Hi all,
i got my sgs like 3 weeks ago and started to work with it. 1 week ago i saw the battery mod which i would have liked to install but couldnt.
Thing is, i'm on a I9000-HKYAMN 2.2.1, the recovery mode is 3e which wont let install zip bundles nor i have be able to get into clockwork, also tried to install the battery mod via adb but it just wont do.
I started lurking here, and have been taking a look to the kernels and roms avaliable.
After reading the FAQ i got to clear many things i didn't understand but still i wanted to ask for advice. I've seen many different ROM's and kernels but im still not sure.
I'd like to get the 2e version of recovery, or at least be able to get the clockwork's one, which would be far able enough to do the little things i'd like to.
Where would u recommend to start looking at?
thank you in advance
As I understand it, you just need to flash a kernel using ODIN that is CWM compatible. Such as SpeedMod, or SOK, or DamienGTO's...just about all kernels on XDA, really. Once the new kernel is flashed, install Rom Manager from the Market and have it flash your recovery with Clockwork.
The first kernel I flashed was SpeedMod, since his instructions for flashing via ODIN are very clear and very easy.
Good luck
Thank you very much. Just two more questions:
Does it matter the version of the kernel? (ex. my is XXX, the other is YYY. Is it a problem?)
Flashing the kernel makes everything on sgs fly away isn't it?
thank you very much
Assuming that you aren't root, you'll have to use Odin to flash a new kernel. I would recommend the speedmod kernel. Here: http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html you can get the drivers, Odin and the kernel. Following the guide it shouldn't take more than 5min to flash the new kernel. You will get the ClockworkMod recovery, which brings many tweaks and the ability to run zip files from the SD.

Just get the latest version (K13C at the moment).
What do you mean with "fly away"?
No, flashing the kernel won't wipe your data or apps...at least it never has for me. Just be sure you follow the directions on the SpeedMod site EXACTLY.
I know this is a very stupid question but I just want to make sure flashing with CWM is viable.
For the leaked stock ics 4.0 rom I know I should use odin to flash, but how about custom 4.0 rom like Romow? Should I use CWM to flash the zip file?
Thx~
ps: I am currently running rocketrom v19 with CWM
use CWM n flash zip

There are no instructions in romow's thread and that's why i am here to ask for any further instructions. I bet flashing a 4.0custom rom is similar to flashing Gingerbread rom. Am i right?
Also, some ppl claimed that I need to first flash the stock leaked 4.0 rom then have my phone rooted with CWM installed and finally flash custom 4.0 rom with CWM. Is that really necessary?

There are better roms now than ROMOW's one i think, try flashing Rocket Rom, or the new AOSP
From the instructions given in [02/24/12][Team Rocket ROM][open beta ICS v4.0.3][v1.5][15Tooglebar] daily ROM now! , it seems I really have to flash the leaked ics rom first before installing the rocketrom 4.0.3 rom, is that true? That means I cannot directly install the ics rocketrom from any gingerbread custom rom?

Follow carefully the instructiones if not you wont hace fullroot
PROBLEMS!
Just have to ask it right here as well...I went to romow yesterday for testing reasons (just flashed the zip in cwm) but I have to go back since there are too many bugs imao atm.
Just tried to go back to my CWM Backup....now I´m stucked at the bootanimation!
Do you guys know what could be the reason here? And what I could do to get my nandroid backup working again?

Did you flash 4.0.3 directly from gingerbread rom? BTW I've heard many people say their phones were stuck in the bootscreen(The samsung N7000 with no boot animation) when they tried to go back from ics to gingerbread. Seems this is a common problem....

Yes, I came directly from GB!
If you can load the boot animation that means ur phone is not bricked. You should try to download a stock gingerbread rom from dr ketan's post and flash it by odin pc.

When going back to GB, i kinda 'restart' the whole process by going back to Stock ROM via Odin, and redo the root and CWM.
Else, there are strange quirky issue ex. CWM just hangs while wiping the phone.
Hey Kelvin Fong & J.wong, thank you guys for your support!
Sorry for noobing around from now on...I´m not exactly the newest guy when it comes to these flash-things, but I have to admit that I´m kind of confused now...
I tried to find dr. ketans thread (this one?) but I´m not getting into his post (sorry for that, as I said: I´m confused!):

If You have Root + CWM - then first find out original stock kernel (zImage file)
Now place this file in zImage folder, n repeat procedure(Initial CFRoot Flasher), which you have done at time of pushing CWM by selecting I am rooted already
Now unroot with above said unrooting tool.

