3rd times a charm? I hope. - Nexus 7 General

Bought a N7 two days ago, got home and charged it and it had a defect, not from the factory, but from Walmart. The screen had some damage towards the top like too much pressure had been applied there. It didn't go away and I exchanged it for another. I took that one home and started it up and the LCD panel on it was shattered, not the outer glass. They both had slight screen lift but that didn't bother me as I believe it could be fixed. Also they were both C70's. It's just got me discouraged and pretty mad. Both boxes were damaged somewhat so that's why I think its Walmarts fault. But anyway I'll replace this one this week sometime and report back.

Yeahhhh that definitely sounds like a Wal-Mart issue there... especially considering the damaged boxes and all. Do you have pictures of the boxes? I'm curious as to what condition they were in that they A) thought it was okay to put on the shelf and B) thought they were decent enough to not even warrant opening the box to make sure... unless it's somehow against Wal-Mart policy to open items to verify they're okay? (wouldn't be entirely surprising now that I think about it)
There's not much room to play for the Nexus 7 inside the factory box. They're pretty clean cut with minimal wasted/open space. Any semi decent hits it would take, especially on the top portion, might be substantially detrimental to the tablet itself.

I did 5 exchanges at various Walmarts and they were all C8O's. I was stubborn and looking for one without and screen separation. I gave up on that mission and realize they all gonna be coming with slight screen separation. But I did manage to find 2 with minor issues. I would avoid the C7O build. Only reason being its a older build.

Yeah, I blame Walmart. I don't have pics of the box but i do of the devices (Cant post now tho) The boxes were mainly damaged on the back and sides. I'll post pics later tonight hopefully.

I'm hoping they get some C90's soon as I took the last two they had. The screen separation doesn't bother me a lot if its miniscule.

Not to try and be rude but I'm so glad I live in the U.S.

Pics finally!
So heres the first N7 with slight, useable damage. http://db.tt/6IjqNLFk that one was useable but not desirable. My next nexus 7, http://db.tt/zmJtkAaN was not in any way useable, the LCD and touch was broken. Here's the box of #2 http://db.tt/7eIhS4TZ http://db.tt/IYtNHeDp http://db.tt/nboEqNKa http://db.tt/j6b6XMjI There's the pics, they aren't the best but maybe they'll work, also sorry about the grammar and punctuation, I'm in a hurry.

I've got a few pics up now.

Good luck with #3! It took me 7! (C6,C7,C7,C7,C8,C8, and now C8..you can see how messed up my account page is now LOL) to get one I was happy with, defect free. I've seen it all now, defective batteries, dead pixels, dust under the screen, screen separation on the left. All of mine have been from Gamestop.
Also you might want to give this thread a look, if you ever need to use VIP for an RMA it's actually an "O" as shook wrote it, not a zero :good:

Thanks. I should have a new one Friday. Wow, that really sucks.

Just an update.
Returned my N7 and got another. It's a C80, so far no problems other than minor screen lift. Will update after a few days.

My 3rd replacement should be here in a day or 2, my original device and previous 2 replacements all had screen lift right out of the box.

Wow, hopefully the next one won't have the lifted display. However, if it has a dead pixel I'd call it a day and settle with it and hope nothing else crops up. I've learned with these products that you will NEVER get a "perfect unit" just one that's "good enough". Then again, with the defects like dead touchscreen spots and lifted displays these are clearly manufacturing and part issues that should be fixed.
Good luck.
I really wanted to buy one of these tablets, but hearing stories like yours is keeping me from moving forward. I'm continuing to monitor these forums to see if it improves, however, I'm losing faith and considering getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch tablet instead. I hope you get a functional one soon. Good Luck!

