Hi Guys,
I was recommended to you by a good friend of mine. I recently pyrchased a Samsung Galaxy S mobile phone, and i must say what a great phone, i had had it for a couple of days and want to root it it currently runs 2.1 eclair is it ? and was given a file to download that contains 2 files one telling you how to root and other with root file which is ( z4root.1.3.0.apk ) now ihave already conected usb cable and have done this so far -
Gone into applications and checked unknown sources box!
Then gone into development and checked the usb debugging box!
now where it tells me to put root file into memory card via usb ! now this is where we get stuck dont know how to put root file into memory card and it should go into into internal memory not external ??
just need help and advice on what to do next so i can root my mob and know that i am in the right place for this advice .
Thanking you all in advance.
Saluti

You can use Z4root for rooting 2.1 & 2.2 only.
For rooting 2.2.1 and above you must need a computer. Re-install the USB drivers and check it again.
hi thanks for that mine is 2.1 so why is my mob showing up on lappy when i connect with usb cable ?
Why you're still on Eclair 2.1? Very Strange......
I'd say first update it to 2.2.1 of your region. There is a hell of performance/speed difference in 2.2.1 & 2.1.
Why do you want to root it?
i still dont know why my lappy not seeing my mob when connected to each other ?
You need to download samsung kies this will install the drivers for your laptop to recognise your device. If i were you I would not root at all incase anything happens to your device. Download kies, update your phone and then do A LOT of reading about root.

Yep kies can be downloaded from samsung website. Or google it which will get you to the direct samsung download website somehow. When you install Kies it will install the drivers, then you can connect your phone by USB to the PC.
Yes, on 2.1. it is a bit slow (what you describe as "freeze"). If you upgrade the firmware with Kies to 2.2.1 it will be faster so you really should do that.
Why not root a phone? That's easy to answer as all the guides say here in the forums:
you should only root if:
- you know what rooting is and what it's for
- if you actually really need root (most apps won't)
why should you not root:
- "it sounds like it's something I need but I have no idea why"
- rooting requires flashing (depending on ROM) and that can "bricK" your phone (one way or the other), forcing you to get a Jig (in one of the better results) or send it in for repair (in the very worst case ever)
- rooting a phone can potentially damage your phone (by user error or by malicious apps, just think of what that dude did to jailbreaked iphones in the Netherlands once).
I'm a total Linux noob but I claim to know the difference between a limited user account and a super user (as it is similar in Windows).
So I know I have access to the system files on the phone and I know I could mess up my whole phone and break it if I mess around with these files.
Personally, I did not root my phone until I really had needs for that (such as Titanium backup). As said, many apps won't even need root access.
Anyways, do what I did: start reading those guides, they might be long, some not so newbie friendly and there are quite too many duplicates (kind of) but they contain a lot that is good to know before trying some more advanced stuff. This really saved my phone on the very first flashing already! Do some selective reading.
Should you really have needs for rooting after all that reading and only want to root but no other changes (yet) I suggest using CF-Root by Chainfire as that is a stock kernel (part of a ROM), so basically it just adds root and that's it (needs to be flashed so better read those guides).

I noticed on your first post you checked the debugging, go to settings applications development and uncheck debugging then open kies then connect phone with usb, kies should then install the drivers and it should tell you there is a firmware update which will hopefully give you 2.2.1, then you can disconnect phone, close kies, go back into development and check debugging, connect phone to pc and on phone pull down the information bar and select to copy files to your pc, then you can see your phone as a external drive. Hope this helps and works
I am at wits end trying to root this Sprint Galaxy Tab. I have tried Z4 (didn't work...the screen simply turns white), then I tried the "UNIVERSAL" unlock that is advertised on THEUNLOCKR.COM and in the ROOT guide in the GENERAL forums...all goes well up to the sync with Keis when it tell me that I need to "Reconnect the device in Samsung Keis (PC Studio)...). I try to define this in this, but the "USB" option is completly missing...
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab
Hardware -P100.08
Kernal - 2.6.32.9
Build Number - SPH-P100.EB28
The tab is not currently connected to the sprint network.
Any ideas on how to get this puppy rooted? Or...is there a link someone can point me to?

