Can the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S be Permanently bricked? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone
I have read quite a bit about flashing but have not tried it yet. I know that the phone can be soft bricked if there is some problem and can be subsequently recovered as well. I also read about something known as nand corruption and I guess that too is recoverable as well.
What I wanted to know was can this phone be permanently bricked and if yes in what cases can it be possible?
I searched google with the same question and found that there can be emmc chip failure but that affects the S2 and Galaxy Note and that too particularly the ICS roms only.
So I wanted to know what is the status of this phone as far as bricking permanently is concerned.
Regards

till what i have experienced so far that it can only be permanently bricked by throwing it on wall
P.s. till now i have flashed thousands of times...

Thanks! These kind of replies are motivating to start experimenting and trying some roms!

i would advice you to read the developer instruction carefully and in any doubt check with experience users/read comment in thread and then only flash anything...

I have expierence with sgs+, sgsII, sg5 (gt-i5500), htc one s & lg optimus x2.. the sgsII didnt worked anymore cuz a friend try'd to flash it but had no knowledge about what he is doing but then i ressurected it and now it works.. i think it is not possible to brick a phone (but i am only sure at samsung smartphones) if you do a mistake there are still ways to ressurect it if you did something wrong.

I was planning to use instructions from the website androidadvices for flashing. It has indepth tutorials. For ex-
http://androidadvices.com/update-galaxy-gt-i9000-stable-jellybean-411-firmware/#.UEe0FSK6Dsk
The tutorial for almost all roms seems to be same!
1.) Update your phone to xxjw4 through odin.
2.) Root your phone.
3.) Apply update via recovery mode.
And if you have to update another rom repeat the procedure above!
But reading few threads on XDA the information here seem very complicated for some roms! :-?

yes... few users are complaining about loosing imei and not able to connect to network... so best practice says always flash JB over ICS and ICS over GB... always flash JB over ICS....
If you need more info or links head to remics-jb thread in development section.
Its a nice rom and i am using since a long time..and you will see again me over there also.

Some Samsung phones can be bricked by flashing. The SGS is not one of them though - it's safe.
Search 'brick bug' or check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693704 for more info on which models can be bricked and how.

You meant always flash JB over gingerbread?
So that basic tutorial would suffice to flash roms?
Sure I would have a look at the remics-jb thread. Its time to do some more research now!

if you flash another phone's rom like i9100 s2 it will be bricked..Hard brick
But this is only happening if i9100 rom file has a pit file
Long story short flash an i9100 rom that has ext4.pit file, phone won't be alive... No download mode no recovery no charging animation...JTAG will be required.

carrier locked means you cant put another carriers sim card in and use it..Doesnt have any effect on what rom you run.

Leaked ICS Roms Kernal issues

To my understanding from reading around the forum regarding the potential hard brick issues dealing with the leaked ics roms, as long as you don't flash or wipe or restore etc using recovery you won't have to worry about your device being bricked? Is this the message that is being delivered or am I off basis? I'm currently using Criskelo's ICS rom and I haven't flashed any other rom since flashing this rom and don't intend on flashing anything else until the OFFICIAL ICS is released. Can someone provide me with a little more detailed insights, please!

Common man, just give the damn answer. You posted twice saying read a thread when you have just one post with a good response. You do realise some people may not fully understand it. I have read that thread more than twice and still don't fully know the whole situation. If you know PLS give the answer, it will actually help many people.
I'm also in the same situation as OP, if anybody can give us an answer that would be nice.
Also I read entropy kernel is safe with most ICS leak, is this true? If so flashing entropy kernel will make leaked ICS safe?

You don't understand, eh?
Entropy:
"Kernels that have been confirmed safe:
All known Gingerbread kernels for the Galaxy Note and other affected devices listed above
Kernels built from the GT-I9100 Update4 source code release - this includes XplodWILD's CM9 release and my DAFUQ release."
This means that ALL Repack based kernels are unsafe; they can cause hard-bricks. That includes LP1, LP5 and LP6 kerenels. ALL ICS Roms except for official CM9 are unsafe.
Entropy:
If you are running an affected kernel:
STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY. FLASH A SAFE KERNEL USING ODIN/HEIMDALL.
DO NOT wipe in recovery
DO NOT flash anything else in recovery
In general, DO NOT use recovery at all
Which translated means: GTFO straight to GB, but only via PC Odin.
Is it any clearer now?

[Q] Does rooting a Galaxy Note GT N7000 has any risk ?

Hi everyone
Recently i got my Galaxy Note, but i would like to root it only. to gain access to apps like droidwall, adblocker and other more apps. i wonder does rooting a Note has any risk ? like bricking it or similar problem like this ?
Is it easy to root a Note ?
Why am i asking this ? because my brother said that there's a risk rooting Note. i used to owned a Galaxy Tab GT P 1000 and i rooted it easily without risk or problems that was a year ago. but now my tab died due to some user here named cx5 posted misleading guide to flash latest ICS or JB caused my tab unable to power on anymore.
If you are on ics rom, then u are on an unsafe kernel.Wiping or flashing on stock ics kernel will brick your phone
So as soon as u root your phone,u need to flash a safe kernel. If u are on ics,u can simply flash philz kernel to root your phone and its a safe kernel
Here is a guide to root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
1A method of the above mentioned thread is the best. There is no risk involved of you do everything by the book.