The first thing I´ve made evertime in the past was to read the full-noob tutorials...for some reason, I can´t find something like that for the note!
May I kindly ask you if you know a thread were these things (and perhaps the results after going back to stock) are explained from scratch again? Just want to understand what I have to do and how, it´s getting harder to find some information that are not based on years of flash-training

Should be this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997).
Firstly, download one of the roms from [Older ROMs (Directly Rootable)].
Secondly, follow the [Installation Guide For Older ROM ], the one using odin pc.
You may see below another flashing method using mobile odin, but that doesn't suit you since that one requires your phone rooted before and will keep your root after flashing. The one with odin pc will wipe out all your data and apps(of course not your SD card) and also unroot your phone. That means your CWM and root will all be gone and you have to follow another post to root it again(now this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)
this one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997)teaches you how to flash a rootable gingerbread rom, but not rooted. This one(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360)shows you how to root your phone and install CWM. I think these two posts are the best tutorials you are looking for.
I think you should download this >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=907734&d=1329574136
This one is better organized.
Thanks mate! Saved it to my desktop...but finally i was able to manage the problem by simply flashing a *fresh* RocketRom again (?!). I thought it would be worth a try...
Anyway: Thank you very much for your support, it´s good to still meet that friendly kind of people with patience here on the board (it´s getting less these days) hope i´ll be able to return the favor in future
You are welcome! Please note your binary counter may increase if you flash a rooted rom like rocketrom you've mentioned above directly via odin.

As far as I remember I made my very first steps with odin after I reveived my note (root, cwm)...rocket has been flashed by using cwm. But yes, my binary counter increased definitely...
...I do have a USB Jig, but in some was I am kind of afraid of going trough this! To fumble around in pure darkness...hmmm i don´t know
Have you tried it yourself?
Actually I've got a yellow triangle together with increased binary counter as I followed another tutorial guide(I should follow dr ketan's guide before).
I think removing the counter with a jig is way too dangerous for me so I don't want to risk it. Simply remove the counter only when you really need to bring your phone to samsung because maybe you don't even have to claim the warranty at all.
Hi All, I've had this Samsung Galaxy Note for a few weeks now and have read over the rooting posts several times. Firstly I am 2.3.6, I realised I cannot directly root this phone and will need to downgrade, I've found the links with info and stock roms... however what I am not sure about is the specific version.
I really don't want to brick the phone!!!
Baseband Version: N7000XXLA4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35-7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
[email protected]#2
I did find an LA6 rom but could not find one with the same modem version. Also going back to the old directly rootable roms, there is a huge choice, none of which match what I have so far... so really just wanting to know to work out which one to pick while keeping root and getting to version I have now??
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Is there a specific reason for keeping the reason you have?
The reason am asking is because you can use the pre rooted ROMs in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
And you will end up with a newer ROM and root..
Modem is not an issue, you can flash the type you want and suits you best after accomplishing root..
No I guess not... just all is working well as it is but was just concerned about general compatibility but will give the europe one a go. Thanks
Aztec_Uk,
Did you manage to root your Note ?
I'm on the same build as you and would like to get rid of all my bloat ?

Hi, have to say I haven't worked up the courage to do it yet... I wish I could root and do a backup before playing... but the only way is to either downgrade as in other post or use these pre-rooted roms... this debating what to do... I really don't want to brick it or goto something I cannot roll back, as it works great at the moment but obviously bloatey and no root.....
Take courage!
@Aztec_UK and DblCng, just over a week ago I was where you are. Take heart, if you encounter problems and post them here clearly, there are some really expert and generous XDA members here who will help you. I will even try myself if I see you encountering something I ran into.
I opted for the Chainfire method and in this thread. starting at post #1170 you can read an almost blow-by-blow account of what I encountered and the help I got. Thanks list in post #1220. I didn't expect it to be all plain sailing and it wasn't. I do advise you to make sure you have enough time before you start - in the end it took me most of 3 days (and nights). Another tip I haven't found anywhere (though it's almost certainly here somewhere) is to forward your calls to somewhere else before you start. You don't want people ringing you on the phone when you're in the middle of rooting it.
My Note is now rooted and running just fine, and I'm having a great time zapping bloatware and foiling phone-homers.

