) for CM7 users.
7/20 - Removed netflix. It is now natively supported.
7/20 - Updated VVM to newer build version.
8/5 - Removed skype. Natively supported.
Good post. Good idea.
My Verizon app not working on my stock T- bolt. Pop up says not supported on this device. Did you mean all *rooted* Verizon based ROMs?

Hulu plus is not currently supported on the tbolt (hence i won't put it in the op til then). If you want to mess with it, here's the apk. You can manage queues etc but you cannot play video. You will get a "device not supported yet" type error. You may be able to edit the build.prop to get it running by tricking it into thinking you have a different (supported) device but the idea to this thread is to not hack/edit things to get them working.

Not on the market for T-Bolt, and sorry...I missed the GB in the thread title (linked here from another thread).
At the risk of being accused of threadjacking, somebody saw my post and sent me a link for a MyVerizon app that works on a stock T-Bolt. (Thanks Zinsko!) So in case somebody makes the same mistake as me and wants the same answer, It's here

I had my concerns, but my Lookout Mobile gave it a thumbs-up, and it seems to work as it's supposed to. But thanks for the warning.
Tried installing vvm but no dice...tried installing as a apk tried dropping in system app tried renaming it. all I get is app not installed do I need to change permissions?
Anyone have luck with the VVM APK? Can't get it to install at all. Using BAMF 2.1. Tried a straight APK install and just dropping it into the sytem/app folder via root explorer.

And yes, I did change permissions. Would really love to get this working, as I have to use VZW VVM for work. Thanks.
All I do is install it like anything else. Looks like this.
Make sure you have unknown sources checked. I'll reupload it when I get home if people are still having issues. I've installed it on every version of bamf that didn't include integrated Vvm and cm7.

I am very happy that this is thread came out cuz I've been tryin to leave Froyo but those 3 major apps were an issue w/GB and it looks like no more issues. Am on the latest Gingeritis and all those apps work anyway so I'll cnfirm the truth about this thread once I decide to test the other GB roms again. Great thread though OP. Much props to you. If you can somehow make the HTC messaging widget bug leave GB as well, You'd be even more of a hero
When I try to launch the My Verizon app on Bamf 3.0 RC3 it says there is an updated version of the My Verizon app in the market. If I select upgrade, it launches the market, but can not find the app. If I select cancel, it closes the My Verizon app. Is anyone else having this problem?

[Q] Getting OpenVPN to Work

I currently pay for a VPN service called Hide My Ass and it works nicely on my computer. I can use it on my Bionic but I would like to use OpenVPN. I installed from the Market the two OpenVPN Settings and Installer and copied the config files to the SD card. I found it here http://hidemyass.com/vpn-config/ Now for some reason when I try to log in to the VPN it won't connect. If anyone has any input on how to make this work I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
You need a tun.ko kernel module, and based on the word kernel and the locked bootloader I don't even know if that module would even help in any way.
I think this kernel has tun built in... I use vpnc all the time and it needs one too.

OpenVPN will not work with OpenVPN and OpenVPN settings because there is no tun.ko kernel module. Tried this myself and nope, it's not going to work. There might be a way if there is a talented dev out there. I know that the boot has to be signed but I don't know about kernel modules. Beyond the module itself will the kernel even allow you to start a module anyway?

Eclipse ICS 1.2.2, ported by myfishbear, has fully functioning Google Now, with voice input/output included. Just update to the 217 ICS leak and flash eclipse and then flash the google now zip and you're in business
I went with Deodexed/Debloated ROM, and installed the Google Now ZIP from the Eclipse ICS thread. Works great.

I assume you install it through CWM? How is the battery life after installing? Also, do we now whether it is the same version as in this thread or older http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856?

Yes, it's a ZIP you install through recovery. I'm using SafeStrap (essentially CWM). If you aren't using SafeStrap, I do recommend you take a look at it. It's a nice safe way to test ROMs and other things that might be considered dangerous.
I can't really say anything about battery life yet. I've only been playing with this ROM for a couple days. You know how it goes with installing apps, indexing, caching, syncing.. things need a little time to calm down. However, I can't really imagine any of the ROMs being worse on battery.
And Google Now needs time to learn. I've read that Google Now uses the settings for Home and Work locations from the Navigation app, so I set up my work and home locations in there, and it's notifying me with traffic at the appropriate times.
It's probably the same version. 36megs sounds about right. myfishbear has kept everything very current in his Eclipse thread.
Just for reference, I'm on ICS leak 217.
If you want a ton of extra features, than eclipse is the way to go!

