[Q] Any way to enable NFC while phone is in standby? - LG Optimus 4X HD

Hi is it somehow possible to port those modded Nfc.apks to our stock 4x HD phones?
I tried some of the modded Nfc.apk, but none of them seem to work
NFC is pretty useless when you can't use it while screen is off.
Can anyone help to get nfc working while screen is off?

tbh i would prefer NFC not detecting when the screen is off. imagine it going off accidentally in your pocket if so ever happens that your credit card or some other NFC 'device' activates it. the small trouble of unlocking the screen and tapping is worth the other troubles to me.
Not able to use it while screen off - we're not using the phone - is a good way to prevent negligence discharge =D army term =X

NFC is pretty useless without the option to have it always on. Google had this integrated, but changed some time ago. Most users try to get back to this state (AOSP, Cyanogen, etc.) or to let the user decide what he wants (off, activated when unlocked, activated when display on (and locked), activated when display off).
Why always on: It would be very nice to activate/deactivate things when you put your phone on your table etc without the need to unlock the phone first (then you can also push a button, so no need for nfc).
Although we have no useful NFC applications here (no payment for example), I don't think that always on is a security problem. You need to get really close to transfer something, so this shouldn't be a real security problem.

hi I have the same issue. NFC makes no sense when you have to unlock the screen first.
I have found this for the HTC One X.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1713354
Could this work on the 4X ?

I had a shot
This issue really irritates me, so yesterday afternoon I decided to run head on at a big learning curve and have a shot at decompiling/editing/recompiling the nfc apk myself.. I flashed my edited apk, turned of the screen scanned a tag and it worked! ..Assuming it worked I left it alone..
This morning I realised that my edit only work for 15 seconds after turning on the screen :/ LG have added their own edits on top of the android source, and honestly Im not even sure what for.. Something in that code is contradicting with the android code and I can't really afford to waste more time on it atm!!
I'm attaching my half working APK file if anyone fancies playing with it.. The key value to play with is POLLING_MODE: a value of 0x1 means NFC should work with the screen off and locked; a value of 0x2 means the screen must be on but can be locked; and 0x3 means NFC will only work with the screen on and unlocked. I also made some minor edits elsewhere.
Anyways, sorry about the long post! Just trying to give people hope, as this is most definitely do-able, and probably not too difficult either.. But not by me as I really can't be doing with getting my head around smali when I am supposed to be doing other things
Note:-
Attached file is intended for firmware v10f, just push the file to /system/app/Nfc.apk using abd.
If you can work out what changes about 15 seconds after the screen is turned off, I would love to hear it.
MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR ORIGINAL Nfc.apk BEFORE PUSHING THIS

You have to rename nfc.odex (nfc.odex.org or what you want), if you don't do this the code will be replaced with the one in the odex file after reboot.
There also an other thing with the deep sleep mode which starts after a few seconds (15-30s) . In deep sleep mode nfc is not working until the phone is waked up.
But except that your modification ist quite useful. Nfc is starting immediately after the screen is turned on and this is much better than the default behavior.

So. Which ROMs are you using??? Isn't anybody using a signature here?
If I get a fast answer I would try to make it with my usual method but you have to test then.

At the time of the last post on this thread we had no custom ROMs as there was no way to unlock the bootloader.

We have an unlockable bootloader. We have various ROMs based around Cyanogen 10.1 but with a couple of AOSP variants appearing over the last few days as well.

With the slim bean ROM it work.

[Q] 4 random questions...

I'm looking for a new phone, so if someone could answer these questions I would really appreciate it.
1. Is it possible to change the font size of the text on this phone for menus, sms, web browsing, apps etc.. everything in general?
2. Just something I heard not sure if it's true but, does the super AMOLED really use 2x the power for white color backgrounds than for ANY other color? That would be really bad for web browsing which I intend to use quite a lot.
3. How much does the battery last with only web browsing over wifi and music player in the background?
4. Any tips about Galaxy S or things you don't like about it? (whatever comes to your mind really)
thanks
Well , at least i got no problems with the baterry life at all , i can use it all day with music on and playibg games browsing etc... Also the super amoled is simply amazing. Overall i really like the phone at all points , the only disadvantages of it are the lag problem wich can easily be fixed and hopefully by samsung in the nearby future. Also its knowb that the gps is not working well but i didnt try this yet
be more specific.
the GPS works
the problem people are complaining about is that the GPS is not accurate enough for some people

