[Q] Which micro SD card to buy for Samsung Captivate? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a two year old AT&T Samsung Capivate that is completely stock and running Android 2.2. I want to try to flash CM10 on it. This is going to be my first time ever trying to root/flash my phone. It doesn't have a micro SD card in it and I believe I will require one if I go down the rooting/flashing route.
Question: Which is a good micro SD card to buy? Does the class 2, 4, 6 etc matter?E

You don't need an external sd to flash/root your phone. You just need enough room on your internal sd to dl the ROM you want.
If you want an external, i would recommend class 10. Storage capacity is up to you, but the Captivate is rated at 16GB, although I've heard several reports of people using 32GB cars with no issue.

*Good* Class 6 MicroSD cards

Hey guys,
I've been having a great deal of trouble with my cheap Transcend 8gb class 6 card . . . spontaneous unmounts, lots of finicky behavior all around. Having the apps on the SD means the phone crashes, and the app permissions get borked to hell.
I've heard these are not very good cards (you get what you pay for in this case) and are known to have problems with the G1 . . . or the G1 is known to have problems with them. Either way, perhaps some of you can help me:
-Are the Transcends indeed "problem cards?"
-Has anyone had one, gotten fed up with the crashing, replaced it, and is in good working order?
-If that's the case, what are some known good cards I can get to replace it?
Thanks!
they are not problematic, they are just not compatible enough! Every device has issues with every other sd card no matter what. I been buying sd cards and I have had problems with these since the day they were born.
In my opinion, transcend are one of the more compatible sd cards. Funny thing is I use a sandisk on my phone and I always had issues with sandisks before on other devices.
First things first, Transcend are by no means a 'cheap brand'. They actually make some of the more expensive memory cards you can buy, and they are very good. My memory card is a Transcend, an 8GB Class 6 like yours.
The difference is that my one has never failed me. It's actually very fast. Furthermore, Transcend are known for making good memory cards. Maybe you just got unlucky with your one.
I ordered the A-Data class 6 to replace my class 4 sandisk based off raving reviews. I havent read much for negative reviews on the A-Data lineup, even though they are a smaller company
I had a transcend 8gb class 6 card that failed completely (can't even access from a PC). When it failed, and due to my apps to sc and other changes, my phone wouldn't boot without a card. I had to install the 128 mb card once I got home and re-update from scratch. When the transcend card worked, it was fast. I've used other cards of theirs in my cameras for a while now, and they've been very good. But this failure caused a bit of a headache for me. I'm at the point where if I see any problems with my sd card, I'll simply replace it to avoid worse problems. Wouldn't have helped in this case as I saw no signs before hand. If it means much, I'd try another transcend card again.
Sorry, didn't mean to bash Transcend undeservedly. So maybe it's just an issue particular to their cards and the G1?
Thread moved to Dream Q&A, please post in the correct place; not dev related.
i went through 2 4gb class 6 adata cards that wouldn't work at all after i partitioned them. phone would bootloop regardless of rom. it worked great if i left all fat32....very strange.
orange that should be a good card. if you have any way to put it into your computer and try to format it, via a usb conector ect. then give that a go. other wise it could be the rom your on, what type of rom are you using or is it stock?
Don't base your purchase decision on the Class classification. Sandisk's Class 2 cards have known to have stellar performances under ATTO.

Cyanogen Mod. Latest (4.2.12.2) but I've had this problem in previous versions. A friend's G1 has experienced similar problems with the same Transcend 8gb card, and I vaguely recall hearing warnings against using that brand w/ the G1, but perhaps I'm mistaken.
For now, I've deleted the EXT and swap partitions from the card and did a wipe so that all apps are running from internal memory. I haven't noticed any unmounts today, but last night the phone was unusable and this same sort of thing has happened before with the same card in both my original G1, and the warranty replacement (the warranty replacement was for an unrelated issue).

[Q] 32GB SD Card not working

I got a 32GB micro SD card for use with my Nexus One. However, it doesn't seem to work.
For starters, I'm using CM 6.1.0-RC1 and whenever I put the SD card in my phone, it recognises it but says it is not formatted. Upon formatting, it then tells me the SD card is corrupt.
I've tried formatting it through a card reader, directly from my laptop and via the Nexus One, but the result is the same.
Am I missing something or is the memory card a dud?
Well, how much did you pay for the card? Currently 32GB micro SD cards are only sold by either Sandisk or Kingston I believe, and it should not cost less than $80 (Sandisk, which I happily bought upon knowing the price).
No issues for me in the Nexus One, formatted on a PC using 8k cluster sizes.
I ordered a new SD card from Amazon - I should have it in a week or so. I'm hoping it'll work

Do you have issues with your rom running slow?

[Q] Upgrading to a newer SD card?

