Wire trick is the only way, it seems. It is simple if you follow and understand the instructions (especially the prep steps before actually doing the wire trick)
I posted this response in another thread...

All the wire trick does is reboot the phone and by pass something so the junoptbear exploit runs... It's totally harmless

Correct it does a hot reboot of the internal memory n hboot to allow the exploit to work no security basically allows it to run the loop hole in the firmware

It is a lot easier then it sounds...trust me.I was freaking out before I did it...then I did it and I was like "I freaked out for that?!??!?"
All you do is run control.bear and touch the two points for a second then release...if you mess up then try again, you cant really brick it by messing up the wire trick (of course there's always the risk but its unlikely)
I actually did it without the video...just used the junipor website or whatever its called...read the instructions there looked at the two points in the picture and did it
Just take a wire (that is covered up until the ends...) And touch the two points when you get to that part...its not hard
you can do it I believe in you!!!

I just got my Vivid Friday evening and last night rooted, unlocked, and S-offed. There really is nothing to it. The main thing I would recommend is to practice a little before actually running the program, that way you can have your wire bent exactly like you need. Still took me three tries, but it works great.

I want to do it. I just dunno where to begin....

The answers have been stated in this thread already, but I'm going to assume you are on a stock, locked device since you seem afraid to try this
1: Read the SUPERGUIDE .http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836 from step one down
2: Use this All in one tool kit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003 to unlock bootloader (you could just go to website as
in step one of SUPERGUIDE but you will probably fell more comfortable with toolkit)
3: Go to step two of SUPERGUIDE, follow from there.
When you get to the Unlimited.IO website take the time to read carefully all info.
Attached is a picture showing the two contact points.

Im not trying to be fuddy duddy, but do not follow intructions on any other website as the devs who came up with up dont condone it. I suggest going to the website, unlimited.IO they have detailed intructions and a nice IRC up to help. They spent like four hrs helping me last night, i just haplen to have a different problem than 99% of others, lol. like how i mean dont follow others videos is like for instance dont use multi insulated copper to short it out, must be single. Um they suggest a piece of cat5 as they said others proved not to work for them. Head over bud i promise youll figure it out with or without their live chat.

Just be careful, like that guy said its timing and practice, just remember basic grounding wen shorting stuff out, other words dont ground yourself to your phone for instance. If u brick theres a way back, if u fry it its a new mobo for you. I build and modify custom psu's it is rather difficult to fry something if u take precautions. But youll never learn or get the confidence to do it if u dont jump in head first. Goto the devs website theyll help you, and really patient too, they do type like a possesed keyboard on steriods tho. Lol

Ok well since you guys won't help him I will.
The quickest way to root your G1: First you need a car battery and some jumper cables. Take your USB cable and splice into it, wire it to the positive jumper cable, now ground the other end onto a metal surface. Next thing is to press the power+camera+home+menu+back buttons as fast as you can, while doing so start humming the theme to MASH and have a friend tickle the battery cover of your G1. Do that for a good 17 minutes. Now unhook everything and rub one out, then wipe the ejaculate onto your screen and try making a smiley face. Last step, and most important......kill a cat while your power the phone on, not a kitten though and preferably a black cat as they work the best.
If you did it all right you will now have superhuman capabilities and your mother will cry when she sleeps at night.
Wow, that exactly how I rooted mine but I failed the first time cause I used a kitten, maybe you should write the guide codani, you might make a better one than me, don't forget to reserve the first 3 posts for the future

What's that? You don't have a few billion dollars? Oh.
@huzi7868: Why the hell do you need root for? Where did you heard this word? What does it mean to you?
HTC prepared the phone that is secured against ppl like yourself so they can't break it accidentally. Believe me it is better this way. You just stick to FB and games and you'll be just fine.

Why do you want root anyway?

the post directly below the screen shot on their facebook says htc one jtag and communicating. That's not hacking.
If I remember right, I used them to repair a bricked HD2. It required being taken apart and the ROM flashed directly to the board. I think that was 40 bucks.
When I got it back the volume down stopped working. They claimed it was messed up when I sent it, which is partly true but it still functioned. When I got it back it didn't at all. They stopped responding to my questions and requests.
They got it working again but were a bit rude.. won't be using them again.

I don't understand why people are so heated about this, they're independent people who get to make their own choices. Android and open source in general have great traditions of devs doing their work for free, but that hardly means that every dev owes it to the community to work pro bono.
If you haven't donated to a dev on your own, you really shouldn't be offended about this.

If you want to understand why people are mad, you need to understand the culture a little better. Go read the GPL (and maybe other related open source licences). I'm not saying that it applies to this; just that open source is no where near as open as most people believe it to be.

Not necessarily, you don't make money if people aren't willing to pay. I can only assume that most people on forums like this are less likely to send there phone out to be s-offed,and just wait until one of these amazing devs posts a tutorial(once accomplished). If you mean they would make more money if they don't, by they are hoping people will brick there devices trying, then yes i agree then they would make a lot of money off of that. I do believe Share is Caring...unless its a completely original idea then charge.

That is the problem. You want to do things that you don't fully understand. Anytime you try to flash something there is a chance it will brick a device, no matter how many others haven't had that problem.
Read up on it and if you feel comfortable then do it.
And it is "know not no"

That's what i meant. Several experienced users hard bricked their phones. You no what I mean?
know verb (used with object), knew, known, know·ing.
1. to perceive or understand as fact or truth; to apprehend clearly and with certainty: I know the situation fully.
2. to have established or fixed in the mind or memory: to know a poem by heart; Do you know the way to the park from here?
3. to be cognizant or aware of: I know it.
4. be acquainted with (a thing, place, person, etc.), as by sight, experience, or report: to know the mayor.
5. to understand from experience or attainment (usually followed by how before an infinitive): to know how to make gingerbread.
no
1. (a negative used to express dissent, denial, or refusal, as in response to a question or request)
2. (used to emphasize or introduce a negative statement): Not a single person came to the party, no, not a one.
3. not in any degree or manner; not at all (used with a comparative): He is no better.
4. not a (used before an adjective to convey the opposite of the adjective's meaning): His recovery was no small miracle.

If interested, you can pm me here, or email me chris20nyyatgmail. Thanks!

Would you be happier if someone here just guided you through it step by step? There are some awesome devs here who I'm sure would be happy to try and help and Gove you steps along the way. Also, there are some very well written guides on here that you can follow, asking questions here along the way and get some info if you are stuck
So if you would be happy doing it that way, we can guide you through it here!
Make sure you have a working laptop and a good USB cable, using 2.0 ports and preferably Windows 7, with working/up to date drivers and adb files
Well 2 problems. I've read the tutorials, watched the videos, and am still not confident lol. The main concern is getting s-off. The other issue is I only have a macbook working at the moment. That's why I figured I'd give in and have someone do it for me. Its not worth risking IMO, I'd rather pay someone with the expertise to do it.
I genuinely appreciate the offer however! I just don't have the confidence. Sometimes things just seem beyond skill level, and you have to swallow your pride lol
I have no problem guiding you over the phone or skype! It is a piece of cake ! If you read the tutorial and just scared to brick your phone, i dont think itll happen! Done it to 5 HTCs!

It is very doable. The tutorials always seem scary but it is very doable!
Well I'll have it Friday I suppose I could give it a shot thanks for the help! I guess I'll post back when I get it and see if/when you're free!
How long is the process normally?

Thanks again. And you think this can be safely done on a Mac?

It's prob easier on a mac than a PC, both Android and OSX are based on linux unlike Windows.