Don't lose too much faith in the Nexus 7. It's not unusual for new products to have hardware issues on the first batch. Look at Apple's track record, I bought a launch date Intel Macbook Pro expecting a solid device. However, I was greeted with a machine that was riddled with issues. I say buy a Nexus 7 now from a retailer nearby if you can. That way if you do end up with a flawed device you can always return it to them within their return period. I've had mine since early last month and have no issues with mine.
I'm onto my third coming tomorrow. if this doesn't work out I will refund it and get the yes wait for it - iPad Mini! Hate on!
I got my third today and it's the worst one so far. I probably need to sleep on it before deciding what to do next. I'm not too happy with Google or ASUS right now though.
That's really unfortunate man. I'd say keep on trying, but thats easy for me to say. Ive been lucky enough to get a good unit n the first go round.

If this were just any old Android tablet, I'd agree. I did the same with the Transformer Prime--too many issues, too many replacements, and I finally gave up and got a refund directly from ASUS.
However, this is the only Nexus tablet, i.e., the only one that will get immediate updates directly from Google. That's worth its weight in gold. It's also going to be a great development device for people who are into that sort of thing.
It's a pain in the **** to go through all these gyrations to get a decent unit, but in this case I think it makes more sense than it would otherwise.
After reading all these replies, it honestly makes me feel bad that mine was near perfect on delivery.
The only problem I had was that there were too little scratches on the outer rim.

Really, any problems are small-fry. I have 2 units, and 2 have gone to relatives, and they are all perfect. Mine was a UK pre-order, the others shortly after launch,
Mine has a really slight screen lift, but you would have to look real close, and it really doesn't bother me, it's a high spec entry level device.
This is how Asus operates. If you enjoy the Prime despite its Asus inspired defects, keep it and enjoy it. If you insist on a well built device, wait for a non Asus Nexus tablet.

Could be the mold on the bezel if looking at the device from the top down.
But my replacement has two marks on the bezel as well. Looking at the screen, left side. About 3/4" from top, and bottom.
To me, it looks like they've taken it back apart to correct the screen lift issue.
I am on my first Device and have no problems with it.
Guess its just luck at the moment.

I was super successful repairing screen lift....ironically I broke it anyway!

I completely tore it down. Down to the bezel. When taking the bezel off be very careful not to scratch the black on the glass itself. Once there I removed the thin double sided tape, cleaned it up nicely and bought and used 5 minute epoxy. I used a small paintbrush and applied the epoxy to the plastic bezel carefully not getting it in the screw holes. I then put the glass back on the bezel using clothes pins to clamp for an hour. This was perfect. I had a little goop out the side and while it was still in a waxy state prior to completely curing, I scaped the excess off with ease. This produced a perfectly adhered screen to bezel. I can say with confidence, it is the double sided tape allowing the screen to lift off the silver plastic bezel. The length of my screws had nothing to do with anything on my tablet. I reassembled everything only to knick my display wire, rendering all of work pointless. Anyway, took it back to Staples and they handed me a new one no questions asked. Ironically this one appears to be a perfect build. I feel as though if I leave it in the car for even a minute in the heat, the same thing will happen. The adhesive on the double sided tape is weak. It pulled apart with ease and once it heats up, its going to weaken and pull apart. Thanks for reading.

Yep.. My screen lift has gotten a lot worse too..
I tried to take off the cover just now, got 3/4 corners, then heard the familiar sound of tape separating from a surface, and saw the screen flexing up. With basically no force put on the unit at all...
I didn't feel like continuing after seeing that so just clipped my cover back down.. Build quality isn't great.
I'll definitely be RMAing if any developments are made in the construction of the N7, or if a new IPS screen is chosen, I'm not a fan of the color reproduction, looks like crap TBH.

Yeah but he broke it because he was trying to fix it so he wouldn't have to RMA.
I think that contributing your own time, resources and effort before *****ing to Google about 1mm of screen lift is a really good attitude to the problem.
Sure he messed it up, but there was just as good of a chance he was going to save Google money by attempting the fix himself.
In this situation, I think OP did the right thing.

He returned it to Staples. The manufacturer, ASUS, is the only one taking a loss. And their refurbishment department is getting an epoxied unit.

