Hi all, so I recently sent in my I9000M Bell Vibrant to the service centre in Montreal to get it fixed (it had a fried internal SD) and they sent it back to me with a replaced motherboard (that's what I'm assuming because the phone's mac address changed and the internal SD is in working order now) but as a result the phone is no longer unlocked, which is a problem because I'm not with Bell.
They shipped the phone back to me with 2.3.3 installed, kernal version 2.6.35.7-I9000UGKG3 and I was wondering if anyone could help me root this thing so I can get it unlocked. I looked around the forum and tried SuperOneClick which didn't work and was unsure of where to go from there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
try flashing one of the kernels designed to install root e.g. Chainfire's kernel (basically stock plus root)or Hardcore's kernel (custom kernel but very robust) -- as you are on KG3 you will need a kernel designed for 2.3.3, not one for jvr or jvs.
Both CF and HC are very good at listing all their kernel variants with the right number of the firmware.
Flash using Odin with the kernel as pda, HC especially has some some clear instructions posted. It will leave you on KG3 stock rom and CSC.
You can also jump some steps, flash stock JVR as pda, leaving your KG3 modem and CSC in place, then flash a more recent JVR 2.3.4 version of either the HC or CF kernel or one like Damian's if you want to move further away from stock.
There are some further questions and answers in the thread on KG3 -- Bell users finally got a GB modem but not the latest GB firmware yet. Some have chosen to customize and go with thelatest firmware, some just wanted to root and stay on stock KG3.

I have the same question.
I have the same question. All I really want to do is root the phone and keep the stock GKG3 kernel. However, I can't find a tool that works on the Bell i9000m running this 2.3.3 version of Android.
I've tried superoneclick and the Gingerbreak tool from Chainfire but nothing works.
Is the only way to root this to update the kernel? I was looking at the CF-ROOT downloads and not sure which one I would use if I used this option.

Think it was cf-root 3.7 kernel that I flashed with Odin to get root then from there tried a bunch of roms now I'm using what's in my Sig and its wicked

I flashed stock jvp gingerbread with odin so the phone became an i9000, instead of i9000m then you can flash a rooted rom,I then used Galaxy S Unlock from the market to unlock. took a lot of figuring but it worked. good luck

hi people, this is my first post, so please be nice!
i've had the galaxy s and it's been rooted for a while, with a custom MIUI rom installed (not sure which one it is... but it's NOT the 2.3.4 one in the development section, it's version 1.7.1). i want to switch roms now, since the battery life is terrible, though the rom is great.
i've been looking through the development section for a new rom to flash, but a lot of them require some change to the firmware, bootloader, etc. the problem is, i don't know what bootloader, firmware, etc version i have
i rooted this phone when it was on STOCK 2.1 eclair ( i know, old), and i did flash a 2.2 rom before flashing this version of MIUI (2.3.4).
do roms change the bootloader? i came from an HTC device, so i don't really have an idea on whats the deal with the Galaxy S. HTC devices were a LOT easier (IMO).
i did a google search, but it didn't really help... O_O
so, if anyone can point me in the right direction, i will be VERY grateful.

'Settings -> About Phone' will show you your current firmware, etc.
Bootloaders usually only change for major revisions. If you're on Froyo (2.2) and want to flash a Gingerbread (2.3) firmware, you would need to upgrade from Froyo to Gingerbread bootloaders. If you're flashing from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, you won't need to upgrade bootloaders. Flashing is done using the program Odin or Heimdall (or using a flashable zip via recovery, such as Clockworkmod Recoevery). Heimdall has the "flash bootloaders" right there for you to tick/untick, if I recall correctly. Some firmware files (pit, tar, etc—the files you flash with Odin) have bootloaders, some do not. I can't recall if there's an option within Odin to specify whether to flash the bootloaders or not. Either way, if you flash to an AOSP Gingerbread firmware, it's likely the bootloaders will be included.
So basically, just grab Odin/Heimdall and the necessary firmware files, and you're good to go! But before you do that, verify that download mode (volume down + home + power) works. If it does not, you'll need to get it working before you start flashing—otherwise you risk bricking your device.

when i go to settings/about phone it shows this:

so how do i know what my bootloader version is?

