Hi guys,
I have a brand new in box Motorola Milestone. It has never been activated. It is unbranded, etc.
It is the A854 CDMA version. I originally thought it was Alltell, I brought it in to a local store and they checked the ESN for me and said it was not associated with any accounts. They couldn't confirm if it was an Alltel phone or not?
How do I know which carrier the phone is too? Cellular South, Alltel etc?
Appropriate the help
Check out the firmware version in the phone.
^ Thanks for the tip.
I haven't even powered the phone on yet, it still has the plastic on the screen. What would be an obvious indicator of it's carrier? I know it is 2.1 eclair, it says on the UPC.
Power it on and check in Settings->About phone.
It should give you a idea about your phone. Just google the firmware version mentioned there.
thanks!
I powered the phone up and everything and it prompts you to active.
I pushed activate even though I have T-Mobile and it connected me straight to Verizon
This leads me to believe that the phone is Alltel as I had originally thought since Alltel was purchased by Verizon in my area.
Would that be an accurate assumption? Lol
No. Its the original Verizon droid 1.

I'm not quite sure it is. I'm sure it would be branded Verizon if it was? It does state A854 and the box is even marked as Motorola Milestone. A quick search comes up the A854 milestone is non-Verizon CDMA
quick question- is it possible if I root my old OG Droid that my friend who lost her EVO could then call sprint and do an ESN change and use that on Sprints network? Or is there some unlock code I need from Verizon to unlock the phone so Sprint could activate it? Or is this even possible lol?
Thanks

Possible? Yes, it is technically possible. Finding a Sprint CSR to do this for you (and likely lose their job as a result) is another thing though . My best advice would be to insist that it is a Sprint branded device, even though I'm sure they'll tell you the ESN lookup brings back a Moto Droid. I will say that it is extremely unlikely you will get this cleared for use on Sprint.
Best thing to do is give it a shot. The worst they can tell you is no. And if for some reason they do say yes, you'll need to obtain the manual programming information from Sprint. Dialing ##7764726 under the phone app and inputting password 000000 should bring you to the appropriate menus to input that information.
Providing you actually found a "good CSR" who lets you do this, be extremely patient and courteous to them and don't dare pushing them to waive the activation fee...
cool thank you!
I keep searching, but can't find anything. Is there a site that I can buy the code from or is it even GSM capable in the country?

I just called and spoke to the International services people. They waived the 90-day requirement for me, and unlocked the phone. Haven't tested it yet, though.

Thanks.

No man can hack it, what a pity!
Unlocking the phone for use with GSM Sim without Sprint service is not possible as Moto only releases the codes to the specific carrier and Sprint will not give it to you.
If you do get it unlocked, it will not work in the US on a GSM network ie: T-Mobile or ATT. They're hardware restricted from working on local GSM networks p/fca allowances. I have seen a few devices like some black Berry's work locally after being unlocked but they are few and far between.

GSM works, just not for american providers due to radio blacklisting by verizon. You can use GSM elsewhere in the world on a Droid 4, I don't think anybody has ever gotten one working outside of Verizon in the US.
Only way of getting a truly unlocked decent QWERTY phone in US is getting a Moto Photon Q and having it sim modded.
So, i've been trying to help @Wile_e with his xt1250 let me start from the beginning.
he bought an XT1250 for Cellcom, He wants to use GSM while he is on Finland and Wants to use CDMA on verizon on USA.
Actually he is trying to use with Carrier Saunalahti the carrier uses 900/1800/2100 GSM bands and those are supported by Droid Turbo/ Moto Maxx.
For some reason when he pops in the sim card he says it cant found any networks, but he puts it in on a RAZR I and it works.
I made him look into Global mode and GSM/LTE, also nothing.
First thing i made him do was, Unlock the bootloader.
Then i made him install the unbranded Firmware for XT1250.
He did that, nothing changed, no networks detected.
Then i made him flash droid turbo radio, same nothing happened and lost wifi, so, thats not a way.
so im thinking as xt1250 is closer to moto maxx, recommend him flash moto maxx kitkat radio, but im afraid it will lose the CDMA properties.
im also thinking into flashing full lollipop but that would make him not come back to stock xt1250 firmware due to gt.bin updating.
i also remember someone said that moto turbo firmware and radio had both options but im not sure.
what do you guys think will be a good solution?
invoking the help of @chazzmat , @Semseddin , @Skrilax_CZ
Has he actually tried to choose an APN?

The way my Moto Maxx was locked to Claro until the dealer unlocked it, could be something similar? Can an online service "unlock" it for him?
I was thinking last night we tried to use the XT1250 original with the Droid Turbo radio. What if we used the radio from cyanogenmod? I imagine that team has unlocked all radios, no?
I think it is not globally unlocked like like XT1254 since it has the basic gsm bands for sure.

This phone definitely works with Verizon (many, many people have proved this) -- but this specific carrier (Cellcom) may have locked the global capabilities. Just needs to be unlocked.
How to Unlock Motorola Phones
http://www.wikihow.com/Unlock-Motorola-Phones-with-Windows
When you buy a new mobile phone you will probably get a good deal by signing up with a service provider at the same time. To make sure you stick with the plan, your service provider will lock your phone, making it impossible to use the phone with other providers or take advantage of the full GSM capabilities of your handset when traveling the world. Nor will you be able to use your sim card in other phones, or other sim cards in your phone. Unlocking the phone gets rid of these limitations and allows you to use multiple sim cards and multiple providers on your phone, in addition to greatly increasing the resale value of the phone.