I used this less than 20 mins ago for my newly purchased P1010
The instructions are pants - but it does work.
I just got my Galaxy Tab back from Samsung after bricking it.
Before Samsung fixed it I had Baseband: P1000DXJM2
After Samsung repair it is P1000DXKM1
Before I bricked I had used SuperOneClick to root it successfully, I had also successfully applied the SGT-Bootloader-Patch-v1.00.apk
Now when I try to do use SuperOneClick to root it again it just sits at - waiting for device.
Windows keeps saying that SuperOneClick (tried versions 1.7 & 1.91) is not responding and I have to kill the program.
The instructions to connect to Kies then unplug the Tab, switch on USB debugging and then plugin again to let Kies try connecting seem to no longer work as switching USB debugging on means the Kies connect option no longer exists.... Bear in mind I did this successfully on my tab previously with no problem but now no joy.... hence I think this tab firmware is locked....
Does anyone have any advice ?
Thanks
Before I start this short tutorial let me say I'm no expert, but I am quite tech savvy (I work in IT and have done so for over 20 years).
I've been having major problems rooting my Galaxy Tab after it came back from Samsung following a Newbie mistake I made....
I have figured out how to root it after much searching and so decided to post this in the hope it might help someone else. Because I'm a new user I can't post links but the things you need are easy to find with Google if you follow my instructions below.
First some background....
When I first rooted my Galaxy Tab everything went perfectly, using SuperOneClick and following directions I found on one of the many forums.
Then after doing much reading I decided to jump into flashing a custom rom.
That too went perfectly.
Then I made a silly mistake and bricked my phone :-(
Fortunately Samsung here in Thailand fixed it whilst I waited in 45 minutes under warranty
So I had a virgin phone again and needed to root it again but this time everytime I tried nothing would happen... SuperOneClick would just sit there saying waiting for device.
This is what I did to fix the problem and gain root access to my Galaxy Tab once more.
1) Forget the instructions that start off with syncing to Kies
2) Go to Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - look for the Samsung USB drivers - Uninstall them.
3) locate and download these Samsung USB Drivers by searching google - Samsung_P1000_USB_Drivers.rar.html
4) Open the archive and find the setup file, run that to install the drivers.
5) Search Google for this page on Lifehacker - the-always-up+to+date-guide-to-rooting-any-android-phone - and follow their instructions for rooting with SuperOneClick. You will note they make no mention of connecting with Kies and disconnecting then reconnecting then..... blah blah blah.
They just say to connect in USB Debugging mode and run SuperOneClick.
This method worked for me first time after trying and failing with various versions of SuperOneClick, 2 versions of Kies, uninstalling and reinstalling....
Hopefully it will work for someone else that is having problems with the 'Waiting for device' message.
Good luck!
Sean
I am considering rooting my LG Optimus 2x (P990), running Android 2.3.4, using SuperOneClick which I have installed under Windows XP on my laptop. When I connect my device to the laptop running SuperOneClick should SuperOneClick recognise it in any way or should the window stay blank until I click 'Root'?

mate,
try using the search function.....you have a complete sticky thread in the developers section///I am giving you the link....but there is no need to start a new thread for something already there,,,,,

Thanks for the understanding
Hope this helps you
SuperOneClick is the root method for froyo (despite the confusing "gingerbreak" name), and you can find the gingerbread root method thread in the thread that is listed above.
Thank you both for trying to help but I had already read those links and they didn't answer my original question which was why I posted it.
However I can now answer my own question - "When I connect my device to the laptop running SuperOneClick should SuperOneClick recognise it in any way or should the window stay blank until I click 'Root'?"
The answer is that SuperOneClick shows no reaction when the device is connected i.e. the window stays blank. I decided to risk it anyway and clicked 'Root' using the SuperOneClick default settings. The result was a rooted device. Very easy.
Hello guys,
I am trying to get DarkysROM on my Galaxy S. However, I am not able to root (CF-root) my phone with neither ODIN or SuperOneClick. I have tried different tutorials and on top of that with different cable, pc, factory reset and even another phone! Obivously is ODIN not reading my phone in the download mode, but instead when it is turn on properly.
Please guys help me out, I am very desperate, as the ROM sounds promising.
I am running it on 2.3.3 GGB.

I have installed all the requirements which are needed, as well as the USB drivers.
In fact, it is not working. Are there alternatives to root?
Same problem here, KIES not recognizing galaxy s phone, tried several computers.