To be clear, I did get the warranty, however when I went to the store he (manager) just looked at it, went to the back and got another unit, no questions asked about a receipt or warranty. Kinda cool in my book. I never frequented Staples, but that kind of service earns my business for the forseable future. That said....when it was disassembled you could see the adhesive on the thin double sided tape and where it was lacking as well. I won't hesitate to tear this one down if and when it lifts. I can say this works and works great for all you guys having issues.
On a side note the crackling I see people talking about may be the adhesive coming unstuck.....

The crackling - or creak - is from a piece of foam-tape being positioned too close to where a seam in the cover sits. It's easily rectified with a piece of 2"x1/4" paper inserted between the foam-tape and the plastic Been there, done that, had a Tee-Shirt printed
To OP:
Did you chop it off completely? A similar thing happened to me except that mine is only half cm cut. So far no problems at all with the display
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Chop the cable? No, I couldn't figure out how it came out of the clamp and had a small sscrew driver trying to pry it up and severed one of the fine hairs in the bundle. For those of you who may not know, you lift the back of the clamp and that releases the pressure and then simply slide the cable out. Once my feeble mind figured it out, I was amazed at my stupidity. Its quite simple and elegant really. BTW. This is for the double cable connection. The single does just pry up, hence my confusion.

It's a sad day today for my Nexus...

So today I am just chillin, and pull out my phone from my pocket and I didnt really grip it hard and just falls from my hands... I swear when it dropped it felt that it was falling in slow motion. And out of all the places it could fall, it falls at an angle and then on the screen.
I picked it up and I see the top of the screen has a crack from one side to the other, and another crack on the bottom right corner. And it gets worse, when I turned on the screen the touch doesnt work at all so basically my whole screen is messed up.
Found a website that sells the screen already glued with the frame and a battery so all its missing is the motherboard and internal stuff.
Buttt its $170 so yea gotta wait till next week when I get payed.
I would post pics but dont have 10 posts so yea, it really sucks I've had the phone for about a month and I always protected it. :crying::crying::crying:
Sorry to hear that but I've read that LG will repair your screen for less than that.

Asking them to give you a price and time estimate cannot hurt. Additionally, the limiting step of production is more likely everything that goes on that motherboard, not the touch screen.

LG will not give you a quote. They will only say, "We cannot give you a quote without you sending it in. Please send the phone in to us, with you being responsible for shipping, and then once we've had a chance to look at it, we will let you know the cost of the repair."
Even after I pushed saying how about the front lcd and digitizer, they still wouldn't give me an estimate.
Sam Thing happened to me.. just 1 crack but half the touchscreen doesnt work.. i've seen plenty of ppl with cracked iphones whose touch still works.. called lg and they told me the same thing. Don't know if its worth wasting money on shipping just to find out they charge more for repair.. kind of a risk. Did you ever end up getting it fixed?

That really sucks... Something about these new phones, in particular the ones with the new touch sensor in glass or whatever they call it. The touch response is gone on a crack. I recall my first Droid had two cracks across the entire face and it worked flawlessly... I think I'd rather have that 1mm gap in the display/glass then have to replace it due to a simple crack.

[Q] My Nook HD+ body and screen are a bit concave, anyone else?

I purchased a Nook HD+ last weekend and I've noticed that on the long dimension the screen curves a bit inward. More so on one side than the other. I carefully placed a straightedge on the surface of the screen and eyeballed it by looking at light that leaked through. Observed light shining through between the surface of the screen and the edge of the straightedge at the middle of the screen. Worst case is about 1mm. If I look down the long edge of the body a slight curve is plainly evident.
I went by the store today and looked at all the display models and a few were much worse than my HD+. Salesperson agreed with me that it was what he was seeing too. Then said, "I have one and I've never noticed that before."
Whatever! Anyone else notice this on the HD+?
I asked about a replacement. Salesperson was not eager to do that. I still have a few days to think about that. Frankly I was a bit peeved. If no one else here has observed a concave screen, I'll insist they replace and make certain to get a straighter / less concave one.
I did a reflection test with my Nook HD+ screen and did not notice any distortion, the screen is flat.
However, if the battery is swelling a bit that might explain the distortion. And if the battery is swelling, I would insist on a replacement!

