[Q] .tar and .tar.md5 difference

can anyone tell what is the difference between a .tar file and .tar.md5 file? cos i downloaded a pda file that is .tar.md5 from here:
http://hotfile.com/dl/104777809/7737...A.tar.rar.html
and normally when flashing via odin theres always the .tar file only...
so i renamed the md5 file by deleting the ending(.md5) and seems like nothing changed to the file size etc(is it still safe to use in odin?). just need to know which file should i use to flash the single pda, the .tar or .tar.md5?(which is safer?)
thanks!!!

Ahahahaha for real? Nothing changed to the file size? . You know my HDD got suddenly light as I deleted some big files
Sorry, really sorry for that . I just couldn't resist .
the file is the same, has nothing to do with the "ending"
you can flash it .the md5 just suggest it has a checksum/hash maybe there

Just Google MD5 .
Its a verification of the file is all ..

If you have 3 files after extracting (CODE,MODEM,CSC) then attach these three files as PDA=CODE , PHONE=MODEM, CSC=CSC, if you have one file the attach it in PDA,
Then UnCheck Re-partition,
no need to select Pit file,
Put your phone in download mode,
Attach phone to PC
Once your PC detects your Phone Click Start
After Flashing Device restarts twice. Done..

Thanks very much for your very helpful reply.
Remember using PC Odin to update, you are closing way to Root your device, If you want to Root it, just Root before it. See installation guide on my signature for further detail

Thanks for your advice and the guides which are very helpful. I've downloaded the German stock ROM (LA4) from your list but I've been unable to extract the tar file using Winzip, so I'm stuck at the moment. Any further help from anyone how to extract the files would be appreciated.

So I bought mobile odin , put the relevant file on my phone and I was upgraded in under ten min Awesome app, sometimes its worth payin some money to get the job done

You'll have to make a tar of it. IZArc should work fine if you're on windows.

boot.img
cache.img.ext4
fat.bin
hidden.img.ext4
recovery.img
system.img.ext4

Sorry, I have no idea. What device is it?

magisk manager gives me a file named magisk_patched.img, but I need a tar file instea

I need a tar file because ODIN doesn't accept img files. Magisk used to be able to give a tar file, what happened?
As long as I'm unable to figure out how to make this work, rooting my device will be impossible. I don't want to give up now, not after getting through so many headaches...
Did you feed it a tar file? If you do it should give a tar file as output.

That's the problem, I only have a .img file, and have no idea how to turn it into a .tar file, or how to get one from my firmware. There are plenty of guides around on how to convert .img into .tar, but I don't know whether they work for this purpose. I would appreciate some guidance here.

Question How to unpack .img.lz4 files?

I've been looking through a couple of xda thread about it, found a few solutions. I managed to unpack from the .tar file, got the img.lz4 file and from that the .img and from .img to .img.ext4, but the .ext4 file is too small compared to the original .img file, so I guess the older SVAImgUnpack doesnt do the job correctly and can't open it with ext2explore. Is there any other software to use for this?
Nevermind, I've found a program for it.