Do you mean 'How long does it last with just some regular web browsing and music playing ?' or do you mean 'How long can I browse the net for before I kill the battery ?'
The first one: the battery will last you just fine to look up a few things here and there and generally be a daily driver.
The second one: A lot less than you think. You will get maybe 3ish hours with the screen lit between charges. The level of brightness and other things on the phone can change this, but seriously, don't be thinking about spending a great deal of time with the screen active unless you have some source of power.
Either way, this is not a problem with the SGS, ALL phones with big screens regardless of os or manufacturer have problems with battery life, at least in the sense that they never last as much as you'd want to.
As for any other tips and tricks:
Check your GPS when you get it out of the box, then apply one of the fixes if need-be. Some people find that out of the box, they either can't get a lock, or there is a lack of accuracy. I got the first problem, but the fix works fine and now I can satnav with the best of them. The accuracy isn't perfect, but good enough. Before I have been shown as driving 10 yards off the road in a field but it corrected within 30 seconds and its not like it became unusable. I have never had a problem with using the navigation. It has ALWAYS got me where I want to be.
Secondly, for gods sake use a lagfix, even if you don't get lag. As you put more apps on and fill the memory up more, you'll eventually get some slow down, so you may as well nip it in the bud.

Not sure how to interpret "phone closed". Screen off, yes it works. Phone in a case, yes it works. Phone off, no it doesnt work. If I've missed what you've meant please clarify.

My bad, I meant with phone OFF.
Well.. that's actually quite sad. Is it possible to make it work with an app or by rooting the phone?

[Q] I need help establishing a wakelock please?

Hello all. I am writing about my wife's Note1 (N7000, 16Gb).
The phone functions just fine except for one thing. At about 50% battery, it will just go to deep sleep and will require a long press power to wake up. Happens with any battery and have tried a few different ROMs (custom and stock). A SECOND Note we have (my sister's; I have a Note2) doesnt do any of this with same batteries and same ROMs, so does seem to be weirdness with this one.
I DO have a solution which has been proven to work with a scientific cause/effect relationship:
I installed THIS app from the PlayStore:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.wl
Now I dont fully understand wakelocks, but I reckoned the CPU was going into deep sleep so I set the wakelock to be FULL (see screenshot 1). This 100% solves the problem and the phone is fully normal now, and my wife says she cant tell any loss of battery life.
SO....
Looking to do one of two things:
1. is there a way we can have this app AUTORUN on boot cos she keeps forgetting to run it when she swaps battery (which is once a day cos she is heavy outside house user) and then wakelock not running then phone sleeps! DOH! If autoruns, then she can at least SEE the wakelock screen and press the lock to be active (we are still testing how LOW a wakelock can we get away with but for now using 7)
2. even better, is there a KERNEL I can flash her to that will give me same functionality so she never even needs the app? Something where I can set a minimum CPU level in a similar fashion and it is now a set-it-and-forget-it even surviving a reboot?
See pic2 for the stock ROM she is on now and is great. Given that phone is otherwise fabulous and all else is stable and functional, I would like to keep to this ROM if at all possible so as not to introduce new weirdness. Also, given that this is such an easy software fix, I am not looking to hardware repair the phone as just want to fix this and get on with life.
Hope this is enough info for an informative and educational discussion and looking forward to some good advice.
Thanks to all, and kind regards,
Asif
So are you wanting to prevent the phone from going into deep sleep?

Correct, yes. Need to stop the phone from sleeping so deeply that it is effecttively off now as wife misses critical reminder alarms, as well as phone calls etc. As it is (without the wakelock) the phone is pretty useless. WAS actually my sister's but had to swap and now SHE has the wife's old one. Sister is a surgeon and when phone was deeply asleep, hospital could never contact her so not good. So swapped and sister has wife's good one so that is off my back. Wife's (sister's old one) is here and easier to test out as sister lives in England and I am in Glasgow. Easier to take dodgy one and work on it here.
So need phone to remain functional until such time as battery is dead, like you would expect any normal phone to do.
So need wakelock to remain in force as described above, as WITH the wakelock active, the phone is perfect.
Thanks.
Is the phone rooted?
If so you could flash this mod i made. It prevents deepsleep.

Looks like the kind of thing I need, thanks.
Was very much not keen on switching ROMs tho as this one just working perfectly, and we all know that every ROM has it's quirks. Didnt want more headaches with the wife giving me daily anecdotes of weirdness!
What do you reckon would happen if I were to try flashing this on LSO ROM? I suppose the worst thing is a bork and then I just wipe and reflash LSO fresh? Is this just a typical CWM zip?
Or is there anything just like this (kernel or mod) that could be flashed on LSO?
Appreciate your time and help so far.
The mod is in the androidpolicy.jar so i doubr it will work. Worth a try as long as you backup first

Bump.
Any other ideas before I try the above?
Thanks.
Just a follow up if anyone is following this.
I DID flash the LSZ ROM and the zip patch and phone still died that night and failed to ring the morning's wake up alarm. To be honest, I am not sure what is going on with it. I have done a 'deep clean' (actually too much and I bricked it and then recovered it! Code Brown!!) and now flashed Slim Bean 4.2.2 to try something totally different and get away from a Sammy based ROM.
We shall see by tomorrow if phone can sleep at night without going into a coma, and then wife's wake up alarm can still ring.
If not then I think it is time for a service.
But wanted to come back on here and thank you for your time and efforts anway.
Kind regards.

