Hey guys,
I will be visiting USA soon and was wondering if someone could suggest me a new modem for this region. I will be using a T-mobile connection for my I9000. My criterias are: 1) decent battery life 2) good to best voice quality 3) decent data connection.
Thank-you in advance!
There is no best modem as such for now... you have to try from the most popular modems and see which one works best for you.
If you want to see the popular modems you can head to the thread in my signature...
doubts, ask any question over my thread I will respond you...
Thank you. I will check out the popular modems in your thread.

When I was in Vegas on ICS is was getting a solid 4 bars all the time with the JVT modem. I can't comment on call quality though.

Hi everyone -
I'd like to know the difference between each HSUPA i9000 modem that has been tested in the Captivate
I think it would be good to know what the strengths are, when / where it first emerged, and known issues with it.
If you post below I can keep this updated.
I'll start:
JG8 - i9000 Eclair ROM. Works for enabling 850 band for those launching a reorientated kernel. Do not use with Froyo.
JPP - i9000 Froyo ROM.
General principles:
- don't mix an i9000 modem with a cappy kernel or visa versa
Known issues with using an i9000 modem:
-bluetooth voice quality
-wired headsets don't work on mic
thanks all!
bump, i was just gonna ask the same question
The problem with asking questions like this in the Q&A section is that all the developers that can answer it well hang out in the Android development section and never come over here
And people wonder why there is so much spam in that thread.
C'mon guys, help me out, and lets prove that we don't have to start technical question threads in Android development in order to get an answer.

Can some1 tell me which taste batter? Orange or lemon?
Try it yourself znd u will know!
yeah real helpful. is there any difference in frequency support? can bluetooth work corectly along side hsupa yet?
which is the most recent? jg8, jpp, jpm? does one need to be installed before the other? are there any other known problems? battery drain? instability? ect?
someone must know

Haha funny! I thought of doing that myself but the problem with n=1 is that all you guys would get spammed with my own quirks. Hence why I didn't add the point about JG8 FC'ing on me under JG8- most people haven't said that - so I just have a weird bug with my location/hardware/who knows what. I'd kinda be spreading disinformation if I put it down as "truth"
Anyways, anything that anyone wants to contribute I'd be more than happy to include. I think it would be helpful. THanks.

JG8 - ???????

As you can see, I have no idea which one I should choose. This information is embedded within 1000's of pages of material and a good 30 minutes to an hour of reading didn't get me anywhere useful.
I had issues with JG8 FC'ing. Obviously not the case for everyone but in my circumstance I'm looking to try an alternative.
thanks all!

Well the one problem I find with every HSUPA modem is the Bluetooth quality sucks...Since Bluetooth is more important for me I don't use them anymore...Upload speeds are nice but I don't really need it...

Like many many other threads here, ans is very generic:
JK4 is one of the most common modems. BUT, what's good for me may not be good for u. So no point in asking these type of questions. Some say they saw battery gain in JK3 compared to JK4. But for me it was opposite.
Read the modem thread, based on opinions there, pick a few. Test each one out for a day. End of the week, u'd know which one best suits ur hardware.

I am finding the best battery life with jl2 and the best signal with jk4. but there is not much difference that iv noticed.
You see JK4 mentioned quite a bit but it can vary with kernel. GPS can vary as well.
what is the best Radio for At&t reception and signal strength?
Thanks guys

Well sounds like we have an WM user. On Android they are modems and to be honest it is a best one for your area. I use jk4 in Alaska
actually never has a winmo device I have dell streak, first droid device.
but Im asking so I can flash the wife's cappy, she's complaining about signal strength, let me check what rom she has, I believe she has 500mhz speedmod kernel on a i9000 based rom.
I though I saw some HTC droid's , like Evo refer to modem as Radio

oh ok that makes sense. HTC use radios and not modems. just make sure that the rom fits the kernel and modem. it will be trial and error.
Not to be a stickler but doesn't this belong in the q4 -q1 modem thread?

Isn't zel a mod? He seemed alright with it's placement haha
It is like zelendel said it is mostly trial and error for your area but I would give JL2 and JK4 a try they have given me the best results JL2 better signal but JK4 almost the same signal but slightly better battery life for me anyway
I made some changes to build.prop to my Dell Streak on AT&T, based on a thread I found on xda, it seemed to boost my 3g speeds, will build.prop tweaks boost signal reception as well? possibly??
edit: nevermind, didnt find the tweaks in build.prop, or defualt.prop, are they somewhere else? or are they missing from build.prop?
the lines like ro.ril.gprs_class=12, etc.
and ro.ril.hsxpa=3, etc.
Dont forget the 3 new ones, kc1 and the 2 jp9 modems.