Not sure if I did something wrong, but I tried 3 different revisions of Eclipse (including 1.2.1 and 1.2.2). Every time I installed it, I had only 4 of the 5 icons show up at the bottom of the launcher. My corporate email security settings (requires PIN) wouldn't work, and if there are any customization options (like UI settings in other ROMs, or even launcher settings), I couldn't find them.
I've installed numerous roms on other devices, so I really can't imagine what I did wrong.
Boot to SafeStrap.
Make sure SAFE system is enabled.
Wipe Data / Factory Reset.
Install ROM ZIP.
Install GoogleNow ZIP.
Win! (well, win for everyone else...)
I tried Infektion ROM as well. The only issue I had there was the same issue with my corporate email security settings. And the screen rotation bug from CM9.
I tried clearing caches, fixing permissions, re-installing, re-re-installing.
My unsafe system is ICS leak 217, no mods. Works great.
My safe system is Deodexed/Debloated ICS 217 plus GoogleNow. Works great.
Hmm, you should go to the eclipse thread and ask myfishbear if he can help you

My post-count is less than 10. So I'm not allowed to post in the dev thread. Also, it sounds like Eclipse works for everyone else. My fail brings me great shame.

[Q] AOKP and CM clarifying questions

Hey, guys. I'm relatively new to the custom ROM scene, I've been using MavROM for a bit, and it was pretty sweet. But recently it's started crashing in some larger applications (plants vs zombies for example. but that's neither here nor there).
I suppose first I should clarify that I have a Verizon Droid 3 XT862 with Hashcode's Safestrap 3.10 installed. (which is really cool!)
I did some googling, and many suggest that I give AOKP a try. I downloaded KEXEC-JB-aokp_solana_unofficial_Nov-04-12.zip, KEXEC-cm-10-20121103-UNOFFICIAL-solana.zip, and KEXEC-cm-9-20121108-UNOFFICIAL-solana.zip. But here's the thing that confuses me, I've tried all three of them, and they all seem to run fine, but they all seem exactly the same. I was under the impression that these custom ROMs contain no added bloat or unnecessary apps, but all three come with an NFL app, and Blockbuster app, and a few others I can't seem to remove. And in the case of KEXEC-JB-aokp_solana_unofficial_Nov-04-12.zip, does the JB in the filename mean that it's meant for JellyBean compatible phones, or will it upgrade my phone to JellyBean? My phone still says it's running android version 2.3.4, and looks exactly the same as the stock GB OS it came with out of the box. So what's so JellyBean about it?
Am I missing something? Also, what's the difference between the versions I've tried? They all seem exactly the same in terms of cosmetics and functionality, but at the same time aren't bringing anything to the table that my old stock ROM didn't do.
Sounds like ur still booting into stock rom. You have to change rom slots in safestrap.

You're right! Thanks! That didn't occur to me, I had initially tried installing it using safestrap 2.10, but I guess I needed 3.05.
Another question, I now have AOKP installed in my second slot, and it boots fine. But I'm not able to access the play store, and I only see options to setup my Mail and Exchange accounts, but neither of them will let me hit Next to progress to the next step after inputting my password. I'd like to add my Google, Facebook, and Exchange accounts to get all my contacts back, but those don't appear to be options. I chose the Nova Launcher if that makes any difference. Was there a separate app package I was supposed to install with AOKP? I read that the CM series requires a separate package. Is AOKP like that?

seems I don't have root access on cm12. I did previously on 2/2 build then I flashed a 2/4 and it messed up my os so had to format and install 2/2. I have root access to apps and adb in developers options but for some odd reason my apps say I don't have root. What can I do to fix this.

That's silly.
This is something that either works, or doesn't.
As much as I dislike CM, they do have su down VERY well. Its even integrated with appops.
Its also open source. For something with that kind of security implications, I *absolutely would NEVER* trust a blob, which is what supersu is.

It absolutely does NOT require selinux to be set permissive.
Also FYI: what you refer to as "all the stuff" is actually a pretty simple little adjustment to the selinux configuration.
...
CM actually has the whole selinux issue a lot simpler than SuperSU does, since as the system builder, you have the freedom to set your own selinux policies, whereas SuperSU had to hack around existing policies set by AOSP.

All I'm asking is "back in the day", when we first got our hands on Lollipop developer previews, we had to use permissive mode. Over time, through various SuperSU beta's - there was a point where the modifications to selinux were sufficient for *most* apps to not need permissive. Sure, some apps that have not been updated still require permissive mode to be set... So you're saying Superuser does that now?
Personally, I've always found superuser the lesser of the 2 root providers and was a long way behind in the early lollipop days and if they've got to a useful point now, great - though I dare say not without a lot of input from chainfire.
