File Converter works with almost all files! So how can we convert almost all files? Well, the conversion does not take place on your device but on our file conversion cloud, so the app is small and you can continue using your device during the conversion!
For example convert:
TIFF to JPG
WMV to Android Video
DOCX to PDF
PDF to JPG (you will get a ZIP with an image for every page)
WAV to MP3
and way more!
We can convert from hundreds of source formats to:
Video: 3G2, 3GP, AVI, FLV, Matroska MKV, Quicktime MOV, MP4, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, OGG, WebM VP8, WMV, For Android, For BlackBerry, For iPad, For iPhone, For iPod, For Nintendo DS DPG, For Playstation 3 PS3, For PSP, For Nintendo WII, For XBOX 360
Documents: Word (doc and docx), Flash, HTML, Open-Office, PDF, Text
Audio: AAC, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA
Ebooks: ePub, AZW3, FB2, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PDF, TCR
Images: BMP, EPS, GIF, EXR, ICO, JPEG, PNG, SVG, TGA, TIFF, WBMP, WEBP
Archives: 7Z, TAR BZ2, TAR GZ, ZIP
But that's not all, depending on what you want to convert to you can also set optional settings:
Video: depending on the selected format you can change the size (width and height), quality, video bitrate, audio quality, frame rate, rotate, flip (mirror), or trim to a specific part of the video
Audio: depending on the file type you want to convert to you can change: bitrate, frequency, channels (mono, stereo), normalize or trim to a specific part of the audio
Ebook: depending on the selected format you can change the Ebook title, Author, Add a border, Select the encoding, enable ASCII ouput or select the ebook type: Kindle, Kindle DX, Kindle Fire, Apple iPad, Sony, Sony 300, Sony 900, MS Reader, Mobipocket, Hanlin V3, Hanlin V5, Cybook 3, Cybook Opus, iLiad, IrexDR1000, IrexDR800, jetBook, Kobo, Nook, Nook color, Bambook, Tablet, Generic e-ink, Generic e-ink large, Pocketbook 900
Images: depending on the selected format you can change the quality, size (width and height), dots per inch (DPI), apply filters and/or color effects
And since you enjoy reading here some more features:
- Share files through web server or upload to FTP, Samba, WebDAV, DropBox, HTTP POST, Email, or use the default share option
- Load files through Browse, Gallery, Camera, Record sound, or use your own file manager
However, there are some limitations to the conversions, so we cannot convert:
- Files bigger than 100 mb, it would take to long to upload
- Password protected files (secured pdf, etc). Well, logically our conversion software can't open them
- DRM protected files (audio, video, etc). DRM is an encryption for copyright media, so we can't open them
FAQ
I don't want my personal files on other servers!
We understand, and it's completely your decision whether you trust us. However, we can guarantee you that the files get deleted immediately from our servers after conversion and that no file will be kept. For more questions regarding this just post a reply.
You can find File Converter on the Google Play market:

Good question, however, if you receive a document through email on your phone and you're on the road you can convert it easily to PDF and forward it.
It's just the fact that you don't need a computer to do the conversion. A lot of people nowadays use their phones for almost everything.

Convert PDF and create PDF from other file
you can try to use the OX PDF Creator and it is an all-functional PDF maker tool that can create PDF documents from any printable files, such as txt, images (JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, EMF, EWF, TIFF), compatible with Microsoft Office 2003/2007/2010.

If that doesnt work (I havent tried doubletwist) maybe one of these apps might work.
I dont have my captivate yet (never owned an android phone before either) so let me know if any of those work out.
if you manually add your media to your device, you can arrange it however you want....beauty of android=its yours to do with what you want

By videos do you mean movies? If that's what you're doing then I use DVD Decrypter to rip them to my laptop then AutoGK to convert them to XviD. I just leave all settings default and set the size to 1CD (700MB). The movies play fine and it's not like it's taking up too much storage space.
I play .avi due to its file size.
Otherwise I don't miss itunes except for pod casts.
Now I can put what media I want on my sdcard and don't worry about it.
You get used to it.

The fact that people want junk programs (especially one like iTunes, which loads a chunk of it's bloated self at startup and slows your computer down) is mind boggling.