Mine has no curvature of the screen, but does have a very slight concave curvature on the left side just above the hole. But that is where I put my left thumb when holding the device in my left hand, so it is probably compressed a bit from hours and hours of holding it. And now that I look again the right side has a very slight concave curvature.
I have two devices and just looked at the other one, which is older, and it has just a slight curvature on the screen and distorts reflection just a bit. And both sides bend slightly.
I hope you have not caused me to be distracted by it now. LOL.

Update
Took the concave HD+ back and got a new one as a replacement. It is "straight" BUT almost every time I tap on the screen near the N button it makes an annoying sound. AND, something else, the bezel that surrounds the screen to the left of the N button makes a snapping/popping sound if you're holding it there and then release it. Like something is not glued or assembled right. At any rate something isn't right.
Yikes, back to the store again before this Thursday and the end of the 14 days.

I finally got one on the third try that was satisfactory (relatively non-concave and no popping/cracking noise) and have had no problems since then. I think if you're not happy B&N should take care of that.

Okay, well then I will give it another try. Can I just go to the store with the receipt and get a new one? (I am still under 14 days).

As long as you have registed stock you don't even need a receipt. Just go to the store.

Okay, I was able to get a new one. It was the last one in stock. I tested it in the store and it wasn't completely flat either. They guy said, he doesn't know why - hasn't happened before. He also said, he isn't sure if BN will produce anymore. They won't get any new ones. So I took the new, bent one.
The device is working fine, just the body is slightely bent again.
Well, I will have to live with it. I don't want to send it away and maybe just get my money back, because they stopped making the HD+.

anyone experience popping noise when pressing note 9 screen?

Hey!
Got a Note 9 last week and day after receiving it i noticed when holding the note 9 and pressing on screen in certain areas (near sides/corners/centre) it would make a popping noise, sounds like adhesive behind the screen not adhering properly or something like that. I got Samsung to replace with a brand new one and same thing with this one, it happens whether phone is on or off, it's definitely not rite as you can hear it very clearly, feels like some flex going on in screen when it happens as i can feel the screen kind of dip slightly when it makes the noise, but ok when it does not make the noise.
Curious to see if anyone else have had the same issue? gutted as loved it for the short while i had it but sending second one back now for refund as worried something will happen with screen further down the road and Samsung may not cover it. I know of at least 3 others who had this issue when buying same time as me.
Cheers.
Do you have a tempered glass installed?

Hey thanks for sharing that. This is the first link I got searching for this, I have it happen to mine note 9 too. It's such a bummer since I had it for only three days and will have to setup a new one from scratch if they have to replace it.
are you sure the s-pen isnt vibrating when you tap it on that side? remove the s-pen and tap it. i bet it goes away
Wow. No issues like that. I've had three Note 9s and all three have been perfect. I'd definitely return for a replacement. Weak or loose glue could seriously affect the water resistance, since it depends on a water tight seal between the screen and the frame. I'd never recommend using your phone in water anyway, but I at least like the assurance that if my phone takes an accidental dip. There's a good chance it will survive.

Yep real shame, my replacement was the same to, it's on way back, getting a refund, not worth risking something going wrong with the screen later down the road, i mean manufacturers do anything to not accept responsibility specially when it comes to screens. First one started on second day, it was great for the first day, replacement was doing it from the moment i took it out of packaging and holding it, it was worse than the first one.

