I am going to be traveling in Asia for a month. I don't need any of bells and whistles and I want a phone that is very stable, very energy efficient and GPS camera definitely has to works. Which rom/kernel will you recommend? any setting tricks? Thanks
I have tried Rod's MiuiMod, CM6.1.1, CM7 and many others.
I found that CM7 + WM 1/6/2011 kernel gives me the best battery life, but CM7 is still not in stable stage yet.
I have had the most battery life with Enomthers Rom, currently he is away on personal responsibilities but his latest stable rom is very battery efficient!
I have no recommendation as to kernel/rom combinations, but for long battery life I use this:
http://www.amazon.com/Seidio-Innocell-Battery-Google-Replacement/dp/B003FSTBP4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296521084&sr=8-2
I got really tired of barely making through a day without having to recharge so I bought one of these. I got mine for $61 on Amazon and free shipping. It's 3200mah which is over twice the stock battery. My first full charge/discharge cycle I got over 34 hours of moderate usage and it's supposed to get better after a few charge cycles. It does make your phone about 30-40% thicker (comes with it's own custom battery cover), but for the battery life you get it's well worth the added thickness. I also find it's a little easier to hold on to.
Anyway, maybe not the solution you're looking for but for me it was well worth the money.
Just my 2 cents.

That's one big battery Thanks tho, but I want my N1 to stay small.
I second the recommendation for Enomther's. Rock-stable.
I have no combo recommendation cuz I haven't found a really good one yet. Right now I'm using cm6.1 and wild monks kernel. It's been decent for me. But I suggest using set cpu, put on power save mode when you don't use the phone. It'll be there forever. Turn off data connection and gps as well. Also using less like half the animation helps speed up the phone and saves battery too.
Ps I'm combining inexus theme too and their icons plus the animations are amazing! My phone looks colorful as hell!

Lol yea it does add some bulk but it sure is reassuring to know I don't have worry about my battery dying before the day is over. I use my phone a lot and don't have time to really recharge it much and I don't like the idea of carrying extra batteries so this works very well for me.
I haven't done too many Roms, but miui has given me the most battery life out of stock, cm and miui.
I've been travelling and I managed to get 4-5 days with minimal calls and very light usage. If you use it normally with wifi and regular calls, 2-3 days is usually the limit.
Both these numbers are with auto airplane mode during my sleep hours.

What i have heard is that CM7 is 20-30% more efficient with battery life than CM6

In my personal opinion, CM7 Nightlies are really stable. After a real heavy usage i.e. playing games, surfing, calls, messages, i get about 15 hours a day.
My phone is fully charged when I leave at 8 and by 8 pm battery will be somewhere between 40 and 45 % left.
Bugs are there with CM7 Nightlies but so far I haven't had any problems with it.
Recently I've been through about 3 roms, and of the three (rod's, micromod's own GB aosp, and leo's GB aosp, leo's gives me the best battery life.
It might be because he incorporated the battery driver, though.
I now have one week to the Nexus One bought secondhand. It suits me perfectly stand alone I have a little trouble with the battery life of the phone. Morning when the phone is 100% and I come out of school (14:30 hours) the battery is still around 20%. I find this a bit short. Ok, I'll use him at school (bit Internet, twitter refreshes every 9 minutes)
There is an automatic task killer, and that helps a bit but I think there are about 80% after 8 hours battery life is a bit much. Me internet is also constantly and I really like to keep.
The battery is probably not because I've got 2 batteries and they both give the same result.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
I've been a bit inet searched but not really found anything. I did see somewhere a separate battery behind the phone, but I'm not waiting because that makes him a bit heavier and uglier.
10% per hour is pretty poor battery life. Are you running stock Android? 3rd party firmwares can give you much better battery life (the latest versions of CyanogenMod are using less than 1% per hour when fully idle).
But there are things you can check. Have you looked in Settings -> About phone -> Battery usage? If you are using Gingerbread and you look at the graph, if there is a solid line (or mostly solid) next to the "awake" portion, it means that your phone isn't properly entering its low powered state. Download spare parts from the market and check out partial wake usage under the battery history section of that app.
Please post your screen on time value from the battery menu so we can see how long your screen is on.
I would say to go and disable background data. Disabling this will definitely improve your battery life. Of course, you aren't going to get you twitter updates but aside from that, the battery life should improve.

