[Q] OTA / KIES update custom kernel? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Wonder if you can help me.
So have a custom kernel running, but stock ICS.
If I were to get an OTA / Kies update, what would happen to the custom kernel? After the update, would I get stock kernel?
Also, I presume I would also lose root, and would have to re-root (or could I just use OTA Rootkeeper).
Thanks!

your update will fail upon install cause you aren't running all same components of same version rom. Try it at own risk. Even having different modem makes update fail. At least for me
Change kernel back to rom version and update will succeed. Then put custom back.
Ota and you dont have to loose root. Kies then you must be unrooted.

cool, It always failed with me. I concluded it wasn't possible. Probably I was wrong.

Hmm, OK, so there is no clarity then!
I guess I could download the firmware from Sammobile and update manually via CWM or Odin in that case?
If I were to do that though, would that be a no wipe?

Try to follow this link (from doc Ketan's thread) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
You can download the firmware on your specific region, use PC Odin (you wont get the triangle mark in anyway)
There are also guides on that thread that might help you out.. Just read and see if it might interest you or not.
P.S. Regarding your initial post. You will lose your Custom kernel when your going to flash /upgrade to the Official Samsung ICS firmware. The kernel will be replace with the kernel package on that ROM. And YES you will lose root upon upgrading it but nothing can't be fix if your going to flash back the custom kernel again (to gain root) and use Triangle Away to reset your binary counter and clear out the yellow triangle on the bootup screen

[Q] Rooted on KK9 - Can I safely OTA to KL7?

I apologize in advance if this has already been asked and answered, but I did search and couldn't find a definitive answer.
I have a "German" Note which came with 2.3.5 initially, I did one OTA update (to KK9) and it appears that luckily for me, I was still able to use the ZergRush exploit and root it and get the custom CWM, etc.
Now as I sit on KK9, I see that there is another OTA update available to me (KL7?) that clocks in at about 71MB.
With root, custom CWM, and CF-Root 5.0 at the moment, I don't want to lose that in an update.
So, is it safe to OTA or should I download something else and flash it via CWM? If so, what should I download and how should I flash it?
Thanks! Just don't want to brick or loose root.

(From memory only
You can "safely" update: that is, some users have reported no problems but I've already read issues with backup managers not being able to unfreeze apps, boot loops, and keyboard/random apps crashing when you try to open them.
KL7 is a stunning update (my battery now lasts forever). I'm going to root later in the summer once everything becomes stable.

After update, you cant root it with zergrush exploit as previous. Better you download full rom, install mobile odin pro, n flash it with 'ever root' option. So will get root during flashing
Thank you!
How can I confirm that the update being offered via OTA from KK9 is indeed KL7? Is that the most appropriate and current update path to follow? I know there are many different builds for potentially different devices, and I just want to make sure I am on the right path, and am merely assuming at this point that KL7 is the next step for my Note.
Thanks again, your advice makes much sense, and with already being Root and having Mobile Odin Pro, this seems like a much more intelligent approach. I want my device to be rooted, but rock stock and absolutely stable otherwise.
Regards,
-Rob
I can only say 71MB is almost exactly what I remember the KL7 update being. Other than that, I don't know how you can check (alternatively, you could download the update from XDA, apply it, then check for OTAs to see whether or not it was KL7).

So, what if you have CWM installed? Can I use Mobile Odin still? Or will this get rid of my CMW recovery and/or screw something else up?
if you use cwm still u can flash it to kl7, but again same, u cant root it. So using mobile odin pro, u can root kl7 during flashing by selecting 'eve root' n again u can cf root n get cwm for kl7 as you did it b4
Edit : yes with installed cwm still can use mobile odin, n remember u need pro version of mobile odin

Got the pro version. Thanks!
So just to make sure, coming from Stock KK9, rooted + with CWM:
Flash KL7 w/ ever root option Odin Pro
Re-install KL7 version of CWM.
Should all be set?
This is non-wipe too right? So everything should remain in tact?
Exactly, and when v dont select re partition box, it shud remain intact.(here also v dont selecting) But always keep backup b4 these kind of stuff.
Edit: I was able to get my phone flashed and updated to KL8. The process I used I descibed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21153439#post21153439
Ok, I'm using Mobile Odin Pro to try to flash to KL7 from KK5. I have root + CWM in KK5, use Mobile Odin according to the instructions to flash KL7...but I always get stuck at the "Samsung Galaxy Note" boot screen. No matter how long I leave it, it will stay that way. To recover, I have to use Odin on PC to reflash KK5 and then reroot. Any suggestions on what else to try?
I couldn't get flashing with Mobile Odin to work correctly. I ended up getting the update to work by using CWM to flash the KL8 firmware, while pre-rooting. I then had to fix the keyboard issue by flashing the CSC, as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997.
Once I did that, I installed CMW Manager again using the method found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360. With the firmware updated and the radio working (phone wouldn't work in KL7) I just restored everything from a Titanium Backup file and it's all working.

