Nvidia will release Tegra 2 programming documentation - LG Optimus 2x

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE5MTc
Miracles happen guess : P

Will this be enough? Or do we(or our devs) also need documentation for LG Star platform?

I'm really hopeful that this will somehow change something for the future of our phone,
but somehow I highly doubt that what they will release will really be the relevant sources for us...

Wow, this might lead to big things. If this is correct there might be a chance of... eh... hmm... No, its Nvidia! They DONT share something like that so easy. Its a trick. Next phone doesnt include a Nvidia chip... at all!
But one can only hope that im deadwrong about this. (might be one of the first time i really, really hope im wrong )
ICS 4 O2X! Make it Happen!

It means that sometime in the future there will be open source Tegra drivers by the community. Those drivers will offer hw acceleration for the UI but that's it. Without documentation of the 3d interfaces you won't be able to play games or use anything else that makes use of 3d effectively. Media decoding through the gpu will also need a new implementation by the community in order to work.

They will be probably released together with the Jelly Bean update for 2x

And seeing how long it takes for ATI/AMD open source developers to write a good driver with the documentation that was published in 2007, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. I would be actually interested to know who nVidia mainly released this for, is it for the community or for companies building products based on the Tegra.

it's not p990 related but is quite similar. obviously they have problems with wifi, bluetooth, tethering, camera, fm radio and battery drain because lack of support from manufacturer.
and there is mantra going on again:

Samsung + Nvidia = chances for AOSP are bad to none at all.

I think that Google kinda make poeple who wants pure android to buy their devices and not the others one, so they just dont help manufacters with drivers so they cant release something new. I have Jelly Bean runnig so butter in 2X and cant imagine why this people cant do a good job for who have bought it....Android is based on free system but i think there are too much darkness with this free relationship.

Pretty awesome, does this help us?

I'll post what I posted in the other thread since this may get more traffic
could some devs explain to me what type under the hood improvements ics offers over gingerbread. specifically concerning battery life, will ics roms for the vibrant have better battery life than gb roms?
CAN'T ****ING WAIT UNTIL CM9!!! I'M GETTING MOIST JUST THINKING ABOUT IT.
Awesome news! Looking forward to seeing how ICS's benefits work out on the Vibrant, especially hardware acceleration (finally).
Where are all the devs? Thought this thread would be flooded with comments, I guess the vibrant is just too old now??

Starting with IceCreamSandwich, the Android Open-Source Project can't be used from pure source code only, and requires additional hardware-related proprietary libraries to run, specifically for hardware graphics acceleration.
Official binaries for Nexus S, Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Nexus, and PandaBoard can be downloaded from Google's Nexus driver page, which add access to additional hardware capabilities with non-Open-Source code.
There are no official binaries for Nexus One, ADP2 or ADP1.

Similar in the sense that many months out with non-official 2.3 we still have buggy and feature incomplete gingerbread derivatives?
The only real upside, given that the phone stopped being supported by Samsung and T-Mobile ages ago, is that the uphill struggle with ICS will probably be no worse than it was with GB.
dont forget our non FFC phones, are gonna make face unlock obsolete... and ones with FFC probably too low resolution and speed...
But doesn't the fact that cyanogenmod officially supports the vibrant mean that when cm9 hits, that all non-nexus devices aren't too far behind? Isn't that the point of "officially" supporting a device?

Petition: We would like to be released ICS sources!

http://www.change.org/petitions/lg-...-released-ics-sources-for-our-lg-optimus-dual
Why this's Important?
There must be a strong collaboration between LG and Nvidia to create an update IceCream Sandwich.
We want Nvidia to release the source for our LG Optimus Dual, that we would release the drivers from nVidia Tegra2.
We therefore call for a strong collaboration between the two groups (LG and Nvidia) To release this in a short time, not doing as Gingerbread release after months of agony.
Complete waste of time.
Do not believe what LG says. Better wait 2 months for CM9. Atleast one of them has been keeping their promises.

Well, problem is that Nvidia is sitting on their binaries and is not going to release sources. So there is no further development of new drivers/binaries for ICS.
I have read that you can build ICS with a lot of work and the old binaries from Froyo/GB but it will not have a GPU accelerated UI.
So kicking Nvidias' and LGs' arse is neccessary for a nice CM9.

NVidia is smart. They wouldn't leave it on an internet connected computer. Only on a LAN, that is inaccessible from the internet. Only to employees with password.
JB on O2X would be awesome , but as of now , I don't think even the ICS roms are pretty stable when it comes to total stability in all fronts :/
Nova seemed to be the best of the lot , still crashes a lot when using some apps and no 3D acceleration n even unable record videos , so how good would a JB release be?
Surely would love to use it n waiting for it since I believe our device can handle it

Thank you darling, done.
I guess we won't get official JB from LG anymore, but as soon as we get ICS (which will be God knows when but I still have faith it will happen eventually) the Custom ROMs will surely be able to give us JB, since it is only incremental over ICS:
I imagine every JB ROM currently in development will have, at the very least, the same limitations as the ICS ROMs for the O2x have. Just keep in mind that no release for any other Tegra2 based device will do us any good since the platforms differ in ways that will make reverse engineering or serious hacking necessary to make it work, which is infeasible to do if you are a non-profit dev.
I agree this thread has to be moved to the Q&A section. I just wanted to give my 2 cents
But is LG not obligated to deliver JB to the LG O2X? It was released march 2011. JB was released June 2012. Didn't LG sign to the 18 months rule by Google? They also did release a white one later.

I did say I only wished for it. Never demanded or at the very least ask for it so no biggie with that. Also you can't bother any dev who decided to discontinue support for their apps so yeah pretty much either getting newer alternatives or live without those apps. Some of the noteable apps I was saying was the chainfire 3d and flash player. So good luck bothering adobe for asking to continue flash for jellybean and about chainfire? There are hundreds of android users who asked him to make chainfire 3d work for ICS and above but he said it's just too hard or worse not possible and most of all you can't say they're lazy devs.

[Discussion] Android 4.4 KitKat

While looking at this website: http://www.android.com/kitkat/index.html I found this:
Could this mean Google is tackling their fragmentation? If so, would 4.4 come out to ALL devices ? Also to 4x HD ? Would LG skip 4.2.2 / 4.3 and update to 4.4 ? love to hear your thoughts and opinions about this. Off topic posts welcome too
No no no no no no no and, finally, NO :banghead:
Em.. we're talking about LG They've abandoned our phone and they also have a bad reputation about updates. We didn't even get 4.2.2 and won't get anything new that will come out. I personally don't care.. we have GREAT devs that are keeping our phones updated to the latest versions of Android! Because of them, our phone won't die soon! It's really a shame for LG because Optimus 4X is a hell of a phone with good hardware and everything!
Android 4.4 is nothing more than a marketing operation. I do not think that this update will add a lot of new feature to our phone. I guess it is a minor update just like 4.3 or even less.
Why should we count on LG now ?
We have the official support of the CM team, PAC team, MIUI team. We have a lot if great devs who ported ALL the best ROMs for our phone.
If Android 4.4 is released we will get it with cm10.3 (maybe ?) So do not think about LG anymore since we do not need LG.
Anyway to come back to the discussion, I believe that this update won't be that important. However I'm impatiently waiting for Android 5.0 (if there is no 4.5 before...) because I think that this will be a great and important update, just like 2.3 to 4.0.x

Indeed it is relative, but I don't agree on Broadcom being the worst. The BlueDroid stack to which Google swapped BlueZ in Android 4.2 is now under the Apache license. It was a commercial project before. LG and nVidia doesn't provide anything, just what they have to (i.e. the Kernel).
