Hi guys and girls!
Hope you are all doing well. Anyway, I rooted yesterday and am running a new kernel (speed mod k13 I believe) anyway. What I am after now, is as the title says, a light, fast rom with decent battery life. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions or experiences and could suggest something. Would a CYANOGEN from work? When I had my galaxy s I was using 7 and found it really good. But are there others?
Cheers!
Oliver

cyanogen will indeed work as will paranoid android charack,s,rocket rom if its lite you want then look for a rom with aroma installer so you can install what you want
Cheers!, really liking the look of paranoid android, especially the hybrid roms! it has been a goood while since i flashed a rom, so need to figure out what i have to do again. lol, thanks, if you can provide any tips on moving to this rom from stock ics with speedmod kernel, it would be helpful! Thanks.

Yes, JB referred in the guide are all JB/CM10 based roms.

As long as you are on safe kernel you don't have to worry about anything or to revert back to GB. Just keep flashing rom with full wipes. Its enough for you.....
So, i am trying to back up through CWM on hydracore, it gets soooo close to the end and then says there was an error backing up the data, any ideas on what this is or a remedy for it?
I dont really want to flash a rom without doing the backup... even though in the past, i have done (old phone) is it imperritive to make a backup?

What exactly you want to backup from old rom, apps? If so then use titanium backup. I never backup whole rom as it hardly takes 15-20 minutes to setup rom if you have backup of apps.

Yes, as with any AOKP/ CM9 based rom..
There are alternative apps that could be used.
Otherwise, there are some excellent choices when it comes to Touchwiz-based roms as well.
Some are available themed to the AOKP look, if you prefer.

you have been here longer than i am, so i would think that you are supposed to read and use the search functions of this forum than just wait up for answers from other people that may not come at all.
if you are afraid to root, go no further. if you take the risk, then go all the way and test all the available roms and decide which one suits your taste. it's your phone, it's your risk.... do not blame anyone if something bad happens, because if somebody answers your question "which one would you recommend" and somebody does recommend a specific rom, and you BRICKED your phone in the process... you will curse whoever gave you that suggestion.
I found Rocket Rom v22 used with franco v6 kernel very fast and stable. I got my best benchmark scores using this setup.
Now on Midnote ICS and while very smooth it doesn't have the same benchmark scores. (Not that they mean much as it feels quicker in daily use).
To sync FB pics with contacts install FB app then go to settings/accounts and sync, add FB account. It will ask you what to sync eg all contacts etc

Welcome!
That is a nice TW (stock samgsung software) based rom, with some tweaks and a diferent kernel you can make it really fast.
On the other hand, as you said you want it to look good I'd recommend you to use VengeanceNote TW, as it's MIUI over the TW base. It is fast. It is beautiful. I'm not sure about the hebrew support tough, you might want to head to the thread and ask there. The dev, Gerrett, is preetty nice and wil most definitely help you as much aas he can.
If you want to use an AOSP ( Google software ) I'd most definitely recommend you Asylum + NX Kernel. This is as fast as my note has ever been. Don't worry about everyone on the thread being crazy tough. Thay are nice after you get used to them
Anyway, good luck with your phone You'll love it

You're lucky then, I had FC on all ROMs i've used on my SGS
I've used VengeanceNote for a long time. It is very stable indeed. Only problem i could remember is that it had a duplicated root manager app, but if you opened the right one you would have no problem at all. I'm just waiting for a custom kernel to support it so i can jump back to it.
Never used Carbon Rom itself, but from what i've experienced with this all-in-one roms, they're not very stable.
I'd say if you're interested on AOSP Asylum is the way to go. It's really clean and fast. And if you don't like the all black look you can always install CM10 themes

Nop, you can use phlz for flashing, but Asylum will overwrite it with CM10 kernel. But i recommend flashing NX after you flashed the rom. It has OC support and GPU clock control. It makes things really smooth.
About the themes you can get them on play store or on some threads here on xda. A quick google search for "CM10 theme" will show you lots of results.