Try isyncr. It doesn't require a program on your computer and will sync play-counts and ratings back and forth. I really missed iTunes myself and this helped with the transition.

hey can u please lemme know from where can u download .apk files for apps and games? ? ?i just learned how to do sideloading....
Put me down as another iSyncr supporter. I like using iTunes to manage my music library, but not lock down my device.
In handbrake, I've had good success with using the default iPhone preset, but changing the horizontal resolution to match the source video (up to 800). A high quality 2hour movie runs about a gig that way. Medium quality is about 400mb.
As you may know, the Nook color has PowerVR SGX530 Graphics chip, which is also available on Droid 2 and Droid X.
This chip is pretty good when it comes to medium 3D performance and video playback. It can play videos quite nicely, but only the formats that it knows. Other formats will need to be played using software, which will give you medicore level playback.
If you have an MP4 files (which are encoded with H.264 Base level encoding), those files will play with hardware decoding great. However, if you have other video content (episodes, both in AVI/XVid or MKV/H.264 format), Nook will play them badly with 3rd party software (rock player, vplayer, etc).
Thats where FFMPEG could help a lot, if you're using Linux, all you need to do is install ffmpeg and run the following command:
Code:
ffmpeg -y -threads 8 -i myvideo.avi -b 800k -bt 1000k -vcodec libx264 -vpre default -vpre baseline -acodec libfaac -ac 2 -ar 44100 -ab 128k mynewvideo.mp4
the "myvideo.avi" is your original AVI file, and "mynewvideo.mp4" is the new MP4 file which could be played nicely on the Nook Color. Please note: if your video is bigger then 854x480, then you need to add the -s XxY where XxY is the width:height of the video (example: 640x352). If your video needs a new aspect ratio, you can use the -aspect parameter (example: -aspect 16:9)
If you're using a mac, then handbrake is your friend, as other tools which are based on ffmpeg.
On Windows you can either install FFMPEG for Windows, or you can use An application called "Any Video converter", and simply select your original file name, Select X264 as video codec, and convert. The output file should be played well.
No matter what conversion software you use, make sure that the H.264 profile that you use is set to base-level (or "base"). Anything higher cannot be played by the nook without frame skipping.
If you want to test if your video can be played with hardware acceleration, upload your video to your Nook (or to the Micro SD card), open any file manager and click on the mp4 file. Try to play the video with the "Movies" built in app. If the app will recognize your video, it will play it without any issues or frame skipping.
Good luck
Hetz
HandBrake can be used on Windows also
I read there are aspect ratio issues with the built in player. But I also read that even in mp4 base other video players can't take advantage of the hardware playback accel (proprietary drivers). Is that correct?

Handbrake works great on Windows. Encoded a few this week for the Nook and ran like buttah.
Out of curiosity, why not just use RockPlayer. I'm yet to get an NC so I may be missing something.
It runs kind of choppy on video files encoded with anything other H.264/MPEG4 and the audio seems to get out of sync quickly

It really depends how the official Froyo update (coming in January) will improve performance.
rock player works fine... the problem is that you cant have above a 480p video. the reason is its not the audio thats lagging its the video studdering and thats whats causing the lagg
The topic title should read "how to watch videos on your nook if you run Linux"
You added all the settings you need for it, but not for the other operating systems lol You can run the file through any of these programs, (speaking Mac/Win) but just because you encode it with H.264 doesn't mean its going to play smoothly. If your source file is 1080p, this obviously isn't going to work.
My source file is:
H.264
Deinterlaced
720p
30fps
VBR 1 pass
AAC. 192kbps 48kHz, Stereo
So far Im at a video file @ 1024x576 at 15fps (tried to pull the Consistent Quality slider to 100%, but didn't see much differance) thats had the smoothest playback.
Now Im pretty much brand new to video editing and making, are there any settings I could be useing to make this file more smooth using Handbreak....or even more so In Adobe Premiere?
Im basically trying to see what the highest quality the Nook can take. Not to mention a continuous video of my coral reef while Im at work sitting next to me on my NC would b kinda epic
I use DropFolders. It uses HandBrake & you set it up with a watch folder & a destination folder. All you do is drop a video in the watch folder & it converts the file & puts it in your destination folder. You set up the HandBrake arguements in Drop Folders. Works like a charm.
Cheers,
kev

