Hi Everyone,
As title says, a few weeks ago I noticed that my wifi keeps dropping no matter what I do.. this being as i surf and not in sleep mode or anything like that.
How did it start?
when it happened this is what i did, went to GB rooted rom, flashed up to JB room paranoid android, all worked fine except i noticed wifi kept dropping, tried another jb rom ,same thing, tried ics kingdroid rom, same thing. So then I decided to go back to original official stuff GB, same thing.. wifi dropping, went to official ICS, still wifi keep dropping.
What I have done to try to fix it:
Tried different roms, networks, all settings in Wifi settings. Googled like 3 days straight, mostly this seems to be a galaxy s3 problem not a galaxy note problem. A few people said they solved it by giving it a static ip which wouldnt work for me as im on like 3 different networks, and by changing sleep settings to make sure it doesnt shut off during sleep mode, which i honeslty have no problem with. Someone solved it by switching rom, nothing i find applies to me..
So what do I do??
I would honestly appriciate any suggestion, this is a great community so I got high hopes Sorry if my question has been answered before but I dont belive so, i posted in noob thread any noone had suggestion so I hope I dont do anything wrong with this post.. cheers :victory:

What's your modem? Go to settings > about> baseband
thanks for the reply it's n7000xxlrk , it's it suppose to be that?

The operation of Wi-Fi is a core responsibility. Try changing the kernel. Modem is responsible for the connection to GSM. If you change the kernel does not help, you probably have a broken phone.

well i have weak wi fi signal.. Most of the modems don't work for me.. Ddlp4 is the one i use..and no the kernel has nothing to do with wifi signal strength
Check your router and see if WPA Wireless network encryption is set to AES, if it is, change it to TKIP., see if you can connect after.
Usually it's nothing to do with the ROM, modem, kernel, android or even the phone itself, it might be your router setting that needs a change.
Know it was long since I made this thread but I wanted to report result, it was as above poster said. Rouer settings, finally found compatible ones after sooo manny roms, modems and other fixes were attempted.

Hi,
Got a really annoying issue with my Nexus One that has been happening since the Froyo days, when I leave home to go to work I turn the Wi-Fi off on my phone to save battery. Sometimes I use the widget sometimes I go through the settings.
The problem is that the 3G doesn't alway's kick in, the only way for me to get 3G working is to turn my phone off and on which always works.
Any suggestions on why this is happening and how to resolve them?
I am running Stock Ginger Bread on my Nexus One on the the Vodafone network in the UK.
Try checking your signal strength: *#*#4636#*#*
You can try to enable 3G only and see if you can keep a signal.
My signal is sometimes intermittent due to topography. Stupid flat Ohio. Haha

Thanks, it won't be that though because once I turn the phone off then back on it's there. Also once I turn W-Fi off and 3G doesn't kick in, then it won't do untill I restart. Also another reason why I know this isn't the case is because even when I do this at work 3G doesn't kick in and there is a Vodafone 3G mast on the roof
never seen this problem before, but it sounds like something that might have to be fixed by doing a full wipe and reflashing your ROM. i know its drastic, so maybe do a nand backup first. then flash and see if the problem remains. if its still there, than just go right back to your backup and no harm and nothing lost. worth a shot.

I'm on a stock Nexus One unrooted so I shouldn't have to Root to fix an Android problem. Never Rooted before but considering it.
I got the exact same problem with Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs, can't remember if I had that issue with MIUI ROMs, but definitely with CyanogenMod ROMs.
Instead of rebooting the phone I suggest switching flight mode on/off it's faster than a full reboot
Haven't found any real solution yet and always thought I'm teh only one with that problem as I couldn't find any other person with that issue. Right now I'm testing different Radio/ROM combination and if that doesn't work I'll need to check if any app is causing the problem.
Any chance you are using Tasker?

