One sad day last week, a friend dropped his Galaxy and cracked the screen . When plugged in or powered on, the soft touch-keys at the bottom do light up and I can press them (they go dark as I press them, then light back up as they normally would).
I'm OK with paying $80 for a replacement screen/digitizer on ebay, as long as I know that will fix my phone. I'm worried that something else may be wrong internally?
Is there any way to check the functionality of the phone (perhaps through ADB?) or something I can do without having the screen turn on to prove that this phone will still work once I buy a new screen?
Thanks !
Very unlikely after a drop that's cracked the screen that there is more damage than just the screen.
It'll be alright... <---- famous last words lol
As long as it was just a gravity drop from a few feet.

You can only watch to see if something's broken. Replace the screen, and if there's another problem, you will notice. But i don't think there are other hardware problems, either.

Luckily, I found one on Kijiji with a broken charger port for $40. Only took a few minutes to strip it for the screen and fire up the old phone, no problem

Guys!
Sad news!
I droped the X1 yesterday while getting out of the car. It was in a pouch. And damm the display does not show up anymore. I get calls and all but the display does not show up atall. I am so pissed at myself. I checked with a local guy and he said the display would cost US$ 52 (apporx) Now that cheap but then he said thats not along with the touch screen. I Wonder how come the display and touch screen are different. Does anyone know?
Also had come across a thread of a X1 being opened. Can someone gimme the link if they know it.
Regards
if i remember i think there was a video on youtube that someone was opening an xperia step by step
the digitizer shouldnt be that expensive
someone who dropped the phone had similar problems.. maybe u can find it and see if there are solutions?
deja vu
Yeh I heard someone else here did that, seems it's quite sensitive to drops, Im guessing maybe the ribbon comes loose or something if the LCD isnt actually smashed? That being said, if it's just the screen, the touchscreen should still work and not need replacing aswell?
I mean if theyre the same piece and not interchangeable surely they would come together?
my touch stop working suddently, but the screen works fine... but the thing is that i doesnt drop the phone... i dont know... im waiting for a change now...

Dropped my X1 phone as well
I had recently dropped my phone as well and the screen also stopped working, but the phone was completely functional. The repairing people told me it would cost me approx $150+ to get it fixed. The next day i decided to turn the phone on again and the screen worked.
So hopefully, the screen will fix itself for you as well
Bummer
It sounds like the connecter behind the screen has come loose - 52 bucks to open it up and put it back sounds about right.
I'd give opening it up a try, although I remember reading the thread when the service manual for opening it was first leaked - the guys said it wasn't easy!
Is it not still under warranty or something?
no warranty?
warranty will fix it
I was the guy who dropped his and had the same problem. Sent it in for warranty (great service I bought in the UK but live in Barbados so I sent it to the US location). Got it back in two and a half weeks fixed for no charge. Mine didn't have any visible damage from the drop though so maybe that made a difference? Good luck with yours!
hey, i remove the screen protector and start working!!!