Phone goes crazy when (I guess) overheated

Hi guys, I have annoying probnlem with my LG 4x... When I work little bit longer on my phone, it just starts to behave crazy. Screen starts to "touch himself" I just look at it and he starts to get in menus, opening pictures, closing apps, opening new ones... I just lock screen for 10 secs and than everything is fine for few minutes. Than same thing again. This happens with every ROM and every karnel I try til now. Works fine only with stock. I'm now on Beanstalk 4.4 and iodak 9.95. Thanks!!!

Its a weird issue, are you sure it works fine on stock? because it sounds like a digitizer issue to me (rather than software, since the rest of us dont have this issue)
im not sure where to begin lol, can you pull some logs? (dmesg and logcat)
Oh.. and I guessed it was only me.

No worries, nothing out of the ordinary in the logs, its looking more like hardware(hopefully im wrong). It might be worth testing a stock rom under the same conditions again, if there is no issue, then theres something weird going on. btw 50c is fine temp for cpu, around 75c is the limit.
Can you get a screen recording of it? (most 4.4 based roms have this functionality built in) this could be helpful also https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ds.cpuoverlay

[Q] Notification Light not working properly

Hey Folks,
got a little problem with my shamu Device
Currently im running CM12 Nightly on my Nexus 6. Mostly stock because I updatet it an hour ago. My Problem is that my Notification light is not working as it should. I can define colors for specific apps but if I get a notification, the LED isnt pulsating like it should. It stays on all the time. Is there any workaround for this problem? Maybe with Lightflow or Tasker (not into Tasker but when it´s working)
Thanks for any advices or answers
Greetings and have a nice day.
P.S.:
Nexus 6 running Cynaogenmod 12 from 2015-06-25 stock.

This is normal. You'll have to search but there are ways or ROMs that can get it to pulsate.
Isn´t there any patch or .zip file to modify this? I mean, it is also possible to flash double tap to wake for then nexus 6. Why not a pulsating LED?

Because there isn't the hardware to do it. The phone has to run a script or an app and keep the device awake in-order for it to tell the LED to turn off and turn back on via software. From what I have read, this isn't even always 100% effective, in that it will not always work properly. It also can potentially be a big drain on your battery, as the device will never be able to sleep while the LED blinks.
There is a thread here that discusses a few developers trying to figure out how to make it blink, and there was no success. There have been other threads too, but as far as I have seen there has been zero success in making it blink without an app/script or whatever it is.
Double tap to wake on the other hand was something Google put in themselves. They later removed it for the Nexus 6. The hardware is there for it to function, even though it doesn't work 100% of the time (sometimes you have to double tap twice or three times), which is probably why they removed it from the N6. I am pretty sure Google left it in for the Nexus 9. The Nexus 5 doesn't have the hardware to support it, so they don't get so lucky. There isn't a good way for the Nexus 5 to get double tap to wake either, because the only way to enable it is to do something like keeping things awake yet again, and from what I have heard it is a pretty big battery drain for that functionality.
Ahh okay I understand it.. but then it offers me a question why the Meanpop Custom Rom can handle it without big drain of battery.

I am not saying it is definitely a big drain on battery. I just said potentially it could be. There certainly were some people that claimed to have suffered poor battery performance after making it blink. Maybe we are talking the difference of a couple percent at the end of the day which you may not notice. But I am sure in some usage cases, that wouldn't be the case and it would be higher.
Does the meanpop dev release their source? I have no clue how the dev accomplishes it, maybe it is something you could make into a flashable zip and include with any ROM. Or it is something that is deeper than that, and likely will require you to build a ROM from source. If there is no source, perhaps try asking the dev.
Alternatively you can use whatever method some other people have used. I am pretty sure, I linked a couple of popular threads to you the last time you asked this question, here.

I don´t know how the dev did it. I just know that there is a data in your filesystem which defines everything. So It can be something more deeper than normal. But I think the dev of Meanpop won´t be doing a flashable zip if this would be possible because this feature makes his Custom Rom way more unique.
I´m not so into Tasker and Lightflow ... but maybe I will give it a try. Thanks for your help!

Is it possible to turn off the warning for battery 30 %?