I used to use Tasker but uninstalled it when I thought that it was causing this, it wasn't. Thanks for the tip about airplane mode, worked a treat.
Hey all,
since a couple of days I have a problem with my wifi, it keeps switching on and off (I can see the checkbox activating and deactivating, every couple of seconds, at the moment it is unchecked and says "error")
as I said, the wifi worked before
I am running cyanogen 7 (http://android.doshaska.net/cm7) on Milestone
- But I have also tried MIUI, with the same problem
does issue sound familiar to anyone?
Maybe it is an app which force turns my wifi on/off, is there any way to check which one it is (as far as I know I don't have an of them, eg juice defender, tasker installed)
Many thanks
Have you tried other WiFi networks? Because the same error being reproduced across two different ROMs seems a little unlikely.
Well, the problem is that my wifi doesn't stay on long enough (just a couple of seconds) to scan/connect to any network.

So it isn't a problem connecting to a network, it's a problem of the wifi not even being able to turn on?
Well "technically" it does turn on, but it switches off immediately

wow, i just logged in to search for this issue myself. I have that same issue across multiple roms also. The one that did work was the Telus Lite Eclair. I liked that one, but of course I wanted to check out others. Each one was the same as you describe. Wifi scans, disconnects, scans, in a loop.
I have done searches on google for wifi disconnect loop android, and seen some stuff about kernals and stuff that is over my head at the moment. If some one has an idea on how to get it working that would be great.
I wipe before any install, I've went back to stock and it works, everytime I went to the Telus Lite one it also always worked. I dont know if theres a clue there or not?
Im on an Telus milestone in Canada, on Telus network if that makes a difference.
And since I think this is my first real post, Thanks for the work guys.
Not sure if this would work, but this is the first result that popped up: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/koush/75782-wifi-disconnect-loop-cm6-final.html
EDIT: People are saying that Hidden SSIDs and MAC filtering can cause problems when trying to connect to the WiFi network. Try forgetting the network, making the network visible(protected if you wish) and reboot the phone and try again.
ok, time for a stupid question...
where do I find suitable kernels?
I can't find anything about this (roms and kernel tweaking is a is pretty well documented though)

As far as I know, you won't be able to change the kernel on the Milestone at all, due to the locked bootloader.

a little update, I checked my settings on my router and there was nothing really out of place. For poops and giggles I installed Shawdowmod, and it works with out issue with my wifi. Go figure. Anyway, think im keeping it.
Thanks for the help.
hmmm, good to hear you figured it out.
I just went back to stock and guess what? still nothing
maybe I'll try that rom and see
I'm having this weird issue with my galaxy s. The weird part is that over the last couple of weeks, reception has been zero in a period of time that's been steadily increasing. I've been able to restart the phone to fix it, until yesterday when I couldn't get any reception at all.
But wait, there's more! My sim card works in my girlfriends gs2, her sim card works fine in mine. So, it's only the combination of my sim card and my phone that gives me no reception at all. Also, what could be causing reception to steadily degrade to the point of none at all?
I'm running the team icsgs rc 4.2 with semaphore kernel, but I couldn't post in that thread because of my low post count. So, what I'm thinking is that I should try another modem before I try to wipe and perhaps install another rom. My question is, do I have to use Odin to flash a new modem, or can I just use cwm? Anybody have a suggestion for a particular modem?
So, Ive flashed the KF1 nexus modem, no change at all..
The only thing I haven't tried now is going back to stock rom... Anyone?
I have problems with Nexus S modems (that are so popular last weeks). For me the best modem is original JVU (the CM version). Try with that modem (if not with it already).
Try with the original build, because that reminds me for a hardware problem. You can debug the problem with experiments. Try everything before going to service.
No EDGE/GPRS signal
Hi!
Because I cannot post in development section, I'm putting this here...
Last week I've tried 9 ROMs and different modems and the problem was always the same...
When I'm on UMTS/HSDPA signal, everything works great, but when I'm on EDGE/GPRS signal, I cannot even make a call, or send a message.
This problem is happening to me for the last two weeks... :-(
ROMs tried: teamhacksung's CM9 ALPHA for Galaxy S (BUILD 17, 16), Team ICSSGS RC4.2, AOKP Milestone 4, Build 28 (now using), Dark Knight 3, 4, Elite V9.0
Kernels: Semaphore ICS 0.9.5b, Devil Skorpion Kernel, Midnight ICS 0.9.0-2-HUGERAM (now using), and the ones which comes with ROMs
Modems: XXJVU, XXJVT, XXKF1, XXKD1, XXKB3, AUCKF1, XXJVK, XXJVO and now I'm using XXJW4
When I flash DarkyROM JVU-RE with Odin everything works fine. :-S
So.... I think the problem could be in the ICS ROMs or kernels
If anyone knows how to solve this problem with 2G networks, I would be very grateful.
p.s.
Also, I find my SGS very often bootloop without possibility to enter CWM when I'm flashing new ROM.
And I found a solution for those bootloops, because I'm tired of flashing with ODIN a new GB ROM constantly... after bootloop, I use FixRecovery and flash it with Odin, then enter CWM and install Team ISCSGS RC 4.2 which only starts and make boot image and flash new CWM, so I can flash other ICS ROMs...
Why I'm telling this? - only because the devs could see if they can make other ROMs to start with flashing like Team ICSSGS RC4.2.
Sorry for my bad English. :-$
Edit: @adytum
I have also thought that my SIM card was a problem, so I've exchanged it. Didn't help....
At first the problem was like yours...
Will attempt to install the original stock firmware today (boooo, downgrading from ICS ), but I have my doubts. My service provider have started technical problemshooting at their end, but I have my doubts there too.
To add to the confusion, I discovered that 3g and data traffic works fine, wireless works fine, but calling doesnt work at all. As mentioned, if I put my sim in an other phone, or another sim in my phone, it always works.
I just managed to make it work. In test settings, INFO part (*#*#4636#*#*), after 5 times setting WCDMA only, my phone works only on 3G networks and now I can communicate because it doesn't switch to 2G...
But, I would appreciate if anyone find out solution for problem with 2G.
I hope that this isn't problem with my phone.
As far as your problem, I would try to reinstal the modem, because after trying a lot of new ones, sometimes it just doesn't recognise which one is instaled. JW4 seems the best for me...
Sorry for my bad English... :-(

