Need help understanding Kernels and ROMs - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Forum,
I am very new to rooting devices and installing custom ROMs.
I have a few questions I would like to ask, I searched the forum and couldn't find appropriate answers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 (This being one of the threads)
I was going through the sticky thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789397
Which says, "WARNING: Do NOT use CM9, Asylum CM9 or AniDroid kernels as drivers on ANY CM10 based Rom - and vice-versa!"
I had recently flashed CM9.1 on my galaxy note GT-N7000, by following the instructions mentioned on their wiki page.
Just installed clock work recovery, entered the recovery mode, did a WIPE & installed CM9.1 & google apps.
After a few days I followed the same procedure and flashed CM10's latest preview. It went well and everything seems to be working, except that
the phone is a tad bit laggy and doesn't really deliver what JB is supposed to deliver. Sometime the power button won't wake the screen up.
This can be because CM10 is still in preview stage and the stable release is not out. But now that thread I mentioned before kind of bothers me.
Do I need to update the kernel while switching from CM9 to CM10? Downloads are available in the same thread. Or does the kernel update on its own while flashing CM10? And if I have to update the kernel do I need to have CF-Root? Does the fact that I have clock work recovery on my device mean that I have CF-Root?
Sorry if my question is too noob-ish, I just wan't to know a little theory behind what I'm doing so I don't screw my device. None of the threads that I found in the search explain things simply. I would be really glad if anyone of you could help me just understand things. I really appreciate this community for having put up so much information, thanks in advance!

help with ROMOW's v1 ICS (and a sidenote to kernal developers)

I flashed ROMOW's v1 ICS build but i've been having the issue with the home button. And yes I have gone through all the pages of the thread. I have tried reflashing several times. Moreso I'm having problems WITH the reflashing. When I try to reflash in CWM, it goes to installing update, and the bar just keeps going past the end point.
Also kernal developers, it would be so satisfying and a lot of people would be greatful if you can please develop a kernal for the ICS builds *cough* developer of AbyssNote *cough*
Edit: Sorry I meant to put this in the General section, not Q&A....
once the sources for the kernels are available then development on a specific ics kernel can start
seems like you have the same problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1511934

[Q] Need help to flash from Froyo 2.2 custom rom firefly3.0 to CM10 or Jelly bean rom

Hi all,
First of all, sorry if my questions been asked million times, I did try search and read through the forum for days, still not sure.
I had my cappy since 2009, flashed couple times to custom roms with some experts assistant here. Was using HTC EVO 3D for half a year..... and dont like it, and i gave it to my wife, coming back to cappy. l like the captivate community here. a lot more developers and good roms for cappy.
I have done couple days reading on the captivate Q&A, Development, and general section, also, search through youtub and google. no tutorial for flashing from custom rom to JB. I cannot be sure which is the correct flashing procedures for me. Since I was missing half a year time following the captivate thread.
My cappy is using,
FireFly 3.0
Baseband version: I9000UGJK4
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected]
1) In order to flash to Jelly bean, what would be the safest way to flash?
2) if flashing CyanogenMod 10, I have read the procedure for flashing CyanogenMod 10, sounds like no Odin needed, just flash from internal SD?
Any help would be highly appreciated

Steps to get you to CM9 (i personally am having trouble going to cm10)
I take things one step at a time to not mess up anything.
1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
a) make sure you have ATT Gingerbread bootloaders
b) install CWM via the kernel
c) if fails odin back to stock(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843) and repeat (should work)
2) download cm7 from ( http://get.cm/?device=captivatemtd )
a) mount storage and place inside
b) from CWMRecovery follow instructions for flashing (look on internet) to wipe everything and install from zip (itll reboot)
3) download Glitch kernel for cm9 (maybe you might need to do this if you experience boot loops, or error)
4) flash cm9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592141&highlight=kernel)
5)....
Hey bro,
Dont worry, I understand the risk of bricking. I really appreciate your detailed info. I am gonna follow your instruction to flash tonight when I get home.
Some more things tho, I have a rogers cappy means I896, should I get rogers bootloader instead? And what if I flash some ROM which is not CM based, would the procedure any different? Cuz heard ppm saying after flashing CM based ROM is harder to get back normal ROMs because of different file system structure.
By reading some threads, there ppl saying ICS can understand any boot loader, so I don't have the flash it? Cuz I heard flashing that is most risky.
Lastly, I would like to thank you by at least clicking your thanks meter, but is not on your signature. Or could u tell me to click that.
Again, I really appreciate your help

