Yes, and but you also need to fastboot flash your kernel's boot.img
But there are no custom kernels for JB on our device, are there?
Maybe he is talking about ICS's kernel

Kernel is the boot.img
So by fastboot flashing the boot.img you are flashing the kernel to the correct partition

Not entirely correct. The boot.img is the kernel(zImage) and the ramdisk. In an Anykernel update, ramdisk is extracted from your phones existing boot.img and combined with the updates zImage to make a new boot.img in a temp directory, flashed back to the boot partition and then deleted from the temp directory.
The problem with this on an s-on phone is that the boot partition is unwritable in recovery mode so it fails to update. There is a workaround where you can edit the updater-script file in the flashable zip so it doesn't attempt to flash the boot partition and delete the temp sir, so the user can then flash it manually through fastboot, but if you're at a level to do this, it's much easier to just s-off and avoid the hassle.
AFAIK l0st.prophet's kernel isn't working with jb roms, unless something has changed since I tested it.

Right. My understanding of kernels and s-on hboot has been updated
Thanks for correcting me, I meant to say the kernel is IN the boot.img but I guess I got lazy. Hopefully I was right there

Code:
fastboot oem lock
reboot to fastboot again, and it should say **RELOCKED** at the top
To re-unlock your bootloader, you will need to run:
Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
just like the first time you unlocked it
removed.
i am done. thank you

Alternate Instructions
Please note: this will not work on the RAIDER / Holiday -- only the HTC Vivid for ATT.
The reason is that this requires a HBOOT update, which is specific to the phone, and is signed per carrier.
Copy VIVID_ICS_OTA_ROOTED_CWM.zip to your external SD card
From CWM, flash the VIVID_ICS_OTA_ROOTED_CWM.zip
Put the PH39IMG.zip on your SD card, then reboot to fastboot
Re-lock your bootloader with fastboot, then reboot back into HBOOT
Flash the PH39IMG.zip from HBOOT
Remove PH39IMG.zip from SD card (or remove the SD card so that you can enter fastboot)
Enter fastboot again, and re-unlock bootloader
To get CWM re-installed you can either: a) fastboot flash recovery again OR b) Head to my thread and download the update PH39IMG clockwork installer, put that on your external SD, and boot to HBOOT then install it.

Going back to stock?
Right now, going back to stock Gingerbread or even ICS shouldn't be that hard.
There are two methods:
Restoring to Gingerbread
This can be accomplished by flashing a special PH39IMG.zip
It will restore system, boot, and recovery all back to factory shipping stock.
HBOOT will not be downgraded (not possible).
Go here for instructions/downloads: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23242239#post23242239

Restoring to ICS
This can also be accomplished, but it will be a two-step process.
First, you would use CWM to install a (soon to be created) update.zip that would install an unrooted stock ICS rom.
Then you will install a PH39IMG.zip that will remove clockwork and flash boot back to stock also.

Hi,
i have the Telstra Vivid running Dark Raider 1.5.4 Rom at the moment. My phone is still S-ON running the Stock kernel from Telstra.
Now i think about tryin' out another kernel. Therefore i have some questions:
1. Can I use every kernel like Kozmik, kangbang, faux? Can you advise a special one?
2. In many tutorials about kangbang kernel the instructions say, i should playe the zip file with the kernel on SD-card and then flash from recovery with "install zip from sdcard"!
Is it really correct like that? I remember some months ago if your phone wasn't S-Off it was not possible to flash a kernel from recovery. That was why you always had to flash the kernel with fastboot if your phone was S-On.
I'm a little bit confused now! Is it now possible to flash the kernel from recovery? Can I flash also with fastboot?
I don't wanna brick my phone!
Thank you
It hasn't changed at all. If you are s-on you will need to flash the kernel boot.img through fastboot.