Unfortunately, you won't be able to tell what bootloader you have. Since you're running 2.3.4, which is Gingerbread, I'd assume you have a Gingerbread bootloader—but if you flashed from Froyo to MIUI, it's likely you only have a Froyo bootloader.
If you're currently running MIUI, the best way to change to another custom ROM would be to flash (via Odin/Heimdall) to the latest AOSP Gingerbread firmware (including the bootloaders), and then flash via recovery (using a flashable zip) to the custom ROM of your choosing—unless they have a package to flash using Odin.

i was on the stock 2.1 eclair galaxy s rom, and then i downloaded and flashed the baldoz rom, which used to be 2.2 (not sure if it still is). did that custom rom change my bootloader? so if i had the stock eclair 2.1 bootloader before, wouldn't i still have that bootloader right now? since you said MIUI doesn't change the bootloader?

If you used a flashable zip to flash via CWM, your bootloaders wouldn't have been changed. If you flashed via Odin, they may have been, depending on whether or not bootloaders were included in the files. (Although, for the most part, I don't believe many custom ROMs would include bootloaders, if any at all.)
Either way, your current bootloaders shouldn't matter much. Assuming the files you use to flash (via Odin/Heimdall) include the bootloaders, but it's likely they will.
Hi guys, I'm new here and have been scouring the forums on how to do things but I keep getting caught with uncertainties.
I have an i896 Samsung Galaxy S Captivate with a Rogers 2.3.3 Gingerbread installed.
I have rooted it with no issues and its also unlocked.
What I want to do:
1. CyanogenMod 7
2. Overclock the CPU
But what I don't know is...
1. Since i'm running a Rogers ROM, do I have to flash to an AT&T ROM then to any custom ROM?
2. I read the instructions on how to update to the CM7 ROM but every instruction I read says I must have Froyo/Eclair to goto CM7. So do I downgrade and if so, how can I do that? I tried and what ends up happening is the phone's reception bars have an X and data doesn't work either. In the phone About properties, states that the baseband is "unknown". I suspect I need something more than a stock Rogers ROM without bootloaders. I couldn't find a 2.1 or 2.2 stock Rogers ROM with bootloders.
3. For overclocking, I installed Voltage Control and Control Freak and neither let me overclock, the max CPU is 1000Mhz. I assume I need a custom Kernal to do this but haven't been able to find how to do this during the CM7 upgrade.
I just need someone to point me in the right direction on what order to do all this and whether me having a Rogers stock 2.3.3 ROM causes an issue. I've done a lot of reading on these forums so its not like I just signed up and wanted to know the easy way out. I simply want the proper way to do things so I don't repeat the same mistakes many people may have done in the past.
I have used Odin, Heimdall, Odin One Click, Super One Click for rooting.
Hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction and help me achieve these goals!
You dont need to go back to Froyo, as GB bootloader is compatible. but you need CWM to flash CM7. you can use Rom Manager app to flash the CWM.
Just download CM7 zip file, wipe data, system and cache and install it using CWM. It comes with custom kernel so you can overclock it using those apps you mentioned. You can also flash Glitch kernel....
See that's what i've been trying to do but when it comes to installing the nightly rom in zip format, it tells me the signature failed.
Do I need to buy the premium version of rom manager or can I get away with the free version? I don't want to use my credit card, i rather wait until paypal is implemented with android market.
This is so frustrating...