According to the published specs for the NC, the default app will not play video above 854x480. If you want to use hardware decoding through the default app, you'll need to scale that down from 1024.
I have several videos encoded using one of the latest nightly builds of handbrake for NC, and with the constant quality set at 20, playback is flawless. You can use the "Apple Universal" setting to get the required baseline profile for MP4 and then adjust the video size as you like.
You can also use the "High Profile" and change some settings and per HERE. I was, however, able to set the max width above 720, unlike the third poster.
Innnnnnteresting! Thank you! I will give this a shot and see what I come up with

Got a Nook Color over the weekend, and video looks great using the Handbrake preset posted here... I'm using Autonooter, and the built in Gallery app to play it. However, I'm curious, if I decided to try out Honeycomb, will other video player apps use hardware decoding with files encoded with the Handbrake preset, or is it limited to the stock Nook app? Thanks!
By installing apache with the root set to my download folder, navigating to the file using your local ip in the chrome browser using the http:// instead of the file:// prefix, copying the url into this github site (that I stumbled upon) http://googlecast.github.io/cast-chrome/ using the html5 option, the chromecast will pull the file directly from your machine and decode it at it's native resolution.
Hope that is as cool to others as it is to me. Watching Venture Bro's in 1080 right now, looks great.

There is a much simpler way than installing apache. I did it with mongoose. No installation at all. just 1 portable exe. Just place the exe in the folder of the mp4, run it, then go to http://googlecast.github.io/cast-chrome/, select html5, and enter http://YourIP:8080/NameOfFile.mp4
worked perfectly and no installation necessary
There's also an easy (and cross-platform) solution if you have python installed. Just open your media directory in terminal and run "python -m SimpleHTTPServer" (without the quotes.)
This will serve your files at localhost:8000/path/to/video (path is relative to the directory you're running the server in)

I am using the latest version of Avia along with my Chromecast and can succesfully cast local media.

I cannot determine what makes some MP4 files work and others not...

You will be better off getting yourself a good Video Converter you like because most Torrents are in MKV format and don't always note what codecs are being used.
Handbrake is a very good (FREE) program but can be a bit daunting for anyone who is inexperienced with encoder settings.
I use Xilisoft's Video Converter because it is pretty simple, Easy to Operate and makes doing Batches of Files a snap.
But it is a paid app.
I sure have never regretted paying for it I use it for just about all my Library conversions and only use Handbrake or VLC whenever Xilisoft chokes on a file which is usually because of a bad file not the programs inability to convert that format.
Handbrake settings
I have encoded my mp4 file 4 different ways and I still cant get it to cast. Other files work fine. I have researched what settings are supported by Chromecast by searching for "chromecast video formats" (I cant post a link). Attached are the settings that I think are the closest in Handbrake but still have no luck. Any ideas?
Set a specific bitrate, preferrably 4 Mbps (4000 Kbps) to start.

Use the CLI (command line interface) version of MediaInfo.
Here's a quick batch file I put together. It may be glitchy, but should work, as it's based off another batch processor I've been working on for a while.
It assumes your structure contains a single level of subfolders, for example:
D:\My Videos\Foo the Epic\Foo1x01.mp4
D:\My Videos\Foo the Epic\Foo1x02.avi
...
D:\My Videos\Foo the Epic\Foo1x12.divx
D:\My Videos\Bar the Final\Bar1x01.mov
D:\My Videos\Bar the Final\Bar0x02.qt
...
D:\My Videos\Bar the Final\Bar0x10.avi
You would point MediaInfoBatch at "D:\My Videos" and set a logfile name like MyVideos.txt
MediaInfoBatch "D:\My Videos" MyVideos.txt
Note double-quoted path as it contains spaces. Double-quoting is also necessary if it contains ampersands. It doesn't hurt to just double-quote it anyway.
Save as MediaInfoBatch.bat (or whatever you want, but then you'll have to change the syntax text).
Easiest to throw it into the same folder as the CLI mediainfo.exe
Code:
@echo off
rem MediaInfoBatch
rem -------------
rem Runs command line interface (CLI) mediainfo on each file in each subfolder of the specified location
rem First parameter should be target directory, enclosed in double-quotes if there are spaces or ampersands within
rem Assumes files are in subfolders within the target, ie D:\Movies\Title1\file1 ... D:\Movies\Title20\file30
rem should be executed as MediaInfoBatch.bat D:\Movies
rem Second parameter should be filepath for logfile, enclosed in double-quotes if there are spaces or ampersands within
rem Check for proper command line
IF %1a==a GOTO syntax
IF %2a==a GOTO syntax
rem Remove double-quotes in parameter
set tmp_MediaInfoBatch_Target_raw=%1
set tmp_MediaInfoBatch_Target=%tmp_MediaInfoBatch_Target_raw:"=%
set tmp_MediaInfoBatch_Logfile_raw=%2
set tmp_MediaInfoBatch_Logfile=%tmp_MediaInfoBatch_Logfile_raw:"=%
GOTO check_prereqs
:syntax
echo MediaInfo Batch processor
echo -------------------------
echo Syntax: MediaInfoBatch [path] [logfile]

echo [path] is root path to *folders* to be processed.