Yes, that's why i thought too. But:
http://www.androidauthority.com/vivid-2-0-ghz-overclock-custom-kernel-kangbang-106636/
and here
http://www.androidtuition.com/att-htc-vivid-kangbang-kernel-overclock-to-2-0-ghz-androite-guide/
it just says i have to choose the zip from sdcard from recovery, also for the s-on version! Is it a mistake or is it just that i'm too confused to understand?
Fastboot boot *recovery.img* from your pc... Then install as s-off on the phone and it should work...
If I read synergye's post right
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
yes, but i'm confused! What does that mean? Is there a special recovery coming with the kernel which can flash kernels?
Or does it really just mean i can flash it from "normal" recovery even if i'm still s-on?
There is sort of a special recovery, that when you fastboot it loads that specific recovery which then allows you to flash the kernel from recovery. My understanding you cannot flash this recovery to your phone and it would then work to flash the kernel from recovery everytime. has something to do with launching that specific recovery from fastboot.
OK, thank you, i think i understand now. So i can either flash with his special recovery or i can flash manually with fastboot?

Yes, either use the method described on those other posts or use the traditional S-On method described in several threads here.
Im S-off and use flash image gui app to install them, if you would do s-off it would be so much easier....here is link to the info on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16129916
Doing the wire trick is really easy to do for s-off, and you cant brick it by trying it,

Since you have CWM installed, you must have unlocked your bootloader, so all you need to do is flash the boot.img file from the CM10.1 zip file in fastboot usb mode and you should be good to go.

Its not a stupid mistake at all. Please refrain from calling it stupid either because that was not the mistake. The mistake was that you didnt flash the boot.img. Just extract the boot.img fro the CM10.1 and put it with your platform-tools in your SDK folder. Then, in command prompt, navigate to the SDK folder. Reboot your phone into fastboot.
Type: fastboot devices <---------- to make sure your phone is detected
then: fastboot flash boot boot.img <---- assuming you did not change the boot image name, in which was just replace the second boot with watever you changed it to. DO NOT FORGET THE .img AT THE END

dude.... u have CWM, u have bootloader unlocked. Place your boot.img file from the CM10.1 in the platforms-tools folder in your sdk folder (which you MUST have downloaded when u unlocked your bootloader). Navigate to the platform-tools folder in cmd and then type the lines of code.

At OP, the thing i said to do does not even require S-OFF. With S-OFF you can just flash the ROM and your good.
It seems I'm running into the same problem. I went through the steps here but I still can't get the phone to boot. I did S-OFF and I have CWM running as well on the phone it just wont boot any ROM... It just kinda loads endlessly

I would like to know as to how can i backup stock recovery? Bcoz, i wish to go S-off and unlocked via Revone method, then flash TWRP, flash a few mods, and then get back to stock recovery , s-off, locked bootloader. Is that all possible. Does a nandroid backup, backup's stock recovery as well???
Thanks in advance guys.
You can't do a nandroid without custom recovery so that is out of the picture. OTA zip files however contain the recovery file you need.

You'll need to download either CWM or TWRP. You can rename the download if you want to something like cwm.img or twrp.img to make it easier.
Once the backup is done it will be on your phones internal storage in the clockworkmod or TWRP folder - depending which one you choose to boot. Just copy it to your PC.

One question though... i bought this phone as a used, and it was Tampered and Relocked. When I selected the recovery option, it booted the phone to somewhat stock like recovery, and then after some process, the phone rebooted, and the phone was totally Factory Reset.... everything in the storage was gone too..... so is there an way to check if it is indeed a stock recovery, or this is the normal behaviour of stock recovery...?
You need to unlock your bootloader before doing anything with custom recovery. Use Revone or the official HTC Dev method

this method of just booting a custom recovery used to work with OLDER hboot versions. but it doesn't work with newer hboots. my hboot version is 1.54.0000 and when I use the command mentioned above, my bootloader menu just freezes!! guess I'll have to look for the OTA file then to find the stock bootloader!

first of all, you must have your bootloader unlocked in order to boot/flash a custom recovery. you can't do so if your bootloader is locked. and secondly, yeah, I also had the boot command worked out before I had the 1.54 Hboot. I guess this one doesn't allow 'just' booting a custom recovery!