Hi syncopath, thanks for replying... seems like a very friendly and helpful place.
I have a work colleague who was also like you and like I am now... then to get proxy support he rooted.... Then he took a while to eventually take the plunge and go for ICS 4.04... It was this week he came into my office and said... I've done it... sat there for 10 mins crossing fingers.
He had a slightly older stock rom on his note, it meant he could do a direct root without flashing and he also was able to do a good backup via root method...
I think the thing holding me back is that fact I can't make that solid back... I have to flash first... believe me I have hacked about with lots of phones and firmwares in my time, HTCs, Blackberrys, Nokia and done a jailbreak on an iPhone 4S... somehow this time around it's taking me longer to work the courage up, I've read a few posts on here.. of people ending up with a brick and no warranty... I just dread this situation... or if something should go wrong later I'd want to un-root so I had warranty... Any advice what any of you guys would do in my situation.. believe me I want root and to try ICS... I am twitchy! - just a bloated stock rom with no root is better than a brick/paper weight!!

I have the same model with LA4 modem and LA6 kernel. Use the XEU file from the pre rooted thread here as posted above, works perfect. The modem in that file is indeed an LA4, but like matius44 says you can flash any modem. For no wipe only flash the PDA file with PC Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
After that you can download mobile odin pro from the market and flash the ICS repack leak. Make sure to select the 3 root options in mobile odin before going to the repack or you will lose your root. The LA4 modem seems fine in ICS, but i did try the newest modem as well.
I followed the instructions for a clean install in the ICStunner thread. Make sure to read down to post #4.Stick with 1.4.19 if you choose stunner. Awsome smooth stable rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552554
It's safe to flash back to that GB pre rooted rom from ICStunner as well.
Go for it, my phone has never been better and ICStunner is amazing.

Hi Kushracer
Your post was well put out and friend, will tick thanks button in a minute... ok, I followed step one.. put into download mode, already downlodeaded the rom you suggested before a few days ago... and PC Odin too... So, I did as you suggested and flashed just the PDA part... crossed fingers, it rebooted and I can confirm thanks to you I am rooted!!!
Before I go for next step I am going to ensure I do backup everything as much as possible and will be trying ICS tomorrow!!!
Your right I feel so much better... that was not that bad... and just the PDA section is replaced the same with Rooted!... Your advice did help me get the confidence to hit the button... Well pleased
Will keep you posted tomorrow on my next step... for me this is enough for the minute, got more time tomorrow so will have a long backup/ICS session then
Thanks
Aztec_UK... now with rooted Note!
Well this time yesterday I had a rooted Samsung Galaxy Note.... Now... not only do I have full Root, I now have CWM, ICS 4.04 and LP6 kernel... phew!! thanks to all for your help
Cool
Sweeeet! Hope you enjoy it as much as me. Just waiting on the official release so I can run a modded version of that now
On another note--- Backup your EFS partition! The stunner thread had the info so I hope you did that just in case.

