There seems to be some debate over the "Special Deals" (read: Ads) feature...

Whats your take on the matter? Does it bother you? Will you still purchase one?
Truthfully I personally don`t like the idea of Amazon using my device for a billboard. Maybe they should pay me for use of the space... Another thing don`t children get bombarded with enough advertising? Lets just give them something for Christmas that will add to it and that we will have no control over the content!!!
I'm not a big fan of the idea though I will say that as far as ads go, it's a pretty creative, less annoying way to do it. That said, Once someone roots it and I can slap on stock JB so as to make it a glorified Nexus 7, I'll probably pick one up.

They are already paying you, through the use of a subsidy to lower the price of the device. They have been doing this for a long time with their e-Ink Kindle devices. If you choose an ad-supported model over an ad-free Kindle, they knock about $30 off the retail price for that device. So in response to your comment, yes they are indeed paying you for use of that space. When Amazon introduce the device, they will also give you the option of paying that subsidy and remove the advertising (Amazon insist on calling it "Special Offers", but I digress. If you don't like those ads, you can get rid of them don't worry, it's not forced upon you.

I think it might help you to actually read the linked article or at least the title/subtitle for it. The entire point of the story is... "Yes, they've done it before, but this time you can't get rid of them." It doesn't look like there is any opting out of this one... at least for the time being.
What might be interesting, and something I could see them doing is giving the option of ad-removal to Prime members only.
The lock screen ads don't bother me, but an ad on the home screen's not cool.
I don't think it bothers me. An announcement has just been made that you can now opt out for $15. For $15, I would probably choose to opt out.

From the update file, in /system/app there is an apk called dtcp_apk.apk. The icon on the apk says Kindle Special Offers. This may be the apk youll need to freeze/delete once you get root.

This is extremely upsetting, I have attached WifiScan that was said to be free forever
He is charging 2.99 in the market, it may be worth it but I wont support a developer that doesnt keep there word
That's life. $ always wins.
Dunno how old you are, but you remember a certain President saying "No new (or raising existing) taxes". What happened later?. Yeah, raised taxes! yay Just because someone says something doesn't mean they will keep their word.
@OP:
If you have the App already downloaded [i.e. have the .apk file on the phone] you have nothing to worry about.
Which makes me wonder... If you can send someone an .apk file (for instance, an application that is now "paid"), you could give it to them for free, no?
That'd be pretty interesting, considering many of the apps I have are now paid or removed and transfered to paid only.
free -> pay transition
I had all my apps backed up(via astro) on a black g1 I bought on day 1.
I wanted white but but on the first day all they had was black and a few bronze, the wifey wanted 1 in black so I got a white one then swapped my sd card to the white one and downloaded astro to the new phone (after rc33->29 downgrade->JF RC33 upgrade) and installed them all 1 by 1[OT](hey astro dev cant we get a check all on the restore like on the backup)[/OT]
I went to check out the new stuff at the market and all I could see is PRICES, all the good apps got a slight name change and a price tag, how is it protected, my wife would never use most of the geek apps I had on it(i wiped it for her) so would those apps be locked to her imei and I would have to rebuy all the aps I'd want for my white one?
just a tip, to whomever controls this "IF you screw this part up, piracy will be rampant, it has to be fair to the end user and the devs"

Just a question about your screen, sorry to go off topic but what is that icon at the top with the little android guy & the red number?
I beleive that if an app was free, but now dev is charging for it, we should be allowed to share app since it was not cracked if you have original apk. My opinion.

Twidroid. Its a twitter app and is probably the best one you'll find on the market.

I think we should be allowed to share the version before it went premium considering that version was released for free and thus there's no basis for claiming losses with the DMCA regardless of a lack of proper DRM protection.
Honestly stuff like this is making me backup a lot of my apps. I have no problem paying for an app that is worth the money, but when there is little or no changes from the original free version it feels like I'm being back stabbed for my support when I see a $4.99+ price tag on some apps. Its also not helping the situation where Google banned dev phones and anyone not on the T-Mobile network from purchasing premium apps. Between Google and this, some people are just setting themselves up to be targeted by pirates.

A little adb pull/install will allow you to get the "protected" apks and reinstall them when/where ever you want.

Sharing the free apk isn't a problem. The one posted is not the paid apk file -- so this should be fine. The problem is, the free one will most likely not be updated if he introduces new features.
As of now they are the same, other than the "will always be free" has been removed.

I agree. It's totally (term applicable to aad4321 and used in a negative context) that the dev did that. I've noticed quite a few apps that I have in My Downloads that have "updates" that aren't any different except for the name.
Lol, anybody see that amazon mis-listed a PS3 for $39.99 USD?

It was Target. It was probably a mistake on their end, where they were getting rid of older models but didn't want them to go that low. They're already out of stock though.

We will either get the PS3s, or get coupons for something.
I ordered one last night, but I heard this morning they were cancelling all orders due to the misprint. It was worth a shot!
Yeah, it was Target. They tend to mess up like this frequently, lol. A month ago I was able to buy a $50 Playstation card for $18 because they messed up.

We sincerely regret this inconvenience.