While it is true that battery life would improve if Background Data was disabled (or limited via a program like Juice Defender), it doesn't take into account his actual problem. Unless it is a ton of apps constantly downloading that is keeping his battery usage in the toilet, this will only yield a slight improvement. I believe the cause is is an app (or apps) that prevent his phone from entering the low powered sleep state.
I don't know what stock Android gets from completely idle use (haven't run it since July last year), but a basic CyanogenMod install would sip between 1-2% per hour with the latest stable and the latest nightlies, some are reporting 1% every 2-3 hours when the phone is left alone (due to a fix that lets the microphones go into a deep sleep state).
Twitter refreshing every 9 minutes can not be helping, that said I doubt that's your entire issue but reducing the refresh rate should help quite a bit.
If you bought it used, it could be a bum battery. Not sure i know what apps work best to find out that info. Anybody?

The battery app in my sig is the only one that reads the chip inside your battery to tell if it's legit or not, what the battery age is, etc. Needs root to work though.

So I used to think CM6 had the best battery life so I flashed 6.1.0 but not much battery life change so im starting to think that maybe it was actually cm 6.0.0 that had best battery life but im unable to find it so I can test it. So im here asking you all what Rom has brought you the best battery life to your cdma hero no matter if its 2.2 or 2.3

I would like to know what's your measure of "best" battery life?
try using aosp - jaybob's rom, best rom with battery life, used it pretty heavily and got 15 hours

My measure of best battery life is not losing 10% of my batery life doing nothing. I remember when my battery would be be at 40% I go to sleep wake up and its about 30%, now its dead by the time I wake up

don't need to flash the kernel since it's already in the rom. Just do a full wipe and bam ! I'm actually trying the latest one (june-08) but the june 4 version gave me that 15 hour
personally i have found that the rom you choose itself doesnt really matter, its more about your personal usage, i.e what apps u have running, cpu settings, etc. i usually get around 15-20 hours battery life with pretty heavy mp3 use, lots of texting, and about two hours or so actually on the phone. but i make sure i leave data/wifi/gps etc. off unless i need it. also, its a good idea to check and stop apps that automatically load with the phone that you dont need. imho the only roms that seem to drain the battery quicker are the sense based ones, at least from my own experience.

I was thinking about starting a new thread about this, but you are explaining EXACTLY what I am going through. I wake up today (after leaving my phone charging at night) and turn on my phone, and first thing I see is an 80% battery (this is a normal occurance). After literally doing NOTHING on it all day (except for a 30 minute call) it turns off by itself at 20%.... after 8 hours. So while I got 2 hours better than you, keep in mind that I did virtually nothing. What is worse about it is i'm supposedly using the "best rom" for battery life (AOSP 2.2. + battery tweak).
I've wiped battery stats (after reading the correct way to do it) and checked the health of my batter (reads as "good") and i'm still clueless. I'm wondering if I should even waste my money on a battery and hope that's it? I've only had the phone exactly a year and about a week so I'de be disappointed to know the battery lasts this short. I remember being on another froyo ROM (with the battery tweak) using it more than I am now going to bed anywhere between 30 and 50% which is about where it's at at lunch time now! I can't believe that i'm actually ok with the performance of my hero, it's just the battery that's killing me now !
And I plan on staying away from the GB ROMS until they get the GPS issue resolved. Let's just say that I was in Colorado a couple of weeks ago and my phone failed when I need it to work.... flashed froyo almost immediately when I got back (that's another topic)

it really depends on where you are, what socket do you have, etc. But what i know excactly - non sense roms are much better about battery than sense one's. i've used miui, now using jelly bean - it's really better

Lying to this people is not nice, there's no way you can make it lasts for 3 days even if you don't use it at all, no matter which rom you are using. Not to mention 5 days.

