Complex External SD Problems - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had this problem for ages now, and I haven't seen anyone with similar issues. Basically, I can't copy large amounts of data to my external sd because my phone crashes.
What works:
- mount external sd card on all ROMs
- mount internal sd card on all ROMs
- copy to external sd card on gingerbread ROMs
- copy to internal sd card on all ROMs (GB+ICS+JB)
- placing the external sd card in an adapter, and copying files via laptop card reader
What doesn't work on ICS and JB ROMs:
- copy to external sd card from internal sd card
- copy to external sd card via usb
- copy to external sd card over wifi (using es file explorer)
- copy to external sd card via usb while in recovery
* I am able to copy small files. But when I copy more than about 16mb, it fails.
** Example: Copy single 4mb mp3 will succeed. Copy folder of mp3s will fail. Copy 40mb flac will fail. Copy 100mb video file will fail.
How it fails:
Copying speed slows down, then the phone slows down and freezes. A hard reboot is necessary.
What I have tried:
As mentioned, everything works great on GB ROMs. Problems only occur on ICS and JB ROMs. I have tried the following:
Dark Knight, CM9, Slim ICS, CM10, Helly Bean, Slim Bean. Tried Semaphore and Devil kernels.
Currently on Slim Bean + Semaphore.

Bump?

My base ROM is SlimBean 2.2 which I'm using with Semaphore kernel.
I've been caught like this in the past! The external card is called 'emmc'.
By the way, don't forget to make a backup copy of your IMEI (found in 'efs') just in case you lose it during flashing.

It turned out to be a faulty external SD card. I have replaced it and everything is 100% working.

[Q] Help: External SD unreadable after flashing ROMs

Hi,
What would be making the files on my external SD invisible to my phone?
When I was running stock 2.1 JH7 on my Captivate I was able to access files on my 16gb class 2 external SD card just fine.
However after flashing Cognition 3.04 and then Perception I am unable to see any of the files on the external SD card. When I browse to /sdcard/sd the file browser reports accurate memory stats (3.67 gb used) but say no files. Via USB I'm able to mount both internal and external SD cards and perform file management via my PC (such as copying files from one internal to external and vice versa).
I have removed the external SD card from my phone and formatted it fat32 and copied files back onto it and reinstalled in my phone and still can't see any files on the card from the phone.
Shot in the dark... Is there an issue with the lagfix file system and the fat32 on the external sd?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
thanks,
Fred
check /sd/external_sd
This happened to me just once in my last 50 flashes....only thing I did was reflash and it started working. Sorry this doesn't help since you already flashed again and still have the issue.

That led me to the right spot. On my phone my external SD is at:
/sdcard/external_sd
Where /sdcard/ is the internal SD card
What then is /sdcard/sd ? This is where I looked before for external SD data... does the path change with various ROMs?
think they changed the mount points of the external sd from 2.1 and 2.2 around a bit
in 2.1 the external is /sdcard/sd
in 2.2 its /sdcard/external_sd

Thanks again.
/sdcard/sd is still on my system but I can't see any files. Oh well.
yeah you will still see a /sdcard/sd folder in your explorer but that /sdcard/sd is not pointing to your external sd card after the froyo update. My guess is that they made a directory /sdcard/sd for backwards compatibility with older apps.

[Q] managing external sd card

I have this peculiar problem, sometimes my sd card wont auto-mount.
Thats not really a issue since its easily fixed, but the thing is that when the sd card is not mounted, another folder is used in its place.
so when i try to access the sd card i go to /mnt/sdcard/_externalsd/
Sometimes i get the correct sd card contents, but sometimes i get another folder, containing stuff and photos that ive been placing there when the sd card was not present.
This eats my internal memory and i cannot find this non-mount-folder when the sd card is mounted.
So i wonder, is it possible to disable read/write to this default non-mount folder so it appears as if the sd card isnt present (when it isnt) instead of as it is now, faking a virtual sd card?
Just unmount your sd card then copy the files from externel/ to some backup folder on your internal sd . To get the mounting issue fixed you could mount your sdcard on a pc and format it with the standart system tool , just rightclick the sdcard once its mounted and select format, dont do quick format dunno if thats also gonna work
No auto amount is also due sometimes to a recovery reboot from Rom Manager directly
Happened to me
Entering in recovery with on/off and vol down solve it

[Q] external sd card link on internal sd card

Before AOKP, there was a folder on the internal sd card that displayed the external sd card. I guess that was some kind of special link.
Is there a way to do this now so the EMMC (external sd card) will show up in the internal sd card as a folder?
Same question here. Can't get any music player except for some of the music folder players to read the emmc folder. How can we change the old "external_sd“ to point to the new emmc folder with aokp

[Solved]CM10 SD card confusion

I have just installed the official CM10 nightly from http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p990
First of all used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975274
Took me a while to find the external sd card, it is listed as storage/sdcard1 but I can't access any internal sd card, I assumed it would be listed as storage/sdcard0 but clicking that just gives me an empty folder.
When I attach the phone to the PC only the external sd card shows up. CWM-recovery can't mount the sd card either (I have tried with CWM6 and CWM5).
I tried mounting the sd card from "settings-device-storage" and it starts to do it and then stops.
I could maybe live with this but I use Sygic for a satnav and that is telling me there is no sd card present, so I can't use it.
edit
it's ok now http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34086129&postcount=30

[Q] Inaccessible internal SD card; CWM sees it - how to save data?

Hi fellow members,
I'm facing with inaccessible internal sd card problem since today morning. Everything worked fine, phone was a bit laggy so restarted it. After that, usual SD card check run and I keep getting "Damaged SD card - SD card is damaged. Try reformatting it." message External 32GB SD card works well.
Titanium Backup does not see the internal sd card anymore. Tried Root Explorer Lite, it does not see it either.
I have been using this rom for 2 months now without problems:
[ROM][GT-N7000][JB][4.2.1] Official CyanogenMod 10.1 Nightlies
When I boot to Recovery, ClockWorkMod does see both internal and external SD cards... Tried to hook up to PC while being in recovery to save data from internal card to PC, however it does not see the phone there.
Questions are:
how to fix internal sd without reformatting it?
how to save internal sd card's content to PC (either from recovery)?
what do you suggest?
Thank you in advance for your help.
ps: I do not have AT&T version of Note1, but the international.
Using this app right now for copying internal SD card content to external SD.

This app is simply amazing! Could select the whole internal sd card content and paste it to a folder on external sd card IN RECOVERY MODE. Now have to figure out how to fix the inaccessible inner sd.