If I could hug you, I would! This modem seems to have solved all my issues! So, yes, our problems are probably related to eachother and to ICS. Never got around to try stock or darkys rom, but I'm guessing that would have fixed my signal issues too.
A million thanks to you! (Now I'm just crossing my fingers for stability and that this is not a fluke!)
Well, I'm glad to see that it works...
For me, JW4 have the best signal, and is very stable. And, you know, I've tried almost all other modems, and they were all pretty much the same.
I wouldn't tell you about that modem if I haven't seen that I have HSDPA reception (-95dBm) in the places where I had very poor 2G signal (-103dBm) , and no 3G signal (-111dBm) at all before.
Sorry for my bad English....
Have you tried if other sim cards work in your phone, or your sim card works in other phones? If so, I'm thinking that these issues have something to do with the service providers not being up to date regarding newer android versions. That's really the only logical conclusion I can draw.
I did call my service provider earlier today, they were as stumped as I am, but did suggest to try connecting with 2g and 3g enabled respectively.
By the way, your english is just fine
Well, I was working as tech support at my provider (until last month), so everything is fine with network and signal.
Also, first thing I did was to check SIM card and it is OK. I even exchange my SIM because it was 5 years old -just in case...
Everything works great in other phones, but in my phone only 2G network reception doesn't- even with other SIM cards...
That is very weird, but, I finally managed to set only 3G so, everything works now, but with very poor signal in places where I had EDGE coverage before.
I even thought that could be a problem with my device, but when I flash GB ROM, everything works, so I'm thinking that it only could be a bug in kernel or ROM.
I didn't see much people complaining about this, maybe only because they are constantly on 3G...
I don't know...

And...
Btw, service providers have nothing to update or upgrade with signal, because it is only frequencies they have to maintain and base cell as root. That's why we use SIM card which help our phones decode signal.
Only thing that is up to providers is maintaining the level of signal and its communication with central station, along with base overload in urban areas.
Sadly,
In 98% of problems, it is up to SIM card, device or software on it.
When the problem is up to service provider, everyone in that region- on the same base cells, have it. :-(
So, obviously it can only be ROM/kernel problem or device(hardware) problem. :-(((
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Obviously the main difference here is that the only thing that ruined reception for me was the combination of my sim card and my phone, every other sim and phone combination worked.
You probably have more extensive knowledge about this than I do, and you're probably right inducing that it is a rom or kernel bug.
In that case, there are two options;
Maybe SIM card didn't set well, or SIM card is damaged.
You can try to see if it is damaged or has something on it and clean it. Otherwise, if it is damaged or just won't work, go and exchange it. It takes just a 5 min. And if you tell that SIM stopped working, they won't charge you anything. And, after that, you'll be sure that SIM works.
It also happened to me in the begining, and I was wondering why my SIM won't work only in my phone. Then, I place it in my old Nokia and after 2 days, I couldn't talk with people and the signal was OK. Then I exchanged it, and everything was OK.
Now, obviously I have a problem with a phone. :-(
Maybe it is a message to me to buy a new one... Note, maybe... ;-)
Anyway, I hope that I've helped you.
Sorry for my bad English...