Ummm, actually no,my dad just recommended it to me he said PhilZ is one of the best kernels developers out there,
and that its very safe to use his recovery (maybe I didn't understand correctly but I heard there was a problem some time ago with

He also said speedmod is great, but I dunno that guy or his kernels lol.

Indeed he's a great dev, and he saved many of us from bricking our devices
On stock samsung kernels, there's a bug, that when you wipe your data partition on recovery it corrupt's the memory chip, rendering it useless. So if you are going to use stock roms on your phone, either don't wipe or stick to safe kernels.
On the other hand, the AOSP kernels don't show such behaviour and are generally safe. So if your going with Asylum, don't worry. You're safe.

The instructions are here - http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/installation. Make sure you read the page fully, including the warning in bold at the top, and that you understand everything before you start.
The instructions make sense to me, but I'm used to flashing. The instructions are not a full flashing tutorial and they only cover the key points specific to Slim Bean. Steps which would apply for all custom ROMs include....
1. You will need to install a custom recovery on your phone as the instructions cannot be followed using the standard Samsung recovery. This would be true for any custom ROM. There are various options for installing custom recovery. Telling you what to do is outside the scope of the ROM developer and the installation instructions for the ROM. Personally I install Philz kernel onto my stock ROMs in order to gain custom recovery features. Now that I have a custom recovery installed this is not a step I need to repeat every time I want to flash a new ROM. It's also why ROM installation instructions don't bother to mention this - it's assumed as a given.
2. It would be a wise precaution to create a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. A custom recovery will let you do this. While recommended, it is not a requirement for a new ROM install so it may or may not get mentioned in the instructions.
3. You will need to download the new ROM and Gapps to the phone. I download to external storage (the micro SD card).
4. Worth repeating - wiping/flashing always carries the (small) risk of something going wrong, which could in the worst case destroy your phone. Less dramatic problems might be boot hangs or boot loops. I've only got into a boot loop once, and that was because I tried to short cut the instructions. Fortunately I dug myself out of that hole by flashing a stock Samsung ROM using PC Odin. The risk is yours if you want to go ahead.
That's the best I can do to help. If anyone else cares to chip in to cover anything I've missed then feel free.

Sometimes on my i9070 I experience some lag. Sometimes much, sometimes a little. I've read some posts here to look into some issues with this phone and came across something (a kernel I believe) called CoCore. It seems it is used for overclocking the processor for a nice performance boost.
At the moment the phone is running unofficial cyanogenmod 11. Will it be wise or helpfull to install this CoCore on the device? And what are the risks involved?
Cocore kernel is for stock ROM. CM 11 has its own kernel that is based on Cocore too. Try using Greenify app maybe on the apps you don't use often that might run in the background. Search for the app on Playstore or here on xda.

Hmm, so what do you think gives a smoother phone? Stock with cocore or a custom rom?

If you're on stock rom, try lagfix free app on play store. It helped me.

I notice it too. So it seems that it is not a placebo.
Do you think it's better then custom roms or stock rom with CoCore?

Indeed, as demonstrated in my latest two posts of this topic.
No miracle, but it helps to speed memory write operations in different situations.

Lagfix is not a kernel, just an app to run regularly (manually if you use free version).
Personally I think that, if you don't have the patience to customize Stock Rom with Cocore kernel properly, you should try some Android 4.4 Custom Rom until you find a good one for you.
I keep using Stock Rom just for one reason, I customized it too much and I'm too lazy to start again.
Thanks a lot for all of your answers. I think I will keep using this room I'm using right now and when I get bored I'll try a version of jb with lagfix, or maybe I will just use stock with CoCore. The rom I'm using now sure is very stable.
Everything goes to show that it's all good and just a matter of personal taste. But some roms are definitely better than others.
room you are using

At the moment it has cyanogenmod 11 (unofficial), with flattington theme. This doesn't make the phone faster, but it doesn't have hangups or lag like touchwiz. It's a very nice looking theme!