Back to stock GB from ICS

Dear folks
When Samsung released their ICS update I was so exited but it wouldn't update mine since mine has csc lux so I had to wait till they released it for my country.
So the German version came online and I used PC Odin to get my phone to ICS with the German release. (So I flashed it? New to this)
Now I'm assuming that ICS is out for my country OTA or with Kies. So I want to use one of both to upgrade my phone so I have the stock and don't risk anything.
So you've probably seen the question coming, how do I get back to stock GB so I can update it afterwards with Kies or OTA.
Please take note that I'm a complete newb in this.
Thanks in advance!
You will have to use PC Odin to go back to stock Gingerbread.
Go here to find your stock rom for your country and download it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
You probably had to Odin to the ICS version you are on now, so if you remember how you did that, it's the same thing in Odin.
After you have that stock Gingerbread you should be able to check for updates and get your official OTA or Kies ICS.

i'm tired of waiting and with the new asian builds i just wanna update but coming from ios (just had my note for 2 weeks) i don't wanna mess up.so just download stock india rom for example use pc odin to flash and follow dr ketan tutorial to root?how about the modem (baseband), kernel and my unlock?do i have to worry about losing the unlock?thanks
So country is what my csc says right? Cause I bought it in Belgium (where I live) but my csc says lux
You *must* flash a safe kernel first, reboot the phone again into download mode then you can flash your old GB ROM.
If you don't do that, you can trigger the emmc bug in your current ICS kernel and fry the internal memory, unless you're using a CM9-based kernel then you're safe.

[Q] question about updating to ics

hi all, it s my first thread
i have a new samsung galaxy note never rooted, never updated, on gingerbread 2.3.5.
I want to know if i must root my device before doing this to update to ICS .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
If you want stock ICS you can just flash the required files using ODIN, If you want a custom ICS ROM then you will either have to flash a safe kernel and cwm (some kernels have cwm built in) then update that way, You may also have to flash ICS through ODIN, then a kernel, then a rom. read the requirements in the OP
If you let me know which ROM you want i can try help you through the process.

There´s no need to root your phone in order to update, but if you flash it thru PC Odin you will get the yellow triangle and will raise the binary counter. Besides, with the hardbrick bug around maybe is not the best idea to update now. You should hold on a bit until Samsung releases the fix for the bug....
thanks
i want to install stock ics rom, so i do like in the guide without rooting my note on gingerbread (before updating) ?
I upgraded to stock ICS by just flashing it via ODIN, Dont worry about the binary count or yellow triangle if you get it, It can be removed. I have it but wont remove it till i need to send it back.
But as glevitan said, Its best to stay on GB if you feel anxious about upgrading, There isnt a huge difference between the 2 anyway.
If you dont care and you are a dare devil who laughs in the face of danger, Just be sure to read read read all the guides.
If in doubt..............ASK !

[Q] Update Help !

I wasn't able to use my phone for a couple of months due to some reasons and now when I come back I see that the 4.0.4 had been launched way back. I also get a notification to update my phone and it downloads a 110mb update which fails every time I try it. I have 4.0.3 on a rooted phone.
My question here is, which kernel is needed to successfully update to 4.0.4 via OTA? I've tried DDLR6 and DDLPA
If there is any other method please guide me through it.
P.S - I'm from India.
Thanks in advance!
rooted phone will not be able to install OTA.
download the DDLR9 from sammobile.com and install it via PC odin,.or mobile odin
donot wipe when on stock ICS kernel
I found Dr. Ketan's guide to updating to DDLR9. Will it update me to 4.0.4?
Also, Will I loose the root if I use Mobile Odin/PC Odin?
using mobile odin.. if you select, inject SU, enable everoot, and inject mobile odin, then you will retain root.
when you select the rom file, it will fill up all the partitions, then manuall change the kernel to speedmod and flash.
this way when the new rom gets installed, you will have speedmod
I still didn't understand if I will get updated to 4.0.4 or will I still remain at 4.0.3 with DDLR9?
Yes DDLR9 is 4.0.4
Okay! Thanks for the quick replies and the help! :]
sure mate. see you soon with a changed signature.
I would also like to ask, if SpeedMod k3-15 is better or should I stay with K3-13 ?
as it's a later release it has to be better. But also hydracore v4.3 is worth a look at too. has lots of tweaks to make phone smoothed but a little bit less battery life

[Q] ICS rooted - OTA/KIES JB update

Hi
The wife's Note is presently on stock rooted ICS running a custom kernel (can't remember which one of the top of my head). I want to update it to JB, but want to go down the path of least resistance (i.e. avoiding having to reinstall all the apps, etc).
I guess the first question is, can I update via OTA or KIES?
I presume if I update via OTA or KIES (I have an updated rom notification on OTA) I will loose root (even if I use OTA Rootkeeper?) and the custom kernel (reverting back to stock kernel).
FYI - not really fussed about re-rooting as wife doesn't really need to seem to need a rooted phone.
Thanks in advance!
If rooted with a custom kernel the OTA updates won't work.
Make a complete backup in recovery of the note
and
download one of the no-wipe, rooted Custom Roms and install it.
Thanks. I think I may do a total unrooted of stock JB.

Not really necessary. I repeat. Make a backup and use a no-wipe JB Custom Rom (like my own) and try with this.
Hi
Just a quick follow up, can I flash stock JB via Odin rather than Kies and avoid a wipe?
Thinking Odin, as am having problems with Kies recognising the phone (MTP error).
Flash the JB with PC Odin.