Seems I was a little too quick. Problems started again today, but I've managed to fix it for now..
I installed jvu from odin as per the first post in the elite, ICS beta 8 thread. Found that everything worked fine in jvu, and now it also works fine in ICS.
Hey peeps, ti me for my first post.
Well i upgraded tO stock germanICS a couple of days back. Everything was working fine until yesterday. WiFi is behaving weird, i can connect with no probs at home but i've noticed that the download arrow from the WiFi icon on status bar is on and off all the time, draining the battery faster than expected(e.g. rom 100% to 65% 3 hours almost no use). So i spoke with a friend of mine, kind of a geek, he told me it could be so me kind of compatibility issue between ICS and old router's firmware. So i went to a bar nearby to check if i could reproduce the same behaviour and everything was working normal.
Did Anyone here had anything similar? I've been surfing to do so me research, but all i've found is so me peoples probs with WiFi not connecting at all and some sII users withe their WiFi module broken.
Thanks in advance!
Also...
I´ve read somewhere that a factory wipe solved some wifi´s peoples probs. As i´m under german ICS LPY i know i´ll be likely bricking the note if i wipe, what leads to teh next question...is it possible to flash a kernell(without the bug) without being root?
Cheers,
VR
edit
So i´ve been reading quite some info about franco´s and speedmod´s kernels, and it´s so confusing for starters. My last question remains , is it possible to flash those for a non rooted device? Anyone that is running it tried wiping? Results?
Thx again
Edit 2
After some research i now know i need to root for any new kernel flash, as i read my post i´m starting to feel i´ve lost my head somewhere, so bear with me, hehehe. Also found out some people tried wiping with franco´s kernel with no probs, so i almost have the info i was looking for. So, in case i go root and get franco´s kernel up and running, do you think my WIFI issues might dissapear after wiping?
I have the same bug...with wifi also the os android buy draining ny battery so bad...im on stick rom gb 2.3.6 with the ssme oroblem....any solution?

So better stay stock as i am now...i guess? Because wifi is working but behaving weird at home
wifi solved
had problems with reception, damping compound, have the speed reduced from 300 N router to 54G and he now works perfectly
10 days or so ago i installed paranoid android 0.5 and followed the instructions by the letter.
all was well except for the camera bug which i knew about...
then yesterday i started noticing internet connectivity issues as well as speed issues.
it seems that (running speedtest.net) i have no upload speed, and my download speed is also very unstabe (5000kbps one moment, 100kbps the next) and my signal icon also shows i do not have full reception while i allways did have full reception where i am currently sitting (about 2m from the router)
i have checked the other wireless devices to see whether it was a router issue but none of the other devices show any change in reception nor speed.
i'm about to do a clean install of GB, see what that does .. but i thought i should allready pose the question here in case there won't be any change .. perhaps anyone else who has the same issues ..
UPDATE: installed GB and no real succes. speedtest showed improved download speed (14000kbps) but still nearly no upload (31kbps)
i'm open to everyone's ideas.. just hope i haven't broken my SGN ..
going for yet another rom .. gonna try one of the more stable ICS roms...
i'll keep you guys updated.
OK update2 ...
just went and got myself another router just to be sure and it seems that it IS a router problem .. grrrr
let's continue the search ...:s too bad i wiped my rom for this ..
lol, change rom and or kernel, or modem, cause you didnt have it before it is likely its not router issue.
Or try newer versions of rom. Cm9 the base for paranoid and had wifi partially broken in some versions. if the paranoid used a cm9 with that issue, you have your cause.

it's indeed strange that it happened out of the blue, but i guess that's technology for ya ..