It happened to me when turned off with no s-pen in, no screen protector, no case.

agreed.
After studying the noise a bit more, it is definitely an issue with the glue. It will not happen all the time I press the screen, but it happens more often when the phone is a bit warm to the touch (e.g. charging the battery). Also, it appears to be along the side where the battery resides - I wouldn't worry about the battery itself, it just makes sense that the glue will get loose where it heats up more often (in my case, I don't stress the phone all that often for the other side where the SoC is to play a role). Anyways I'll be returning it tomorrow once the shops here in Berlin open 'cause now it's christmas break.
One extra thing that might be interesting, the back-side also has some sort of a glass-separation issue, at least it looks like that. Notice the circular smudge around and right of the DUOS label - I tried cleaning it but it comes back, I think the glass is separated at that point too, but just a tiny bit. I've had the phone for four days and haven't dropped/hit/scratched it AFAIK.

I'm hoping to get a better one after a refund, mind sharing if you happen to live in Germany as well? I'm wondering if it's a bad batch or something.

i agree with you, seems to be adhesive/glue issue, it did not happen all the time for me either but as you mention it, i noticed it more after recharging (when phone gets warm) so think you nailed the issue on the head to be honest.
I noticed it around the sides (edges) and the centre of screen, second one was even worse much more noticeable and was happening straight away after taking it out of box.
Something i noticed but never mentioned as wasn't sure but second one was the same, maybe it's normal but don't think it is, on the curved corners of the screen it appeared to me the screen looked slightly lifted not flush with the frame but only on corners.
I live in the UK btw. I was thinking a bad batch but seeing Samsung had a good deal on with cashback and discount i imagine they sold allot between the time i arranged to send mine back to getting the replacement which was a week so i imagine they would have been separate batches although i could be wrong.

Cool, thanks for the info. It's too dark in the winter days so it's hard to say if the glass is a bit off on the corners, but nevertheless, I will write back when I (hopefully) get a replacement one.
One last thing - you did speak directly with Samsung support? Did you buy it from their store or you just didn't want to bother with the store you bought it from?

I bought it directly from the Samsung online uk store. There was a discount direct from Samsung for students/people who work in certain industries so it could be bought for £699 (£200 off), but also they were offering £150 cashback bringing total down to £549, plus cashback by going via a cashback website meant i would have had it for around £504, also they were doing trade in so people could get even more off up to another £150.00 bring cost down to £399, then people got the samsung game deal thingy, don't play games myself but people can get a Fornite theme by downloading Fornite playing 3 games then you get the free theme, kids going bonkers for the theme, people selling the theme upto £100. So people could have the phone at a bargain price.
So I got a replacement, and just as you said, the display had the same popping sound out of the box. It happens like once a day, but since there is really no substitute for this device right now (stylus + good DAC, besides all the other great features), I'll keep using it and if it gets worse contact Samsung down the line for warranty/replacement. Decided to leave this as information if some other person happens to have the same problem in the future.

feel for you, such a shame and disappointing to happen a second time, it's a great phone, i did not want to risk it so sent second one back too. Fingers crossed you won't have any issues. Mine was happening regularly so like you say just keep an eye on it.
I don't have that issue even with the tampered glass on my phone.

i actually noticed it a few times.. like last night it was doimg it. sort of right above where the keyboard is in portrait mode..
it seems to happen when its really cold outside for me.. its not enough for me to have it replaced thankfuly
I can replicate this when I clean my screen with a microfibre cloth. It happens on pretty much all of the screen. I believe I can also see some light streaks in the screen when this happens. The popping sound happens regardless of the temperature of the phone. Will have to inspect it more to see if I can spot any other issues with the screen. I got mine in the UK just over a week ago. Apart from that I think the phone has been great so far. Not sure whether to replace it.
glad i sent mine back now to be honest, personally i would send back, as you say everything else is great apart from the screen popping sound. The worry for me is the screen might cause issues further down the road, screens are the biggest issue with mobile phones and manufacturers are quick to blame user and deny warranty.

My Unlocked US Note 9 does it too. Mine mainly does it on the right side near the middle. It's not enough for me to warrant sending it back; it still works fine and I don't see any screen issues when pressing on the screen. Also I bought mine used so I'm guessing the screen was replaced. If it gets worse, I guess I'll fix it then.