Okay, maybe not really 3 days or 5 days full but almost near that. For ICS I could get 2 days + 12 more hours then it goes to zero. For Trinity XL GB rom, I could get 5 days (well 4 days + 8 hours) because of the deep sleep mode.

Read your posts, 3-5 days with normal usage (wifi+music player) and that's not deep sleep, but even if you leave it in deep sleep no way to pump it up to 5 days or 4d+8h.
Or maybe I'm wrong, but I've never seen a smartphone with battery life like yours. Maybe you should go to HTC and offer your services, cause you'll make them a top smartphone seller as the first smartphones manufacturer that makes them with 5-days battery.
god I'm lucky to get 15 hours with normal usage on ICS\JB.
The best ROM I've found for battery life was CM7. When I go on holiday I always roll back to it
I managed to get a whole week on Android Revolution. I cleaned up almost all default applications, set low screen brightness, used Nova as a launcher, turned off the glamorous animation effects and blocked all data transfer (except for an hour per day, when I turned WiFi on, checked my mailbox and read news feeds). This profile is not really convenient for everyday usage, but it is suitable when you travel.
After try so many roms, I think there are 2 roms -- stock and arhd4.
I am using arhd because battery usage is almost the same as stock rom but it is a bit faster (not oc). My normally usage, this 2.5 years old machine can take up to 36-40 hours.
From my captured battery usage picture.
Screen on: 2 hrs
Auto brightness
Wifi always on
3g: 4 hrs
Voice call: 30 mins

I get a decent days worth from Sabsa, I don't expect it to go on much longer than a day and I charge it every night, but I can leave data on to auto sync, and make/take a couple of calls etc and I get by OK.
I've been running it for a long time now, it's settled down and is functional.

Imo it's just placebo effect. I actually think that they waste battery than save.
About battery saving apps:
Some might help save some of your battery, like Juice Defender, but about 100% of the stuff that an app does is something you can do for yourself.
Like dim the screen when you don't need 100% brightness, turn off data and use only GSM when you don't need to use data (and if 3G has better reception it might be worth staying on 3G though, at least in my world a better reception would mean a little bit better battery than if you changed to the network mode with worse reception) and when you don't need WiFi - you turn it off.
Using apps to kill other services and apps are not a good idea either, since some apps will only restart and restart and restart while the task killer will keep killing = both apps will drain your battery.
And by turning off both WiFi and data and the apps are well designed, they should not try to look for updates and such if there are no available internet connections.
And, by undervolting you gain more than using different apps and such and if you then learn how to set up your device in the best way for battery you will get longer battery life.
If I don't use my phone so often, I can get about 2 days with 3G/GSM + WiFi turned on all the time and mobile data connection turned on all the time. If I use it a lot I still get long enough battery time to make a full day, usually I need to charge my phone every 18-24 hours when I use it to check mail, send some texts and read news (and XDA, as the addicted person I am).
Now, I just hope that I haven't f*cked anything up - I'm just too lazy to read it through.

I bought myself a Nexus 7 about a month ago to satisfy the cravings for that Jellybean goodness. After trying several ICS/JB roms on my IncS over the past year, I decided to revert back to the CM7 Nightlies. Much to my surprise it's almost as if I forgot how blazingly fast Gingerbread was.
Given how i use my IncS on a daily basis, I seem to be averaging around 34-36 hours before it hits below 5%. It really only gets used for calls, texts and wifi tethering to my N7.

I used to average 30% battery drain per day with light use with stock GB rom and kernal, it has upped to approx 50% per day with stock ICS rom, with lOst profit's overclock kernal running at 1400 wake and 368 sleep. ( setcpu )
Not bad considering 40% increase in processor speed, but less than 20% increase in battery usage.

keep in mind you have to give it a couple of hours , maybe even a day(depending on how much it has to do and your connection etc) Before the rom settles down after flashing. Then you can give your impression of it if it is laggy or not.