Ok first of all I did follow the part of bodivas reply to me (thanks again!) I used one of the Stock Odex Pre Rooted ROMs..
found here:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
I chose:- 3*Files No-Wipe N7000XXLA6_N7000OXEULA1_XEU Europe (03/02/2012)
downloaded and flashed via PC Odin... Crossed fingers and it worked, I had FULL root!
Then I Followed part of the second link as:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552554 I followed the part about backing up my EFS (highly recommended!!) - that was as far as I went that night..
The following day I spoke to a work collegue... and went a different root to flash ICS.. I downloaded ICS Stunner 1.4.19 then used this method:- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614443 You must follow it step by step and I had to do a CF-Root to get CWM and then after that flashed Abyss to get RedPill... from there I flashed ICS and LP6 rooted kernel..
However I have noticed I do have root but I cannot write or mouse system for write access... so I have not got full root... I have re-read what to do about this and may need to reflash a different rom, however I already tested re-flashing first link with PC Odin which gives me GB Full root after ICS, so I am gonna play for a bit and retry this later... but you do have a quite safe roll back..
I was scared as hell to do any of this and a few days ago had a stock Samsung and did not want to root or reflash... I think as long as you follow instructions, check other users posts on how they get on, make sure your battery is charged, use a UPS or laptop with good battery (incase of power cut) then you should be ok, but you do take a risk of ending up with a brick, my biggest fear... so far trying to get full root I've re-done this 3 times!
Happy I did and think it's worth it as this rom is nice, thinking of trying 1.4.26 soon...
Hope this helps and good luck...
Same procedure... with ICS 1.26.1 .... now full root! - But nice safe way of trying ICS...... Looks like I gottta get the hang of Mobile Odin....
2 days ago I was scared but now I have the confidence to flash the rom on SGN
thanks for your info, i was very flash happy when on desire z i have flashed almost all the roms. but galaxy note seems slight different, but glad to see at least you get root work, i might just root and remove bloatware first and see how smooth it is, will think about flashing rom later might even just wait for ota ics

Hello,
Just a bit of background - have had my galaxy I-9000 for 1-2 years now, had been running dramatically slow, so upgraded it to 2.3.6 (GINGERBREAD.XWJW6) & it runs a lot faster. Unfortunately, it has many more "optus apps" which I detest.
I'm looking to "reboot" the phone - which from reading some threads means "rooting" the phone. My questions relating to this are:
1. If I 'root' the phone, will my contacts/messages be retained, or is it a complete wipe of the phone
2. How exactly do I 'root' the phone? Is there a thread that shows you (I've seen threads, but they are technical, & I become confused when they start mentioning roms etc)
Furthermore, as far as I've read, after you 'root' your phone, you have to install a ROM, for example "SLIM ICS" (what's ICS stand for?)
I've also read, but I'm not sure that because the firmware I've upgraded to is relatively new - that 'rooting' is not yet available? Is this also true?
Thanks for your help =)
1. Rooting doesn't wipe anything. Maybe cache or/and dalvik cache uf you flash with cwm.
2. Look for cf-root kernel thread.
There is a step-by-step guide and the needed rooted kernels.
You will need, Odin, the kernel.tar file and the phones Downloadmode (volume down + home + power)

Hello again,
Well my phone seems to have shat itself? It comes up with the "black screen of death," but I have been able to get to the downloadable screen.
I wanted to know how to recover it, I am no tech wizard, but this is the stuff I have:
- ODIN v1.85
Please tell me what else I need, I'm guessing a ROM?
I will be forever grateful, thanks
if you have the download mode, you have to flash properly the GB JVU, then to flash the CF root for JVU to become root and have access to CWM. then you can upgread to ICS

good luck
Thank you!
I'm following it step by step (downloading the XJVU 200meg file at the moment)
I will let you know about my progress
you need the three files, for phone, pda and csc. And you also need the pit file, and the cf_root file.
So an update!!!
Black screen of death, diverted!!! (phew)
Flashed to 2.3.6 XXJVU
Rooted it as well
Now looking for a ROM to put in...
Now because I'm on 2.3.6, does that mean I can only get the "SURFACE" ROM? What's the advantage of changing ROMS anyway?
Cheers

If you want to flash slim just go to slim website, and follow the instructions, take your time, and make sure you read and follow the instructions, any problems then post on the slim thread, I will keep an eye out for you
I'm glad for you thiolus. Cm9 or slim are good. I'm on cna by franzy and i think it's a very good rom on ics
Another update guys!
Well I flashed it, then rooted it (see now I'm using proper lingo =P) XXJVU
Then finally put on CM7 which makes everything faster, for now I think it is okay, although I think I will update it later as I want more whizzbang!
Another problem I encountered was getting all the contacts, kies saved as SPD file which wasn't recognised - had to save it as VCR/vcard file, then merge all of it together into one file - I learned how to use DOS too!
So literally 8 hours later (slept at 430 am, now its 730 =P) this is it for now, thanks everyone for helping so much

