looks for screen protector made out of gorilla glass - Nexus 7 Accessories

I've seen it for other phones, but I want one for my Nexus 7. My 6 and 2 year olds will be using it from time to time and no telling where their grubby hands have been. Anywho, can anyone tell me the name of the screen protectors that are made out of gorilla glass?

I fail to see how a screen protector made out of gorilla glass is going to do anything more than a normal screen protector.

I know the gorilla glass is strong but I dont' want the actual screen to get scratched. If the protector gets scratched, fine. After enough of them, I can replace it. But I have had in the past screen protectors start to peel up on the edge or get a bubble going along the edge. Since they are flexible, they can peel back or snag. I've seen the glass protectors before online and they seem to stick better since they aren't flexible and though a few scratches won't made it impossible to read, they do get annoying.

Just buy a high quality matte screen protector, that way you won't get grubby finger prints all over it and it will protect it from scratches. :good:

Xgear is in the process of making one now. It's not gorilla glass that I know of but is tempered glass. I had one on my Gnex and loved it!

Gorilla Glass is a trademark of (I think) Corning so unless they make it it won't be GG. I've used tempered glass protectors on camera viewfinders before and been very happy with them but it would be a huge pita trying to fit one to a Nex7 without bubbles/dust/fingerprints underneath and fitting it straight. Better to buy a heavy duty plastic type one and replace as and when needed. My preference is for matt.

I Would agree that a glass screen protector will not Place any added protection over a brand name heavy conventional screen protector. When you see these devices with a cracked screen . The cracks are always from the edge . Caused by the bezel hitting the screen. I would say as others Put a very thick screen protector and a rubber case on it.. I am using the amzer impact resistant case. It will help minor dings. but still not thick enough .. I been watching the bobjgear case site. i LIKE THE look of the round frame to protect the device..

The glass of each have the advantage of feeling like glass. They are also harder to dent and scratch that a film protector.

Spigen also makes a brand called GLAS.t that's tempered glass. Not sure if they have one for the Nexus 7

Thanks guys!

I don't see how a glass SP would solve anything outside a normal screen protector. I recommend a matte for its fingerprint resistance but sounds like you want a crystal transparent.
Gorilla glass aint all its cracked up to be. There isn't a big enough bevel on the N7 thus it'll sit taller then the rest. Sorta like a watch with a dome glass. It'll be more open to scratches and catch stuff for scratches and breakage.
Honestly I'd recommend one from SGP but not the glass. Theirs are much thicker then normal to provide more protection.
Do you think that if the gorilla glass breaks that it won't scratch your real screen with removal. I don't want to think of scrapping broken glass off my nexus. The impact alone would probably scratch up the actual screen or worse.
Grab yourself a TPU case and a quality SP from SGP and you'll be fine with the kids. My 5 year old has his own Galaxy 7 and beat it all up... but the device itself looks great.
I just don't see the benefit here. I also don't think anyone makes those for tablets... and if they did it would probably be costly.

Does the note 3 need any protection since it's gorilla glass?

Just wondering if I should put a skinomi on the screen or something, it has gorilla glass but its better to be safe than sorry? If I drop the phone its going to break most likely, but anyone have any idea how much gorilla glass protects from minor scratch situations (such as having the phone in your pocket with keys, or just the general setting it down etc?
I suggest getting tempered glass for your screen. Gorilla Glass can still get scratched or scuffed. I know because within 3 days of having the note 3 i had a very light scuff that i could only hide by putting on the tempered glass. Of course a normal screen protector could have done the same but tempered glass is relatively cheap if you purchase it through ebay.
Depends. Some people do report getting scratches on Gorilla Glass. I myself have gone without screen protectors on my last three smartphones and all three screens are still like new. But I'm pretty careful about putting the phone in an otherwise empty pocket with the screen facing my leg, and other such precautions.
For protection against breaks tempered glass is your best bet. A plastic or vinyl protector just won't cut it. If scratches are all you're worried about, they work just fine.

My earing made a small scratch in the screen when I held the phone up to my ear during a call. It took me awhile to realize that that was where the scratch came from.