Bugs in JellyBlast 3.0.3 for S5570i

Hi, I just installed the JellyBlast 3.0.3 rom for my Galaxy Pop Plus with the Cor Plenus Kernel 2.1.5 yesterday, and I must say it's a great rom. It's pretty and boots faster than a fresh install of a stock rom. I couldn't help but notice there seem to be some bugs though that don't seem to be reported in the dev thread, so I was wondering if it was just me, or are these actual issues:
1. Some settings don't take effect properly until restart
This happens for things like enabling a keyboard, or allowing installation of non-Market apps. Also, the wifi seems to turn on properly, but it doesn't seem like the apps can detect or use it properly until a restart is done. This isn't a rom breaking issue, but it's an annoying one for a rom that works quite well.
2. The QuickPanel Settings crashes the settings "app".
Every time I try to access the QuickPanel Settings, the entire setting "app" crashes, so I haven't been able to look at those settings at all. This seems to be quite a major bug, though it hasn't really affected the way I use the rom yet.
I hope someone can enlighten me on whether these 2 issues are actual issues, or otherwise. Thanks.

I would have posted this inside the dev thread, unfortunately, I've yet to hit the 10 post requirement to post in the dev thread, and thus I had no choice but to post it here.

Im about tot flash this rom but out of thhe blue I saw this thread and make me a halt to flash this rom.
It's a good rom regardless of the bugs. They're annoying to be sure, but nothing really deal breaking. I would have preferred a more stable rom with less bugs, but given the lack of custom roms for the 5570i, this seems to be the best out there. Given a choice between this and stock, I'll take this rom every time. The bugs shouldn't stop you from flashing and trying it out. In any case, you can always do a nandroid backup before flashing so you can go back to your previous rom if you like.

[Q] First-Time Custom ROM&/Kernel, need Answers

Hello
I've spent the last 24 hours browsing the O2x section of XDA, and decided that I might change the ROM and/or kernel. I'm considering either Paranoid Android or DjangoManouche ROMs with the KingOfBirds Kernel (If i go with DM) or Kowalski Kernel. However, I have some questions that I just can't find the yes/no answer for. Would anyone be able to answer these for me?..
1. I am running Stock Rooted ICS V30A with CWM v6.0.1.5, busybox and adb installed, which I assume I achieved through steps 3 and 8 on the AIO toolkit because I didn't do anything else.
Does this translate to "I am on the new partition layout with EXT4, have cwm recovery and can proceed to install kernels and ROMS for the new partition layout"?
2. I generally use my p990 for gaming, movies and internet yet still using it as a phone at school. None of the kernels (Kowalski's or KingOfBirds) I am looking at using state whether or not they have Tegra H/W acceleration support, which I do not want to loose. Do the above/all kernels for the p990 support H/W acceleration? :fingers-crossed:
3. Do the kernels and ROMs above still allow me to edit vold.fstab and have a 32gb internal memory from my sd card?
4. I see a lot of people saying CM10 is the best, but a lot of posts with questions and fixes for bugs with it. Any users of this one able to tell me if it is stable and would be suitable for me (see question 2)?
And if you are using DM or Paranoid Android, what are they like for someone who wants a nice fast stable O2X?
5. Will backing my apps up with Titanium and zipping my internal storage be enough to save my game data? $9m on Hill Climb Racing I don't want to loose.
6. When I am changing, should I format my phone in cwm, and then flash the kernel after ROM? (eg DM -> KingOfBirds)
hi there! i'll try to answer some of your questions:
1) you are on the new bootloader and should flash rom's for this particular setting(this doesn't necessarily mean you can't go back to the old bootloader-search for unbrick tutorial in development section)
2) from what i know they do(someone correct me if i'm wrong)
3)i don't know
4)i can assure you that official cm10 is an excellent rom and you should try it ) (i for one never had any major problems(bug call, bsod) and will return to it after some testing )
5) i think it will do just fine
6)every custom rom has some guiding points in the first post(and second and maybe third ) ) please do follow them and you will have no trouble.
good luck!

Thanks a million vader I'm going to give CM10 a shot on that note, but like you said if someone can confirm for sure if the H/W acceleration works that would be great too.
I don't think that h/w acceleration is something that lacks in the post-cm9 roms. After lg released both official ics, sources and our cm device maintainer aremcee(ricardo) got hold of them all stock roms and cm variants have hwa. I can confirm that tonyp, in his ParanoidAndroid has the option to assign which app to use hwa

Cool ok, Thanks again Just one last question - should I install kernels before/after zip if not specified by creator?I think I'm going to try pengus77's kernel and CM10 build for the new bootloader.
Flash the kernel after you're done with the rom. Cheers!