I had same problem, in SE service they change flat cable, cost me 25 euro.
I had the same problem yesterday. Just searching for disassemble example and it works all of sudden today!
my x1 dropped too and the display stopped working ( black screen ) , but ive only called the service and 2 days later i had a new device in my hands for free
my X1 work again!
Hey, thanks for the dissasembly links!
Mine fell down onto stone ground and i had the same symtomes, sounds, calls everything was working but not the display. I dissasembled and reassembled, and it worked again! I think the plug of the ribbon cable connecting the front panel with the mainboard in the back unit was loose.
Cheers!
Screamer
First of all, I'm sure this has probably been discussed in some form or fashion, but the searching I've done has mostly resulted in stuff about the digitizer and not if the phone will power up if the AMOLED is cracked.
Anyway, I dropped my phone last weekend and cracked the digitizer. Phone still worked fine. After finding out my Assurion replacement phone would be a Samsung Vibrant, I decided to attempt to replace the digitizer myself. $35 on ebay and a youtube search later I went to work. FYI, not a fun project, I don't recommend it to anyone.
Sometime during reassembly I managed to crack the AMOLED screen
I finished putting it back together and now when I hit the power button it vibrates once and thats it.
My question is: Is it not powering up because of the crack in the AMOLED or does it sound like I effed up the reassembly?
TIA
p.s. I went ahead and paid the $130 for the replacement. So I got a Nexus One with a cracked AMOLED for sale along with the Google Desktop Dock and a 3rd party desktop dock if anyone is interested.
God, I'm gonna miss my N1 Kicks self....really hard
you can buy replacement screens on ebay for around 100 dollars. all of them say LCD though so they are probably the newer SLCD screens and not the AMOLED.
you could also find a broken N1 on ebay with a working AMOLED to use to get an AMOLED again if you want. i sold one i had that had a working AMOLED on ebay a few weeks ago for 130 dollars (it had a broken digitizer not cracked just did not work and it had a bad sim card socket because the previous owner thought prying on the sim socket was the way to dismantle the phone lol)
as for not powering up, well it sounds like it is powering up, the single vibrate is normal on power up but without a screen its hard to tell if its working you would have to leave it on and wait an see if you get any notifications or try calling it etc. another thing you could try is to plug it in to your PC and see if USB mounts.
So I fell on the stairs and crushed my phone tonight, and now it won't start. When I press and hold power, it just vibrates slightly and irregularly for about two seconds. The screen seems to be cracked underneath the glass and the buttons won't light up. I know there is probably nothing I can do but I'm still pleading for your help, any ideas? I hate this feeling.
Sounds like a hell of a fall. Just take the phone into a service center and be glad you are all right. If the screen is cracked there is nothing else to do.

Or if it is a writeoff (i.e. costs more to repair than a new one costs) send it to AdamOutler, so he can figure out how to make the i9000 into an unbrickable mod. See the thread 'Let's save some bricks.....'
yeah man, I know its tough to deal with, But be grateful it was the screen that cracked and not your head.
Things can be replaced, People cant. Look to the bright side your alive !! that beats anything hands down.
thanks for the far too sweet comments I guess I should look on the bright side, eh?
The local phone-repair-shop-guy told me I need a whole new digitizer+screen and the mobo is f*cked as well. He could sell me the digitizer+screen for 150 euro's and then Samsung (thinking it would be a manufacturing fault and thus within warranty) would repair the motherboard for free. So, if that works I would only be down 150 euro's... not too shabby. Now I'm just hoping the motherboard is sufficiently broken to not show Samsung I put some custom rom on it.
Heh, if it can't even start I think it's unlikely samsung would be able to get any info from it, unless they bothered to try do data recovery or something
If you are feeling generous then please give this a thought

If you were in my country, where I am not at the moment
it would be repaired for under $100.
I just replaced my cracked screen on my phone. Bought it from Ebay. When I put it back together I notice that in the middle of the screen it is unresponsive. When I try and type on it I cant get the middle of the keyboard to work. When I put the phone back to stock thinking it would calibrate the screen, it is the same result, when I try and choose a language it doesn't let me choose the English language. I thought maybe I forgot to plug a certain cable in but it is still doing this after I took apart and put back together the phone three times. The main areas that aren't working is the bottom part of the screen where the keyboard pops up and the top of the screen about a half inch down in the middle. My question is did I get a faulty screen replacement? Or is there a way of calibrating the screen itself?
Bad digitizer did you get a replacement for that too?

Questions solved. You are probably right. The seller got back to me and he said he sent me the wrong part. He was supposed to send me the glass with the digitizer, brand new, and he sent me a used screen with digitizer and the frame around it. He said he will send the new screen ASAP. Thanks for your responses. Hopefully I wont have trouble with the new part.
No problem

Something must be loose inside. If you feel like taking it apart completely you could see. If you don't then see if you can get a warranty replacement (doubtful). Or you could try replacing the screen.