Come on guys why do we have to have this discussion in every device forum? Is gorilla glass scratch resistant, yes. Is gorilla glass scratch proof? Hell no. Bottom line it is your call, if you think you want to chance it and not use a screen protector then have at it and good luck to you. If you want to use a screen protector cause you would rather not risk it then great!
Its your preference.......
All I have to say is, "Gorilla Glass SUX!!!" I have managed to break mine 2x in 8 weeks one of which I got to replace lcd and screen... js
just put on a tempered glass lol
I dropped my note 3 a while ago. Got a nice crack on it. Immediately went out paid 25 for iloome tempered glass the thick one.
No issues with cases or anything. No scratches whatsoever on it and its easier to clean. Just wipe with a shirt or napkin and all the smudges and stuff are gone.
I havent dropped it or anything to see how good the tempered glass works but heck for 25 bux beats the crap I went through to get a replacement phone.

gorilla glass 3.... very bad glass?

Guys! I'm very Sorry to note that my phone have a lot of scratches in the screen... I think it is caused by nails but my last phone (lg 2x) with gorilla glass 2 havent any scratch... Now I bought a screen protector... And you?
And me.
Same here. Gorilla Glass 3 suckzz... I applied screenguard as my screen was prone to scratches.
Me too, it's sad because first weak and i get a scratch, but my nexus 7 2012 have no scrath at all and i bought it 1 year ago.
No scratches here, and I have never used a screen protector

I never used screen protector.
I learned it the hard way on my HTC one X (gorilla glass 2). Never wipe your screen with your cloth. It will contain sand grains and that scratches any glass surface.
On my nexus5, I use glasses wipe, and its still in perfect condition.
Hope this helps.
I've had plenty of phones with Gorilla Glass and ALL of them got scratched if used without a screen protector... people need to understand that Gorilla Glass is only scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. If you don't want scratches, use a screen protector, no matter what.
or take care of ur phone
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant until we see some sapphire glass covers with 9h-10h they will be theoretically scratch proof seeing I tried to scratch the iPhone 5 sapphire lens cover and nothing .
Buy some tempered glass on eBay I Bought one for 5$ its good overall

Mine has those microscratches, which apparently are in the oleophobic layer. Tough, but I can live with them. If it get's any worse I might apply a (glass) screenprotector, but I really prefer naked.
Yeah it's bad. Either they used really cheap GG3, or just used a cheap oleophobic coating. Good thing I have tmo so I can just get another phone when it gets really bad...Thanks jump!
SO many minerals can scratch gorilla glass. It stops stuff like keys from scratching the glass, but get a piece of sand 0.5mm big in your pocket, and your screen is toast

I got rid of some of my scratches that are on the anti-fingerprint layer however the deeper one I could not fix
fixed it with this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Proteger-Sm...t=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item2335b86414
I think the glass screen protectors are the way to go. For $15-$25 you just don't have to worry about it and it's a little extra protection if dropped. Plus it feels naked

It sounds stupid, but I always blow on my screen after it's been in my pocket for a while to get any micro particles off of it. Like somebody else said, all it takes is a single grain of sand combined with a wipe of a cloth or a swipe of a finger to wreak havoc. If I see stubborn particles on my screen, will always dab them with my finger to get them off. I will never wipe them.
I have yet to get a scratch on my screen with the above methods.
never had a screen protector, no scratches. my phone is as flawless as when i first took it out of the box in early Nov.
No scratches on my N5, N4, N7, Xoom etc... is it because I don't put it in the same pocket as my keys and change? That's kind of like, common knowledge...
For all the people saying that a tiny piece of sand can scratch the screen, you're completely right, but some of us on here are comparing it to previous phones that we've owned that haven't scratched in the same environment.
I'm not really complaining too much because I stick my phone with everything else in my pocket (keys, cards, anything else really) and it's still in pretty great condition. (I've had it since it came out)

I own iCarez tempered glass screen protector. I like the feeling of glass rather than plastic. Also, plastic attracts oil and scratches easier. The glass hardness is 9 on the hardness scale so it won't scratch easily. It adds .3 mm to the thickness of the device. The iCarez one I have is anti-oil so it doesn't attract oil. Plastic screen protectors (at least the cheap ones) have a rainbow effect at certain viewing angles.
Cons of tempered glass protectors:
-adds ~.3 mm to thickness of device
-more expensive than plastic ones
Highly recommend glass protectors, just make sure to apply it correctly for they usually only come in packs of 1
Glass all the way no bubbles and u can't even tell it's on your screen plus the bonus glass break protection that it offers.
Glass, glass glass! Never again will i use a plastic protector.
The 5 dollar glass covers on ebay work fine.
I recently got the spigen glas.tr for my S5 and couldn't be happier. Installation was much easier than plastic ones, and the glass is not even noticeable. Not to mention that it has an oleophobic coating. Zagg makes glass protectors but it looks like they're back ordered.