Unlocking Devices
Cellcom does not lock most devices, including devices that were released after February 2015. Our devices are typically not programmed with locks or unique service programming codes, so there is no need to perform any "unlocking". "Unlocking" a device refers only to disabling software that would prevent a consumer from attempting to activate a device designed for one carrier's network on another carrier's network, even if that network is technologically compatible.

Well, the phone was released before Februrary 2015, and they say "most".
Something is blocking the GSM.
I still haven't heard that he changed to LTE/GSM from LTE/CDMA/GSM. I know he wants to use CDMA in U.S. but for now change it just to see...
Also haven't heard that he manually chose an APN.
Those were my other two suggestions...
Then there's the unlocking thing to try, even if Cellcom claims it's not locked.

he already did the apn things and band stuff. maybe the phone its from the last year so not yet unlocked?
Yes I've tried all suggestions, sorry for not posting earlier about it. I suppose I could try the unlocking, don't see a downside to trying. But wouldn't flashing a new ROM/Radio bypass that lock anyway?
I'm going to attempt contacting the carrier for an unlock code, but I am not too hopeful as I am not a customer of theirs. In the event they say no, does anybody know of a reputable imei unlocking company? I'd prefer not to trust the first one in my google results. Thanks!

Radio is likely not to be compatible, since there is actual HW difference (you can flash the radio from Brazil XT1225, and in build.prop under /system change ro.fsg-id from "lra" to "singlela"), same thing needs to be done when using verizon radio I think, but unsure if that doesn't have the XT1250 LRA bundled with itself. You can switch to VZW radio if you change ro.fsg-id from "lra' to "verizon". To play with ro.fsg-id, check the files under /fsg - then the radio will select the one in format as: quark_XXXX_N.img.gz, where N is just some number and it XXXX is what's under your ro.fsg-id.
You can try lollipop for VZW freely with unlocked bootloader, since not being to able to downgrade bootloader / gpt.bin isn't a big deal with that (just be careful not to re-lock your device or apply OTA after downgrade).

Thanks but unfortunately the Moto Maxx is not listed as one of their phones that can be unlocked. And not surprising no other imei unlocker that I've found has it listed as an un-lockable device.
If that was good enough news, here's some more.
From a discussion with Cellcom today:
Cellcom: There is no way to unlock it with our system. The process cannot be reversed if it was locked. Our company does not have that ability.
Looks like I am scrod, unless I can navigate the unlocking process manually.
I believe in what Cellcom told to you, You might try your luck contacting motorola usa - white gloves deparment. Btw did you try another foreign simcard from another operator in your maxx ? (assuming the simcard is broken)

I haven't tried another SIM but I do use this SIM currently in my other phone, the Moto RAZR I. I also used this same SIM in my Droid Turbo when it was still alive. So I don't think it's the SIM card.

I wish they could give you a clear answer if it's locked or not.
That's the only reason I can come up with at the moment.
By law U.S. carriers are required to unlock phones so you can use on other carriers.
I would remind them of that, see if it motivates them to help you.
It appears I have come to a dead end. We have exhausted all suggestions here as well as all ideas that have arisen in-between. Thanks to all that offered support, especially @Jaocagomez. It is all appreciated.
When I head back Stateside I will be selling this phone and picking up another Droid Turbo.
Cheers.
Actually there's a thing that doesn't seem right. I've just noticed on the screens (in the other thread) that it does not recognise that the SIM is inserted, while if it's a carrier lock, it should usually recognise inserted SIM but refuse to register on the network. I wonder if there's actual hardware problem with reading the SIM card.
btw. Anyway I'd recommend buying XT1225 over XT1254, works just fine with Sonera and and supports all their 4G bands, and so it does in US for AT&T.

No it does recognize the SIM is inserted, but cannot connect to any tower. I've taken some screenshots with the SIM unloaded as I still need to communicate (via my Razr I).
Unfortunately I need the CDMA portion of the XT1254, this is why I took such a gamble on the XT1250. Where I work in NY Verizon (CDMA) is the strongest signal by far.
The odd part is we're switching our service from Saunalahti to Elisa, and for a moment I inserted the yet-to-be activated SIM into my XT1250 and for a moment it recognized Sonera and Elisa's networks. But I couldn't do anything since the SIM was not activated. It might have been a fluke, but it gave me hope for a bit longer.
I still cannot understand how I can unlock the bootloader, re flash new ROMs, update the radios but still have the GSM bands 'locked'. This should be solvable. I just don't have the knowledge in this field to go any further, but this still feels to me like something is missing. It kills me to give up on this handset.
Ah I see. It still doesn't make much sense. Moto used to only lock other US carriers. Hmm anyway I wonder if you happen to have your IMEI blacklisted on Saunalahti / Elisa (more info: http://asiakastuki.elisa.fi/ohje/8/ ).
Also radio is separate from unlocking the bootloader, signature is enforcef there despite unlocking the boooader, for security & certification reasons. That's why it still doesn't help if it's sim locked.
