Hell no! Flash stock rom with odin, root, install cwm recovery and you can recover any stock rom nandroid backup. This is the way to go if you try a custom rom, don't like it, and want to restore the nandroid backup of your previous stock rom.

Emm what rom is it?
CM10 - Use CM's JB CWM
Ultimate XXLSA - PhilZ-XXLSA-XJB
I think you mean about stock XXLSA 4.1.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
Just download a cm10 kernel, flash with mobile odin or pc odin, will raise flash counter but don't worry, then install rom through Cwm.

Stick it in a flowerpot, and apply some water. I advice watering it twice a day. After a week, you'll see the new grown roots.
Cheers, Markus
If u already have a custom rom then itz rooted

If you dont have CWM as a recovery, you will first need to flash a cwm recovery image through odin. [or heimdall]
If you do have CWM as recovery try to flash a SU package [Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip?]. That will root / install superuser on your device.
Once both are done you can proceed with backingup&& flashing new roms.
Goodluck.