Just put a glass zag protector on my granddaughter's Ipad air, she dropped it not even 10 minutes later, not a mark, scratch, fracture or dimple on the screen. Of course the zag did it's job and shattered like the tech that installed said it would and it's covered under warranty they are sending me a new one free of charge.
So go with glass it's worth the money

I have used both (zag invisishield, ghost armor and armour suit) and no matter what the film will yellow and start to peel over time
I prefer glass I also think it feels a lot better and not so cheap like the film's do
Glass for me....always. ..g
I prefer glass because it doesn't "drag" as much as plastic film does... the glass protects the screen while still keeping it "smooth as glass"
Days after installing the glass it cracked. Small places. Then bigger cracks.
Now I don't know what to do about it! They actually installed at the ATT store.

most of the glass shields come with a lifetime warranty, you register your purchase on line then if it breaks they send you a replacement free of charge, the rep at ATT should have provided you with the information to register it online. if not you have your reciept i think you can go online and register it that way.

Is the lip on a protective case a problem?
I had a plastic film screen protector on my s3. The lip of the rubber protective case pushed against it and caused it to peel up along the edges. Will the glass protectors do the same thing? Are any of the glass protectors slightly undersized to allow for the lip on a protective case?

How many here got tempered glass instead of regular screen protector?

Hello,
So I have had been using Jettech tempered glass for my Note 5 since I got it last year and recently saw a crack on it and I was like how the heck I was like let me see if it's on the screen and
lol the whole thing cracked.
So I had a set of screen protectors at home for note 5 and I put that one. Now it's thin and doesn't even feel like there anything on the screen and the screen looks so beautiful colors and all but I'm worried-do we really need tempered glass protectors?
I've seen knife tests and all and this phone survives without any struggle so shouldn't this screen protector be enough?
What do you guys think? I do have a Spigen case on it-with in-built shock absorber and what not.
It depends on how anal you are. I assure you you will get a scratch at some point.
I got tempered glass because I didn't want a peice of plastic. Recently I watched a video about tempered glass and saw tempered glass can take a hit. If the tempered glass is hit at a specific way/angle then it shatters. But it can defiantly take a hit and prevent scratches