Hilarious! At least you tried
I was with a friend waiting at Wal-Mart one time when they printed a great deal on the PS3. Turns out it was a misprint on details of a game/movie combo. We didn't think it was a big deal, but a restless mother that was waiting before us wouldn't let it go so we got a bit of a bonus, too!
Fear not, Amazon! Disclaimer-man is here to save the day!!
From Target.com:
We cannot confirm the price of an item until your order enters the shipping process nor will we charge your credit card until your order enters the shipping process.
Please note that your Order Acknowledgment means that your order request has been received; it does not mean that your order has been shipped or that the price of an item has been confirmed.
Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items on our Web site may be mispriced. As part of our shipping procedures, we verify price before an item is shipped out.
Sorry people, but you never stood a chance of getting that.
Contract law, offers and acceptance. You have to offer to buy something, then the retailer has to accept your offer (or not)

Sam Lewis of ATT called me shortly after this tweet was sent out. He advised me it is ultimately HTC that is responsible for the bootloader being locked. Not sure how much keeping his job may have swayed his response but we shall find out soon enough
We need to make them aware that we know about Carrier IQ and we need it unlocked right NOW!

I fully agree. I really like the Vivid but I feel with out root and s-off Im not using the phone to the fullest. I have 15 days left and if the above is not done by then, Ill be ordering a rocket (which I do not want to do...)
I now have a phone dialog going with ATT Customer Care because of a few tweets.
They implied that they expect me to relay that information back to the community and said they realize by talking to me they are talking to the community as a whole.
I have kept the situation updated HERE
Wow! We have incredible people here. I really feel like we're all making a difference!

the way I see it... a voice is a voice... even an angry voice.
HTC & AT&T need to hear as many voices as possible... go ahead and be angry... let them know...
I and others with direct lines of communication will be calm and reasonable and can point to the angry people... and say "see the natives are restless"
Looks like I should get a twitter account one of these years lol.
They don't give a crap if you contact them in an angry manner. Those of us complaining about this are a minority, most people that buy these phones don't know anything about this stuff. The majority have never heard of rooting, or unlocked bootloaders, or ciq. They may appear to be listening but if they really were action would have been taken already. I'm glad I'm not an overly paranoid person, I'd never be able to use a cellphone after learning about all of this info that is collected every day.

Your post looks exactly like the one I put on the "Why AT&T users should boycott" threadm, I'm glad someone shares my opinion lol. While a boycott does nothing because of us being the minority, spamming their social media can actually do something. The general public does have a Facebook or Twitter, so when they see people complaining every single day about the same stuff on HTC's page, that doesn't look good at all on HTC's part. It raises awareness as opposed to just quietly boycotting a device when we are such a small percentage.

As there is no accepted law that forbids you I do not see why not, this case is because the person made 1.2 Million dollars profit and of course someone would want a piece of that cake I seriously doubt that someone would go after you fro 200$ of electronic that has parts in it from the entire globe. I would say the guy with the 1.2M could have spent a little bit more on a lawyer

I know.
This is a bad article and shame on the OP for posting it without checking something like this out. He/She is like the person that automatically forwards outrageous/inflammatory emails without checking them out.
There is a small amount of truth to the article though. This court ruling would only apply to copyrighted materials that were manufactured outside of the US AND the manufacturer did not give consent for the product to be shipped to, and sold in the US. Only after those conditions were met, then the mfg would then have to object to the second sale. This probably doesn't affect 99.9% of the goods you buy and already own.
ex. You buy something made overseas from Wal-Mart or the Verizon store or AT&T store.. This court case has no effect on that.

Have you considered switching to iOS store ?
That might be an option, it won't be easy at this stage of my life, but it's an option.
At the time when I started, I was not smart enough to consider this and I did the mistake to put all my eggs in one basket.
Now it's tough, with more than a decade of experience on Android.
Android development is what put the food on the table, and I have a mortgage to pay and a family to support.

Frankly, Google has been doing since 2011.
Better Keyboard disappeared?
Is it just me or has better keyboard disappeared off the market? I had to reflash generic UK and root/go back up to 2.3.3, but when I restored with Titanium Backup, I got the unlocker for Better Keyboard but not the app itself. Now I'm stuck in...

IIRC The reason was even pettier than yours.
Bye Bye Better Keyboard 8, Open Home, and anything by Better Android
So, I was looking in the market for better keyboard 8 and couldn't find it. From there, I did a google search and came across their website with this as their top news. here is the link, and I will quote it as well. Better Android Apps Hello everyone, we have to say good-bye this time. Here’s...
www.droidforums.net
It was definitely a red flag for me.
In 2011 the paid apps are what made revenue for the Android Market. The Ad penetration was very low and users were limited.
Another example is ofc YongZh
So Why Were the Yongzh’s Emulators Pulled?
There was much sadness when Android developer, yongzh, had his Market account deleted and line of popular game emulators pulled from the market. Many people were troubled by this news, seeing it as…
androidcommunity.com
Google made a lot of money & goodwill via emulators in the initial days and then they booted out yonghz out .
Now the developers don't have any idea who paid for the apps and who didn't. And basically, the consumers are screwed and developers are harassed.
Also, Google changes its Developer license agreement 3-4 times a year. At any moment any apps can be booted out.
Make no mistake iOS can do the same. But at the very least you can speak to a human who can sort out your affairs. And that 99$ a year is totally worth it.
iOS experience is far more fluid then say 2015 (Been developing for both android and iOS)
Long term it's really wise to move away from Android to say Web or Server Administration.
True