echo will run MediaInfo on all files in the first level of directories
echo under C:\MyVideos and write the output to C:\MediaInfo.txt
pause

:check_prereqs

Hello,
I have uninstalled Avia and have started using LocalCast. It plays MKV files effortlessly! No conversion is needed at all!
All the best!
Also had this problem, avia not casting mp4. Downloaded Real Player and it fired up the mp4 perfectly.

Chromecast has limitation in the input formats. Only video containers MP4 and WebM encoded with Video codecs H.264 High Profile Level 4.1, 4.2 and 5, VP8 and audio codecs HE-AAC, LC-AAC, CELT/Opus, MP3, Vorbis are compatible with Chromecast.
When send local media which are with extensions .mp4 or .webm through Chromecast to TV, it succeeded in most cases but sometimes failed. That is because MP4 and WebM, as video container, contain different video or audio codecs which Chromecast doesn't recognize.
I used to use a little piece of software called Faasoft Video Converter to convert MP4, AVI and other various video formats to Chromecast compatible formats, happy with it.
Actually, you can basically drag and drop the video files into Chrome browser and Chromecast from there. The point here is, you can do so on video types such as MP4; however, you probably will find difficulty doing the same on other video formats like MKV, VOB, AVI. All we need to get done is to make the MKV, VOB, AVI videos play inside the Chrome browser by some third party programs, like Brorsoft Video Converter.
Wondershare Ultimate Video convert - set video to H.264. Software has a beast mode and can convert H.265 but the compression rate sucks. Not a lot of bells and whistles but simple conversation and done quickly.
There's bubbleupnp, install the server and it will convert on the fly.
Plex is an oldy but a goodie. The plex media server coupled with the app does all conversation on the fly to play pretty much any media to any receiver.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most dl's mp4 and not mkv's? It's VERY common to see mp4, semi rare for mkv - though usually reserved for hi def minus yify, and super rare for avi's as technically avi files can be nuked as it no longer fits the scenes standard. That's my experience anyway.
Hi, I have a doubt about chromecast, is there anyway to play a video with a .srt for subtitles in the chromecast?

I've had this discussion over at the Plex Site and I'll repeat it here...
External SRT files are just an awful way of doing subtitles no matter what you use.
As for Plex support yes it does support them but it transcodes them into the video (Server Side insertion) which is not the best way to go about this.
Client Side Overlay Subs are the best way to support any subtitle but it requires the source to have a Subtitle text track encoded in he source.
My feeling (and I know many disagree) is unless you live in the UN or live in a dorm full of foreign exchange students there is no reason to need to see a movie with French subtitles on Tuesday and German Subtitles on Thursday!
So just re-encode the source and hard code the subtitles in the language you need or at least re-encode the external SRT into it on the Subtitle/Text track of an MKV or MP4.
The Plex Player app however does not support client side subtitle overlay as I type this so hard code is the best way to go there unless you have a decent machine doing the transcoding for you.
Thanks for the answers

This is why even with Chromecast I have kept my old Galaxy Nexus around to use with MHL and a Bluetooth Mouse. BSPlayer has wonderful subtitle support. Open a video without subtitles and it'll go scan the interwebs for likely subtitle file matches, and allow you to pick one.
I think it's not impossible for a Chromecast app to support beaming local videos plus subtitles in a manner that does not require encoding them into the video on-the-fly. Just haven't seen it implemented yet.

It's possible but only if the Player App that the CCast loads has the code to support such a feature.

Right, the app would have to push the CCast to an HTML5 app that both loads the video and overlays it with titles.

Definitely possible as the Netflix app uses fonts on Chromecast itself. Not sure how HBO GO does it, but it provides many caption options for font, size, etc.
No idea where the actual title/caption stream comes from though.
Chromecast support webvtt which are very similar to srt. Free online tools to convert them exist. The issue is that none of these apps support them.