IF there is something I really don't need then it is to know that there's about 1/3 of the power left in the battery! I would like to stop that warning, but I can't find anywhere to do that. Is it possible, or is it a quirk I'll have to live with on this phone? They all have some quirks, just in different areas.

Yeah, hope is always eternal, but I'm afraid that's not likely, since the accelerometer problem (which means that the screen won't follow the phone's direction, but stay in portrait mode) hasn't yet been fixed several months after the first reports. So the best would be if it was possible to fix through an app with a rooted phone or something like that.

I guess you should try a software reset.
Sent from my F8131 using XDA-Developers mobile app
How about three resets in two days? I bought the phone a week ago, after years of Samsung. Took me days to figure out how to root, and in the meantime it had upgraded itself to N because I didn't see what I clicked on (eye operation makes it a bit difficult these days). So I got it downgraded to MM, reset it, backed up the TA files, upgraded to N again, reset it and activated USB debugging for Flashtool, unlocked the bootloader, reset it again and finally set it up the day before yesterday. So I seriously doubt that another rest would change much.
Edit: Oh, and it may be different from phone to phone. According to your sig you do not have the same phone as me.

I have not updated my signature...I have the xp.
It is quite funny as all I know of have gotten their screen rotation fixed with the software update. I guess you are unlucky... Which nougat firmware have you installed?

I see. So it's the map not fitting the terrain.
Well, maybe I should try yet another reset. I have Titanium, so it's quite easy to get back to where I am now if it doesn't help. I have F8131_Telenor Mobil NO_1303-3350_39.2.A.0.361_R7C
So I did. Reset, and didn't do anything but log into my Google account. When I got through the setup process there was no rotation at all. Then I started thinking. Could it have anything to do with the rooting? I use TWRP and the ANdroPlus kernel, and I checked the AndroPlus website. Turned out that they had a new kernel out just yesterday, and the note got me thinking:
v19

That was the number on the firmware I'm using. So I flashed that, and bingo! Now I'm rotating! Well, at least my screen is, I don't even dare to think about rotating after yesterday's celebration. Keywords: Crayfish and shrimps, duck breast and chocolate mousse, followed by as many beers as my 50 year old body can take. And that's quite a lot! So today is not my most productive day this year... But thanks for getting me on the right track, if you knew it or not!
Edit: There's a new TWRP recovery as well for the phone, 3.0.3.0, dated a couple of days ago.

Hilarious ??? good that it worked out for you.
I am glad for the info as it then was kernel related.
Sounds like you had a great time last night. I hope you get a great year to follow ?
Enjoy your rotating Xperia ?

I have so say that I hope for a great year too, but it may be an intersting one!
Oh, and found out that it wasn't the kernel after all. It was regular rooting with SuperSU that broke the rotation, so now I'm trying the systemless root from phh. I'll let you now if that works, just to complete this part of the thread (which is really so off the original topic that it should have been split to another thread!).

Thanks man.. I have rooted a lot in the past but I don't want to unlock my bootloader anymore... Back in the days when phones were slower it made sense to root and mess with the config and custom roms.. But today... Not much, what is the reason to why you are rooting?

I root for two main reasons:
1. You can't do a really good backup in any other way than with Titanium backup, and I like to start semi-fresh every now and then when there's been too much bull tested and tried on the phone.
2, and this is the real kicker: For some idiotic reason a non-rooted Android phone can't do AirPlay in any way. I have a whole-house system that incorporates streaming over WiFi from my phone, and if I don't root, I can't use any of the streaming apps that support AirPlay (my favourite is AirAudio) to stream audio from whatever app I want to, since it can stream the actual phone audio. DLNA is totally useless because I have to use particular apps to stream with that, and they are not the apps I actually use. So basically Google has with a rather dumb choice forced me to root.

The Xperia backup does the trick for me... It saves data so I have a complete backup.
The second makes good sense, I don't use apple so I don't know the problem but hope it will work out in the future mate ?

Doubful. It's a proprietary Apple system so they won't support it in Android, and from what I've heard that's why they make it as difficult as possible to support it, so root is necessary. Anyway, I'm good with that, as long as I get root. It took me some days, but Sony's a new thing to me. Still love that ability to work with a wet screen. Samsung really has a problem there.
I only get the warning at 15%, this is where I set the auto stamina to notifiy me when stamina kicks in.
How weird. I have turned off that bull totally, don't need it. I'm never that far from a charger, in my boat, car, house or motorcycle. So no stamina mode at all, still it wines at 30 %.

try setting auto stamina at 15%, it's the lowest you can set, and see if the 30% will stop.
Good point, I'll try. I seldom let the battery go so low, while 30 is not that uncommon. I'll try and see what happens later today, thanks!
