i installed cyanogen 6.1.0 RC1 after which i am unable to using wifi tethering. someone suggested me to use the wifi tethering app for root . but that also hasnt worked.
my laptop connects but i can browse any websites.
Me too... Same problem (no data transfer showing in phone)
I wonder if T-Mo have disabled some how?

There is no reason to use WiFi tether for root, when it's implemented much better in the OS itself.
As I wrote before in another thread, there might be another APN that needs to be used to allow tethering and full internet access.
In T-Mo case - I don't know what might be the reason.
I'm only using the native tether, or at least trying, but it doesn't seem to be working as of this morning...

Anyone using NC to tether to a android phone?
So I only have luck with Nexus One, but HTC phones are not working.
It's connected to the wifi hotspot of my desire HD, but the wifi is white in color (connecting to my home wifi, it's green). I guess white means it is not connected to the internet.
I have searched around, threads talk about NC not able to see adhoc networks, and I tried, but it didn't work.
Anyone else facing the same problem and managed to solve it?
ROM: CM7-RC4
Most modern smart-phones can do an infrastructure tether, instead of adhoc.
What tethering app are you using on the phone? is it secured?
If your phone only supports adhoc, it was perm disabled in one of the recent nightlies but you can re-enable it. Try searching the development fourm for "Adhoc enable"
I'm sending you this with my Nook via wifi-tether on my Droid Eris. Both are running CM7...makes things easy peasy.

My Nook is running CM7-RC4. My Desire HD isn't rooted, still running its stock wireless hotspot application. Everything else can connect to my desire HD's wireless hotspot, except my nook.
@deadbot1
Maybe that's why it works on my friend's nexus1, it is running CM7-RC4 as well.

I do not know for sure, but you may want to look into rooting your phone and trying different Wifi tethering apps. My phone is by no means high-end (LG Vortex) and I'm using the WiFi hotspot widget, from the market, to tether to my nook.
Running Droid X with Teamblackhat 3g Hotspot patch. (easily findable on google) Tethering laptops, Nook Color, even a colleague's Iphone has worked flawlessly. Not sure if it's verizon exclusive though.
my htc hero is tethering just fine to my nook color. Im using the wireless tether app from market, might as well just root your phone.
No problems tethering to a Droid 2 Global running Fission ROM and using wireless-tether for root.
NC is running CM7 with Tablet Tweaks testing rom (latest plus customizations.)
No problems tethering my nook with my inspire

I tether all the time using MobileAP. Built in tether function on froyo and up. SGS Captivate here. Won't work with apps like android tether. They use adhoc.
I tether off my evo as my nooks only source of Internet.
Sz rc2d.
Oh well, still unsuccessful in finding a non-intrusive solution for this.
I'm using a Nokia E72 with the JoikuSpot application which creates an ad-hoc network and getting mixed results. It was working on the train earlier but now it's failing to find the network. I'm using CM7 RC4.
Pretty seamless with google nexus s to tether wirelessly. That is sure to change when gayTT takes over.

I figured with all the people who managed to tether, it could be a problem with the wifi hotspot app that HTC has bundled with their stock rom.
The weird thing is while clearly browsers, market don't work, gtalk & gmail still works.
I am unable to get my nook connect to an adhoc network broadcast from Ubuntu. It used to work fine under Windows but now that has stopped working as well. What settings are we supposed to use? Ive looked around and all people say is "create an adhoc network and connect to it"
Im running Honeycomb v4 on the emmc of my Nook Color
I am running tether from my droid 1 which only does ad hoc. The original wpa_supplicant on the nook can only read infrastructure. Don't remember where I found the one I have, but it works pretty well.

I'm interested in getting my wife's Nook Color to work with my HTC Hero. What version of wi-fi tether are you using? Have you done anything to the Nook to get it to work?
Thanks.