Hi,
what Modem would you suggest to use with GB JVT?
My wifi signal is always rather weak (no or poor signal, when other devices still have a good connection) and I also have GPS issues sometimes. I was on JVQ till today but JVT modem does not seem so be any better.
I can still remember that both, wifi and GPS worked much better when I was on Froyo...
Any Ideas?
Semaphore kernel, fastest ive used, and most reliable and has support for init.d. if i helped please click on the thanks button
Im inthe UK and found exactly the same as you. Having tried a few modems im settled on ZSJPG. give it a try m8 see what you think. Not sure on battery drain seemed no more than the others but it keeps signal where JVT and JVQ was struggling.

Did he ask about kernel?
I have been using ZSJPG too. Best for me. You should really try it out
Likewise, ZSJPG is the best for me too. I found battery life is loads better with it as well, I believe it's a Japanese modem that's been optimised for use in built up areas though so it may depend on the area you're in. I'm in London, and it works amazingly for me...

He spoke about Wifi. This is controlled by the kernel.
GPS on the other hand is controlled (AFAIK) by the modem.
When I was in Deutschland I ran with KG3 and it was good for both battery life and speed.
I have tried ZSJPG and that's excellent for battery life and for call quality. I found it did dodgy things to my GPS and the download speeds.
So from what cointry sre yoy? Im from germany and like tje jvs modem

EDIT: Ignore what I just said, you were on Tapatalk. From Australia matey.
On XXJVT now and the JVT modem gives me no issues but I'm on Teamhacksungs ICS Build 6. Seems to have pretty much bugger all standby battery drain unless you sync google photos to your Gallery or involve the stock email app.
it all depends on the locations you're from ZSJPG is for mainly asian countries but it works a charm on other countries i recommend you go to a german galaxy s forum and asking there such as GOAtools.de to ask
I'm currently switching up ics roms and kernels to see which works best for me but I do not understand modems so I need some help here. I saw jk4 on the map close to me. I live in jacksonville fl and commute all around the city and west of jacksonville daily I was wondering which ones to try out.
Thanks

Just start downloading them and trying them, giving them about 2 days before you decide if you like it. Several factors to consider are call quality, signal strength, battery life, and GPS reception. Since your using ICS roms, you must use the modems packaged as CM7/MIUI. You try using something else and it won't flash.
Look >>HERE<< for all the modems you would ever want to try. (FWIW, I like BVJWW2)
Like mrhaley said, there are a variety of things that affect it. JK4 worked great for me when I was in Florida, so I would start there. JW2 is nice also, but it seems like people can't hear me as well with it.

JK4 FTW! I've stayed with it since Eclair and it still works great now I'm on THS ICS. Great starting point to try out.

I flashed jk4 just now. Im over my data limit so I will not be testing internet yet, if it works better I will see better battery life because service is better and faster internet? Is that right?

I'm not sure about better battery life but call quality, data speed and connection stability will definitely improve if the modem is right for you

Better battery life will happen if it gives you better signal strength in the areas you spend the most time.

Hello guys, a few days back I flashed teamhacksung's CM9 ALPHA for Captivate (BUILD 17) on my wife's phone, but she has told me that her apps are not syncing outside of a wifi connection.
I'm thinking it might be something related to the modem.
So I'm looking for any advice on which moden should I load, considering we live in Venezuela? Any tips?
Regards.

Someone listed the "UGKC1" modem in use in Panama. You might consider UGJL2 or UGKG3 also, near by. Search "soggy cashew captivate modem" and check the map. Update your own listing if you find something that works.

That is a bit out of date, you probably should flash a newer build

Thanks for the info guys, had to flash elite v. 10.1 rom, this was the only rom that would enable data service.
Tried:
AOKP-captivatemtd-build-35
F1-galaxynexus-galaxys-20120502-beta2
Nostalgia-b31-v5.4
Team ICSSGS
CM9-20120510-nightly
CNA-1.5.5
Dark Knight v5.5
Elite v.10.1 was the only rom that connected data service.
The good things is that my wife likes it as is right now, which makes it easy on me. Hehehe.
Regards.