Hi,
In a week or two, I would like to upgrade my SD card. 2GB card that came with the phone is way too small to hold a larger amount of media, namely MP3s, videos, pictures, backups, and the like.
What I was thinking was to buy a card with at least 8GB of storage, and the highest class possible for the X8 to handle. Several questions arise from this.
Are there any compatibility issues regarding the class, size and type of SD card with our phone? Can I just buy a 32GB class 10 card and be happy with it, or is it better to buy a card with more conservative characteristics?
There is this Kingston card here on the market that's quite cheap, yet it claims to be class 10. What are your experiences with Kingston cards and are they any good?
Lastly, can someone point me to the best and safest way to move all data to a new card from the current one, while preserving all references and data in the process? Keep in mind I have a number of apps on my SD card.
First nackup all your apps via titanium backup.
Now copy the old sd cards content into the newer one.
Now restore the apps via titanium backup...

1.THERE'S NO LIMITS FOR SDCARD CLASS.
HIGHER SD CLASS MEANS HIGHER WRITE/READ SPEED. NO OTHER DIFFERENCE!
2. A 32GB MEMORY CARD ON OUR PHONE IS POSSIBLE ****BUT****
U CAN'T RUN MEMORY CARD IF U PUT MORE THAN 16 GIGABYTES DATA(MUSIC,APP,...) PHONE SAYS DAMAGED SDCARD, FORMAT !
BUY 32 GB AT UR OWN RISK!
*KINGSTON IS NOT PERFECT ,IT'S JUST GOOD, ALL SDCARDS MANUFACTURED IN CHINA HAVE THE SAME PERFORMANCE.(in my opinion Kingston is the best in Chinese market)
3.move via pc with data cable (or a card reader ,not recommended. )
Format new card with phone.
#my sd: PNY ©10 -16GB
read speed :max 36mbs
Write speed: max 8mbs
Owned about 3 months+using 200mb swap partition -no problems at all
Sorry for my terrible English!

Thanks for the tip. I ran the batch for "Backup all user apps". Suppose "Restore all apps with data" is the last step?
EDIT: Also, there's really a lot of junk on the card, now that I think of it. Is it just possible to move the Titanium backup onto the newer card, along with some other things (pictures, ROM backups, etc.), perform the restore, and forget about the rest? Will there be any side-effects?
No there wont be any side effect.
Android creasts the necessary folders itself..

[Q] Memory Card compatible for HD7?

hi guys, my hd7 currently only have 8gb inside. planning to upgrade to 16 or 32gb. but i notice that our hd7 only compatible card. i've done my research on hd7 forum, this is what i came up with. need some one to verify it.
my question is:
1. basically what class do i need to look for? it is either class 4 or 2?
2. notice that stock memory card named "Sandisk MicroSDHC". Does it need to be HC? at my local higher capacity card seem to be running out. only 4gb are available.
3. and can i use another brand. i know some already used other brand. but do kingston work?
if u have upgraded ur hd7 memory. do also let me know the brand, capacity and class speed.
i think it might be good for our forum to compile all compatible microsd into a thread.

Almost all newly manufactured SDHC cards will now work with the HD7.
I would recommend a higher quality brand like , SanDisk, PNY or Kingston... These are less likely to have poor Read/Write speeds and you shouldn't have any problems with it being a faulty SD card in the device.
Use a class 4, 6 or 10 SD card. The Read/Write speeds on the higher class cards are generally faster. Which equals faster loading, transition and less lag on the device.
The HC stands for "High Capacity" and yes I would stay with the SDHC card and they make 8, 16 and 32gb cards that will work with the HD7.
If your devices bootloader version is 5.12 then it will support the 64gb class 10 micro SDXC cards.
I'm using a 32gb class 4 micro SDHC card in my HD7 with a bootloader version of 3.xxx and it has worked perfectly in 2 different HD7's now.
thanks for the confirmation! sandisk usually run out pretty fast. but there alot of kingston at my local store. i know a place sell class 6 16gb and class 10 32gb microsdhc. so i'll give em a try. as for my bootloader version, yes it at 5.12. but planning to downgrade it using the y-cable method after the memory upgrade. so l'll stick with microsdhc.
how long does the initial start up take? after the restore process completed.. cus i had install mine, sandisk 16gb class 4, and currently its still on the htc logo waiting to start up. on the bootloader, the mmc info has been updated. or the card is bad?
Edit:
Seem the card is not compatible to my hd7. if i remove the card, it will switch on after restore process complete.

After you insert the new SD card, make sure you perform a hard reset to integrate the SD card into the system first.
ok i got my hd7 up n running for weeks now. I used 16gb class 4 sandisk.
a buddy of mine also using hd7 8gb. So he ask me to do the same thing to his hd7. Weirdly his phone wont boot up with the same memory card i bought. Does mango update make a difference?