Just rooted my Revolution today and installed wifi tether....the main reason I upgraded from my Dinc for 4G!!! Surprise!!! Doesn't work. Does anyone know if there is a reason I cannot tether my revolution with this app?
haven't gotten it to work for me either.
I'm assuming the dev hasn't updated it for LTE. Have you tried turning off 4g and trying it w/ 3g only?
You don't need to root. The free 4g hotspot will spit out 3g also if your not in a 4g area. So until July 6 i think, just use the Verizon provided app. I use it all the time and it works perfect.
Little Buddy Sr.
I haven't gotten mine to work either. It rather frustrating. I didn't realize there was free hotspot until july 6th? That's news to me.
actually, the stock app does seem to work for me. damn fast, too.
wifi Tether works too, i have it using wpa_supplicant with ASCII WEP, for some reason.
after connecting my cr-48 to it i got about 5mbps down, which is better than nothing.
random issue: bluetooth kept cutting out when using the tether.
Ok, several things.
I tried changing the access to ASCII WAP. Great. That got me to be able to enter a code. Its the validation that is still the problem. The status bar on my computer just sits there and says connecting to connection.
When the connection shows up in my wireless connection list, it has the 3 computer icons connected with arrows, instead of a signal reading. Could that be a problem? I guess its an ad-hoc network? I'm using WIFI Tether version 2.0.7 on a ASUS Windows 7 64 bit machine with an intel Centrino Core 2 processor
I know we have the 4g hotspot until july 6th, but I'm really hoping to find a solution or steps to a solution on this soon. I had Zero problems with 2 Incredibles.
As an aside, it also doesn't pair with my IPAD Wifi (I know, I know, its an apple product, but it was cheap).
Thanks everyone for you help!! I appreciate it.
wifi tether for root users (restored from backup) worked today
FYI-> I went to tether today and the 4G built-in app expired so i tried my restored wifi tether from my dInc.
it worked.
4g and 3g tested, both working.
not sure why this app didnt work before...
decrapped rom
I cant explain why, but download Open Garden Wifi Tether from android market. Basically same app as wifi tether but it works on Revolution.
Actually I take that back.. I havent been able to connect at all.. I was confusing the 4 days I spent with my thunderbolt before trading for the revo. Sorry..

mixed results with the open garden wi-fi. It connects to my laptop, which is better than before. But speeds are so gosh dern slow. I know some tweaking is needed on my end. Does anyone know the difference between this and the wi-fi tether app? on the surface they look the same.
update your laptops wifi driver and enable adhoc.n mode. That solved all issues on both of my laptops.

I've updated the drivers, trying to figure out how to enable adhoc.n mode. not finding that easily. Running Intel WiFi
under device manager and right click on your wifi card and click properties. There should be a bunch of tabs and under one of them there should be a option for adhoc

Edit: drt054 this nothing new verizon already killed the free hotspot app last month for the lg revolution. Wifi tether still works and must be side loaded to get access to it, since we don't have access to it in the market.

I was able to install and try barnacle but didn't work, also downloaded via Windows7 and installed Wifi Tether 3.1 beta-1 which also did not work. http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com if anybody wants to try it out.
With barnacle I was able to connect to my phone using another android device by checking "skip wpa_supplicant" but there was no connectivity but said "Connected".
Does anybody have a successful tether to Windows7 or another Android device?
Just saw on another forum, wifi tether will only work if the kernel has netfilter enabled. Anyone know how to check?
Fixed android-wifi-tether app will be released in the next week or so, just hold on tight!
If you're still having problems, you might want to check your video card: I have an Intel 6200, and after some exhaustive Google-ing, I found that if you revert your driver to 13.1.1.1 it works fine.
If you're considering PDANet as an alternative, I'd advise against it; it's not a bad option per se, but the free version bars you from https sites after a while (a month I think), and it's slow... really, really slow in my experience (I was getting about 10KBps with PDANet, and now I pull around 60KBps... yeah, I'm way out in the boonies and can only get 3G for the time being).
Wifi Tether WORKS!!!
I just downloaded Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 3 and I have a successful tether to my Windows 7 desktop. In Wifi tether settings and under LAN make sure MSS clamping is checked. I don't know what it is but it works.. download here.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta3.apk
speedtest.net 10.25Mbps down
also, don't know if it matters but using Revolt 1.3 ROM
drt054 - I love you. They're up to beta 6 now so if anyone else is reading this be sure to download the most recent one.
Using Revolt 1.5.

First of all, of course you couldn't get PDANet to work on your old P1010, it's a WiFi only device, and PDANet is an app designed to share your mobile (3G) connection via WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB. What exactly did you hope to accomplish with PDANet on a WiFi only device?
Finally, assuming you got the 3G 7.7 (P6800) and not the WiFi 7.7 (P6810), you don't need PDANet at all in order to share your 7.7's mobile 3G connection to other devices. It has mobile tethering right out of the box. Just go to Settings ==> Wireless and networks ==> Tethering and portable hotspot.
Done!
I am sorry I did not give enough information. I wanted to use my droidx as a server to get internet access for my p6810. I do this with my phone and tablet PC. I now know that it is extremely limited with honeycomb.