Yeah i am using ICS now android version 4.0.4. Does rooting it have any risk of bricking it ? what do you mean by unsafe kernel ?
stock ics kernels have a bug that has a mmc erase command enabled that could delete critical files and render your phone useless. so comes the need of custom kernels which the devs here disabled this command.
wipe using stock kernels is unsafe

Ima be blunt with you man. I can tell by the way you replied to what these guys have told you, you probably lack the reading skills or attentiveness to do something like this. Well this is my second time doing rooting on a android phone. hopefully there's no problems doing it. I'm not sure whether should i flash a custom roms as i am afraid since there's a risk bricking it. it's my first time flashing custom roms. I just found out some sort of bug that exist on stock ICS at Note that makes the phone bricked if flashing other roms/deleting the current OS. hmm i wonder does the bug affect factory reset too ?
Actually this would have been the second time flashing a android phone if i did not follow misleading guide posted by some user here causing my tab to be bricked.
I'm still not sure why my brother said there's a risk of bricking when trying root a note.
Is it safe to stay rooted on stock OS ?
Is it possible to set permanent landscape mode on note ?
Your answers are in the stickies.
Summary of 2 ways to destroy your phone:
1) Factory reset/wipes on stock ICS kernels (Samsung default).
2) Rooting via cwm.zip through temp recovery

Few beginner questions.

Hello guys I just sold my 4S and bought this Note 1 , anyway im new to android flashing and this stuff , ive heard that its way different than iOS restoring which is really easy and simple. Right now i got a few questions , If i missed a step or did something wrong it'll render my device unusable ofcourse , but will it be unrecoverable ? Thats the first thing. Second thing is that is it recommended that i install custom roms? right now i need one's with the Water Ripple effects on lockscreens , or if you can just tell me how to install the effect without custom rom's that'll be helpful because i want to flash official 4.1.2 jelly bean first and then the lockscreen effect. Im just new to the Android stuff and i dont know where to start Same feeling back in 2008 when i bought my first iPhone and got confused n' all
Read around for awhile, its what got me started when I first came here.
Again, read, read read, and avoid asking questions which have been answered countless times its annoying really.

If you just install stock official 4.1.2 rom via odin, it should come with the ripple effect.
Or if the update is already available in your country, you can just update it to the latest official rom via kies.

You'll notice that all of the download links are zip files.
You just need to extract the zip file until you find the .tar file.
Get 7-zip if you don't already have an archive reader.

- Your phone can't be more than 4 years old. Captivate was announced in June 2010.
- Once unlocked it will stay unlocked after JB upgrade.
- Follow this very clear and easy to understand guide for upgrade procedure.
- Start with CM 10.1, this ROM is the base for almost all JB ROMs for Captivate. You can flash after whatever you want.
- You may need to replace your battery.

About upgrade process just read the guide. It contains all answers to your questions.
The last official ROM for Captivate is GB based Samsung TW, all ICS/JB upgrades are custom ROMs.
[Stock ROMs](OneClicks Master Collection) is the very first sticky thread in Captivate Android Development section.
Please, spend some time to read the information provided on XDA before asking basic questions. Many knowledgeable people sacrificed a lot of there free time to explain everything you need to know about Captivate. Before you run into problems, try to understand the upgrade/downgrade process. And be very careful when playing with images containing bootloaders. Unsuccessful attempt to flash bootloaders will hard brick the phone and this will be the end of all your questions. Good luck!

I don't know what "sense 5 launcher" is, but I can make almost any launcher mimic Sense interface using corresponding themes, icon packs, widgets, etc. - all available for free on Google Play. Note that you will not be able to 100% duplicate Sense interface features unless you buy a HTC phone. All HTC additions to Android OS are proprietary software and not available for download/use on non-HTC devices.
Thank you !

About upgrade process just read the guide. It contains all answers to your questions.
The last official ROM for Captivate is GB based Samsung TW, all ICS/JB upgrades are custom ROMs.

In order to run ICS/JB ROMs you need to have GB bootloaders. In other words, it depends where you start from. If you start from 2.1/2.2, then you need to update the bootloaders. If you start from 2.3.x, then no need to flash bootloaders. This is also explained in the guide. Same thing with stock ROMs. If you never had GB running on your phone and you want to flash KK4, then you need the package with GB bootloaders.
Just a warning
When flashing the bootloaders theres more chance of something to go wrong. I bricked a phone permanently like that.

presently am on GB 2.3.5 I897UCKK4 so i dont need bootloader.. and only by rooting and cwm i can flash any of my desired rom base on GB/ICS/JB
^
Since u r on KK4 u should have the GB Bootloaders. (Unless u see a total pixelated screen when u boot ur phone. If u do, then u don't have the Bls. Otherwise ur good to go.)
And here is a [Utility]KK4 Easy Root by Red_81 that u can gain Root access through and also get the KK4 Corn Kernel that has CWM Recovery so that u can proceed with flashin ur rom of choice.
See post # 4 in the thread linked for a workin download...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26710533&postcount=1
And in my opinion, i would suggest stayin away from flashing ICS Roms, because of the possible encryption unsuccessful bug.

Why you want to flash something that you already have on your phone?
