Flash Kernel or not? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'd like to root my friend's Samsung Galaxy S Plus and install CM9, because he's always complaining about how much trouble he has with his stock ROM.
Now when I install a new version of CM on my own phone (Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro, currently with CM10) I have to extract the boot.img file and flash this first, then go into recovery (the recovery which is included in the boot.img file) and flash the ROM that goes with this boot file.
Is this also necessary on a Samsung? Cause I heard that you just have to install the .zip from sd with these phones, and the boot file will be automatically included..
Grtz!

Just flash the zip and ur good
Btw, heres a good tutorial: http://www.android.gs/update-samsung-galaxy-s-i9001-plus-to-cm9-ics-custom-rom/

Yeah what he said. just flash the zip but make sure its in the ROOT of your mates INTERNAL sd card.

Cool, thanks! And that tutorial is the best I've seen so far so thanks again .
Another question, in all the tutorials I read "To backup applications, SMS, Call Logs and the APN Internet Settings use the following tools: AppBAK for Android apps backup | SMS backup & restore | Call Logs backup & restore | APN Settings Backup & Restore." but My Backup Root does all this (and it's only one app), so isn't My Backup the best option?

the update.zip which titanium backup creates is used for installing titanium backup after a data wiping, for creating update.zip there are many softwares available in xda you just need to make the folder tree and have to flace files in them

I would like to edit the following rom for my tv box :
https://www.cellc.co.za/softwares/update_CELLC_PRD_Cellc_cellc_Secured_4.0.1.115_SB522.zip
The rom was originally signed by SignApk . I would like to remove one application , welcomestb.apk and its associated odex, welcomestb.odex .
The problem is the first time setupwizard is not connecting to server as the server is no longer available. So i can not go past the wifi settings and use the device. More or less i would like to edit the rom such that it doesnt require the setupwizard. I would also like to add a few more applications such as vlc player and media center to the rom . The rom is based on android 4.0.1. Unfortunately it does not have twrp or clockwod recovery. Thus i would like to sign it with SignApk after i am done editing. WOULD U KINDLY GIVE ME POINTERS ON HOW TO GO ABOUT MODYFING THE ROM SUCH THAT I CAN FLASH IT USING STOCK RECOVERY

Option 1: Use Nandroid backup (Root)
Option 2: Use Titanium Backup (Root) for Apps and stuffs. and for SMS/MMS backup there any many Apps available in Market.

But doesn't it restore the kernel and System?
If you do a NAND backup you are backing up the entire OS. So if you restore it, it will be restored to the state you left it in before making the backup. All SMS, apps, call log, everything will be like you left it, including the kernel.
THIS is what you're looking for, and this is what we do before we flash ROM's, so when we want to go back to that ROM we do a restore in CWM. Voila, we are exactly back to where we were. A NAND backup is also a must have in case unexpected things happen - like bootloops.
I always have two or three backups. One of them is the one with the best battery life and stability (a life boat), the other one is CM9 alpha (for when i'm bored), and the third one is the ROM i currently use. This way i can't mess things up. Ever.
Use titanium to backup your sms/mms, call logs and apps.

[Q] Working method for restoring Call logs/SMS to ICS?

I know there are a lot of apps for back up/restoring, but does anyone know any working for ICS? I have tried AppExtractor with ROM Manager, didn't work. The Message-app started to behave strange. Tried SMS Backup & Restore, was able to restore the sms but couldn't not open them.
I'm currently using NovaHD's ICS Rom.
You can restore your messages from /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db and mmssms.db-journal in your nandroid backup (just extract and replace)
And your calls from /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/database/contacts2.db and contacts2.db-journal
(Extract and replace)
Nandroid = CWM?
So, basically your saying that i should extract my backup and the rom, then find these folders extract the backup one to the rom and then zip it again?
Two options
#1 Restore your backup, copy the files to a temp folder on sdcard, flash your new rom and replace them
#2 Extract them from your backup and then replace them
It might be other solutions aswell but these are simple
Nandroid = CWM

just a small mention....file types from CM7 or Cm 9 are not the same with other GB formats....so are not comaptible....be careful with that.
HerrKuk, i'm kind of new to rooting but i need android sdk to do this?!
Sreeprajay, i'm goding from stock rom to custom, should work right?!

Nope, just root and and root explorer (or similar)
You dont even need a computer
Or use nandroid browser from the market : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.goddchen.android.nandroidbrowser

from the stock to custom, it will be prefect...just make sure once you are rooted, backup your msgs and call logs by either apps or by backing the ROM totally....
Hope it helps
So, i installed root explorer, copied mmssms.db(no journal-file), flashed owain's rom, installed root explorer, replaced my mmssms.db file in the rom, rebooted and the SMS-client won't start.
Optimus, maybe this will help you:
This is "backup to gmail"
I have got this aplication (paid) but it`s works on ICS (owain 29)
Take a look on my screenshot.
sms backup & restore works perfectly for me, but no idea on that phone call log
Albatros2605, MoFosis, Thanks for your help guys, but managed to restore my SMS by using SMS Backup+, which copies everything to your gmail and then downloads it to restore the SMS.
Hi guys, I recently screwed the pooch on an upgrade to 4.0.4, and I forgot to backup SMS before doing it. I did a nandroid backup, but I can neither restore the backup nor locate the mmssms.db file in the archive. I tried AppExtractor and Titanium Backup, but with no success.
Can someone help me by telling me where to locate my SMS history in a nandroid backup? Thanks!

[Q] Data backup..

if there is a rom where a fullwipe is needed, then you will get many fc's if you
restore a nandroid data.
but i'll give you the answer:
make a simple backup in cwm and go to advanced restore, there you can choose data

one of the easy way but still you can also try use ultimate backup from market, free and just use it to backup all aplications that you are installing/using on one rom, and when you flash another rom, just use it to reinstall them. The free version all you need to do is confirm manually all installs
How to perform a complete backup for ROM changes:
(0. Root your system if you are on stock Samsung firmware)
1. Backup your apps and their data with TitaniumBackup (click "Backup/Restore", click checkmark icon in upper right corner, select "Backup all user apps"). Do not backup system apps/data unless you have a good reason.
2. Backup your SMS with SMS Backup & Restore
3. Backup your call logs with Call log Backup & Restore.
4. Export your contacts to a .vcf file or sync them to your google account.
Your internal and external SD cards will not be touched when flashing ROMs so they do not require backup.

Once a month or prior to any severe system modification (like flashing of ROM) I always take a Nandroid backup via TWRP i.e. a complete copy of my device's system.