Hi. I'm 13 years old and a bit of a n00b so sorry about that, but in a years time my parents will let me buy a new phone for £100 (about $153) or less. So, I saw that several i9000s were being sold used and refurb from amazon UK, so I am thinking about going for that when the time comes. The only thing about it though is that it is only updatable to 2.3.6 gingerbread. I have rooted all the android devices I own so far (Samsung Galaxy Apollo I5800, LG E400 and Nook Simple Touch), and have recently installed cm9 nightly on the lg e4000 and a port of cm 7.2 RC called Kyrillos Rom (great rom, kudos to the developer) and have loved it. So, if I was buying the galaxy S, one of the first things I would want to do with it is to install cm10.1, stable, which is officially compatible with this phone, or whatever the latest version is at time of buying is. Anyway, to do this I need CWM Recovery, and to get that I have to root. I have looked online on many sites including these forums, youtube, etc and the main way to root this phone seems to be to flash the cf-root kernel, using Odin, for gingerbread, or use an update.zip or superoneclick if its running eclair. However, many people have said that they got boot loops using cf-root, and I'd rather not risk that. Also, a couple of extra complications, 1) since I am buying it off of amazon I will not be able to return it because a root method will not work, 2) Because I am buying it in a years time I do not want to be stuck in 2.3.6 when 5.0+ is out.
So, I wanted to ask a question. Could I use a guide like one of these to root my phone. They are essentially thee same thing, just using different root exploits. Would ONE of these definitely work with any of the official baseband versions, because I want to be pretty certain when I buy it that I can get JB.

or something like the above two but using a different exploit (download or guide link please)
I'm not too uncomfortable with basic cmd and adb so it seems the best way for me, as I would be uncomfortable if confronted with boot loops.
It would be great if someone actually has used one of these methods on their stock i9000 devices before. It will have to work with whatever the latest official kies or ota update is because there is no telling which android version my used/refurb device will come with.
I would be really, really grateful if I got a definite solution to this. Thank you in advance for helping and I'm very sorry about the long post.
ps on my lg e400 i tried superoneclick, the run.bat and all the other one click root methods. None of them worked, but manually rooting it5 using adb, cmd and the rageagainstthecage exploit worked perfectly.
too much to read mate, why dont u simplify things here.
bootloop will occur if u flash wrong cfroot its common, no panic, juz find a suitable one n flash it again, ur fone will be rooted
da important thing here is da info of ur device, see setting for info on build number, ur imei, android version, n etc n copy it somewhere, thats da references for knowing ur region base n fone info. but make sure ur own device version before do it (i9000/i9003/i9001/shw m110s/ or etc!)
upgrading also need some confirmation, u can follow any ways in xda provided each of them was doing it with their own experience, but da important thing is u know what u re trying to do, thats all

So, the people who complain in comments are flashing the wrong one? Is there one for every model (I'd be getting international but I don't know what baseband etc)
Also, I'd love to know if there's any way you can just go back to basics and root using a command line. I'd just feel slightly more comfortable doing it that way.
Sorry about the last long post and thanks for replying so soon
Sorry, one other n00b question
I can look at this page but I do not know which download link applies to which software version, baseband version, etc.