[Q] Going to flash to a safe rom on my Note GT-N7000 on 4.0.4 but i have questions

Hi Everyone
After waiting for a year now and it seems that Samsung didn't released any newer updates for my Note GT-N7000 at my country. I was hoping for them to release an update to prevent that "MMC_CAP_ERASE bug? that causes hardbrick" that i have been hearing around here..
But now i got tired of waiting and Now I want to try to root/flash to a safe custom rom, Since i am currently having some problems with my Note now. It's acting a little weird like apps not functioning properly and deleting a small MB file on Internal Memory it takes very long to get it deleted Annoying artifacts appearing during at Dark or Black scenes while watching a video. Using Earphones while watching a video the audio sometimes got muted itself then for a few seconds it resumes back with audio back on repeatedly.
I have only experience on rooting and flashing my Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 but i had a soft brick thanks to the person who posted misleading instructions that causes this to happen. But eventually i managed to recovered from the soft brick and successfully flashing to a JB custom rom
Yeah before you asked me "have you read this Important thread ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 " Yes I have already read everything on the first post by dr ketan at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Anyway, Here is my Information i found on my Note.
Model Number is GT-N7000.
Android Version 4.0.4 Stock ICS.
Baseband version N7000DXLR1.
Kernel Version 3.0.1.5-N7000DXLR5-CL968032
Build Number IMM76D.DXLR5
Here are my questions,
[Q Number 1]
I have already read everything on the first post by dr ketan. I notice there's so many of methods to root the Note. But I'm not sure which one is the safest and easiest method to Root and Flash Hopefully someone here is kind to guide me through the process since this is my first time rooting and flashing on a Note GT-N7000 running on Android 4.0.4 Stock ICS.
[Q Number 2]
There's tons of JB custom roms everywhere! I'm not sure which one is the best and popular one. I'm looking for a fast and stable Jellybean custom rom that are currently available for my Note GT-N7000.
I will be waiting and checking this thread regularly

The safest and easiest way to flash ROM and get ROOT at the same time is using Odin Mobile, which offers option for getting ROOT.
You can use Stock ROM LT4.
For most popular custom ROMs : Eybee1970, Team Union, Alliance, Sweet,
ThaiDai ROM for slim and mutillanguage, Glory ROM also for multilanguage with mods.
There are a lot of other good ROMs here, you have to read more to find out what suits better to your taste.

The safest and easiest way doesn't exist. It's up to you.
And best Rom threads and questions are simply against XDA policy, read the rules and you'll see.

Hello there
I'm really sorry if i just break some of the rules here. I wonder if it's okay for me to just follow the recommended method 1A by dr ketan ? Now i am in PhilZ thread i suppose i have to find my own Galaxy Note Kernel Version first right ? which is DXLR5 so i guess i have to download this kernel here http://www.mediafire.com/?c2jmfqnwajw8ei1 .PhilZ-cwm6-DXLR5-OLB-v3.99 Then flash it in the menu called Stock Recovery (VolumeUP+HOME+POWER button)
I found out that my Baseband version has a DXLR1 in there. Should i be worry on this ?
The PhilZ kernel file listed v3.99 there. my Kernel Version is 3.0.1.5-N7000DXLR5-CL968032, Example when i managed to flash that kernel. I guess that my Kernel Version will changed to like 3.9.9.9 am i right ? or it is not okay to just flash to latest updated kernel like v3.99 ?
I hope it's okay to just answer my newbie questions here. I need someone to help me and tell me whether if i did it right or wrong.
Thank you very much

No problem when you see :
- Baseband DXLR1
- Difference between 3.99 and 3.0.1.5-N7000DXLR5-CL968032.The first is the Philz own version, the second is the Samsung one.
It's normal.

1.As far as rooting method is concerned on said thread, all the methods are safe. there are pros and cons of different method and already mentioned on thread.
I do recommend 1A, as it will root device as well gives you protection from brick bug and without raising flash counter too. So in case you want to go that way, download LR5 philx kernel in zip version and flash from stock recovery.
2.See ROM selection is totally depends on own taste, you can never rely on others answer, but best way go through OP of custom ROM thread, read features mentioned, read some reviews/bugs and try it yourself. that's the only and best way.

First of all, Dr Ketan Thank you very much for helping me with this. I really appreciate your help Yeah i understand what you're trying to mean about that custom ROMs I will take a look at all of them later.
But now I want to see if i got it right again. I will flash it after you give me the final confirmation i need :victory:
1. Find my own stock Kernel build code DXLR5 then go to PhilZ thread and find PhilZ Kernel that listed my Kernel code which is PhilZ-cwm6-DXLR5-OLB-v3.99 then download it After that Connect a USB cable to the computer + Note then copy the PhilZ kernel and place at Root dir of External microSD card then turn off Galaxy Note, then hold VOLUME UP + HOME + POWER button for a few seconds to boot in Stock Recovery Menu then flash it at there. am i right ?
Last question here, Finding a Custom Rom that suit my needs might take awhile since i haven't read all of them yet. But i wonder if it's okay to stay in Stock ICS Android 4.0.4 + PhilZ Kernel ?

1.Yes, but remember you have to select zip version of kernel not tar
obviously there is nothing wrong to stay on stock with safe kernel till you couldn't find out best custom ROM for you.