I understand but my question is should I get tempered glass or I'm fine with screen protector I have.
I already put one on but it's not tempered it's the regular one. Not sure how durable this is but my screen definitely looks better lol maybe because it's not that thick haha
Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. If you have a decent lip on your case I don't think the glass buys you a whole lot. With a slim case without much lip, I think they have saved my phone's screens a couple of times.
I'd say go for glass. Plastic is plastic. Glass a few dollars more for a reason)
Tempered glass here
Sent from my SM-N920T using XDA-Developers mobile app
I got the zagg plastic xtreme I think...comes with front and back protect.
It is nice on the back too...no more fingerprints.
I don't have any scratches yet. I can sort of rub light scratches right out...kind of cool.
Tempered glass will give you the height protection against scratches and impact, better clarity, last longer, better feel in hand sometimes better feel then the glass phone itself, less fingerprints. Tg is also better then a "shatter film" because it has better ratio between scratches and impact resistance.
There is no debate here...
I have tempered glass just because its clearer than plastic and is easier to clean. Its not super thick so i dont really mind also for the extra protection on such a exspensive phone.
Sent from my SM-N920W8 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Tempered glass is the best way to go. It provides better protection, is very hard to scratch, doesnt impact optics, and is easier to apply. No brainer.
I'd stick with what we all know, tempered glass. Just purchased the Note 5 from a private party seller and luckily it didn't have many scratches from the previous owner NOT having a screen protector on.
Purchased the glass and am loving it.
They're cheap AF on amazon and as good of quality as the $50 ones in stores.
Well I dropped my phone from pocket height yesterday, it fell face down, and sure enough I seen a crack across the screen. I am using the caselogy that covers the edges, so when I peeled back the tempered glass...it was just the temperd glass cracked. Ordered a new 1 on eBay for 5 dollars, this glass lasted 4 months
Ok guys- even though when I bought the phone new I had tempered glass on it and I was just lazy to order another one since I already had regular screen protector with me.
I'll order one - It's by company JTtech - 9.99 on Amazon prime.
I just got lazy and to be honest- the tests on youtube shows that the bare screen of the phone is very resilient so I shrugged it off.
I'll order it today. I also have Spigen case on with raised edges.
I've got about 6 different tempered glass screen protectors because I can't stand the feel of the plastic screen protectors...
Mind you the screen on my note 5 is a freaking joke. I went about a month without a screen protector and my screen is scratched to all hell. And that's just from pocket use... So in the end it doesn't matter which one you go with, just use a screen protector.
It's not entirely how anal you are. I haven't used them in years and never had a problem because I would always keep my phone in a pocket which I was sure was empty. However I tried an oleo phobic tempered glass screen protector from Benks. It is hard to get it on perfectly, but it is great in that the screen is much more slippery for the swipe keyboard usage and also it never shows fingerprints on the screen any more. (Also this is not as important but I like it that it removes/hides/covers up the obnoxious 'Samsung' logo.) If you but them, buy more than one because if you mess up putting it on then you have a spare (which you would eventually use anyway). I recently dropped my phone for the first time and freaked out - but my case and the Benks tempered glass protector together completely protected the phone - with a big crack across the screen - which disappeared when I peeled off the protector!

Tempered glass screen protectors are the way to go. The only way tempered glass can crack or break is if the edge or corner is hit (I should know, i work with tempered glass everyday) and since these protectors are so thin, there is only a fine edge on it, nearly impossible to hit with something, even though i had something hit that fine edge at work. i get all my tempered glass protectors off Amazon, $4 - $7, as compared to $35 for a Zagg temp glass protector in stores, or even $25 for a plastic protector.
Tempered glass is best
But does anyone have the halo? I put mine on perfectly centered and I've got a hell of a halo. I was wondering if there's no halo with a plastic screen protector. That would be one reason to vote for plastic.

On my second tempered glass, and haven't seen any halos.

Are Tempered Glass Screen Protectors good?

Over the years I have heard that people love tempered glass screen protectors and then I have heard roughly the same amount of people that hate them. It is rough seeing some of the shattered screens with tempered glass protectors.
If tempered glass protectors are "that good" then were did they fail? Were they applied to the screen incorrectly? Do they really not protect the screen in most situations? (can it fail?). Then with the Note and S series phones; We are dealing with the screen curve that no screen protector truely likes to be adhered to?
I am asking because good quality tempered glass screen protectors aren't cheap and I don't want a cracked screen when it eventually "might" happen.
Not sure I can recommend Luvvitt for a tempered glass. The sides are collecting dirt, and the top is allowing dust in. Writing on the keyboard doesn't always work right either. However they sent me a replacement so I will eventually possibly try it. I also didn't like that it didn't go to the edges as my case is minimal. There's honestly lots of variations of them believe it or not, so id suggest looking at actual pictures from Amazon of what people got. I ordered a different one that should be edge to edge, so we'll see how that is. On the other hand there is a company that is selling "softglass" which I think is just a thick tpu and actually looks promising. As soon as I get it, I will review it and let everyone know what I think. The attached pics are my current Luvvitt.
Doesn't matter if you have one on or not, if the screen hits the right spot at the right angle it will crack the screen. They're good for scratch protection but more of a placebo when getting one for drop protection.

that probably holds some truth to it. Cracked my note 4 screen falling off my bed no more than 3ft and it somehow punctured through the screen protector and through the glass. I have no idea what caused it and it seem like something sharped stabbed through it when there were nothing close by. I'm still a sucker for the placebo effect of tempered glass though lol
OP, best bet is the whitestone dome glass but it aint cheap. I'm still hesitant purchasing it because I think they are just overcharging since they don't really have any competitors.