You need to Odin flash a custom kernel that has CWM in it and then install the zip from CWM. I don't know if all kernels for the i897 are compatable with i896 just have to read. I

Ya that's what I don't know either...I read tons of threads where people with i896 Rogers roms tried to flash with AT&T based roms or i897 roms and either bricked their phones or made a mess that took much more to get them back to stock...problem is the people that have i896 roms here I can't contact until I hit 10 posts...so I'm here stuck until then...
Just flash a custom I897 kernel with cwm, once complete, yank battery, replace and button combo boot into recovery and flash the ROM. Whichever kernel you choose doesn't really matter as zip will flash a compatible kernel, the I896 and I897 are identical other than cosmetic branding.
I was on stock rogers 2.3.3.
Installed Sumari kernel. Booted into the sumari recovery, installed CM7 zip, the phone rebooted into cwm recovery, and continued installing.
It worked pretty smoothly.
okay so i flashed my phone with a stock 2.3.5 rom with CWM, but how do I update to CM7? When i boot into recovery the only option I have is reinstall package. Do i rename the CM7 zip file to update.zip and that should work? I'm so lost...
In CWM recovery you need to choose install zip from sdcard, make sure you are in fact in cwm recovery
Before you do that....you need to flash a kernel with Odin that has cwm in it...
Woo! that worked like a charm haha yea baby yea!! Thank you soo much!! i was so scared to flash my cappy going from Rogers to AT&T that it would brick the phone. Got CM7 with Glitch Kernel and overclocked to 1.4 sawweeeeet!!

CWM is flashing a .zip file on your phone in recovery, for custom rom`s/kernel`s
Odin is flashing a .tar file by unzipping a zip file twice from your computer and/or from your phone (mobile odin by chainfire), for samsung firmware
Firmware is mostly used for the firmwareversion like XXKKA or XXKL7 etc.
Update.zip is generally not used.
Never flash custom software (kernel or rom) with Odin from your computer, it initiates the binary flash counter. Will void you warranty when returning your phone to a store for repair!

Try Rocketrom v12, is to be released in about an hour or so, is very good. Been using v11 for a week now, rockstable and fast

First of all, I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct place and/or thread title for my question. I've rarely posted in this forum as I'm usually able to find what I'm looking for.
I'll try to describe the issue fully so bear with me. If you're not patient, skip the next two paragraphs and go to the problem.
I bought my Galaxy S more than two years ago; back then it had Android 2.1 and I believe I also flashed to 2.1.1 via Samsung Kies.
I later flashed Froyo via Odin, rooted with 1ClickLagFix and installed a ton of apps. I haven't updated anything for more than a year, perhaps year and a half. I recently uninstalled many applications I wasn't using, including the lag fix, unrooted and began preparing to flash something newer. I didn't have the time though, so I dropped the project, and besides, the phone is working much smoother without all the unnecessary crap I had before.
Yesterday I decided to finish the job and flash DarkyROM 11 Black Edition. I rooted the phone again using Z4root, installed CWM ROM Manager and flashed CW recovery. I need the recovery in order to flash CM9 and then the ROM per the installation instructions for DarkyROM.
At this point I might as well wait for v.12, but I'll still need the CW recovery I guess. Or I may flash v.11 as planned; I still haven't decided.
The problem: CW recovery is flashed, but when I reboot I go to 3e recovery instead (tried with the 3 buttons or boot to recovery from ROM Manager, same result). I then copied the CW recovery file directly on the SD card and renamed it update.zip (it was recovery-update.zip) and tried to apply it. Didn't work. As far as I remember it said it couldn't verify file integrity or something. I can check for sure if you'd like.
Here's what I'm running (I'll put what I see, let me know if you need more):
GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.2

clockworkmod 2.... really ? because cwm 5 or 6 is the actual version .. maybe rom manager cannot flash the recovery in froyo, try to connect phone .with kies and update to gingerbread

Can't do... Kies cannot upgrade the firmware since I'm on a custom ROM (or because it didn't match my country, I don't quite remember the reason).
I was following the installation instructions for DarkyROM for Froyo; it says I should have it rooted with CWM and use the recovery to flash CM9 and the ROM itself afterwards, so I believe Froyo isn't the issue. The kernel perhaps? Have no idea, I'm a novice more or less. I do know how to follow instructions though, so I'm not a complete idiot
Besides geting a newer ROM with newer Adnroid version I'd also like to clean up the mess I've been creating for the past year and a half. Maybe flashing a stock ROM and then DarkyROM would be easier. I'm looking for the most time-efficient method.