They (HBO and Netflix) are embedded in the stream so really all you are doing is a client side overlay you toggle on or off. Their player app supports this. Unfortunately Plex's does not as of yet. They use their transcoder to hardcode the subs onto the Video track. Not the best way to do it.
In a way they are doing it the same way it's done for Closed Captioning.
The subs are always there it's just a matter of you telling the player to use them or not and do the rendering on the client player end.
wow

wow! What an unhelpful and disrespectful answer!!!
So how do I re-encode the source and hardcode (or insert) the srt into the mp4 using my phone only (not a computer)? Are there some APKs that can do that (please provide a link if you want to help)? And how long would it take? And can a mp4 support two different srt streams (say French and English) at the same time?
And sorry to disagree, but I find external srt a fantastic way to do subtitles, especially when you like to switch between languages and you don't have a computer at hand (which is often my situation when I need subtitles)
Bubbleupnp is supposed to support srt subtitles in next release. If video and audio are compatible with cc you don't need any transcoding server just the app.

Chromecast doesn't support external subtitles, so Bubbleupnp can't send display them without transcoding the video.

Nope, That why we have MKV Container!

I'll ask you what I ask everybody who uses the switch language excuse to support SRT.
How many different languages did you watch Star Wars in before you decided you have seen the movie and moved onto another movie?
External SRT files are hit and miss, Don't always match the video to Sync properly,
And since you have problems seeing them you pretty much make my case for me!
From a TECHNICAL standpoint SRT files are a Kludge meant to make up for lack of, (or limited capability of) older container formats and the sooner we move to or find a new container system (or way to support containers like MKV on a CCast) the better the subtitle experience will be not just for those who need to see a movie in their language but all those who wish to run Media servers in a UN environment and need to support multiple languages for the same movie.
Right now of all the CCast programs I know of Bubble is the only one who handles subtitles properly and efficiently.
If you want to encode your SRTs into a container for use in Bubble I suggest looking into Handbrake or any of the many MKV tools that can integrate multiple tracks and all your millions of SRTs into the single container.
I often use two subtitle streams at the same time... As much as I can I use English to improve my English, but when I don't understand, I switch back to my native language (French)...
As to handbrake, I know the tool, but that is not what I'm looking for... I'm looking for a similar tool on android... most of the time, when I watch shows our movies, I don't have a computer with me...

Android really doesn't have the power in the gut to do reasonable transcoding but maybe transmuxing is possible. Android and Mobile is designed and built to be a media consumer not a media creator. And while you can create some media with these devices Video is not one of the best things to do on them. Especially in the area of transcoding.
As for your desire to learn English via Subtitle, Great that it works for you but I have to point out there are much better ways than switching between subtitles to learn english and the main purpose of subtitles is to see the subtitles in the language you do understand.
Most people who use subtitles really only need one language supported and while what you want is possible and easy to do with multiples tracks inside an MKV, External SRTs don't work as well, are not very well supported, require being in the same folder as the video (which if a Media Server is involved will not appear that way to a CCast) and most times your not even sure if the SRT in question is right for your Video Source.
I have Opensubtitle.org integrated into my XBMC and maybe ONE of the dozen or so SRT files it lists actually work and sync correctly.
I get it that it is far easier to find a SRT file than it is to find an MKV source that contains the subs you want, Especially if you speak an uncommon language (does not apply to you obviously), But from a technical standpoint it is a very bad system for doing subtitles and from that same technical standpoint just because you can get it to work doesn't mean thats the way it should work.
Unfortunately CCast does not natively support MKV container, and does not have a file system that the source video and srt can be co-located in. Which pretty much means the SENDER has to do all the subtitle work either via transcode or transmux.
And Android really isn't up to that task.
Could be one day but it's a bit of a stretch right now.
BubbleUPnP now support external srt with Chromecast.
I've just tested it with one mp4 file and its srt file both stored in the same folder on my phone and streamed to my Chromecast with the BubbleUPnP apk (not going through any transcoding via a PC or server).
So YES, with the right app, Chromecast with srt IS possible

I tried several anime mkv's, some display embedded subtitle but most can't. Also bubbleupnp can't see or select any subtitle tracks, while it can choose audio tracks.

There's a problem with MKV sub extraction currently. I'm working on a fix. SRT should cause no problem.