Ok, I understand now.
In this case, you shouldn't really need any additional software for your P6810, assuming the tethering software on your DroidX supports WiFi tethering. You should be able to connect the P6810 to your DroidX just the same as you would connect to any other WiFi AP.
I do need another solution as I don't want to pay Verizon another $20/month to tether.

Anyone having issues using any wi-fi tether apps from your phone with this tablet? I get "connecting" and "obtaining ip address" when trying to tether with my nexus s 4g (rooted) but i can't get them to work. The same tether apps from my phone work for my laptop but not this tablet? I can use the bluetooth tether with these same apps but the wi-fi tether doesnt' connect. I guess my questions are:
1. anyone else having this issue
2. if so, is connecting bluetooth from the tether app slower than connecting using the 'wi-fi' option
THanks in advance for this!

Go check your nexus s 4g's tethering mode. Some phones only work in the ad-hoc mode instead of the infrastructure mode, and most of the tablets don't support ad-hoc mode. PC normally supports both modes.
I am having issues. I create a hotspot using my s3 but my nex7 can't connect with a password or not. I got the Bluetooth tether to work instead. Using the FoxFi app and I'm not rooted for either devices.

Works fine with my I9000
Try changing the wifi hotspot name in Foxfi. I could never get Foxfi to work with my S3 and Windows 7 laptop using a password. Without a password it worked fine.
I ended up getting SVTP Wifi Hotspot and USB Tether for my S3 and now I can connect with a password to my laptop.
Will be getting the Nexus 7 tomorrow so I'll check out how the SVTP works with that.
Nexus 7 doesnt see my phone's wifi broadcast
Using a rooted HTC Rezound to offer up the 4G...my iPads find the broadcast in seconds, laptops as well. Nexus 7 has yet to find it. Tried different channels, different settings, different wifi tether pgms, still nothing. My phone apparently cant seem to connect via bluetooth properly either, tried foxfi/pdanet. I dont care about the iPad having network access, its a paperweight after my nexus arrived, but I would like to be able to use my nexus on the road/at work/etc. Any help would by spectacular...
I had absolutely no issue using FoxFi off of my droid bionic to my nexus 7. It initiated and connected within seconds.

This happened on prime for a few firmware versions where ad hoc tethering connections wouldn't work. The solution is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438297. It should work for nexus 7 also. Make sure to follow instructions and set permissions correctly. It should work instantly. No reboot required.
Edit: might need some adjusting. Since i just looked and saw nexus 7 only has one wpa supplicant file in /system/bin , a complete swap might do the job. Of course rename and backup the original wpa supplicant file. Set permissions correctly on new file according to op of that thread. Post back of it works or not.

The iPad can connect to an ad hoc network, the Nexus 7 can't. Most wifi tether apps are ad hoc so that's why it won't see the network. You need to be able to tether with infrastructure mode to get the N7 to see the wifi network. If there is a hack to make your Rezound's stock hotspot app work, that would be the best way to tether to your N7, because it would be infrastructure.

My phone doesnt support the bluetooth PAN...I think I need to follow the other instructions. Im really new to this, so hopefully someone can hold my hand.
I'd be surprised if the N7 didn't recognize adhoc networks. When Asus put out the TF101 it initially didn't recognize adhoc, but the first software upgrade fixed that. As far as I know all of the Asus tablets now support adhoc. Doesn't make sense that the N7 would not have that capability. - sheureka
Just got my N7 today at work and luckily I can tether with the stock WiFi hotspot app on my HTC wildfire s. For some reason no one can connect to the WiFi at work so tethering is all I have at lunchtime.
I'm able to connect to my rooted e4gt using wireless tehter with no problems. N7 is 100% stock.

Then or also paying $20 to use the internet u already pay for? Not knocking u just asking because if your on Verizon no WiFi or Bluetooth tethering will work without paying the fee
My GNex tethers just fine with the N7. Bluetooth tether sucks however. Connects and stays connected but does not work with anything except the browser.
I managed to tether through wi-fi and bluetooth. Try using a CM7 RCA rom, or something off of here if you like. The built in features for 2.3 and up are great for tethering over wi-fi. Just make sure the rom supports it now since Im using CM10 and for right now wi-fi tethering does not work. Best of luck to you.