you can use an app to root i9000 or with PC or with a semaphore kernel even , look in My Android collections (link below) under unlock and root section
that looks brilliant. I assume its the link under 2e recovery for the 'i9000 root update.zip' on mediafire.com. I just have a few basic questions to ask.
a) Does this work on 2.3.6 value pack?
b) I'm in the UK so I should be able to update from whatever it comes with (eclair, froyo) to 2.3.6 officially, either OTA or with kies, right?
c) Does this work for all baseband/firmware versions?
d) Can I install this as update.zip with stock samsung recovery?
e) I assume this installs su, busybox and the Superuser apk, does it?
f) After rooting could I download rom manager and use it to flash the appropriate version of cwm recovery?
Sorry about all the n00b questions, but thanks
a) Does this work on 2.3.6 value pack?
sure, but less work involved when you use Framaroot or Z4root app ( its just install app and you are rooted)
b) I'm in the UK so I should be able to update from whatever it comes with (eclair, froyo) to 2.3.6 officially, either OTA or with kies, right?
yep
c) Does this work for all baseband/firmware versions?
Nope...mostly for latest Gingerbread...you may need to find earlier versions of it for earlier ROMs
d) Can I install this as update.zip with stock samsung recovery?
yep, IF you have 2e recovery, but like I said, just install app and you are done
e) I assume this installs su, busybox and the Superuser apk, does it?
SU and superuser are the same, it will install that, busybox you install by downloading from google
f) After rooting could I download rom manager and use it to flash the appropriate version of cwm recovery?
yep, and can also be done by Flashing a kernel with CWM or installing Flasify or Mobile Odin to Flash whatever you want.
sure, but less work involved when you use Framaroot or Z4root app ( its just install app and you are rooted)
OK, thanks so much for this. So, to confirm, I can just use z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953?vm=r&s=1) or framaroot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276?vm=r&s=1) on all versions of baseband provided I am running firmware version 2.3.6. One or the other will work, just by installing the APK and tapping some sort of root button. I am familiar with z4root because it worked to root my samsung i5800 when it was on eclair. However, it would not root it after the official upgrade to froyo. Is this the same issue that the galaxy s is faced with. Will I have to somehow downgrade it to eclair if it comes from froyo or gingerbread? Also, framaroot does not say that the galaxy s is supported. Does it work?
Also, one other thing. No offence to chainfire (the root is very impressive and I wouldn't know where to start in making one) but why is it that all the tutorials I have recently seen are using odin and cf-root not z4root or framaroot. Is there a catch, or something.
Anyhow, thanks very much for answering. Sorry about yet more n00bish questions.
ps Also, just for the record, what is 2e recovery. Is it stock?
I can just use z4root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953?vm=r&s=1) or framaroot (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276?vm=r&s=1) on all versions of baseband provided I am running firmware version 2.3.6. yep, but stick to Framaroot a it was only released in 2013, whereas Z4root was in 2010

The above link you posted will tell you it is compatible with 19000

Don't waste your time downgrading, upgrade to gingerbread and than root with framaroot
Also, framaroot does not say that the galaxy s is supported. Does it work?
Read the link you posted it is compatible with i9000 and users have used it successfully
Also, one other thing. No offence to chainfire (the root is very impressive and I wouldn't know where to start in making one) but why is it that all the tutorials I have recently seen are using odin and cf-root not z4root or framaroot. Is there a catch, or something.
Nope Framaroot only came out February 2013, so very few are aware of it and CF rooting kernel was sort of the first to come out and semaphore rooting kernel later, and is also popular kernels have added features, where rooting apps only place SU into your system.
ps Also, just for the record, what is 2e recovery. Is it stock?
yep, but not all phones have 2e recovery, they mostly have 3e recovery, which does not give you the option to flash updates
Sorry about the Framaroot thing, I missed the galaxy S when scrolling down fast - derp. So, its as simple as downloading the APK, transferring it to the phone, installing it, tapping the right root method, rebooting, installing rom manager or something like it, flashing cwm recovery with it, downloading the latest version of cm, making a nandroid backup and flashing the .zip from the sd card using cwm to get cyanogenmod on this phone.
Also, a question of opinion, next year I will have a £100 budget to get a new sim free or payg smartphone with. I will see if I can get a refurbished s3, but it probably will not hit this price point. Do you think the i9000 refurbished would be a good choice for this budget, particularly if I then root it with framaroot and installing cm
Thanks for all your help and for the quick reply.
Sorry about being a n00b, I am learning...

yep, these days its that simple but was not like that before

well, next year is still to come , so the way things are going, you might even get an S3 for that price

Well hopefully I can get an s3 :fingers-crossed:, but whatever I get, the S is an awesome phone. We wouldn't have the nexus s, s2, s3, s4 etc without it.
Thanks for helping me, I'm not scared of Odin, but I tend to try to avoid it if there's another possible way.
I think, for someone like me, who is probably not going to stay stock for more than about a week, its better to get an older high-range phone than a brand new low range phone.
So, I think that's probably the end of this thread. Thanks to everyone who helped me.
